Migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new san hardware

We are getting ready to migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on an iscsi san to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on a new iscsi san.
I've been searching for a "best practices" article for this but have been coming up short.  The information I have found either pertains to migrating from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 with failover cluster volumes on the same hardware, or migrating
to different hardware without failover cluster volumes.
If there is anyone out there that has completed a similar migration, it would be great to hear any feedback you may have on your experiences.
Currently, my approach is as follows:
1. Configure new hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new SAN with new 2012 r2 hostnodes and 2012 r2 management server
2. Turn off the virtual machines on old 2008 r2 hyper-v hostnodes
3. Stop the VMMS service on the 2008 r2 hostnodes
4. copy the virtual machine files and folders over to the new failover cluster volumes
5. Import vm's into server 2012 r2 hyper-v.
Any feedback on the opertain I have in mind would be helpful.
Thank you,
Rob

Hi Rob,
Yes , I agree with that "file copy " can achieve migration.
Also you can try "copy cluster wizard " :

  • FSMO Migration from 2003 to 2008 R2

    I am prepping for FSMO migration from 2003 to 2008 R2 this weekend. I was going through the steps and found a issue that is concerning me. On the 2008 server which is a DC and going to hold all FSMO roles. When I right click on Schema to change Schema
    Master the "Change field" does not reflect the new 2008 R2 server? Is this by design...As in will this reflect the 2008 R2 server once I do step 1 Change Domain Controller? Single domain simple AD topology. I am an enterprise admin, domain
    admin, and schema admin.  The current FSMO is 2003 R2 and it follows to current 2003 R2 and 2008 R2. Will I have to seize the role?
    All other FSMO moves show the new server ma-file1. Any help appreciated.
    Dave Santel

    All AD commands show that I have healthy replication, DNS, ect. No errors. Issue as stated above is when I goto "Change Schema Master" on ma-file1 it only gives the option to change to 2003 existing FSMO ma-file. Not sure if I should proceed with
    FSMO migratio using NTDSUTIL to manually transfer? Or if anyone has any advice on how to proceed?
    C:\>netdom query fsmo

    RID pool manager            ma-file.ccc.local

    The command completed successfully.

  • CA migration from 2003 to 2008 R2 server.

    Hi,
    If the name of the destination server (Win2008) is different from the source server(Win2003). And later we decide to decommission the server(Win2003). What effect will be on the Certificate that are already issued from the source server(Win2003).
    1. Can we renew those certificates from the Windows 2008 server ?Since we have restored the CA database and private key on the Windows 2008 server.
    2. What could be the impact if we shutdown the Windows2003 after migration. Please note CA server of windows 2008 have a different hostname now.
    3. What are the impact to the existing servers where the cert is pointing to the Windows 2003 CA server.
    I followed this article to do the CA migration

    Thanks....

    Can we have two CA running in an environment ?
    In the below TechNet docs , it has mentioned to Removing the CA role service from the source server and
    Removing the source server from the domain . Can we skip these steps ?
    The point it to decommission or removed source CA only when the new CA server with different name is active and successfully operational.

  • Roaming profiles migration from 2003 to 2008

    Hi everyone,
    I need to know if there is a tool from Microsoft or a procedure for TS profile migration settings from 2003 to 2008 R2 like network links, connected printers ...
    for data migration I see that I can use this link http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/947025/en-us?wa=wsignin1.0
    I heard about some tools like Profile Migrator or Forensit,
    but I want to do it cleanly with Microsoft recommandation
    Any help will be very appreciated,
    Thanks

    Hi Sam,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Yes, agree with link provided by Milos. As it’s incompatible but we can use USMT tools and need to migrate the user profile based on the following situations.
    Roaming Profile: The following KB article is helpful in this scenario:
    Support guidelines for migrating roaming user profiles data to Windows Vista or to Windows Server 2008
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;947025
    Local Profile: There is no out-of-box way to support the automatic migration based on my experience. You may need to manually migrate the data into the new profile locations.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Migrate from Existing SQL 2008 R2 Failover Cluster (Rackspace) to new offsite SQL 2008 R2 Cluster (our own cloud)

    I have an existing cluster sitting in Rackspace. We have a new co-location with its own SAN that we want to migrate everything over to. Now, if we were keeping the SAN active in Rackspace, this wouldn't be an issue and I'd just add two new nodes to the cluster
    and take down the two old nodes, but I need the data shipped to the new SAN so everything in Rackspace can be turned off. VPN is configured between sites (500mbps pipe), so bandwidth isn't a problem.
    Should I be adding new shared storage to the existing cluster, replicate to that, turn off the old shared storage, then add new nodes and eventually disable old nodes? I'm trying to do this with the least downtime.
    The picture can best be described as this (very simplified)
    RACKSPACE CLUSTER - on its own SAN
    Node 1: SQLSERVER1-RACK
    Node 2: SQLSERVER2-RACK
    SQL Server Name: SQLSERVER
    NEW CLUSTER - on its own SAN
    Node 1: SQLSERVER1-NEW
    Node 2: SQLSERVER2-NEW

    while this might be doable using SQL Server replication, log shipping is best on a continual basis, or use a backup restore for a one time copy.

  • HT4889 Am I wrong or does Migration Assistant not work in Mountain Lion (10.8.2) when migrating from a PowerPC running Tiger (10.4.11)? Apple really needs to get on the ball or face losing people buying their new desktop products.

    The title alone speaks to my frustration about this issue.
    Used the process that was recommended by Apple to migrate from my "Lampshade" iMac (PPC running 10.4.11) to the new iMac (Intel running 10.8.2) and I got bupkiss...
    Just a spinning wheel (not beachball) and no drive recognized using Migration Assistant for both nor when using Target Mode on the iMac running 10.4.11 and Migration Assistant on the iMac running 10.8.2. Which is ironic, or more accurately oxymoronic, since the iMac in Target Mode (10.4.11) is recognized on the desktop of the iMac running 10.8.2 but not in the Migration Assistant. And before you can misdiagnose..it is not the Thunderbolt connection since I have the Apple recommended Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and also used the Firewire 400 to 800 cable to expedite the transfer.
    On a personal note...
    I'm not bashing Apple for this...they are "head and shoulders" above the competition in what they do but I've been burned a few times so I feel I can share a small bit of loyal customer advice...I understand your iOS and mobile products hold huge sway in company focus and market-share but I find it a tad unwise to slack on the desktop applications. I don't recall any app for the iPhone/iPad family being made on the iPhone/iPad...only from desktop applications if I recall correctly. And how can I clearly "Move my Mac even further ahead"  as your marketing states when I can't even migrate my files from my old Mac to my new one in a simple fashion as per your instructions?
    I thank anyone in advance with an answer or even a workaround for this issue and please have a great day.

    Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
    Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
    Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
    On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
    Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
    Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
    On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.
    Select the option "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" and click Continue.

  • SSIS PACKAGE MIGRATION FROM 2005 to 2008 - Script task/component errors

    HI All,
    We have to migrate ssis packages (about 300) from ssis 2005 to 2008 .
    1. I understand that the major concern is regarding the script component/tasks.
    I searched a lot about this and also consulted with many friends , all of them are aware of this issue but not able to provide what could be the issues and the solution.
    Can some one help me with the common script issues that can happen during migration and the solution for the same.
     2. I do have one more question.
    As per my understanding given in the below link
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mattm/archive/2008/03/21/package-upgrade-wizard.aspx
    there is this part which says ...
    Once the packages have been chosen, the next page asks you to pick the output location. This can be:
    Same as the source location
    File System
    SSIS Service (Package Store)
    SQL Server
    Does this mean I can deploy in sql server directly on fly while upgrading ?
    Any help highly appreciated .
    Regards
    Praveen..

    Hi Praveen,
    Question 1: The error may occur if there are duplicate input columns in the Script Task/Component or the current user cannot access the C:\Windows\Temp directory. Except for the link provided by SanBhaumik, you can also refer to the following
    threads:
    http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic811208-148-1.aspx
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/5c11eb57-59d6-4f81-bfdc-13bd6489a0ac/sql-server-2008-ssis-package-script-component-error?forum=sqlintegrationservices
    Question 2: We can directly save the package to the File System, SSIS Package Store, or SQL Server by selecting the proper destination during the package upgrade. However, this operation is not equal to the package install operation identically.
    For example, if we have enabled package configurations for a package, the package configurations won’t be upgraded or installed during the package upgrade.

  • Migration from Crystal Reports 2008 to Crystal reports Enterprise(BOE 4.0)

    Dear all ,
    I m currently doing a project on Crystal reports 2008 where datasource is mostly SAP BW queries.  Our customer will have BOE 4.0 in coming months .  I have heard that in BOE 4.0 Crystal reports for Enterprise will be a better option for BW datasources.Is that true? So here comes my question , Is  it possible to migrate reports based on Crsytal reports 2008 to Crystal reports for Enterpise 4.0  afterwards. What will be best option for us , shall we build further reports on Crystal reports 2008 or Crystal reports 2011 or should wait until we have BOE 4.0 ?
    Thanks
    Best regards
    Atul

    Hi,
    We are going through the migration process from 2008 to Enterprise version. The only issue we are facing is the mapping of the Hierarchy nodeid and parentid. Other than that we were able to migrate most of the pieces from the report.
    Here is the overview of migration process:
    1. When you run the upgrade manager to migrate objects from BOE 3.1 to 4.0 it will automatically upgrade it to CR 2011 version.
    2. You then have option to migrate it manually by opening the report in Enterprise version.
    3. If you open the report in Enterprise version it will prompt you to connect to common semantic layer wizard.
    4. Before that you have to have your datasource ready for that report depends on how your CR 2008 is connected. (can be BEx query or Relational Universe)
    5. If its BEx query you have to maintain the connection in CMC under OLAP connection to your BW system.
    6. Next thing is to map the Source fields to Target fields (BEx query or Relation Universe via IDT) and your report will be converted to Enterprise version.
    7. You might have to resolve if there are any errors.
    Let me know if you have any particular questions if i can help.
    Thanks.

