Migrate Snow Leopard to Lion formatted HD
I own a 2009 MacBook Air which came with Snow Leopard. I have upgraded to Lion but wanted to go back to Snow Leopard so naively formatted my HD. How do I migrate from my Snow Leopard iMac now that my MacBook Air is formatted (under Lion)?

Manually migrating iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion..
Hi all,
I received a shiny new iMac yesterday and in my haste to get it up and running, I began to run the migration assistant on wi-fi. Unfortunately, my 2006 macbook model is so old that my firewire cables don't actually fit the firewire port on the back of the iMac!!
11 hours later, there was still 40 hours left to go. At this point I manually quit the migration assistant. Partly because I have to work and to work I need to use a computer and partly because I realised that I don't want all the old crud from my previous system.. all I want is my iTunes (songs, apps, playlists etc) and my iPhoto to migrate.
The original admin account that the migration assistant was going to replace was still there. Everything seems to be working fine... I did a quick repair of disk permissions and all seems fine. So, I think I flirted with danger by quiting the migration assistant, but danger doesn't seem to have flirted back.
I've searched high and low on the web and I can't find any advice on migrating just your iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion. I did read a post somewhere (relating to a migration to Leopard) where someone wrote that, for iPhoto, you simply had to replace your iPhoto Library in your pictures folder on the destination machine and then simply start iPhoto. iPhoto would upgrade the databases etc and all would be fine in the world. I cannot find a post online that suggests that this is also the case for Lion.
Can anyone here give me some hints on how to manually migrate the iPhoto and iTunes libraries over (and still preserve playlists in iTunes, albums/events in iPhoto etc)?
I figure that I cannot be the only person in the world who wants a "fresh start" on their machine, with the exception of iPhoto and iTunes.Resident apple gurus at work have advised me to use the migration assistant and plug an ethernet cable between machines.
I'll give this a go and then go through the process of removing and cleaning up whatever old data I can.. but if someone posts a response to this question for me, I'll happily roll back in time-machine and go again in a cleaner way. :-) -
Is it possible to migrate from snow leopard to lion?
My son just received his new Macbook Pro (15 "); he is running Snow Leopard on his 2008 model Macbook Pro. Is it possible to migrate from Snow Leopard to Lion using the setup assistant or does he have to upgrade to Lion first?
John Boley wrote:
CS and others in his college work and I have read elsewhere it is best to reinstall those programs.
True. 10.7 is a different animal and most all software has to be installed from fresh sources preferred. (cleans things up too)
There is CS6 now for 10.7, just released.
Check for comptability here, then make the decision if it's worth migrating the programs or not.

Will the setup assistant "automatically" try to transfer everything?
I don't know, I never used it.
Too hard core old school to use Apple's gimmicky and problematic software.
I rather clean install a new machine, only manually transfering files from the old one, cleaner setup that way and no hidden surprises or performance issues. -
I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp. I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion. Now I want to upgrade to a ssd. Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd. Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades? And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd. Do I use migration assistant? Do I need to make a time machine backup first? Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
Thanks for readingIf you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do. If it is something like this, an enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes. The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY. Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
2. You will need a HDD enclosure. One with a USB connection will do. A 9 pin Firewire is better.
3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE. From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field. Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'. Click on the 'Erase' button.
5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top). Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination' field. Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more. A Firewire will speed up the transfer. This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives. Start the MBP and you have finished the installation. The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.

I am new to mac's and have upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion but not all my application will work. Is it save to reinstall using original snow leopard dvd and does it wipe all my other application like apature? I am in a panic over this, any help!!
I came across this online and i want to know is it safe to do this:
Backup your User folders to an external drive. This should preserve your documents, photos, music, etc. If you store those things in locations not in the User folder, make sure to copy those over too.
Insert the Snow Leopard disc. Restart your Mac and hold down C to boot to your DVD drive.
Go to Utilities in the menu bar once the installer pops up and select “Disk Utility.”
Find the drive in the sidebar where Lion is installed, select it and navigate to the Partition tab.
Click on the drop down menu under Partition Layout and select “1 Partition.” Hit Apply.
Now navigate to the Erase tab and make sure “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” is selected, then hit Erase to delete all data on the drive.
Quit Disk Utility to get back to the Snow Leopard installer and proceed with the install.
Restore your User folder and documents from your backup.
Run Software Update to get everything current, install your apps from your original install media and update those as well.
if any one can help me that would be great, thanks MikeBefore you do that why not do this first:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If this doesn't help, then you can proceed to reinstall Snow Leopard as follows:
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard. I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
This will erase the drive so be sure to backup your files before doing this. -
After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?
If you have this product,

