Migrate itunes from pc to mac with multiple user accounts

I've read the numerous articles on transferring one's itunes library from a windows machine to a mac and I *think* I've got the details sorted (have itunes copy everything and then organize my library, then copy whole folder to external drive). I only have one itunes account but it my full library and itunes account is used across different windows user accounts.
My mac is setup with multiple user accounts and I'd like to have a single library and single itunes account (same apps, etc.,). I'm not quite sure how to migrate the library from windows and then set it up on the mac such that all mac user accounts are sharing the same library and itunes account. Any guidance?
Forgot to mention, have 2 iphones and 1 ipad as well, all attached to the same apple id.

  • Is there any information about using iCloud on a Mac with multiple user accounts (Mountain Lion)

When upgrading to Mountain Lion, you are asked to sign in using your iCloud ID.  I don't understand how to set up the proper synching of "stuff" if your Mac has multiple user accounts, and they each have their own iCloud ID.
The whole issue of supporting multiple users on a Mac and making everything easy to understand with regard to iTunes and iCloud is, in my opinion, currently in a state of disaster.  Apple needs to address this.  They have conveniently made it a non-issue on iPads by not allowing multiple users.  I can tell you that as one of the resident iOS and Apple experts in my office, most of the questions I get from others (not work-related) are on this topic.  It needs to be easier to understand and accomplish.
Thanks in advance for any information you have on this subject.

    no.

  • Multiple Macs with multiple user accounts

I have a Mac computer connected to airport and use Time Machine for backups. This works well.
I have now purchased a second Mac and would like to include this second Mac so that I can move between Macs and work. There does not appear to be any mechanism to allow this.

After searching the web and the discussion here, here's my minimal impact solution for multiple Macs with multiple users in a household:
    1) Set up Mac1 for myself only
    2) Set up Mac2 for the wife and kid
    3) Set up each Mac to backup to the Airport base station using Time Machine (this would create two separate backups on the Airport base station's drive, which from what I've read has its own problems)
    4) On Mac1 setup "empty user accounts" for the wife and kid. These will not have any files in them - just an access mechanism. If they want to access their files, they can use Time Machine's "The Browse Other Backup Disks Option" to get their file from Mac2, work on it and then drop it in the Shared Folder. Next time they are on Mac2, remember to copy the updated/created file from the Shared Folder into their Mac2 user account. If possible, get Time Machine to not backup the "empty user accounts".
    5) Do the same for me on Mac2.
Not the most elegant solution, but until Apple get off their backside and make this seamless, I can't think of anything else :-( .
P.S. iCloud is not a soluton since it costs hundreds of dollars a year, uses up intenet data allowance and is slow.

  • New Mac User: iTunes Auth with multiple user accounts

With a Mac with multiple user accounts, does EACH user account need to have iTunes authorized, or is iTunes authorized for an entire mac machine?

So then I assume that iTunes will know then if each of the computer's user accounts has a different iTunes account?
When you authorize an iTunes account on your computer, the authorization info is stored in \Users\Shared\. When you run iTunes, it looks there to see if it can play purchases. The purchase account info is embedded into each purchased file.

  • Sharing iTunes on a single computer with multiple users

    Greetings,
I have been troubleshooting a problem sharing iTunes on a single computer with multiple users that cropped up a few weeks ago and have not had very good luck.
Several months ago I successfully set up my wife’s G4 Laptop (PowerPC processor) so that we could share iTunes on that computer. I had just gotten her an “My Book” external hard drive (Western Digital). The iTunes Library will go on this new unit because the internal drive was running out of room. I successfully set the privileges, moved the entire library onto a “Share” directory and everything worked fine.
In this way, when I got a new CD I could add it to iTunes (under my login, administrator privileges) and she could access it (under her login) to listen to while working on the computer or using her iPod. This arrangement went well for quite awhile.
About a month and a half ago, when I tried to launch iTunes from my login I received this message:
“The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.”
I think the permissions must have changed when there was an update because my wife is pretty careful about what she does on her computer. Updates were the only thing I could think of that had changed since I had set her computer up. I also noticed that some of the iTunes defaults were different from the last time I had used it to add a CD.
So, I did some reading and went back through the motions of trying to set it up again. I re-formatted the My Book hard drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) added the files back to the external, reset permissions on the external hard drive. (Owners: System, Access: read and write - Group: wheel, Access: read and write – Others: read and write).
When I now launch iTunes under my login I get this message:
“The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.”
What gives? I am the original owner and have always had top-level privileges.
Can someone point me to any articles or clues as to how I need to set-up iTunes on a single computer to be shared by more than one user? Also, I am considering upgrading to the newer system in a few weeks, so if a solution for OS X 10.5 is available, that would work too.
    Tim

Was your wife logged into the libray at the time you tried to log in? I have had a similar problem and it was because another user was logged into the library when I attempted to. I got the permission denied banner.

