Migration Assistant  hanging

I've installed a new 500 Gb WD Scorpio Blue harddrive on MacBook, and running Migration Assistant to pull over settings, applications, and data files from old 160Gb harddrive (now in an enclosure connected by USB). After running all day, I returned to a message that some files (data, I believe), could not be pulled over, and to Try Again or Continue (implying perhaps those files would simply not be included?) Selecting Try Again led to the beach ball for about an hour, showing 82Gb Selected Items. Finally, came back to the screen Select the Items to Transfer, showing checks next to Applications 7.6 Gb, Files and Folders 5.3 Mb., and Library (grayed out) but checked at 1.0 Gb, for Selected Items total 96.8 Gb.
So does Try Again basically go back to starting over fully? Is there an order that is followed - I'm thinking all my data files have already come over "once", but they are not shown in Finder as of yet. I have entered a new "name" and "short name" in reponse to the notice "There is an existing user account with the same name as an account you are transferring" as it will not allow me to check the "Replace the existing user account with the one you are transferring", which is what I'd prefer to do but it is grayed out as an option. This then led to the "Transferring ... About 53 minutes remaining - Preparing to transfer user accounts" message.
If I get to the same point later today, and instead have to select Continue at a message saying something can't come over, is there a way to determine what it was unable to bring, and will Migration Assistant be able to continue to a "succesfull" completion?
Lastly, I gather this is a very slow process, as was the install of OS X and update to 10.4.11 over last night. Am I correct on this, or is it just the bottleneck of USB? In the future, I'd get a Firewire case, but if new macs are

As I recall it starts over.
MA is slow, on USB it can be excruciatingly so.
When it finishes next time, I'd just quit & see what is missing if anything.
BTW, did you Verify Repair the HDDs before starting?

My mavericks to Mavericks migration assistant hangs on the last minute. I am using Ethernet. What can I do?
This is the third time I've tried.

See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide, which might address the issue.

  • Migration Assistant hanging - 12 minutes to go

I've upgraded by Macbook Pro by putting in a bigger disc. I've tried using migration assistant to transfer the old system - twice now. Firstly from the snow leopard disc, then from the newly installed system.
Both times it hangs saying '12 minutes remaining'. There's nothing odd in the system messages - it just says that the migration started several hours before.
    Any suggestions?

I was reading these Migration-Assistant-hanging threads for a while looking for help, and I just wanted to note what ultimately worked for me. I was migrating from a Mac Mini to Mac Pro, both with Intel chips. I attempted it with an Ethernet connection between the two computers. With about a half hour left, the Mac Pro told me the Mac Mini was not responding. I clicked Cancel, and Migration Assistant got hung up on the message "One minute remaining" during the Cancel process. I left it that way for 12 hours and then called AppleCare.
After confirming that I had no menus at the top of the screen to use to Quit, and trying Command-Option Escape without success, they told me to power down the Mac Pro by holding down the Power key for 5-10 seconds. They recommended migrating from my last Time Machine backup, and recommended again connecting the Time Machine to the Mac Pro with either USB or EtherNet cable--not doing it wirelessly. I did this, and I was able to "complete" a migration successfully. But at this point, things were pretty messy on the Mac Pro drive. There were a couple of extra accounts and I had been forced to give my own admin account a name I didn't like. A lot of my music and movies had transferred during the initial, aborted migration, but I wasn't sure that all of it had and it wasn't located in the right account anyway.
So I used Disk Utility to erase the Mac Pro drive and ran through Migration Assistant again, this time using the Ethernet-connected Time Capsule from the start. That seems to have worked quite well.
One final note on this. The Migration Assistant that launches automatically during the setup process for a brand new drive has difficulty recognizing a Time Capsule hooked up through Ethernet. The AppleCare rep told me this is a known issue. So one has to click on the "No thanks, I'll transfer my data later" button, get through the setup, and then launch Migration Assistant from the desktop. Then it finds the Time Capsule no problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Migration Assistant hang

I'm using migration assistant to move my data from Time Machine on a non-apple external drive to a new macbook pro. It got stuck with 33 minutes remaining and when I opened Activity Monitor to see how much of my storage was in use, I noticed that it had transferred 328gb of 400gb or so of data (consistent with where in the status bar Migration Assistant was), but the precise amount is increasing or decreasing by a small amount every time it refreshes. For instance, one second it will say 328,981,555,500 bytes in use and the next it will say 328,981,540,000 bytes in use and then bounce back up a little higher or lower.
Any idea what is causing this and what I should try to do?