you have to go back to Snow Leopard.
To re-install SL, back up your home directory, format and re-install. -
Dual boot machine- snow leopard and Lion
It appears I will need to set up one of my machines as dual boot, containing partitions for Snow Leopard and Lion. The reason is that Quicken is NOT compatible with Lion, and will apparently never be. Intuits "solutions" are to go to other, far less capable software, or not upgrade. Which, of course means, NEVER upgrade again.
So, I think my best solution is to set up a partition for snow leopard and one for Lion. How do I go about this? Size of partition. How to partition? Which boot disks do I use to do this?
Any help is much appreciated.Ok, I just got done doing this yesterday so I can lay it out for you.
1: Copy all your user files to a regular external drive and disconnect.
2: Carbon Copy Cloner your 10.6.8 setup to another blank HFS+Journaled external drive and disconnect.
3: Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk and erase your entire boot drive in Disk Utility (under the Utilities menu) format HFS+Journaled (default) of course.
4: Quit and install 10.6. Setup with the same user name as Snow. Run the 10.6.8 Combo Update. Then Software Update.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
5: Use the MacAppStore to download Lion, BUT DO NOT INSTALL yet! Cancel it and click on the Installer and select "Show in Finder" follow these instructions to make boot DVD's and dmg images of Lion installer.
http://www.eggfreckles.net/tech/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
6: Once you do that, then Install Lion. On a pristine 10.6.8 with no third party programs or other BS it should go perfectly. Check it out that it's stable just in case or else hold command r and boot into the Recovery Partition and redownload/install again.
7: Once that's done and Software Updated, run Bootcamp and create a Windows partition larger than your 10.6.8 clone naturally. The size is up to you to decide. Cancel the Bootcamp when the partition is created.
8: Hold Option and boot off the 10.6.8 clone with all your stuff and programs, use Disk Utility to change the "BOOTCAMP" partition to "Snow Leopard" and make it a HFS+ Journaled partition from the MSDOS format (not the whole drive now or you'll lose Lion and the Recovery Partition) If this doesn't work then use Disk Utility c booted from the 10.7 DVD or command r from the Lion Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility there.
9: Once that's done, Option boot off the 10.6.8 clone and Carbon Copy Clone 10.6.8 onto the Snow Leopard partition.
Walla, a dual boot system with all your stuff intact. Just hold option upon boot and/or use the Startup Disk in System Preferences to set a default.
I'm currently working on a quad boot system now. It's got Lion, Snow, Linux and will have Windows too. A lot more complicated than simply Snow and Lion.
Note: OS X Lion reguires a internet connection to install, even from a boot DVD.
Enjoy. -
Restore to snow leopard from lion
Lion has proven itself to be way to buggy at this stage and I would prefer to go back using Snow Leopard.
If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files. -
As I can install applications of Snow leopard in Lion?