  • Iphoto/preview crashing with multiple user accounts

    Hi everybody,
I'm stuck for a while now with my iMac and parental controlled user accounts.
It's for a few months now iPhoto and Preview keep crashing at starting up in these other accounts.
All works fine in my own administrator account. I'll copy a the first part of the crash state, maybe that will help.
I think the problem started with connecting a photocamera (Sony W125) directly to the computer.
It seems that viewing pictures (PDF/iphoto) is corrupted in this way.
    I'm working on an late 2011 iMac 2,5 Ghz Intel Core i5 /12GB 1333 / OSX 10.7.5
    Allready done:
    removed plists
    repaired permissions
    re-installed Lion
    re-installed iPhoto
give full permissions too all other accounts (checking out parental control i.o.w.)
made a new user acount with full permissions except administrator function (also crashes of iPhoto)
tried some searching in Root-account but where afraid to damage stuff.
looked around on the web but I couldn't find people with the same problem
Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

  • 1 Apple TV 2nd Gen, Windows 7 Computer with multiple user accounts

The issue that I am having is I have 1 Apple TV 2nd Gen and Windows 7 Computer with multiple user accounts.
When I log onto my Windows user account, open up Itunes and turn on home sharing my Apple TV work perfect but if another family member switches to their Windows user account without logging me out, the home share shows up on Apple TV but it just says "Loading ... Library" and never loads.
If we switch back to my user account, restart iTunes, everything is fine. Is there a way to keep my home share active in ATV2 across multiple user accounts? All of my video is under my account.

You can home-share multiple libraries but only use one account at a time.

  • IMac with multiple user accounts "cannot associate apple id for ....."

I have an iMac with multiple user accounts each with an Apple ID and individual iTunes library and Itunes match linking to iPhones iPads etc.
I bought songs on my iPhone yesterday, on trying to listen to them on the iMac (my user account) this morning I get the "cannot associacte Apple ID for another 31 day" meassage.
Is there any way round this? or is the answer only purchase via iTunes on the iMac in the individual account. Why do Apple do this?

I'm guessing it's for piracy reasons.

  • Having trouble with multiple user accounts

I am still getting used to Aperture and am having trouble with multiple user accounts on my Mac.
My wife and I have separate accounts on our Mac, and both have Administrator rights. We keep our Aperture library in the "Shared" folder, and I have made sure that both she and I have read/write capabilities on the Aperture library.
However, she has difficulty creating new projects, saving data, and viewing thumbnails in Aperture. Whenever she creates a project, it does not save into Aperture, and cannot be viewed by any user. In addition, changes she makes to photos do not save. She also cannot view thumbnails of any photos (although she can see the photos in the viewer).
Are there any changes I need to make to the user accounts so she can have all these capabilities?
    Many Thanks.

Rather than having the Aperture library reside in the shared folder, keep it within a folder residing at the top level of your mac, eg.
I actually keep mine on one of my RAID disks.

  • In trying to share music with multiple user accounts on one comp, I quit itunes, located my itunes media folder, moved it to a publicly accessible location. Problem is it didn't work and now I can't get it all back to the way it was.

In trying to share music with multiple users on one computer, I followed the directions on "iTunes:How to share music between different accounts on a single computer" (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203). I did something wrong because i lost iTunes
Tried to put files back, but it is not the same. Plugged in my ipod and it is not recognizing my computer.
Can someone tell me where iTunes should be, and what sub files should be included with it. Thanks!

