Migrated User Account Keyboard Problem AFTER Login

I have a brand-new MacBookPro (with multi-touch trackpad) that came with Leopard preinstalled. When I first started up the new computer, I set up a new administrator user account first. Then I used Migration Assistant to migrate my primary user account from my PowerBook G4, which is running the latest version of Tiger. I can log into my old user account with the same password I have always used, and everything looks fine--my old desktop is there, my Mail, iCal and iTunes settings all look great, etc.--but I can't use the keyboard. I can use the mouse to click on menus; the keys for the volume and backlight controls work, and some of the keys on the right side of the keyboard work (which seems particularly weird), but I can't do anything else with the keyboard. When I log out of the account and try to go back to the new admin account, the keyboard no longer works at all until I reboot. If I go directly into the new admin account, the keyboard is fine; it only starts locking up AFTER I log into my old user account. I have not had any keyboard problems with any other user accounts that I have created from scratch on the MacBookPro, nor have I had problems with the other user accounts I migrated from the PowerBook. After consulting with an Apple rep on the phone, I have tried the following things:
1. deleting my migrated keychain file on the problem user account and letting it make a new login keychain;
2. deleting the original default keychain on the PowerBook and re-running the Migration Assistant;
3. deleting the problem user on the MacBookPro using the option of creating a disk image, and then creating an empty file in the Users folder with the same name as the problem user account and then dragging the files from the disk image into the folder, and then creating a new version of the user account with the same name, password, etc.;
4. running Disk Utility to fix permissions (multiple times);
5. I have completely erased and reinstalled the system on the MacBookPro using the install DVDs twice. The first time, I ran Migration Assistant immediately after the "Welcome," and the second time I set up a new administrator account first and then ran Migration Assistant.
6. I have also tried the steps outlined in this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306840.
7. I have tried moving my user files over by hand but then I have a ton of permission problems and I was having trouble getting my Mail settings/mailboxes to move over properly. I've spent hours and hours on this.
I have NEVER had so much trouble upgrading to a new computer or a new OS in all the years I've owned Macs! What am I missing???

Well...I'm not sure which of the following fixed my problem, but once I realized it was something to do with the numeric keypad keys, I went into both the Keyboard & Mouse preferences and the Universal Access preferences and I made sure that I set everything back to the default settings. I suspect that going to Keyboard&Mouse-->Keyboard Shortcuts and clicking on "Restore Defaults" is what did the trick. So far, so good. I hope this helps somebody else; I couldn't find anything else anywhere about this somewhat quirky problem.

    Problem migrating user account SID
I’m trying to migrate user accounts SID from a Windows 2003 domain to a Windows 2008 domain using the command line admt.exe. There is a trust between the 2 domains and I’m able to migrate a user account using admt 3.1 wizard including SID. The wizard asks me for a user account in the source domain with administrative right for the SID migration.  In the wizard I use the same credentials as my current session. This works fine!!
But, when I’m using the command line “admt user” in an administrative cmd box i’m not prompted for any credentials in the source domain.  My current credentials have the proper right in the source domain so that should not be any problem but admt is not able to migrate the user SID and gives the following error:
ERR2:7615 SID History cannot be updated for xxxxx. You must be an administrator in the source domain
    Any ideas ??

  • User Account Control Problems with Premier Elements 7 32 bit in 64 Bit Windows 7