You should clone and backup before attempting Lion.
Set yourself up to do a clean format and install of Lion to external or internal drive - you will want to boot off an external to do so. -
When I updated from Snow Leopard to Lion, a new username w/administrative powers was created. Trying to merge old w/ new and retain all photos, music, etc of each but can't figure it out. Any ideas on how to do so?
I ended up calling Apple Tech Support for help on this. Got directed to a Mail expert. He had me move the following files from my home Library file folder.
~\Library\Mail\V2\MailData\Envelope Index
~\Library\Mail\V2\MailData\Envelope Index-shm
~\Library\Mail\V2\MailData\Envelope Index-wal
Then he asked me to quit Mail and then restart it again. When it restarted, it imported the mail (which the original migration had not done before). This solved about 90% of the problems. In my old mail folder in Snow Leopard, I had a Mail folder called Archive. Since this is now a reserved folder name, the import to Mountain Lion choked and it created five duplicates of this folder and its subfolders. I just deleted these and then went to Time Machine and brought in a single copy. The Rules and Smart Folders I had were gone and couldn't be resurrected, so had to spend some time and rebuild them by hand. But, now it all seems to be working well. -
Tiger vs Snow Leopard vs Lion???
I have a complicated case, see anyone can give a short cut.
I got a iMac with OSX Tiger and I got a Mac book with OSX Leopard. I sync my iphone to my iMAC but the latest OS version for iPhone do not support OSX tiger anymore (actually, should be OSX tiger no longer support by the latest version of iTune). I have no choice but decided to upgrade my tiger to Snow leopard (or Lion). However at the same time, I also would like to upgrade my MAC book from Leopard to Show Leopard, question:
Should I buy a family pack of Snow Leopard or you guys have other better solution?
BTW, is there any solution to sync my iphone to iMac and also my Mac Book?

If you need to support the latest IS iDevices & such, you habe no choices really other than...

Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
Lion/101.7 System requirements
• x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
• At least 2GB of memory[14]
• Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
• At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

Recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion then Mavericks. I have Final Cut Express and when I export to Quicktime, and open to play the movie, Quicktime starts to "convert" it? What is this about????
My existing movies are all the following types straight from FinalCut
Apple Intermediate Codec, 1920 × 1080, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
This particular movie is 6.66 Gb
The new Quicktime player in OS Mavericks converts these to the following format:
Apple ProRes 422, 1920 x 1080
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
And a movie size of 6.48 Gb
Please, please can someone tell me why? -
Mail issues when upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion
Hello,
I'm hoping someone out there may be able to answer this question or offer some advice. I am being prompted by Apple to move over to iCloud which requires me upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion. I am extremely reluctant to do this as I have heard of problems when migrating to Lion, especially with Mail. I presently have over 30,000 emails in my inbox. These mails are divided into a multitude of folders all on my mac. I have a mac email account along with other non Apple email accounts (POP) on my Mac. These emails and the folder structure are fundamental to my work so losing any emails or even the folder structure would be disastrous for me. I have of course made a backup (2 in fact) but do like the idea of trying to rebuild everything from scratch. Any advice would be greatly welcomed. Thanks.I'm no expert but at the moment I just woudn't do it as there appears to be lots of unexplained problems with mail and Lion. I have been a Mac user from the earliest days and have never ever had the kinds of problems I am currently having to work around since installing Lion. I wish I had stayed with Snow Leopard.

Transfer Mail from Snow Leopard to Lion
I have a new iMac and I want to transfer my Apple Mail from my older Mac Book Pro running Snow Leopard to it. I've zipped up the Mail folder that was under Library and I found out how to access the hidden Library on my iMac. I see mail has changed a bit in Lion and before I unzip my mail folder into /Library/Mail, I want to make sure I won't screw anything up.
Any suggestions or warnings?
Thanks.
- DanI suspect Migration Assistant of migrating some possibly corrupt files from a previous system, which in turn has evolved into frequent and persistent SBODs in my current system. Not that I can prove any of that, but in an effort to improve my performance, I'm working on (finally!) upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion (I know, just in time for Mountain Lion, right?). Rather than use Migration Assistant, I'm piecemealing the transition, moving a little at a time to see if I can figure out why my current system has gotten bogged down. If I can move a major piece and have it come out OK, then I'll move another little piece. When I get the big stuff done, then I can decide if I can live without whatever is left. Big stuff will be Mail, Safari (bookmarks, etc), NetNewsWire (the biggest part of that will be making sure the Google Reader stuff comes with it), 1Password and MS Office.
For Mail, is just the ~/Library/Mail folder and com.apple.mail.plist file from Preferences all that's really needed? I was reading an about.com article that talked about moving keychains folder, but that got me into trouble enough that I'm having to restart the Lion install on an external drive. Is the Keychains folder move necessary?
Thanks for whatever help might be offered.