  • If we are migrating from JRC to CR Java SDK, do we need RAS or any server

    Current situation
    e already have lots of clients running our product. We are using JRC to show the reports. Reports are designed in Crystal Reports Designer and hosted in the J2EE application servers. No modification/updating of these reports are needed from the client side. No need to create either full or part of the reports on the fly.
    Only thing we do on the report other than just calling the viewerSDK to view, is: we read the parameters from the (designed/hosted) report to do parameter prompting in our own custom JSP. We went to create our own JSP to prompt for report parameters, because, using JRC SDK, for some reason we were unable to get dynamic (drop-down) parameter showing the list of values. These dynamic parameters are list of values, user choose one. So these parameters are linked to a command with simple SQL like (select col1, col2 from table1).
    Current API ???
    I think we have this free JRC SDK. We have a directory called crystalreportviewers115 in our product deployment plus some JARS like (CrystalReportEngine.jar, CrystalCommon.jar, CrystalCharting.jar, CrystalExporters.jar, CrystalExportingBase.jar, CrystalDatabaseConnectors.jar, CrystalFormulas.jar, CrystalQueryEngine.jar, CrystalReportingCommon.jar, rasapp.jar, rascore.jar, ReportViewer.jar, etc) in our appserver j2ee classpath.
    Now there are two choices:
    1. Let crystal report viewer handle itself the parameter prompting; Then, I do not know if it is possible with this free JRC SDK or anything else that is open source. If it is possible with some upgrading can you please let me know some tips to goahead.
    2. Finding a way to read the parameter details like the SQL command, etc, so that we can show it in our JSP. I do not know if we still need to upgrade to a different version of SDK.
    I tried looking for a different or newer SDKs... It is confusing with  things CR for Eclipse, CR Java SDK, etc. Do not know which direction to go!!!
    Can someone guide me please.

    CR Java SDK consists of JRC + Veiwers Java SDK.
    CR Eclipse 2.0 is latest IDE in which CR 2008 features are integrated.
    There are different set of JRCs for different versions of Crystal Reports. But for CR 2008 there is no separate JRC has been launched yet, instead CR4E 2.0 Java SDK has been launched which is free.
    For more details about CR4E 2.0 please check out this link

  • Upgrade + migration from nw04 on windows 2000 to nw04s on windows 2008

    Dear all,
    I need to upgrade and migrate my nw04 java system from windows 2000 to nw04s on windows 2008.
    From the PAM I can see that NW04 is not supported on windows 2008 and that nw04s (7.0) is not supported on windows 2000.
    So, which is the correct upgrade path? Do I need an intermediate win 2003 server which is supported from both the releases?
    Thanks and regards in advance
    Federico

    Hello my friend
    This will be a very interesting project for sure. As you know, kernel 640 is not supported on win2008 and 700 is not supported on win2000, so here there must be a win2003 as a transition platform for this upgrade+ migration, not to mention migration from 32bit to x64 is also involved. You didn't mention the DB versions in source and target systems, as well as the SAP product you're trying to go with. Here's a brief checklist right now for what I can think of, once you're back with more details then let's make it intact:
    I assume your source OS/DB is win2000SQL2000 32bit, target one is win2008SQL2008 x64.
    1. Install a win2003 x64 server and SQL2000 32bit;
    2. Install a new SAP instance same as your source system release in 32bit compatible mode;
    note: if the system being migrated is BW, then be aware of that you might want to bring new features in SQL2008 of row compression and table partitions.
    3. Detach the source DB from old SQL2000, and attach it to new SQL2000; some post configuration for DB copy will be required (STM tool). Now you've finish a migration from win2000 to win2003 32bit;
    4. Start upgrading NW04 to 7.0, 640 to 700, find details in upgrade guide; Now you have your 700 instance on win2003 x64+SQL2000 32bit;
    note: since release 701(700 EHP1) is available now, which you might want to upgrade instead of 700.
    5. Change the collation 850BIN2 for SQL2000 32bit, detach DB;
    6. Since migration from 32bit to x64 cannot be done smoothly, now you have to uninstall everything and reinstall win2003 and SQL2008 x64, followed by a new 700 or 701 instance;
    7. Attach the source DB, post configuration for DB copy will be required (STM tool); Now you have your 700 or 701 instance on win2003 x64+SQL2008 x64;
    8. Detach the SQL2008 DB;
    9. Now go to your target win2008 OS, install SQL 2008 x64 and new 700 or 701 instance;
    note: there might be some restrictions for NW 7.0 on win2008, go with the latest release (SR3 or newer).
    10. Attach DB to this final OS/DB version: win2008 x64+SQL2008 x64, post configuration for DB copy will be required (STM tool).
    Helpful?