I found User Account Control Problems in other forums but didn't see much in Premiere Elements, so I hope this helps others who may be having problems with 32 bit programs in a 64 bit computor. When I first got my 64 bit I didn't have problems.
Back in February I bought a Quad Core Desktop with Windows 7 64 bit. Haven't been on the forum for 7 months since I wrote in regarding importing video with the Pyro AV Link (Premiere Elements Tips and Tricks). I was having problems importing video which started after March 28 sometime, as that was the last time I didn't have a problem importing VHS. Took me a few months off and on to find out what worked.
I started uninstalling Windows updates and any programs I had installed back to that point in time. Checked after uninstalling each item. The capture screen would come up on a delayed basis but clicking on capture did nothing. Although no driver is required for IE1394 (so they say) I read where some people using the Legacy driver had fixed some problems, so I switched to the Legacy. Seemed to work great (for a few minutes).
I had even uninstalled and reinstalled PE7 but no difference. Finally I noticed a shield in the PE7 Desktop icon. Thats weird. Never had that before. Just decided to show up after I had done all of the stuff I mentioned. Turns out at some point in time since I've had the computor Windows 7 decided to flag my 32 bit program as misusing the 64 bit system. User Account Control. I never bothered too much with UAC and just clicked on the yes box wen it popped up asking if I wanted this or that to take control of my computor. I tried using the minimum setting for safety reasons, and then finally turned User Account Control off. Bingo! PE7 capture works again and still working.
While I am not recommending that people arbitrarily turn UAC off, this appeared to be my problem. I would recommed that they try turning it off before uninstallin a bunch of stuff. Having a restore point may or may not have been a fix for me. I think one of the Windows Updates caused the problem but I am not going to uninstall any more stuff at this point, I have not been back on the internet or installed any more updates in my desktop. I am going to use my laptop for internet and used the desktop for video.
I am guessing this could be a problem for any 64 bit systems trying to use 32 bit programs. IE: XP,Vista,Windows 7 64 bit. In Vista there is also Data Execution Prevention (DEP) which you can turn on or off, supposedly to prevent misuse of memory (as I understand it), but Win7 either doesn't have it or I haven't found where it's located.
Maybe this has been covered in the forum somewhere and I missed reading it. Hope I am not too confusing. Anyway, whatever feedback you guys have would be great.

    John,
Thanks for your answer, and I did check out the link you suggested. However, I have Windows 7 Home Premium as most people have I think, and the XP program was not available. I started with Vista and now have Win 7. I never could navigate around in XP anyway so am content to just leave User Account Control off.
Interesting side note to turning UAC off is that my desktop seemed to be using more of the CPUs, where half of them were "Parked" as I wrote in also about 7 months ago when I 1st got my desktop. I am pleased to say that video processing seems to go quicker with UAC off. Have to observe things some more to confirm.
I just thought if others were having problems after installing Windows Updates and leaving UAC off worked then they could possibly pinpoint a problem.

  • Migrated User Account does not appear at login

Hi: I was having a few glitches with Leopard for my main user account (screen dimming did not work). So I backed up the computer to another disk using Super Duper. I did a clean install of Leopard, did the updates and then used the migration assistant to reimport my user accounts. On the first try, I actually did not migrate the main account I wanted so I used the migration assistant for a second time to import the user information I wanted.
A folder was created in the user folder with all the documents associated with the the main account I wanted to migrate, however on login, this user account does not appear.
Is there a way I can make this account appear at login.
    Thanks
    Mike

do the following. log in as an admin user and run the following terminal command (copy and paste, do not retype, please)
    sudo rm /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/short-user-name.plist
Instead of short-user-name put in the above the short name of the migrated user. It's the same as the name of that user's home directory in /Users folder.
You'll be prompted to enter your admin password (which you won't see as you type it). that's normal.
Restart and try creating the account with that shortname. it will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes".
you'll now be able to log in into that account.

I just did a security update and now the user accounts are not present. How do I fix this?

  • Migration Assistant won't migrate User Account settings

I have Mac OS 10.7.5 running on the internal hard drive of my mid-2011 iMac. Because I'm having some issues with it that I suspect is due to old data/settings affecting 10.7.5, I wanted to see if installing Mac OS 10.8 might fix them. I installed 10.8 on an external FireWire drive but just did a clean install of the OS initially without migrating anything from the internal drive. My plan was to migrate things slowly rather than everything at once. Well I hit a snag at the outset when I tried to migrate my User settings; Migration Assistant says it can't do with out renaming my user account! The problem is that I don't know why this is happening AND I don't know if MA is talking about the user account in 10.8 or the one in 10.7.
Any idea as to what I can do? I was thinking of wiping the external drive and starting over but this time have the User account(s) migrated as part of the install; might this work?
BTW, when migrating AFTER a new OS install, is it better to have MA in the NEW OS pull the data from the old OS or have MA in the OLD OS push the data to the new OS (is it even possible to do this? I've always had the new MA pull the data from the old OS.)?

