Missing edges!!

I have connected my G4 FW800 to my TV. The edges of the desktop, top bottom, left, and right are not there. I looked for settings on my TV to fix this but couldn't find anything. I have it connected with a DVI to HDMI cable using the stock graphics card. The picture is horribly blurry. Would a better graphics card make for a better picture and is this why my desktop is chopped off.

You are a victim of Overscan. With early TV (vacuum tubes), the picture would shrink with voltage changes, temperature changes, or component aging. To keep the screen filled, the sets were setup with the picture larger than the screen, to allow for shrinkage. This is not need so much with modern sets, and not at all with digital (plasma, LDC) screens. The tradition continues, though. Part of it is to avoid showing bad edges of the picture caused by studio recording equipment. Part of it is sales. The set may sell better if things look bigger on the screen. The customer can't see what has gone off the edge.
If the set has no settings to reduce overscan, look in "Displays" system preference. Depending on the graphics board and OSX version, there nay be a checkbox for Overscan. If not, there may be height and width adjustments on the TV (but you may need a service manual to adjust width).
What is the native resolution of the TV? If the computer setting doesn't match, there will be blurring. A standard TV will only give 640 x 480, which is too low for computer use.

  • Why do some thumbnails have "ragged" edges?

In Ap 3.4.1 some of my thumbnails acquired "torn" ends, as though cut with a tailor's pinking shears. In addition, the thumbnail doesn't show the whole pic.
I've tried re-generating the thumbnail, and preview, but nothing changes.
When I switch to split view, or full screen the whole pic is there…but I'd like to know what's causing the odd thumbnail effect.

Your images probably have a panoramic aspect ratio. Then Aperture will clip the sides to make them fit  and indicates the missing edges by the ragged pattern.

  • PCIe-6321 counter failing at high frequency

I'm trying to use the counter on the 6321 as a frequency divider that takes an 80 MHz sin wave input and generates a 10 MHz square wave output by digitizing the output of a 50 ohm device on PFI0.  The specifications to for my board list a counter "Max Source Frequency" of 100 MHz, leading me to believe that 80 MHz should be possible.  However, in my experimenting while the counter based divider works very well at lower frequencies, it fails at about 35 MHz by missing edges.  The result is an  unstable output frequency that bounces between 8:1 division, 9:1, 10:1... depending on how many  edges are missed.
To explore this problem further, I swapped out my 2 meter 68-pin VHDCI for a 1 meter and plugged my function generator into the break out board with a < 30 cm cable, thinking that perhaps impedance mismatch was an issue.  However, even with < 1.5 m,  the device still works at 30 MHz and fails at 35 MHz.  This suggests to me that impedance mismatch is not the problem, as the maximum frequency was unchanged even though the cable length was nearly halved.
Is there something else I'm missing?  Is there a faster interface than PFI?  Or someway to 50 ohm terminate the device?

I see what you mean, but I guarantee you can't pass a 100 MHz signal through the X Series PFI lines.  ~25 MHz is what the bandwidth of the protection circuit is specified for (it's mentioned in this KB for instance).  I'm not sure offhand about the RTSI lines though (it might be worth an experiment as the bandwidth doesn't seem to be specified anywhere, but I wouldn't be too optimistic).
As for other NI hardware, the 6602 can take an external source up to 80 MHz on its PFI lines assuming the input signal is a clean square wave at TTL voltage levels (I've actually pushed this up to 100 MHz in the past, but your results may vary).  It is programmed in DAQmx like the 6321.
Or you could just implement this with an external circuit (e.g. comparator + ICS542).

  • Color crops my footage.

