Missing Artist

I'd be interested if anyone else has seen this problem:
An artist that had only days before been on my ATV is missing. When I looked at the ATV content from iTunes on my Mac - the artist was there !

Thanks for the suggestion Chenks,
The tags look ok - I have not used Album Artist (almost) anywhere, and the rest of the albums & artists all appear correctly (except a few).
On your advice I added Album Artist and synched the ATV. No change I'm afraid.
I'm kind of glad it didn't work - the prospect of adding that field to 5500 songs didn't appeal.
Here's an example.
Name: "Ring Of Fire"
Artist: "Johnny Cash"
Album: "Ring Of Fire"
Composer: "June Carter-Merle Kilgore"
Genre: "Folk"
Year: "1963"
Track: 1 of 21
Disc: 1 of 1
That's all of the metadata for this AAC audio file.
When synched to the ATV - there is no Johnny Cash in the Artist list. However, "Ring Of Fire" is in the Album list - every song from the album is in the Songs list.
What on earth is going on ?
I don't believe it's a corrupted AAC file - it would have to be every AAC file for each of the artists that are missing from the Artist list.
iTunes is functioning normally.

Have you tried adding it back in from Settings? Scroll to Settings on your iPod and press the centre button. From here scroll to Main Menu and press the centre button again. From here scroll to Artist and press the centre button to toggle Off to On. Press Menu a couple of time to return to the main menu.

  • Missing Artist names in iPod under lookup but the song is there

I have all the approx 7,000 tunes on my LapTop that sync's into my iPod OK but there are some missing "Artist" names in my iPod when I lookup by Artist but the song is there in song lookup and it has the Artist name it the display.
Some answers to some questions, my helper's maybe asking themselves are............
I've loaded the songs into iTunes from the web as well as via CD's online with "Grace Notes" inputting song info also with me off line loading in songs from my internal and external hard drive. I have converted all songs that weren't under the option (create an ACC Version). My understanding this is this to create a .mp3 file within the iTunes Music Library Folder. I would then delete the originally song
Any help or questions for me so far?
    Befuddled......

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a song info window, and by selecting "options" you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.

  • Music App Missing Artist Under "Artists", Exists Elsewhere

I just backed up my iPhone 4S and restored that backup to my new iPhone 5. I tried to use the music app to play a song by an artist, let's use Kanye West as an example. Under Artist I no longer have any listings for songs by Kanye West. However, if I go to Albums and find an album by Kanye West, this album is indeed there. When I play the album, it clearly says the artist is Kanye West.
So why isn't "Kanye West" showing up under Artists if his music is clearly there with the correct tags? Is anyone else missing random artist listings on iOS 6?

Anyone? Should I ask this somewhere else?

  • Missing artist name in album view using remote app

since updating to itunes 12 and latest remote app artist name is missing in album view

Same problem here. I think it happened when my computers updated my windows itunes to v12 without asking me.

  • Where are my missing artists?

I was going to ask which files I need to back up to avoid having to rip my CD collection for a second time (it took me three months). Had a quick browse in the Finder and Found (ha!) that there's a very limited number of artists in Music>iTunes>iTunes Music.
Also the iTunes folder takes up ~16GB but my iPod has 41GB on it. Where is everything else? And once I find everything which folders/files do I need to back up?
    iMac Intel 20"; 512MB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G5 iPod

I think I've found the missing files. Now I need some advice as to how to marshall everything back to where it belongs.
The original iTunes folder (within Music in the Finder) amounts to 16.92GB. I've found a second iTunes folder, taking up 25.7GB, within the Audio Hijack folder where recorded streamed audio goes.
So now I have two iTunes folders, each containing identically named folders/files called Album Artwork, iTunes Library, iTunes Music and iTunes Music Library.xml. In addition the iTunes folder (lets call it iTunes folder 2) within the Audio Hijack folder contains a folder named Previous iTunes Libraries.
No doubt it's a simple exercise to reconcile everything and I'm probably being over-cautious but is it OK just to give everything in iTunes folder 2 a slightly different name then move them into the original iTunes folder?

