I have bought the mini DVi to HDMI cord and have no audio. I've researched and just wondered exactly which cord I need to buy. I've read so many but I really want a simply solution.

If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. No MacBook carries audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 with the Mini DisplayPort.

Yeah, I'm having the same exact problem - It seems that the thunderbolt minidisplay port is only able to output the analog VGA signal, not the digital signal to support DVI and HDMI. This is a bug that came up after installing 10.7.1. I bought my macbook air with 10.7 on it, upgraded it to 10.7.1 as soon as I got it, so I have never been able to use hdmi or dvi with my macbook air. This is an extremely frustrating problem for me, I used HDMI on a daily basis with my PC. I have spent many hours at the genius bar running diagnostic tests so Apple can get as much information as possible to create a fix for this problem. I have been emailing tech support for 3 or so weeks now, they keep saying that they are working on a fix and it should be out soon, but 10.7.2 has come and gone and I still have no HDMI functionality with my MacBook Air!

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

I have a brand new 13" macbook pro hooked up to a 40" Philips LCD TV and I'm getting a lot of lag just even moving the mouse. About half a second. Any ideas?

I'm getting the same issue connecting early 2010 MBP 13in through a moshi mini display to hdmi to my 40in samsung. Pictures is great, but the communication between computer and television is about 1 second behind. If anyone figures this out please share.

No. The black MacBooks don't send audio through HDMI, so you'd need to connect the audio separately.

I have a MacBook running 10.5.7 connected to a 1080P-capable Toshishba TV (model 42XV555). I also tried this with 10.5.6 with same results.
They are connected via a "shuttlez" mini-dvi to hdmi dongle and then via a "wegi" hdmi to hmdi cable.
The TV has three HDMI inputs, one designated for computer input via HDMI with a separate input for analogue sound.
THE MB recognizes the TV and displays a separate Toshiba-specific control panel with display control panel is up. It defaults to 1600x90 and 60Hz. The Macbook adjusts every time the tv is connected - there is communication - flashing screen, MB screen re-adjusts.
S-video works fine, via mini-dvi to s-video donglr, then svideo cable.
It has worked twice with the MB and connected with HDMI - just twice. I have spent hour after hour tweaking resolutions, re-booting, changing cables, HDMI ports on the TV etc! When it worked I could mirror and use the screen as a separate, larger display. It worked in clam-shell mode too.
My question is - are there any know problems getting this combination to work (ie MB, mini-dvi to HDMI)? It can work but I am missing some knowledge on the exact combination required.
What are the optimum settings to have this TV display HD from the MB, or come to that any HD 1080p-capable TV??

I'm attempting to connect my MB to a plasma 50 inch Panasonic TV, and am about to purchase the necessary cables from www.monoprice.com.
I've discovered so far that the HDMI connection directly between the MB and the TV (using the appropriate mini DVI adapter of course - product # 4852 at monochrome.com and an Apple HDMI cable which I'll return to get a better price at monochrome) transmits only video/pictures but not audio.
So far, an old, short RCA (red/white) 2-way audio test cable (again using the appropriate adapter to connect to the headphone jack on the MB) does not transmit audio directly to the TV.
1) Could audio be transmitted from the MB to the TV using a "Coax (RCA) to Optical Toslink Digital Audio Converter" (product ID # 2947 at www.monochrome.com) to connect directly to the TV (in which case, what digital audio cable would I need to connect the converter to the TV)? And if so, would it be stereo or mono?
OR...
2) Should I wait until I get my Onkyo surround sound system (later this week) to see if the RCA cable will transmit directly from the MB to the sound system?

Mini dvi to HDMI with Vizio VW37L does not work

I just purchased a mini dvi to HDMI connector and tried to use my 37 inch Vizio VW37L as a display. It didn't work. Then I read some reviews that MacBook doesn't have a preset resolution that would work with Vizio, nor does MacBook have a way to make a custom resolution.
I was saw some advice to download a program called SwitchResX and I did. This program caused my screen to go gray and I could not find a solution so I had to restore my MacBook.
I want to use my TV as a display via HDMI. How can I do this? FYI I will not put SwitchResX back on my Macbook. It took forever to restore last night being that it is two years old and all the security updates that I don't have on boot disk right now take forever to download and install.
Advice please. Also, would dvi to VGA be that bad? I guess I'm just spoiled with digital video that I didn't even think about trying analog.

I may be able to offer some input as I was successful in connecting my macbook to my HD Samsung Plasma TODAY. I bought the Apple mini-dvi to DVI adapter and the Dynex DVI-D to HDMI Cable. I'm not sure which macbook you have, but you'll have to determine if you'll need the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter or the Apple mini display port connection. So if you have a mini display port, substitute what I have below w/mini display port.
1) Put the apple mini-dvi to DVI adapter in the port on your macbook.
2) Attach the Dynex DVI-D to HDMI to the apple mini DVI to DVI adapter.
3) Attach the opposing end of the Dynex DVI-D to HDMI cord to the TV. On my set it is the HDMI1 (DV1) slot.
4) Check your TV manual to see what the display settings need to be on the computer. In my case it was 640x480.

Having a problem with mini dvi to hdmi. Can see the background, but must move all screens all the way to the right to see on tv. Any solutions?