OK, yesterday I wiped the drive and started over. When I got to the Setup/Migration Assistant, I was given 4 options:
Users; Applications; Settings; Other files and documents... Under the Users option was a drop down where I could select which users to transfer; I selected mine and left the other ones (a "Test" account & an "Apple Service" account). Under the Settings option I could select "Computer" and/or "Network"; I selected both. The Applications & Other... options did not have ant drop down selections; I de-selected both.
After the installation was complete, I let the iMac run for several hours with no hint of the slow down that happens on the Mac OS 10.7.5 system. I then used the Assistant and had my applications copied over. Oh, I also created new "Test" and "Apple Service" user accounts.
OK, so what exactly is migrated via the "Other..." option?

  • Problems only on main user account, No problems on new test account.

    Hi,
I am not sure how to describe the problem I am having other than to say take a look at the pictures and video and see if you can help guess whats causing it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN9FYRVgcv0
    http://picasaweb.google.com/BenLeeke/BlankBoxes?authkey=Gv1sRgCJuU1pin1uKJjgE&fe at=directlink
I seem to have blank pop up boxes despite using the latest browsers and OS. I am running OS 10.6.2 on a macbook and have tried Firefox, Chrome and Safari.
This problem also occurs in Dreamweaver and File Maker. Although not all the time. The dreamweaver problem is very annoying. A pop up box for file management turns black, occupies most of the screen and cannot be closed. So a restart of DW is needed.
This problem does not occur when I switch users on the same mac. So it seems to be not browser related but related to my main user account. Strange.
I do not have this problem on any of my other macs so it's defiantly this particular macbook specific.
I also get blank drop downs in other programs although sometime it does work and if you click half way down a list it will choose an item but you have no idea what you are choosing.
Should I try and migrate to another user account? How would I do this?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
    -mj
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

  • User Account Setup Problem

Hi! I finally have Mtn. Lion installed and running! I ran into the "damaged HD" cannot finish install, cannot go back to SL loop that has been discussed here. I was able to fix that issue by information I found here, and I am so grateful!
I now have run into what I hope is a simple question.  After setting up my user account, I went to setup the wife and kids. They did not have seperate user accounts prior to the upgrade, they just used mine. Since this was an upgraded OS, I decided to set them up their own accounts. I did that with no problem, the only thing is, I cannot change their login pictures without loading a new image in. The default are not loaded, I can find them in the library and add them one by one, but I was just wondering if there was a way to to load the whole group?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Ernie,
One other point that is relevant is that this problem is occuring on two Macs.
    In answer to your questions:
    1. Yes there are other .Mac accounts
    2. Not sure about this one but I doubt it since the client doesn't usually muck around with the fonts but they do move some Applications to a separate folder.
    3. It is the version distributed with 10.4 and all updates to 10.4.6 have been applied. I will get the client to confirm the Apple Mail version.
    4. No that is something I haven't tried. I will ask the client to try this.
    Thanks for your reply.
Also I've jsut tried to set the account up on a Mac with Mail version 2.1 (752/752.2) and again it failed with the same error message. This Mac has nothing to do with the affected client, and I've tried this one to eliminate any problems with moved Applications or font problems. On this same machine I set the account up in Entourage and it worked no problem. The mail server is OS X Server with 10.4.

  • T40 Keyboard failure after login

What I have:  a keyboard that will type my login, and fully function on "guest" login, but will not operate after login for the administrator.  When I try to type the keys make a slight "bonk" sound.
Previous to this I downloaded from the Lenovo website a system restore file that included BIOS update.
Think/Vantage Rescue and Recovery versions 4.21.0016
I have hit a brick wall on this.  Anybody have a clue?
I would consider reformatting, but the previous owner said he "wiped" the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of XP.  If the F11 key appears on start up would that guarantee that I am still able to reformat?
It all began when the internet cable connections were not working well.  Now I have bigger problems.

This must be an profile error I have made but I can't resolve this keyboard issue.  I am typing on the same TP keyboard now that will not work when I log in on another user profile.
I can type on all login profiles, but I can only type on "guest" keyboard after login.  Does that make sense?

  • Migrating user account on same computer?