  • Missing Artist Photo in Music App

Some of the artists with photo in iTunes Store does not show the photo in the Music App on my iPhone.
For example, if you search Mai Kuraki on iTunes Store, it shows a photo of the artist. From what I know, this means that the music app will show this photo in the artist tab. However, there are quite a few of artists who have a photo but there're not showing on the music app.
I have tried to open iTunes Store on my phone and sign out then sign in again. There's still no refresh on the music app.
    I'm using iPhone 4s with iOS 8.1.3

I Have the same issue. At all other views, album, song, lists, including landscape view, the artwork are visible. The only problematc view is Artist View; most of artist show the generic silver box! Any solutions????

  • Missing Artists in Music Icons

I was wondering if there is another solution to this problem besides restoring. I hate restoring because it ereases all my music and putting it all back is very annoying.
When you press music, at the bottom you are supose to have a choice "Playlists," "Songs," "Artists," "Albums," "More."
Unless of course you edit it and put "Composers Aubdiobooks, ect". But either way, there are Five options at the bottom of the screen. For some reason, when I was editing my bottom for, the artists just disappeared and I tried to stick it back in, and the iPod insisted that only four icons were meant for down there, not five. I can't seem to know how to stick artists back. Everytime I do, it just replaces playlists, songs, or albums.
Anyone know how to keep it down there?

Yes. I know you can't have five plus more. Right now I have three plus more, not four. And I did restore the iPod.
    Ideas?

  • Missing Artist name in CD import

When importing CDs to Library why do some Artist's names not appear in Browser artist pane, even though Album will apppear in album pane ?? This happens across my 3 computers including Vista OS on one computer ?

Is this artists on compilation albums? In iTunes, if an artist is only on a compilation album, that artist name will not appear in the artist browser pane. However, if you then add an album by that artist - so the artist has an album of their own in your iTunes, then the artist will appear in the browser and when you select the artist, the album browser column will have the compilation album with their tracks as well.
Oh, and if your answer was "no, this is the "greatest hits album" by an artist, the chances are it's marked as *part of a compilation,* which it shouldn't be (because iTunes then thinks it's various artists!). Check this by selecting just one track from the album and clicking *File/Get Info.* On the info tab, is *part of a compilation* ticked on? If so, you need to change the whole album. Thing is though, when you select all the tracks on that album the *part of a compilation* is now on the Options tab as a drop-down menu.

  • ITunes 10.01 bug, missing artist (s?)

Seems not all the artists are being displayed in the Library/Artist Column.
    Picture shows it all

    Anyone else notice this issue?

    To clarify...
The option iTunes > Preferences > General > Group Compilations morphed some time ago into two options:
View > Column Browser > Group Compilations and
View > Column Browser > Use Album Artists.
Both can have an effect on the way iTunes displays tracks even when you use the Grid or Coverflow views.

  • Missing artists name

After I downloaded songs from a cd it didn't show the artist or the song name. It just showed track #.
    PLEASE HELP!!!

If you are referring to iTunes not showing artist/album/track info, you must be connected to the internet in order for iTunes to access the Gracenote CD Data Base where all this info is stored.

  • Harddrive Crashed-One artist missing from purchased...

My harddrive crashed recently and I had to replace it. When I went to get back my purchased songs from iTunes, all of them were there except for the songs of one artist (Utada Hikaru). I had 5 songs from her and none of them were found and when I go to "check for purchases" it says I have all the songs associated with this account (and I only have one).
I bought these songs from the US iTunes so I don't understand why those are the only ones missing. Does anyone know?

Just a thought. Are the songs of the 'missing artists' marked as 'Part of a compilation'?
You will find the checkbox when Getting Info (command-I) of one of the songs (Info tab).
Artists whose albums are marked as part of a compilation do not show up in the iTunes browser. Their albums will show up when you select Compilations (left part of the browser pane, below 'All (xxx Artists)').

  • Having synced my ipod, there are certain artists missing from the list on the ipod, but the tracks are there under the songs list.  Any reason why and how do i correct this.  Thanks.

Having synced my ipod, there are certain artists missing from the list on the ipod, but the tracks are there under the songs list.  Any reason why and how do i correct this.  Thanks.

