MIDI Instrument Management

We have a lot of MIDI instruments in our environment that correspond to channels on our 8 PCs running Gigastudio, V-Stack, Kontakt, etc.
Right now, we have one environment layer for Strings, one for Brass, etc.
First Question: When selecting an instrument from the Arrange window for a particular track, one is presented with submenus representing the environment layers, and then a list of instruments within that layer.
Is there a way to create submenus within a layer? For instance: there would be two submenus representing Legato and Pizz. instruments within the Strings environment layer submenu.
Second Question: Is there any way to sort MIDI instruments in and environment window? This is kinda driving me nuts.
Thank you!!!

I see what you mean. That's a good tip, but unless
I'm misunderstanding you, you're talking about the
automatic alphabetical sorting in the menus in the
Arrange window.
My reply was in response to your question, "i just want to sort alphabetically (or by MIDI port/channel). "
So I thought you wanted to have port 1 be first in the list, port 2 second in the list, and so on.
What I wish was someway to arrange or sort
instruments in the Environment window, but it seems
that they are forced to sort by creation order.
This issue came up because my boss is inclined to
look for an instrument in the environment according
to where it is in the Arrange menus, i.e.,
alphabetically.
I'm going to play with this and get back to you. I think there's a way to do this. Maybe, possibly, I think...  :-)
But I'm thinking now maybe the solution is to do that
trick where you double click on an arrange track
while an environment window is open, and it
automatically selects the envrionment object.
Although, this functionality doesn't seem to always
work properly.
That's right, it's a little inconsistent. Might be a bug. The trick to overcoming it is to click on an instrument (in the arrange window) that you know lives in an unrelated layer, and then click on the instrument you want to see.

How do I change the volume for a single midi instrument in GarageBand 10? Every time I move the volume, it moves back!

Every time I move the volume, it moves back!
Check, if you have a volume automation set on the software instrument track.
If the track volume automation curve is enabled, the volume slider for the track will move with the automation curve.
Click the automation curves disclosure triangle in the track header and disable the volume automation.

  • Can you assign MIDI instrument parameters as MIDI CC assignments (quantize, transposition, etc)?

    Hello!
Is it possible to assign MIDI controller CC assignments in a way that will allow me to control the following Logic MIDI instrument parameters via knobs on my MIDI controller?
I would love to have control over the following parameters with whatever track or MIDI region is selected:
    Quantize
    Transposition
    Velocity
    Delay
My Akai LPD8 is begging me to be able to assign these parameters as CC events with the Akai LPD8 controller editor software.
It might seem silly, but being able to twist a knob to control toggling between these drop-down parameters would make for some intuitive, hands-on creative control while in performance/creation mode, or really as a means to audition different ideas. Why should these tools be only for tedious editing?
I understand that I wouldn't be able to record these event changes as MIDI automation data, but they would be great to get a feel of what I am looking for during creative sessions.
Anyone know if this is possible? I didn't see that it was obvious to do so, though I am just getting into mapping my custom controls with Logic.
    Thanks so much!

    Thanks for the reply....
I actually tried freezing the software instrument track and that had little if no effect on CPU. I then read in the book or somewhere that the freeze function really only works on effect plugins. Don't know if that's true in all cases, but that seems to be what's happening.  Still would like to combine these tracks and I'm guessing I'm going to have to get creative with bussing or subgroups to make this happen. Unfortunately I think the fact that my Presonus board has hardmapped output routings for all the inputs makes that difficult, but haven't actually tried yet. I'm thinking if I can reroute the midi modules audio output input into the Presonus to a subgroup and then route the software instrument plug in to the same subgroup that I can then mix/capture this and hopefully route the audio's input to the subgroup to pick up the mix.
Does this make sense to anybody reading this?
We'll see and I'll post the results if it works....
    thanks...b

  • Can you play two different MIDI instruments at the same time in Garageband?

    Hi all,
I searched for a while but failed to find an answer so far: can Garageband allow you to play two tracks with two different midi instruments? When I plug my two keyboards, the 2 MIDI sources are recognized, but can only play notes on one track, not two different tracks! Is this a known limitation?
If Garageband can't play 2 midi instruments on 2 different tracks, I guess that leaves me with Logic Express...
Thanks a lot for any reply!
    Alex

Correct. GB doesn't differentiate between midi channels, that's why you can't split them to two tracks (and GB only offers one recording channel for midi at a time).

Port Forwarding.....or Port Mapping....as Apple calls it is a difficult and complex configuration method for most users. Because there are so many variables involved in this type of setup, it is not possible to provide a step by step guide that will work for everyone with all devices.
It is possible that a setup guide exists for the the WD drive and AirPort Extreme, but you will have to go looking for it on the Internet. Even if you find one, it may not be tailored to your specific situation or needs.
Sometimes, you can do everything right....at least according to someone's article or "how to" guide, and things still will not work correctly.
In situations like this, when you really don't know what to do, you need to enlist the aid of an IT pro, who will know what to do based on your particular products and unique circumstances. Sometimes....they won't be able to get things working either due to particular circumstances.
But, before you do this, I would strongly recommend that you use a Static IP address for your Internet connection with your ISP. If you do not have this now, contact them to ask them if they offer this type of connection. Expect to pay more for this type of service, of course.

  • Why do my midi instruments stop working after 1-2 minutes?

So I've been toying around with Garageband 11 on my MBP base 13 with upgraded memory. I am able to get a couple of midi instruments to connect and to sound and record through the program, however, I'm running into an issue with two controllers in particular. I'm using an older emedia midi controller with no available drivers online (that I've seen as of yet) and a set of PS3 usb Band Hero drums. As I stated I can get them both connected and they sound great with little to no latency. What's strang is that after two minutes of use, playing through with controller, the sound cuts out. It still registers there is a device connected, but with both things you can no longer hear the instrument or record anything. I'm stumped. I ran this referall to set up the drums and it looks as if I'm not the only one struggling, but I've yet to receive any feedback! http://themartiansarecoming.wordpress.com/2011/04/14/turning-ps3-guitar-hero-wor ld-tour-drum-kit-ghwt-into-midi-input-device-for-garageband-11/
Anywho I thought some folks on here might have been through this or just have a wide enough understanding of the whole system as to what might be causing this issue. My hopes are it's a plugin issue or something simple I can download, but theres a chance it's just compatibility. The usb mic that I have from the band hero kit works great and I've yet to have it stop working, but this is running through a different setup switching from built in mic to the usb. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated so don't hold back!
    Thank you

Yes I did that but nothing happened.  I removed about 6 apps that use sounds or creates ringtones to no avail.  The only thing that helps, and this temporary, is hitting the mute button and off and all the sounds for all phone basics-texts, ringers, alerts ce back up.  No program seems to shut it down, just time and within 3 days it reverts back to no sounds for ringers, texts, etc.  I don't see any problems with speaking sounds and game sounds, yet.  I have a lifetime with pc's since 1978 with my radio shack trs80 and this one befuddles me.  Something is telling me there is a problem with the operating system on iOS 6 because my hours of research has proven to assure me apple phones are losing their basic sound DLL's in some template, being c++ based largely, somebody I think has a pointer getting 'stuck' and when a hard reboot can't clear the issue, my experience tells me somebody let a template get out of hand and is a serious problem.  I found hundreds of similar sound problems with myriads of solutions such as resynching with iTunes, updating iOS if it hadn't been already, turning a list off toggles on and off then rebooting.  For me the mute/unmute has worked temporarily and sometimes it won't even work sometimes and I have to have the phone on vibrate and keep it on my person so as to feel the ring/alerts.  Being a long time proficient programmer/basic networker/basic hardware user, I don't like duct tape solutions such as toggle a switch like Fonzi smacking the jukebox to get the music to play.  I always wondered why Arnold(Asian or chubby Caucasian) never got his jukebox fixed.  So anybody know a non-duct tape solution or seen am apple thread describing a permanent solution please let me know?!? Thanks, Jon

  • I can see midi instruments in playback but can't hear them. How?

I have a Macbook Pro and I'm using Logic express for the first time.
I am recording guitar tracks and playing them back using an M-Audio firewire 410.
However when I try to do anything with a midi instrument I can't hear it at all. I'm seeing the notes that i hit on the keyboard appear in the track and I can see the light bumping up and down in time to the notes.
Yet at no point will ANY of the audio emerge for the midi instruments.
This all works fine with Garage band and Reason and the LE 7.2.3 download has been installed.
Any idea where I'm going wrong.

I am having the same problem or a similar problem. I'm running Logic Express 7.2.3. on an 800MHz PowerPC G4, using Mac OS X version 10.4.9. I've gone into Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio and the Core Audio Tab is checked "Enabled." I've entered notes as midi data on track 18 (Polysynth) and can see them on the score screen, and when I press "play" the verticle line moves across the notes but I hear nothing through the speakers attached to the computer. I've also tried the Caps Lock Keyboard and never get any sound through the speakers no matter which Audio Instrument I select. The only sound I've ever obtained from the program has been the clicks when the record button is pressed. I have been searching the manuel and Orren Morton's LOGIC PRO 7 POWER! but have found nothing that works. Any assistance that anyone can give will be appreciated.