I can connect and see the background picture from my macbook (approx 4 years old) but in order to see any screens or video, I have to move the screen almost all the way off the macbook display to the right. You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Displays on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will makethe second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in ClamshellMode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

...I am having trouble connecting it to my 42" Panasonic Plasma 720p. I purchased a mini dvi - hdmi adapter and plugged everything in and just got a blue screen on the macbook and nothing on the tv. I am sure that the right input was used on the TV. I also tried using the same setup on my other 32" lcd, but had the same problem with the macbook. What am i doing wrong. Should I try a mini dvi to s-video and use that or would the picture suffer. Since my tv has the hdmi, I would really like to use it...I called apple, but the referred me to the forum or pay them $50 to try and figure out the problem. I am having an identical problem. Unfortunately, I cannot quite follow the syntax of the response to the original post. I have a Macbook 2.1 and I am trying to hook up to an LG 32LH20 TV. I got the Mini DVI to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable at eh Apple store. Connected the HDMI cable to the HDMI IN jack on the back of the TV. They also sold me an audio cable with the 3.5mm jack on one end and the red/white AV plugs on the other end.
Once all of the cables are hooked up, it doesn't work...exactly. If I switch the TV input to 'Component', I can get the audio of whatever is running on the Macbook, like from a Netflix movie. As for video, the only thing I get is when I switch the TV input to 'HDMI'. Then, all I get is the generic Apple purple sky. The only things that I can get in the screen of the TV that also shows up on the Macbook are when I open up things like the System Preferences menu. No browsers or other apps.
Can somebody please help me further?

Mini dvi to hdmi connection issues

Trying to set up my 2007 imac to my Panasonic tv. I have a mini dvi to hdmi converter and an hdmi cable connected to my tv. I only get a blank screen on the tv, but it seems that the computer is connecting. When i go into sytem preferences for display monitoring I get the second screen saying Panasonic and set up which reolution I want but theres no way to detect the display. Any help getting picture would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you have the correct HDMI input selected in the TVs menu...?
Aditionally, there might also be settings for connecting a PC to the TV.

Mini-DVI to HDMI Issues

I have an early 2008 Macbook and have been using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable to connect to my TV. It was working great until I upgraded to OS X Lion. Now the video is laggy/glitchy on the TV and the computer when the cable is plugged in. Any help?

Try gently moving the adapter into different positions. My mini-dvi to dvi adapter will only work if it is tilted upwards at about a 20 degree angle relative to the tabletop. I usually wedge a pen or a pencil below it to hold it at the proper angle. It's a little redneck, but I like shopping at walmart and only spent $5 on the adapter.

Mini DVI to HDMI display help?

I have a MBP and I bought the Mini DVI to HDMI cable and it looks great on my HDTV. But I am wondering if there is a way to use the TV as a monitor and still use the laptop at the closed position?

With a MacBook or MacBook Pro, if you connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, you can close the screen (which will put the system to sleep) and then wake it up by pressing a key and use the external monitor as the primary monitor. It should work with your HDTV as well.

Connecting mid-2007 iMac to LG TV via mini dvi to HDMI

I am trying to connect my mid-2007 iMac to my 42" LG HDTV to no avail. I am running iOS 10.6 Snow Leopard. I bought the mini dvi to HDMI adapter and plugged the iMac into the TV. I went to the display tab in the system settings and see that the iMac recognizes the tv. I went to the arrangements section and it recognizes the tv. When I click on gather windows it even calls it the LG TV. However, there is nothing showing on my TV. It says no input detected. When I move my mouse to the right side of the screen it disappears like it is going to a second monitor.
Any thoughts?

I was having the same issues as you(yes Frankie, I made sure I was selecting the correct hdmi input). Now with the same setup, my LG recognizes the HDMI input from my iMac. It says connecting but then 'no signal' on the screen. The hdmi2 is still showing a connection in 'inputs' just no picture on TV. I started changed the setting via my mac but still nada. The lg is 120hz. Does that have anything to do with it? Thanks

Seems like this is a fairly common problem from what I've read, but I'm having some issues connecting my mid-2007 iMac to my LG 32LH20 HDTV via a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and an HDMI to HDMI cable. The adapter and cable were purchased off of Amazon (product links here and here), but the Mac and TV don't seem to be recognizing each other - the TV registers no signal when the HDMI input is selected, and the Mac doesn't register a second display under the Display PrefPane. I'm assuming there's something wrong with the cable, but I've also read that it may be an issue with driver compatability in OSX 10.6.7. Any ideas?

I am trying to connect my Macbook 4.1 Black to my Samsung UE50F6400 using a mini DVI to HDMI adaptor

I bought the UE50F6400 samrt TV. It has 4 HDMI ports. HDMI 4 is HDMI/DVI, HDMI 3 is normal, HDMI 2 is (ARC) and HDMI 1 is (STB).
reading the connection diagram it shows Laptops are to be plugged in to HDMI 4 (HDMI/DVI). But when I plug a HDMI cable in and the other end to the adpator while the mini DVI connection is in the Macbook DVI port. All that happens is the Macbook (4.1 black) screen just flashes blue. This is the same for HDMI 1 & 3, however when it is in HDMI 2 (ARC) the Macbook screen displays. I tried switching TV of and rstarting macbook but still no display on TV. I tried changing display setting such as resolutions and refresh rate on the display preferences and still no display on TV.
Please can someone help?