We'll assume for now, that all the songs and albums in your iTunes Library are correctly labelled (dangerous assumption, by the way!), and that a Compilation album is one with songs by different artists. Unfortunately, the music industry (bless their little cotton socks!) often mark an album by one artist, that has a collection of their songs from old albums, as a compilation! iTunes doesn't think it is!
The missing artists will be those who only appear on Compilation albums. For example, if you have one song by Fleetwood Mac in your Library, and it's on a multi-artist Compilation album, then Fleetwood Mac will not be listed in the Artists menu. But, if you then import a Fleetwood Mac album (or even a Fleetwood Mac single) into your Library, then not only will Fleetwood Mac appear under Artists, but the song by them in the Compilation album will also be listed.
One way to sort this out is to remove the Compilations option from the Main Menu and the Music Menu on your iPod. To do this, go to Settings/Main Menu/Compilations and press the Select (centre) button to turn off the tick. Then repeat this in the Settings/Music Menu/Compilations.
You should now find the missing artists listed in the Artists menu.
By the way, I now routinely check all albums I import from CD into my iTunes Library. Before I start the import procedure, I make sure that Compilation CD is turned on (highlight the album in the import window and right-click/Compilation CD) if it really is a multi-artist CD - and off if it's a single artist CD. Once imported, I manually change the album info to; (highlight album and select ) File/Get Info/Info/Album Artist has "Various Artists" in the box. Make sure it's the Album Artist box, not the Artist box.

  • Artists & photos missing?

I have music that I know is on my Nano, but there is no listing for the artist. The album titles show up, but not the artist names in the artist list. They were listed under artist name on my Nano previously, and now they're gone. My photos seem to be gone, too.
I have not deleted anything from iTunes, and when I connect my nano, in itunes, it shows these "missing" artists as being on my ipod.

I figured the problem out. What happened was, the two missing artist names were filed under compilations, for some reason. I highlighted the entire album in itunes & turned the "part of a compilation" option to "no."
Also, if anyone else has this problem, it might help to go into "settings" on your ipod, and make sure the compilations option is switched to off.
I still never figured out why my photos disappeared and then reappeared.

  • Bad bug with ID3 tags of different case for same artist

My itunes files and music library are on a different drive than my boot drive. It is an internal drive (always on) in my Mac Pro at /Volumes/Media1/iTunes with music library at /Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music. iTunes is setup to automatically keep it organized and copy files to the media folder when adding. It has been this way for years, never a problem.
Just recently, and I think this may have coincided (but I'm not sure) with a 10.6.5 Snow Leopard update, my music started disappearing! The entries were still in the library, but with the missing exclamation mark in itunes with it reporting that it couldn't find the files. But only certain artists. After searching my computer, I found the missing files it at the same path, but on my boot drive, at /Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music/<missing artist>!
Trying to add these files back to my library would work briefly, but then they would magically disappear out of /Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music and go back to /Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music/
I figured out the one thing the different artists that had this behavior had in common - some of the ID3 tags for the same artist, which are the basis for organization, were in different cases. I think there is a weird case sensitivity bug that is breaking things. When I add back only those songs for an artist with ID3 tags for the artist of the same case, the behaviour stops.
I'm posting less looking for an answer and more to raise visibility and hope this gets a fix.
Example entries from my iTunes Library.xml, notice how the 'k' in OutKast is a different case in the entries.
    <key>Artist</key><string>OutKast</string>
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/OutKast/Speakerboxxx,%20Th e%20Love%20Below%20(Disc%202)/13%20Pink%20&%20Blue.mp3</string>
    <key>Artist</key><string>Outkast</string>
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Outkast/Aquemini/12%20Spot tieOttieDopaliscious.mp3</string>

I'd like to note that I'm experiencing the exact same issue. I'd add to this but petegas4life has it spot on. I'm just replying in hopes this thread gets noticed so the engineers at apple can look into this and hopefully fix it in the next release.
Reproducing the problem is pretty simple too. Just take one song from an album and change the case of the artist name. You'll see the music move to the boot drive and all of the songs from that artist won't work in itunes anymore. And if you're relying on iTunes to edit the tags, fixing the files is a PAIN because they keep disappearing on you.