  • Volume Problem when using external midi instruments

Hi everyone, I'm having a problem recording the audio from my external midi instruments into Logic 8.
I have all my external midi instruments set up in my environment and they are all going through a motu micro lite interface, with the audio going through a focusrite saffire pro 40.
The way I record Midi into Logic is to load up a new software instrument-select external instrument-find the relevant synth & input-record the midi that I want & adjust as needed-bounce down to an audio channel.
The problem Im having at the moment and have had for a little while is that when I record this way, the audio that accompanies the midi, although I can hear it loudly through my monitors, the input levels in Logic are really small and when I come to bouncing down and listen back to it, it is a lot quieter than I'd originally heard.
With the Pro 40 comes the Mix Control surface, upon checking this the volume on the master output channels is much more representative of the volume I'm hearing through my monitors, and it isn't the same within Logic. I've checked that I haven't got an output coming through channels on this at the same time as its coming through Logic which would result in the sound being doubled and obviously louder, this definitely doesn't appear to be the case.
Its really puzzling and quite annoying me, If anyone could shed any light on why this may be happening that would be fantastic, I've used this forum a few times and I've always found people to be very kind & helpful.

It was the first thing I was thinking about. Stop the "Software Monitoring" in the Logic Prefs and try again if you do not have any duplicated hardware routings.

  • Unable to play External Midi Instruments in Logic Express

    Hi,
I have a Yamaha Keyboard which is connected to my Mac via a usb midi cable (Edirol). I have installed the driver for the midi cable and have set it up properly in the "Audio Midi Setup".
However when I am using Logic Express, I just do not know where I can select the midi cable(Edirol) for my Midi In / Out put and as such, I am unable to play any sounds from my keyboard in Logic Express.
Is someone can advise me on this, would be most grateful.
    Thanks in advance and cheers.

    Hi
Thanks so much for your reply. I have done so for the setup, however when I am in Logic Express I am still unable to play sounds from my keyboard. The mac seems to be using sounds from the computer instead and I do not know where in Logic Express can i go to set it such that my keyboard sounds are used in stead, as i wish to assign channels to my various midi instruments so that they play the right sound from my keyboard.
    Please help!! Thanks

  • How do I keep my Patch names for my external Midi instruments when starting

Whenever I start a new project all the names in the different banks are just numbers.
I use a JV-2080 with expansion cards which represent close to 2000 patch names in 11 banks.
(I have some other Midi instruments too with their banks)
I have a "basic setup" project where all the patches for all the instruments are loaded, and until I know a better way, I always start with that "basic setup" and then modify it and "save as" a new project.
Is that the only way? or is there a way to automatically load all the patch names in the Multi Instrument window?
I find it very annoying that I cannot start a project from scratch, without having to copy and paste hundreds of patch names.
I read somewhere in the manual that "initializing" the banks in the Multi Instrument Window, occupies extra memory. I find this comment very strange because the text file containing all my patch names is only 24kB just a drop in the bucket.
    Or am i missing something?

The whole point of autoload temapltes is you setup a Logic song to contain all the stuff you need, environment configuration, patch names, track assignments and so on, so whenever you load Logic or start a new song, all your stuff is instantly there.
Think of it like a real studio - when you start a new song, you don't unpack all your gear from boxes, put them on shelves, and wire them up etc before you start - that stuff is all done once beforehand. You just turn them on, and go.
Same with Logic - it loads your startup template with all your stuff in it, so you can immediately just start doing music, with no futzing necessary.

  • Multi MIDI Instrument Problem

    Hi All,
I'm trying to configure my MonoMachine as a (multi) MIDI instrument in Logic. Most of it is working but I am having a real problem with separating the channels. It can receive MIDI to it's internal synths from Logic for a variety of applications on channels 1-9. However, it can also use it's internal MIDI sequencer to send out MIDI to trigger soft synths, other MIDI gear, etc, on channels 10-15. I have configured a multi instrument in the environment (set to all channels), then activated channels 10-15 only, then created 6 audio instruments and connected the multi to each, ensuring that each audio instrument is allocated to different channels (10-15).
The problem is that Logic is sending all 6 Monomachine MIDI channels to all soft synths attached to the multi instrument and not sending channel 10 to instrument 1, channel 11 to instrument 2, etc. It works perfectly well in Live 6 but then I didn't have to configure any environments to get it to work!!!!
I have also tried a channel splitter between the multi and the instrument channels but with no success.
Any ideas? I've also posted this over at the Elektron forums but thought I'd ask here too.
    Thanks
    David

    Hi,
Thanks for that. Just got round to reconfiguring and it still doesn't work. Although the input from Logic to the MonoMachine is triggering channels 1-9 perfectly, the channels out of the Monomachine into Logic (10-15) are still triggering every audio instrument plugin on every channel.
    Any other ideas?
    Many thanks.

  • Route midi instrument to a track insert

    Hey guys,
I just purchased native instruments the finger and it sounds really fun.
I have a synth instrument and i put the finger as an insert on that track.
I then create a midi track but I dont see how its possible in the known universe of the logic interface to link that midi instrument to a track insert...
The thing about the finger is that its ran by keys and knobs so simply automating params will not work.
    Any help would be good.
    Thanks

I figured out ONE way to do it... dont know if it is the best.
Send the synth track to bus1 @ full send volume.
    Set to no output
Add a software instrument track with reaktor as the input