How do I stop color cropping my footage? I'm working on 1080P DVC Pro HD footage in Final Cut (Pal) and when I send it to color it automatically trims off the sides of my footage.
I've searched the manual and the web for a solution but can't find one.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
The footage is 25 frames per second if that helps.
my first port of call was to the project settings. I have it set to 1920 * 1080 HD.
I've tried all the other options and they are all worse.
I've played around in the Geometry room as well, but the missing edges don't seem to exist inside color.
Maybe the problem is coming from Final Cut? I'm using the send feature as the programs are on the same computer.
The original footage was 16:9 aspect ratio. In Final Cut I put a matte on to make it 2.35:1 (Obviously without "baking" it I wasn't expecting the matte to go across, I was just going to redo it.)
But a good part of the width is disappearing.
One thing I have just noticed which is starnge, is that once the footage is re-imported to FCP, although the footage is still too slim, if I check the "drop shadow" box in the motion control panel, more of the image will appear although it's distorted.
    Confused...

  • RIO - Channel to channel skew

This has been a difficult query to answer through my usual routes, so I'm hoping this finds a domain expert in the likes of Spex or similar.
I use a lot of R series and RIO devices for test and measurement systems. Mostly, the requirements for these are in the analogue domain, with relatively low speed requirements (10, 20 MHz) in the digital domain. My current favourite device is the sbRIO 9636, which is perfect for my sort of industrial processes - I can integrate it into a rackmount system without worrying about bulky cables, and usually it's able to do most of what I'm hoping it can.
I have a new process coming up which will require a greater channel count in order to accommodate analogue and digital DUTs. In addition, the digital clocked outputs it will have to measure will be more like 50 MHz max. Because I'd like to stick to the sbRIO if I can, my ideal solution would be similar to a 9626 with a 9693 with additional C-Series modules, but with access to additional DIO on the RMC. And yes, I'm aware of what that system will look like (without the need for a custom RMC ) I'm pretty sure that even at RMC digital inputs, I can probably get to 44 MHz (with no headroom for Nyquist, which isn't so much of a problem). I know RIO devices often quote 80 MHz as the input speed, but I'm also aware that most advice seems to suggest applications beyond 5 to 10 MHz carefully consider timing.
Previously, I discounted using a cRIO with 9403s for the high speed digital because of uncertainty over the channel-to-channel skew and propagation between the input pin and the FPGA. If I could be guaranteed a fixed latency between pin to FPGA with a finite but small skew, I would be comfortable with that, as I care most about missing edges and synchronisation between mutiple inputs from the same device. These days, especially with the newer Zynq chassis making them more attractive, it's worth revisiting...but still those questions remain about channel-to-channel skew.
For what it's worth, PCI/PCIe devices are out due to a compatibility issue with other hardware. USB devices are out due to a lack of robustness within my test environment (whether due to lack of strain relief on most USB connections or because Windows likes killing USB devices from time to time). I can't justify moving to FlexRIO due to cost either. With access to a variety of R series and RIO devices, I know I can benchmark some of this, but it'd be nice to hear from someone vaguely in the know.
So, after a long ramble, my questions:
    1. What's the channel-to-channel skew like on board level IDC DIO for sbRIO devices (4x on 9626, 28 on 9636)?
    2. What's the channel-to-channel skew like on C-Series modules through an RMC (e.g. a 9403 connected to a 9693)?
    3. What's the channel-to-channel skew like on C-Series modules through a cRIO chassis (e.g. a 9403 through a 9068)?
    4. Are there any other options I'm missing?
I'd be happy to explain more about my process requirements away from the fora, if helpful.

Whoops, had meant to use 9402 rather than 9403!
Propagation delay is usually the latency between input pin to FPGA. If this is constant, this isn't a particular problem for edge counting / quadrature decoding - I just know that when my FPGA registers inputs as being high on A and low on B, that was what they were some time ago. In the case of the 9402, the spec is 17 ns typical, 55 ns max (although I've also seen 50 ns somewhere). This might be an issue if you're trying to synchronise with some other process, such as a high speed analogue measurement, but if it's constant you can account for the phase introduced.
You should find, if you shove a 9402 or 9403 into a cRIO, that you can get in acquiring data at frequencies higher than 1/55n or 1/7u respectively - just that if you had an accurate way of measuring, you'd see level changes on those channels at some delay from the pin on the front of the module seeing a change.
What's more important for quadrature decoding is that the channel-to-channel skew for a device is short, typically of the order of nanoseconds. If you look at a typical line receiver, like the Texas Instruments SN65LBC175A or the Maxim MAX3095 etc, you'll notice their channel-to-channel and device-to-device skews are indicated. For an encoder measurement, this affects the maximum frequency you can count edges for. I know I can use one quad SN65LBC175A RS-485 receiver to receive four channels to within 1 ns of each other, and I can use a second and it will be within 2 ns of the other device. The propagation errors are an order of magnitude greater, but in the main this isn't an issue for most people trying to just count edges as per a counter application.
    So...
    - Propagation delays don't stop you sampling faster (I believe a 9402 can be driven to 80 MHz, as can a 9403)
    - A constant propagation delay for a single device is acceptable, as I can usually adjust for the phase that this introduces if I really care about it
    - Channel-to-channel skew is the main limiting factor for measurements of count edges...but this isn't routinely published data for C-series modules or RIO devices
If I could do everything straight into an RMC-mounted DIO or straight into the board level IO on an sbRIO, I'd probably be happy, but it would still be nice to know what the channel-to-channel skew is! As I've said, there's always the option of benchmarking any of the R-series/RIO combinations I own myself...but it would be nice to find the answer on a spec sheet somewhere.
I've opened a SR before and not really received much in the way of an answer, but short of spamming certain members of the FPGA team on the forum I don't know if it's answerable at all?

  • FPGA to HOST DMA

I am trying to record rising edge timestamps of a digital signal input to a spreadsheet using a CRIO. I have been getting some bad data elements recorded (although there are periods without faults). This is perhaps the input signal but i would be greatful if someone could check my VI's for any obvious mistakes.
I would also like to do the same with another input signal. Should i use 2 FIFOs, as below?
    Many Thanks
    Erny

    ern,
    Here are some thoughts.
Make sure that your FIFO type is Target to Host - DMA.  If you use more than one, make sure that the DMA Channel is unique for each (0 and 1 for instance).  Check the depth to make sure that you are not running out of space in the FIFO.  Your FPGA code looks ok to me.
In the GUI, you are specifying to read 1023 elements at a time.  Is your FIFO this same size?  This means that you will most likely always miss edges as the GUI will not read out the data until 1023 data points are present.  You are trying to stream edge timestamp information to the GUI so you have to stay ahead of the FPGA or you will miss data.  You could code your GUI so that you use a shift register to pass the number of Elements Remaining back as an input to the read operation as the Number of Elements to read.  You could seed the shift register with a value of 500 (or something like that) as the initial read.  You would also have to make sure that if the number of elements remaining was too small (or zero) that you set it to some minimum or you may read data out one point at a time depending on your edge rate.
In you GUI loop, you are writing to a file too.  You might want to use a producer consumer type architecture to read in the data.  One thread would read out the fifo as you currently have.  A second thread would write the data to a file.  You would pass data from the fifo thread to the file writer thread with a queue.
    Hope this helps!

  • N96 and wallpapers.

When I add a picture from my gallery as a wallpaper it just plonks the photo on the main screen with no re sizing at all. I'm missing edges on my photo's as wallpapers
    How can I stop this?

Re-size it to 240x235, thats what i used to re-size my walls on my N95 to, the N96 can't be that far out.

  • Pen Tool Path Prediction Missing (Show Edges doesn't fix it)

    Hi all,
I just encountered a problem with Illustrator's pen tool that I don't know how to fix. As I am drawing a path, the path prediction is missing. Normally the path connects from your last point to your cursor and you can calculate where you want to place your next point.
Show edges does not solve the problem. Show edges is currently activated and the path prediction isn't visible.
Does anyone know how to fix this? A Google search didn't do me any good.
    Thanks,
    J

Monika Gause, Thanks for the suggestion. I am however on CC and do not see an option for rubberband. Any other ideas? This problem slows my work flow down drastically and is incredibly frustrating.

  • A3 missing feature: calibration of paper edges for borderless printing

This question was posted elsewhere by someone else, but never answered, so I'm trying again...
In A2 it was possible to print a "calibration" sheet from within the print dialogue box, and then enter numbers corresponding to visual alignment of the paper edges. This was necessary (for me at least, using Canon inkjet printers) to make accurate borderless prints (i.e. having no ink overrun or undesired borders) by taking into account printer specific paper alignment variations. I searched everywhere for this in A3 and could not find it, so I guess the feature was removed?
    Does anyone know a workaround?

It could be; photo paper tends to be thicker and/or may have a slight curl to it that's catching the print head as it goes by.
Still, most people with photo-capable printers do tend to print borderless, so if it were a widespread issue I think the topic would be more common here.

  • My new ipodtouch 4.3.2 does not show the complete symbol bar at top and bottom, the whole page is shifted to one side -edges of keyboard missing so I cannot type .gadget is 1 mo old, fine till now...

hi- my new ipodtouch -screen is hiding part of each page-so it is hard to type,as the outermost symbols of the keyboard are missing.RESTORE and RESET have not helped.what trick can I use to bring the WHOLE page into view?Zooming in-out does not help--the edge of each page is out of view...
    Any helpful advice/thanks..

I sounds like you may have turn on the Zoom setting for accessibility.  Tap the screen with three fingers and it should go to normal.  Then go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn Zoom off.  You can also turn it of by connecting it to your computer and going to the Summary Pane and go to Universal Access and turn Zoom off.

  • 60i AVCHD footage transfer in with jagged edges.  What am I missing?

I'm logging and transfering in Final Cut Express.  The Canon C100 I just got uses AVCHD in the .mts files.  Express has no problem recognizing the card in my SD card reader.  I select AVCHD - Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 in the easy setup.  When I pull up Log and Transfer, all of the lines at an angle have those interlaced jaggy steps.  If I import and put the footage and drop it in my timeline, I don't have to render and the jaggies are still there.  Any options besides buying that $29 program that pops up on all the message boards when you google this problem?
    Thanks in advance...

You are seeing the interlacing because computer displays do not (cannot) present interlaced footage correctly. Interlaced video is designed to display correctly on TV monitors, not computer monitors.
Seeing the interlacing in FC is not in itself problematic, because if you make a DVD of the video it will display correctly on a TV monitor.
If it bothers you while viewing the timeline, set the Canvas scale to something other than 100% and FC will suppress a field in the display.

  • White macbook: upper case cracked at edges. Is replacement possible?

My Macbook has cracked casing edges at the front and sides. There is also some cracking at the top edges of the screen that I'm less worried about as it is not leaving anything exposed. It's well out of warranty with no Applecare, but I read on a US site (I'm in the UK) that Apple considered this a manufacturing defect and were offering a free replacement. I never received any notification of such a program. Can anyone clarify whether this was indeed the case, and if it was a time limited offer. If not, what are my options?
    Thanks