If you are seeing the "Connect to iTunes" logo, then your device is in Recovery Mode, and you will need to restore it:

  • Login with Multiple User Accounts From One Machine

We have users with multiple accounts (Admin and Standard) in our organization and we want them to be able to launch RemoteApps from RDWeb using both accounts at the same time (from a single workstation).  For example we would want their standard account
to launch the RemoteApp HEAT and their admin account to launch the RemoteApp Exchange Management Console.  Is this possible?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not talking about concurrent sessions for a single user - I'm talking about multiple user accounts being used from an individual machine at the same time.  The situation would be as follows:
I log on to the computer with my normal user account (lets call it NZiehnert)
I launch an application from the RemoteApp and Desktop Connections shortcut in my start menu, which launches the application as NZiehnert
I launch the RDWeb access portal and log on using a different account (lets call it NZiehnert.admin)
I attempt to launch the same application from step 2 (or another application that runs from the same server) and instead of launching as NZiehnert.admin the application runs as NZiehnert
Basically, we have administrative tools that we wish to put into our remote environment, but we also have tools that are used by the same users normal accounts.  So we need a way for those users to be able to access the applications as a different user
    - at one point I was able to generate this dialog, but I'm not sure how to recreate it:

I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and a multiple user account set-up.  Hw do I create a path to store data files on the second drive within an application?

This is the Mac mini forum not the iMac forum however...
Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
    POSIX = /Volumes/volname/foldername
    Mac style = Volname:foldername:

  • Time Machine backup with multiple user accounts

How do I backup a machine using a Time Capsule/Time Machine that contains multiple user accounts? Ultimately I'd like to flexibility of using the Restore from Time Machine Backup command to port the user data of one account onto a new Mac. Thanks for any insight.

If Time Machine is enabled in one account, then when that account is active Time Machine (which is set up in that account) will backup the entire drive unless you exclude something. That backup will contain everything on the drive being backed up. You can restore either account separately, but when logged into one account you will not have access to files belonging to the other account. You can restore individual files and folders from either account, however.

  • Sharing itunes library on 1 mac with multiple accounts

I have got my daughter an iphone for xmas and created a new account on my wifes mini mac for her and want to share the main itunes account - i found this explanation (see below) but it still wont work?
I logged into my daughters newly created account then into the itunes account - prefs - look for shared music and....nothing!!!
i moved the "iTunes Music Folder" to the shared folder on my wifes account as described below.
    Quit iTunes.
Locate your iTunes Music Folder. It is stored by default:
    ~/Music/iTunes or ~/Documents/iTunes/.
These folders cannot be accessed by other accounts on the computer. In order for other users to be able to access your music, you must move it to a publicly accessible location.
The Public folder in your home directory (~/Public), or to another folder outside your home directory that other users have access to, such as /Users/Shared. Tip: The tilde "~" refers to your home folder. For more information see Mac OS X: Using Your Home Directory.
Drag the iTunes Music Folder to a publicly accessible location. Important: Do not move the iTunes folder, the iTunes 4 Music Library file or the iTunes Library.xml file.
    Open iTunes.
From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
    Click Advanced.
    Click the Change button.
Navigate in the Change Music Folder Location dialog to the location of your iTunes Music folder.
    Click Choose.
Repeat these steps for each account that is sharing music with other users.
Note: If multiple users of a computer are storing music in one folder, duplicate song files are generated when a user imports music from CD that has already been imported by another user.
See the "To listen to another account's music files" section below.

Is your wife's iTunes account still seeing all the music ok in iTunes after you moved the music folder?
So what you need to do in your daughter's account is open iTunes, preferences, change the folder location to the same location as the shared folder so when she adds music it will be added to that folder if you want to keep everything in the same folder. To add all that music to her library you have to go to File -> Add to library... then navigate to and pick that iTunes Music folder on the shared directory.
iTunes will now add all the titles to the library. Since the preference is to use that same location for her library and the stuff is already there and organized, iTunes shouldn't make any copies or duplicates.
Keep in mind that what you have done now is you have two iTunes libraries accessing the same media folder. Meaning, that each account can have their own ratings, playlists, etc. but more importantly, each account does NOT know what the other account does, so if your daughter adds a CD to her account, it will go into the shared folder, but it will NOT automatically go into your wife's iTunes library. She would have to add it manually. Likewise, if one account deletes music from their library and tells iTunes to remove it to the trash, the other account will not know and iTunes will still try to access the file from the shared location even though the file is now trashed,

  • Migrating Applications from Windows to Mac with new iPhone

My original first gen iPhone died a horrible death a few months ago. I had always synced it to my Windows laptop. I just recently acquired a new iPhone and want to sync it instead to my iMac. However, I have a dozen or so iPhone applications that I still want and I cannot figure out how to migrate the applications that are recognized by iTunes on my Windows machine and transfer them to my iMac. I even attempted to download an application I already purchased from my iMac, and I was charged the fee for the iPhone application instead of it just recognizing i had previously purchased the application.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Connect the iPod to the Mac and restore it in iTunes. Restoring in iTunes for Mac will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the mac version and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes
