Missing character palette

Hi all,
I am trying to find a symbol "S" with "-" on top of it, but I could not find it in the character palette. As a matter of fact, I want to know if there is a way to put "-" on top of any letter i.e. the opposite of "underline". Can someone help? Thank you.

You have to type "S" or "s" and then go to the Character palette and find the Overline diacritic under the category "Diacritics", "European scripts". Here are examples your can copy/paste : ̅S̄ S̅ s̄ s̅ (short or long overline may have different meaning in different alphabets, or in mathematics).

Missing character palette after reinstallation of AI CS 11. My desktop computer crashed and I installed the program on my laptop which is running WINDOWS VISTA. The character/paragraph palette is missing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, but I already tried that. Doesn't work. There is a problem when you reinstall AI that this happens. The typical fixes for earlier versions of deleting the AIprefs folder don't work as AI changed after AI 10 and the prefs are spread out. I appreciate your reply, though.

Character palette flashes blank window

When I try to use the Character Palette by pulling down the "flag" menu, a blank window appears and randomly flashes.
I tried trashing the com.apple.IntlDataCache files in the System/Library/Caches folder, but that didn't solve the problem.
I also reinstalled Leopard. The problem is still there. (I have not installed the updates, yet.)
What now, Coach?

Character palette

My 'character palette' will not work with 'Appleworks' files although it does work with 'Mail'.
I upgraded from Panther to Tiger OSX six months ago. Have I missed a 'Preference' panel?

The main characters I need are the fractions and the degrees centigrade sign.
Try Option/alt + shift + 8 for degrees.
Fractions are not possible without a special font because AW is so old.
Use TextEdit instead and you can do everything from Character Palette

Customize (shorten) list of languages in Character palette?

I often have to change the language for short text sections in a paragraph. I work with five languages, but of course, the language drop-down menu in InDesign’s Character palette shows all languages. I would like to reduce this menu to just the languages I need on a daily basis (e.g. English: USA, German and French).
I thought that “Edit” > “Menus” might help, but unless I missed something, it won’t.
So would I really have to remove all (Hunspell) dictionaries for the languages I don’t need? In InDesign CC on OS X, this is a 156 MB “bundle” (AdobeHunspellPlugin.bundle). Going in there, physically removing all language folders and editing the plist file as described in http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/add_cs_dictionaries.html#id_69116 seems a bit… brutal. Is there a more flexible approach?

Can't find character in character palette or in Font Book

I have used the Om symbol (Sanskrit symbol used in lots of spiritual stuff - looks like "30") in a couple of documents in the past but when I open them now the Om symbol is missing and I can't find it in the Character Palette or anywhere in Font Book. The docs were created and used under previous OS. I don't actually remember if it was in Char Palette in earlier OS's but if anyone knows where I can find it for Leopard I'd really appreciate it. Here's one way. Copy/paste the OM from this webpage into TextEdit. Select the OM in TextEdit. In Character Palette go to the gear wheel at bottom left and click and select "Show Character Selected in Application."

No character palette, no keyboard viewer

In System Preferences >International > Input Menu, character palette and keyboard viewer seem to be totally missing! I cannot check them, and cannot make them appear in the menu bar. Has anyone else encountered this? Does anyone have a solution?

Character palette in CS6 flaw!

This is bad news. When I select a font onscreen and open the character palette, then click on the font drop down, it is not automatically bringing up the selected font...meaning, it just begins at the very top of the list with 'A'. So...if it is something in the Helvetica family that I want to change to, say, Helvetica Neue, or what have you, I need to scroll all the way down my enormous font list over & over again. God forbid it be a font under 'T'.
Is there any way to correct this issue, or has CS6 just not up to it?!

It is nothing to do with Number of Recent Fonts to Display set to '0'. As someone else mentioned, perhaps setting this to a very high number may help out a bit.
The problem is when I select my font in the character palette, click the drop down to reveal my entire list of fonts - the list does not auto jump to the font I am currently using.
It brings me up to the very top of the list at 'A', so I have to manually scroll down every time through the entire alphabet.
As you know many font families have completely different fonts to display THIN, SEMIBOLD, or what have you, vs. the different attributes of that family come up in the field below the font name (in the character palette). This is really frustrating as even if I attempt to manually type in the name, many times it won't jump to that font in the list due to shortened / abbreviated name.
It's a real headache and in Illustrator even more so as Illustrator doesn't seem to have the scroll option available. Meaning, you need to click the arrow icon and wait for it to scroll all the way down the list.
Any other ideas or preferences that can be changed?

Bug Report: Character Palette Does Not Update When Placing Text Cursor

Steps to reproduce:
Create some text and make it 12px in size
Create another block of text and make it 24px in size
When you place the text cursor back onto the first block of text the character palette still reads 24px
if you then drag the cursor over the text to highlight multiple characters THEN the font size changes to 12px
Expected results:
in 3, above, when you click on text using the text tool the character palette should immediately be updated with the font size of the text selected.

Character palette no longer works for me with Leopard

I need to use the Character Palette frequently in my work, but since going to 10.5 it is not working. Only the bottom part appears, starting with the "View" drop-down menu, and under that the large character on the left and the "Related" scroll box next to it. Therefore, I can't select any other characters from the categories that should be at the top of the CP (or were in 10.4), and I'm stuck with whatever happens to appear in the large character box. How can I get the whole CP back?