I thought I'd be able to find the answer to this just by searching the forum, but everything related to what I wish to do seems to be talked about in terms of one computer to another. However I wish to migrate from one account on my computer to a fresh one on the same computer, which seems like it would be simple, but I've been unable to figure it out on my own.
The background is this: my G5 being four years old, my main user account that I have been using all this time has become a bit "sluggish." I created a new account and there is a marked difference between their responsiveness, both system-wide and on-line, so instead of troubleshooting what is bogging down the old account I thought I would just migrate over to the new one. Also, I was running the old account as admin, which I understand is not advisable, so I figured I would keep the old account for admin purposes while performing my day-to-day activities in the new account.
I was surprised to find that there is no way for me to easily access all my files on my old account from my new account (read and write) simply by changing a global permission. This would have been the "ideal" way for me to make this adjustment, as it really wouldn't matter which of these two accounts I logged in from, everything would be the same. Am I missing something here?
Barring a solution to that, I don't necessarily mind "starting fresh" and basically treating the accounts as separate computers. Address Book and iCal should be easy enough to export from the old account and import into the new account. Mail on my old account has grown huge (4GB) so I was planning to archive anyway with 3rd party software and start from scratch. The files I'm currently working on I will copy over, and then I guess anything prior that I need to refer to in the future I will just have to log in to the old account and copy over piecemeal. (Is there another way, other than simply copying 100% of my files from the get-go?)
If I'm understanding all of the above correctly, my only concerns are:
    1) Applications. When I launch 3rd party apps that require registration from the new account, some seem to be having some issues. Would copying the "Application Support" folder from my old account solve this, or will I only be able to use these apps from one account on my computer at a time?
    2) iTunes, specifically as regards my iPhone. Will I need to log into my old account each time I wish to sync with my iPhone? Is there any way that by instead syncing with the new account that I can mess things up and cause my phone or my apps to be de-authorized?
Many thanks in advance for any guidance you can give here. I hope I am not going about all this backwards and should rather just be trying to "clean up" the old account rather than make a new one to "mimic" it?
    Thank you,
    Josh

I recommend making a full backup of your system before trying this.
read the above post of mine for finding out the short user name of your second account and group name of your first account.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Net Info Manager
You can use the net info manager to add a user to the group. although I think the single command is easier to use. You can copy the first portion into terminal and type in the variable and information.
Here is the Net Info Manager way:
in the middle column click on groups. this will bring out the list of groups. Scroll down to your group from your first userid and click on at.
Click on the lot on the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Fill in your administrator password.
Click on the down triangle for the list of groups.
    Click on edit: add
    fill in your group name.
Mac OS X uses Unix permissions.
You will need to use BatChmod to change the permissions. Mac OS X doesn't let you change the permission to let others look in directories -- this is called the execution permission. The picture directory doesn't let others look at its files. You need to change this. You need to set the read-only and the execution permissions. And change it on group and other/everyone.
Sometimes things are not updated as you would expect. I noticed that the Red minus bar on a folder doesn't go way when I changed the permissions. I had to log off the user. You may want to be boot after changing the execution permission. It shouldn't be necessary.
"BatChmod is a Cocoa utility for manipulating file and folder privileges in Mac OS X. It allows the manipulation of ownership as well as the privileges associated to the Owner, Group or others."

You can use the get info command to find out file permissions and make the changes.
Click on the file of interest. Press command i (⌘-i)
Each file has an owning user and a group of users that are allowed to access the file. Also, there is a another access for all users. The owning user is the UID field. The group of users is the GID.
You could add yourself to your first Group. This would allow you to look at any file your wife owns.
The NetInfo Manager application allows you to make this change.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> NetInfo Manager
In the middle column is the function. Pick users in the middle column then select the user of interest in the right column. Find out what group you and your wife are in.
Now go back to the middle column and pick the Group. Now pick your wife's group. Now add your group to your wife's group. To add an item to a group, you need to look up and find the pulldown called directory > insert value.

  • Why are deleted user accounts showing up in login window and fast user switching menu?