    RESOLVED.
    My solution was to
Boot up the New Mac while pressing T,
then hook it to the old mac and use Disk Utility to Erase the The new mac's Drive,
Then Boot up the New Mac,
and insert the OSX disk that came with the New mac,
and reinstall the OS on the new Mac.
This put it almost back to the Default that it was when it arrived.
I then hooked the Old mac to my External HardDrive, and turned on TimeMachine, and then did a backup.
    When it was done,
I turned on the new Mac, plugged in the External Harddrive, and used the TimeMachine Backup to transfer all the data at the Welcome Window, instead of the Old Mac.
This took about 5 hours, and it gave me an error, but the error was minor.
The error said that my old mac, and new mac, both use a FIXED IP to connect to the internet, and it would cause issues. I need a fixed IP at work.
I then inserted the Application Disk, and reinstalled all the new iLife stuff.
    I'm good to go now.
My suggestion is, to check your Internet settings before doing your transfer. I'm going to reTest this, but if someone else wants to try it, let me know.
It's the only error I got, and TimeMachine didn't HANG, it just dumps bad stuff into a Folder.
    Hope this helps you guys.

  • Migration Assistant hangs during "Transfering Information"

I have just purchased a Mac Pro and are using Migration Assistant to transfer files, etc from my G4 Dual 867 (running 10.40.10). The G4 goes into “Fire Wire Target Disk Mode” with no problems. When I boot my Mac Pro, during the initial “Welcome” sequence, it sees the G4, but hangs during “Transfering Information”. I have tried transfering only my settings (10k) incase it the 20 or so gigs was too much data, but this failed as well.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

I'm experiencing the same problem as the person who initiated this thread. I repaired my earlier system's drive with Disk Utility, and still the whole process hangs up on the "Transferring Information" screen.
What the heck? This shouldn't be very complicated, should it?

  • Migration assistant hangs when inspecting my pc

I have installed Windows Migration Assistant on my PC. When I start it from Utilities on my iMac and connect it just hangs while inspecting my pc. I left it for 24 hours before closing it down. Does anyone have any suggestions please?
    Thanks

I know it's too late for the original poster, but I was having this problem as well. I quit migration assistant multiple times, relaunched, and it kept getting stuck on 'inspecting...'
I went ahead and rebooted both the Mac and PC, tried again, and it worked! Not sure which needed to be rebooted (although my hunch would be Windows because the Mac was brand new), but either way... when in doubt, reboot!

  • Migration assistant hangs

Macbook air hangs with migration assistant

I had the same symptom as your second attempt - Migration Assistant hung partway with no diagnostic information. The old Mac's drive icon was unresponsive as well; it was as though its disk had gone to sleep.
Next I made a backup of the stuff I wanted from the old Mac to an external drive using the Finder, which also got partway before throwing a well-diagnosed I/O error in a particular file, presumably a bad block. After the backup completed, I moved the bad file out of the way and tried Migration Assistant again: bingo, it worked just fine.
Apparently Firewire target disk mode doesn't handle bad disk blocks well (understandably), whereas MacOS X can.

  • Migration Assistant hangs when transferring data from Windows 7 to mac

My PC is a Windows 7 64 bit.  When I run Migration Assitant, I get as far as the screen that has my Windows Name and my Windows Account Name. Those are filled in automatically.  When I click "Continue", nothing happens.
    Any ideas?  Thanks.

I agree with the idea of an enhancement request, MA should have some more options if used later, normaly users a curious to log into the fresh system, and transfer data and settings at a later date.
Unfortunately, a "merge" option, where it would add things to an existing user account, isn't realistic.  That would work fairly well for such things as documents, where everything is in separate files (although settings and preferences would get a bit tricky).
But not for things like iCal, AddressBook, or Mail, where there are complex structures.  Trying to merge those in any automated way would be very complex.   Even worse would be 3rd-party apps that Apple can't possibly know how to handle.
One thing that might help would be rewording the "You can transfer information later using Migration Assistant" line at the bottom of the Setup Assistant window:
A number of us have asked for that to be worded differently -- warning that it's much better to do it first, or not to install stuff you're going to need, or something.   All to no avail, of course.