    Hi Fatjim,
It's been over a year since your post, so I hope you receive this query.
My daughter's white plastic MacBook -- about the same vintage as yours or a bit newer: Aug 2009 -- developed those well-known top case cracks about 2-1/2 years ago, within the 1-year warranty (I didn't even know about defects covered beyond that point). Was directed to a very good, nice, decent Apple support and repair store in NYC (which is a miracle, believe me!!!). No computer sales, just support. Very specialized and very personal. Completely different from other "authorized Apple" support stores in NYC. They replaced that one top piece quickly and for free. But perhaps a year later the top plate started developing new chips all over the place. I e-mailed Manny -- a terrific guy -- the person there who'd helped me before with both her Mac and mine, to ask about it, but got no reply. Maybe he missed it. E-mail is fallible. With a high schooler who "depends" on her Mac (social stuff as well), getting it out of her hands for any length of time is not easy, so I didn't pursue it further.
Now, it's 3-1/2 years old, but still functions perfectly well for all her needs and seems likely to for at least another year or more. (I know my MacBook Pro of the same vintage shows no sign of becoming "old" in any ways whatsoever.) But now her cracks, as with some other in this discussion, have extended further, and the entire frame around the screen -- directly around the screen and the entire top frame that holds the screen -- have cracks and breaks that really worry me functionally. (I have to press it down in the back after she closes it to get the top shell and bezel that hold the screen to snap back together at one, point, but there are holes, and yet new cracks forming!) I'm finally getting the courage to upgrade her machine from the Leopard OS it came with to the Snow Leopard disk that arrived with it, which I should have done immediately, but fear it will be for a machine that can't hold together. STILL...it does seem like a true manufacturing defect in all places. She's really a very careful kid.
Here in friendly NYC you'd be hard pressed to find any store that says "Apple" on it to actually do what they're supposed to do -- it's time spent on paperwork they could spend on something more profitable. Except, I hope, the one I used before, who has all our information, but has not seen me since 2010 or 2011.
My wife works for a well-heeled school that replaces all their harware every two years whether it needs it or not. To them, 2 years = out of date. But she gets her stuff for free. My daughter and I do not, and we really cannot afford to just replace the machine -- especially if it's working just fine, even with all the cracks and holes. (The economic recovery has not reached us, big surprise.)
YOUR success story caught my attention for this very reason, as did someone else's, here in the US, who mentioned a five-year period for cracked plastic on these things. So I want to clarify what you or anyone else has done.
You say you contacted Applecare. Is that right? What/who exactly is that? Who/what number do you call or what web site do you go to to find folks there who are truly helpful?
Do you need a special Applecare contract that we would have had to buy at the time the Mac was bought?
It really sounds like calling someone at the right # at Apple (esp. with their current Congressional tax problems!) might give me a "number" of some sort that I could just bring to Manny, or whoever is there, when my kid goes to camp and say:  "Here, they said to replace all this crappy plastic. Apple will pay."
Any advice or solid info from anyone would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry this was so lengthy -- putting it off so long just made it grow and grow.
    - Dave

  • Yahoo! Mail no longer loads emails and the ads are missing after having cleared Firefox's cookies, history, and cache.

Ironically, I made this support account just to ask this question and had to go to IE to verify.
Anyway, Yahoo! Mail use to work almost flawlessly before a couple days ago. Basically, the page loads like normal when I have a good connection except that the ads on the sides are missing, my profile picture is gone, the "fancy" rounded edges of the buttons are nonexistent, none of the menus work or open anything, and all of the links are useless. I have been searching for solutions for two hours now and none of them are relevant or useful:
    - Clear cookies = when I cleared cookies, cache and history is when the problem first started;
    - Disable Ghostery = I just learned about it today and so never installed it, but I also checked to make sure it wasn't there somehow;
    - Start in Safe Mode = the problem is still there and the only change was that it loaded the page faster;
    - Disable AVG = I can't because I can't find it anywhere...;
    - Disable Security/Change Permissions? = I think this was a suggested solution, but it already allows Yahoo! Mail to load images and set cookies while blocking pop-ups, location sharing, and installing themes/extensions;
    - Update Firefox = No. I like my old version. I keep hearing weird and annoying things about updated versions of Firefox, and I'm not going to risk losing everything else just to get Yahoo! Mail back
I started using Firefox (3.6.12) because IE was slow, but ever since I tried clearing the cache, cookies and history Firefox has been going slower. Oddly enough, all of my browsing history was not deleted because certain web pages (that I haven't accessed in ages) show up in the address bar when I go to type. Gmail works in Firefox despite saying my browser isn't supported, but Yahoo! never bothers me about my browsers and now its acting strange.
By the way, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but right before Yahoo! Mail took the usability train off a cliff, it reloaded (because clearing the cookies logged me out), then told me the internet connection was slow and that I can switch to Basic for better results. I decided to stick with Classic and then it "crashed".
Anyone help with this would be appreciated. One of the reasons I switched to FF is because Yahoo! Mail was faster on it, and I'd hate to have to go back to IE...
    Thanks in advance!