There are several old user accounts, just test accounts when I was studying for ACSA that I deleted, which continue to show up in the login window and the fast user switcher menu. I deleted them before upgrading to Lion (I think it was before). The accounts do not exsist in the /Users folder, nor even the /Users/Deleated Users folder. Additionally they do not show up in the list of users in System Preferences. Can anyone give some advice on how to remove these "ghost" accounts from the login window and drop down menu?
    Thanks

Hi. Thanks for the link. Sorry it took me a while to get to this, the problem is not a show stopper, so to speak, so tried your advice when I had the time. Unfortunatly it did not work. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

  • Local user account not working after trying to connect to windows domain

    Newb Question
I was trying to log into a domain with my macbook today at work without success. I think I selected something that is telling my mac to search the domain for the user account, and NOT the local computer. So now when I boot it up the local user account isn't displayed, only 'other...'. When I click that it takes me to a log in text box that doesn't accept either my long or short user names. I booted up from the Snow Leopard disk and tried to change my password there, and that can see the local account there (and lets me change the password). However, when I boot back up from the HDD I get the same problem.
Is there a way of telling it to look locally rather than on the domain when logging in?

you could reset password on the root account from the boot disk also while booted to the system disk, open startup disk, and make sure your computer is set to boot from the built in hard drive.
This will enable root, and hopefully you can log into the computer. try logging in with the user name 'root' and what ever password you set. if you do get in, you can go to apple menu, system preferences, accounts, login options.
Make sure to set display login in window to list.
also make sure that when you click on the join button under login options, that there is nothing there. as in blank.

  • Migration Assistant Won't Migrate User Account from Time Machine

I am trying to move my wife's user account from a Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant.  Migration assistant chugs along for 2 1/2 hours and says everything was transfered hunkie-dorie.  However, when I try to log her on, I can't.  When I log on as me, I went to System Prefs --> Accounts, her username is there.  However, when I look inside the Users folder, none of her information is there.
    thanks in advance,
    tim

No Filevault on my computer and hers.
Doesn't work in Save Boot, either.  That is the puzzle.  Her account appears at the login screen--even the flower pic. that was migrated from from the Time Machine backup. The login screen will not accept any password.  I know I'm typing it correctly.  Her account appears in System Prefs --> Users, but it's not in the Users folder on my disk drive.

  • Problems after login

My Mac started doing this a few weeks ago, where after login it all kind of collapses.  Sometimes the desktop icons won't show up, or Hear (which runs on startup) will get stuck loading for a long time.  Sometimes everything seems fine but no programs will launch, or the dock won't respond.
So far I've done an Onyx cleanup run, a Disk Verify and Repair, Permissions Verify and Repair and even did the good old Command+R on startup and reinstalled Lion.  It worked the first time and then it went back to its old antics.
Any ideas?  I'm afraid if its a corrupted file and even if I get a new Mac (this one has gone through all kinds of things, including getting catapulted out of my backpack into the street in Hungary) then when I restore from Time Machine it'll carry over.
    Thanks

If a new user solved the issue, then you either have too many apps starting up at login and/or at least one which puts problems. In order to see what you have there go to system preferences/users and groups/you/login items, you must have a short list, as attached.
If not too many here, then you may have a corrupt system.

  • User account to available after restore from time machine

After havi g to erase my hard drive and reinstall Mountain Lion I could not aces my time machine backup during the installation process. Have been able to access The drive and perform restores from Time Machine however I cannot access my User account. If I try and add the account inSystem Preferences it states that the account with that name already exists but it is not available to log in to.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
There are a few possibilities. You've posted in the Leopard Time Machine forum, but your signature says you're running Snow Leopard. If you used a Leopard Install disc to restore a +*Snow Leopard+* backup, that's the problem. Try again with a Snow Leopard Install disc (you can use either disc to restore a Leopard backup).
If not, why did you restore? If you were having, say, internal HD troubles, it's possible that they corrupted your installation of OSX, those changes were backed-up by Time Machine, and restored. If that's a possibility, try the restore from an earlier backup.
If nothing seems to work, do an +*Erase and Install+* of Leopard, if that's what you're running; or start up from your SL Install disc, select +Disk Utility+ from the +Utilities Menu,+ erase your internal HD, quit Disk Utility and install OSX.
When your Mac restarts with only a fresh copy of OSX, +Setup Assistant+ will ask if you want to transfer your data from another Mac or Time Machine backups. Do so -- see #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.