  • Migration assistant hangs in the last minute

Got a  new MacBook Pro and using migration assistant to transfer from MacBook Air over thunderbolt. It will not complete.
Updated OS on both. Gets to less than a minute and never finishes.

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart. Test. If the migration wasn't successful, see below.
    1. Migration may stall with "Sharing Only" user accounts
    2. Back up the old system with Time Machine or Disk Utility and try migrating from the backup.

  • TS1963 Migration Assistant hangs at 29 hours

Bought a new iMac yesterday. When i fired it it up the new Mac offered Migration Assistant. And so I did follow the prompts and got the migration started. I was using the wifi connection to do this. This morning I found that after 18 hours the time is still at 29 hours and and the progress bar has not moved. When I looked at it last night the time was 29 hours so no difference. I am considering shutting down both Macs.

Quit using the Wi-Fi, it's by far the slowest and least reliable method. Use a Firewire connection, if your old Mac uses FW400 then you will need a cable like:

which is available at any Radio Shack, computer store or of course Amazon.

  • Migration assistant hanging in Yosemite

My iMac hard drive failed and had to be replaced. When I got the machine back, I was hoping that I would be able to restore from my Time Machine back up on an external hard drive.
I upgraded the new machine to Yosemite (as the previous drive had been) and then restarted, ran software update, restarted again and plugged in the time machine disk. I ran migration assistant and it seemed to work -- for a while. It started saying about 6 hours, then went up to about 10 and came gradually down. For the past two hours it has said 59 minutes left and the bar doesn't seem to be moving. It's probably about the 80% mark.
What should I do? How many hours do I need to wait before I decide the migration has failed, and if that happens, what do I do next?
I want to make sure that whatever I do doesn't start writing any new data to my time machine back up as that disk is my only chance to recover everything on my failed hard drive. Any advice would be very gratefully received.
    Many thanks in advance

Managed to transfer the apps over using TimeMachine. Performance is now degraded with wheel spinning every time I try to do anything. What's the best way of doing a totally fresh install and starting again, or is there a better fix?

  • If Migration Assistant hangs up in the middle of the migrating process what should I do?

What is the Migration Assistant's default behavior in Lion? About 3/4 of the way through a 10 hr. process of file migration from my old PC to my new Mac Mini the Migration Assistant has hung up on me.I am scared to close it out and start over for the fear that I will have to transfer the whole lot of files all over again. If I do close it out and begin the process again will the migration assistant pick up where it left off or will it indeed start from scratch from the very beginning?

    Kamath,
If the channel is inactive , it will error out in Integration Engine itself, so u can restart those messages manually.
Also, lets say the receiver system is not reachable(example JDBC), then what happens? You can find those messages in
http://host:port/MessagingSystem/monitor/monitor.jsp . In the window left frame choose Received Messages , in the right frame choose Status Not Delivered. Change the time frame and click tab(there is no enter) , u can find list of messages. Now for each message u can find two options Delete, Re-Deliver ,click on Re-Deliver the message, it will go thru.

  • Migration Assistant hangs "calculating"

I'm trying to do an upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard. I used a new hard drive with a clean install of Snow Leopard.
First, I tried to copy my data over during the installation, but the welcome movie would reset every time I got to the part where I selected the source disk for Migration.
I skipped that part and booted into Snow Leopard and did the combo update to 10.6.2.
    Then I tried Migration Assistant.
    1. Used old hard drive in an external enclosure connected via USB. After 3 hours, Migration Assistant was still "Calculating..." the disk space for importing my old data.
    2. Used most recent Time Machine backup connected via USB. Again, it is still "Calculating..." after an hour.
Any ideas? I seem to have two options:
    1. Copy data manually and lose a lot of settings (e.g. Keychain)
    2. Do an over-the-top install (boo!)

Any ideas? I seem to have two options:

  • Migration Assistant hangs w/ waiting for old computer to restart

We're attempting to transfer data from an older MBP to a recently purchased Intel MBP. Firewire cable is connected and old MBP was rebooted into Target Mode with Fire Wire icon present on scree. But MA does not recognize that the older MBP has been rebooted and is in Target Mode. The prompt says: waiting for your old mac to restart. I shut down the older MBP and tried rebooting with no results. Any suggestions?

repair the drive on the old mac with disk utility on the new one. repair disk, not permissions. see if that makes any difference.