As it turns out, many others have been having similar issues on other browsers. It seems that maybe Yahoo! is taking a much longer time to load or something like that. Either way, its been working on and off all week, and the same issue even showed up yesterday with IE 8 instead of FF. It still loads faster than IE 8, but again is spotty. Some people think the issue may be with mail.yimg.com or s.yimg.com, which I could see was the loading url in the left corner whenever Yahoo! Mail was refusing to work. A couple of people said blocking it caused the issue. Alternatively, some people suggested blocking it to solve the problem. Does anyone have any information on that? Again, I have no add-ons that would be blocking any urls, and my firewall hasn't any records of it. I really don't want to do anything to mess up my browsers more than they may have already been. Thanks for all of your help so far!

  • Missing 3d tools in Photoshop CS6 extended

Hi everyone, I thought that I would seek help here before I endure the agony of Adobe technical help. I just installed the upgrade to CS6 Design and Web Premium yesterday. • What is missing from Photoshop CS6 ???

I tried the new PhotoShop CS6 (beta) but aside from some innovations of which my favorite is the interface (The interface is one of the best innovation that Adobe have made finally an interface that does not make you eyes hurt) and content aware move tool (content aware is definitely the best technology in Photoshop, may in the future in Photoshop CS20 will be voice-activated and will do exactly what you say even to draw for you) and maybe the new brushis, nothing that new, especially for those who draw in Photoshop concept artists, Ilustrators and so on ... etc
In my opinion what is missing from the famous Photoshop CS 6 and should have been is :
1 : Live symmetry drawing (horizontal and vertical) even the simplest programs like Alchemy / Sketchbook Pro and new Painter 12 has the function they have gone beyond the horizontal and vertical with the function of Kaleidoscope. I really like how the brush works in Alchemy especially in symmetry, in Sketchbook Pro are not so good in symmetry, unless thei are round but if you have a strange shapes thei tend to function as a parallel very strange but it is ther why the famous Photoshop does not have this function ??? I hoped that in PS CS6 (beta) to be, but no, I do hope maybe in the CS7 will be,
2: I would like to make several sets of brushes, but in different windows on the screen at the same time not only a big one something like Corel Painter 12
3: If you put a 3d function why do you tried to do something like the Google SketchUP fast, simple to use and easy to learn, or a simplified version of ZBrush sculpture in 3d clay ???
Ok now let's talk about Bridge CS6: same functions, nothing so new, I hope that in the cs6 to implement something like the function of ACDSee Photo Manager 12 for example:
Preview Thumbnails in a files, shortcuts that can be modified, such as double click I want to open fullscreen preview not send in photoshop or Camera Raw etc, why not the same as Photoshop, to make what I want to what I want, preview window to have the option of framing the image even if it is small or large (fit image, reduce or enlarge) the same for full screen mode the image will be framed by the edges of the screen (fit image height or widthand reduce or enlarge) from there if you want 100%, 200% etc. and many others
What is right, there are many other features that I like and love in Bridge much more than ACDSee 12 such as preview multiple images at the same time in preview window and Review Mode (one of my favorite) and many others but ...   ... What was more important to me I said maybe for someone else is something else missing ...

…Why on earth would you want to restrict Photoshop?…
Because I may consider it to be bloated already?
Because I don't need to be driving around in a motor home when my car fills my needs?
Because I don't need a hammer that doubles as a screwdriver or water-heater when I need to drive a nail?
Because a scalpel may be more useful for my purposes than a Swiss-army knife?
Because I would prefer the engineering team to work on refining existing features and improving stability rather than add features that are better served in drawing and painting applications?
Because I'm not particularly impressed by some of the new "features"?
Because I would prefer to see improvements to the History panel as have been suggested and requested over the years?
I could think of many more such reasons why.

…I suspect there are a great many features in existing versions of Photoshop that you don't use…
    Duh!    Precisely!
Software bloat adds to the cost of developing and maintaining an application, delays the release of bug fixes and genuine improvements of existing features and eventually demands greater hardware resources.
I have no clue as to what the he!! your "Prime Minister" quote is supposed to mean in the context of this discussion, unless you're implying that you feel like a 21-year-old whippersnapper who knows everything.  From your avatar picture you look younger than I am.  Besides, I know of very few "prime ministers" who are, were or have been particularly knowledgeable about "everything", so that may not even be a requirement for the job.