For some unknown reason the international data caches can get corrupted and prevent character palette and keyboard viewer to appear in the input tab of the international preference pane. This also prevent from working the special characters item in the edit menu of many applications, including the Finder, Safari and Text Edit.
If this happened to you, go to System/Library/Caches folder and trash the following files (don't worry, they will be re-created when you restart your Mac):
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
As you are attempting to cancel files from System folder, you will be asked for an administrator ID and password.
If you don't have an administrator ID and password, ask the system manager in your office.
After you insert an administrator ID and password, the files will be trashed.
Restart your Mac.
Open System Prefererences (in the apple menu, or inside the main Applications folder), open the International pane, and click the input menu. You will find again the character palette and keyboard viewer items with their chechboxes.
Click the two checkboxes. Be sure to click also at the bottom of the pane the checkbox labeled show the keyboard menu in the menu bar.
Exit System Preferences.
In the right side of the menu bar you will find a menulet with your nation's flag. Click the flag and you will find both character palette and keyboard viewer.
Also, the special characters item in the edit menu of the applications that have this item will work as expected, and will open the characters palette.

Illustrator 12.0 -- Fonts will not appear in character palette.

I recently had to reformat my computer, and had to re-install Adobe Illustrator. Ever since fonts will not load in my character palette.
The only way for me to access fonts is by going to type >> font at the top of the program. I've tried re-installing Illustrator, but have had no luck.
Any ideas on how to correct this problem? It didn't exist before, and fonts load correctly in Photoshop.

Move the folder. Sometimes the preferences are wrong from the beginning.

Character palette window malfunction

In trying to sort out a problem I was having with non-English fonts, I went to the Help Viewer and thought I had a lead with the Special Characters selection under the Edit menu. I opened the Special Characters window and found a variety of non-English fonts (I was specially interested in Hebrew). The instructions said to open an application and select the charachter. I opened Textedit and made an attempt which did not work that I could tell. What it did do, was cause the Character Palette window to malfunction. It flashes partially open on an irregular but frequent basis, perhaps connected to program activity. The window appears in the middle of the screen, it is titled and has the litlle rotating activity icon in the middle but is blank otherwise. It remains for less than a second and then disappears. When I look at it with the Console utility, it gives this sort of message:

Fully understand the frustration
Open "Activity Monitor" in /Applications/Utilities/
On the panel you will see all of the programs in memory
scroll down and one click on "ChaPaletteServer" it will highlight
click on "Quit Process" at the top of the screen
that should clear it
To use another language I select it in System Preferences > International > Input Menu
enable "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer"
at the bottom of the pane
enable "Allow a different input source for each document"
and "Show input menu in menu bar"
Open Textedit
click on the flag icon on the menu bar
select "Show keyboard viewer"
select the language
and away you go - the keyboard viewer shows the characters as available on your keyboard
You can access the International Prefs from the icon as well so if you want to deselect a language you can but change back to English (if that's you normal language) before doing so

Keyboard, power, and character palette issues

I have a brand new macbook (about 3 weeks old) that came with leopard pre-installed. I am continually having problems with the laptop not recovering from sleep mode and the keyboard will spontaneously stop working periodically. As well, the special character palette does not work - it doesn't come up at all! I tried resetting my PRAM to resolve the power/keyboard issues to no avail, and I have heard that an os reinstall may resolve the character palette issues, but am wary. Has anyone successfully resolved these issues?

Character Palette no longer works properly

I use the character palette frequently and it worked beautifully in 10.4.4, especially in Keynote. Now I can not use Math symbols unless I select the symbol font. Before the symbol would appear when I double clicked it in the palette window regardless of which font was selected. Further, Keynote presentations I had created under system 10.4.4 were changed so that the characters I had selected previously are gone. Now I have to reenter every character and that means undoing the build that is associated with the line in the slide. Is there a fix for this? Is this a quirk of the latest upgrade to 10.4.5? Any help to salvage hours of work will be greatly appreciated.

I noticed the first time that the character for "proportional to" would not work. Also the Boolean algebra symbols do not work. Only the Capitol Pi and Sigma and integral signs work. The triple equal sign, congruency sign, and nearly equal character do not come through. They did in the past. It is possible that these characters were automatically converted to Apple Symbol or gothic without my being aware of it. I did not check when they were used in the past.
I do not know what caused the loss, but suspect it is somehow part of the new system update. If I can use Apple Gothic or Apple symbol fonts for the symbols I need then I will adapt and use them. On the other hand if I have some kind of error in the code in my system or the application I need to know it.
I would prefer to be able to use the character palette directly as in the past, but perhaps that is wishful thinking.
I did reload Keynote 3 and it made no difference. I am loathe to reload the system and revert back if it can be avoided. thank you for your input thus far, it has helped me sort out what is going on.

Favorite glyphs in Character Palette

In Panther, I was able to put frequently used special glyphs like © into the Favorites panel of Character Palette so that I did not have to hunt for them all over Unicode space. In Tiger, the Favorites panel still shows up in Character Palette, but there seems to be no way of adding anything to it. The "Add to Favorites" button at the bottom of Character Palette in Panther has been replaced by a Spotlight query field. So what's the deal here? This is very un-Apple.
