Missing items in PDF export

Strangest thing started happening today. A fairly complicated document –lots of transparency effects– refuses to neither export anything more than the bottom layer objects NOR transfer anything else to Photoshop via copy/paste. Anything that is on top of something else is missing. I have to say I'm baffled.
This far CS5 has been very reliable when it comes to exporting PDF.
Anybody experienced anything like this?
My CS5 sits on a Mac Powerbook Pro.

I bet you think I've ignored you for the last few hours. Actually, I've been fighting with your file most of the day. First ID froze trying to update the link to the large elephant with the dark background, so I figured I'd force a r-write of all th elinns by opening in Photoshop and saving as tiff if they were .psd, and .psd if they ere tive, then doing another save as back to the original format. That solved the first freeze problem.
I have yet to successfully export a PDF, though, either in the background or the forground. I don't mean the PDF is missing stuff, I mean I can't even get a PDF to export. I reduced the resolution on the images to have 2/3 of the current effective resolution -- I think you would have more than you'd need for a display of this size even at 200 ppi effective, but still no luck. I'm trying a forground export at the moment, but it seems to be stalled again and the last time it gave me an out of memory error after about 15 minutes like this.
If this one fails I'm going to delete the complex vector stuff from the background. My gut feeling is that's what's overwhelming ID and placing an Illustrator gaphic might work better. (just got the failure).

  • Missing Logo in PDF export

    Hi all,
I have a problem with an InDesign document when writing PDFs of it:
When exporting a PDF with the built-in export option sometimes a logo (eps) is missing in the PDF output - here some more info:
    - the document is now CS 4/Mac, but it was edited in CS 4/Win before and originally it was built in CS 3/Mac
    - the logo eps is correctly connected - InDesign never showed a missing link, the eps' colors are the colors of the pdf output (CMYK)
    - the logo eps is working perfectly in other documents and even on an other page of the same document
    - the problematic logo is placed on a master/template page in this document - when creating new pages using this master page they seem to have the same problem
    - when exporting the PDF via .ps and Distiller it seems to work without problems
    - in some exported pdf the logo is visible in some it's missing
Anybody ideas? Solutions? My feeling is, that the document might be somehow corrupted. Is there a way to check the integrity of InDesign documents or is there a (software) solution to repair such documents?
    Many thanks in advance
    Daisy

Many thanks, unfortunately none of these ideas helped - i tried:
    - export to INX and to IDML and reimport in InDesign 4
    - placing the Logo as .ai
    - duplicating the master page and using this template
... without having the problem solved.
Then I removed all other elements on this page - and then surprisingly the logo now seems to work. What I removed from the page were some Indesign vector elements (an other Logo which had been placed via pasteboard from Illustrator and which did not seem to have any problems so far). Can this be the reason? Are there known problems with vector elements imported via pasteboard (maybe in combination with exporting the document between Mac and WIN or when upgrading a document from CS 3 to CS 4?)

  • Missing pages in PDF export

In Indesign CS4, when I export a 48 page document to PDF the last few pages are always missing. I've trying anything but I can't make it print the whole document.

I don't run Vista, so what I know is based on other posts, but the first thing to check is which folder did you install into? For Vista 64 it's important to install in the default location, which means most things should be in the (x86) Program files folder.
Next, can you EXPORT the file successfully, and are you printing, rather than exporting, for a particular reason?
Is it always the same number of pages missing? Is there anything common about the first page that's missing in the prints? Any .eps images? What about fonts?
What happens if you try exporting the document to .inx or .idml, then open those in ID and print to PDF?

  • Missing text after pdf export.

I am having problems exporting to PDF from Publisher 2007.
I am using Adobe professional 8, Publisher 2007 on Windows Vista 64.
The files are created and printed to PDF. When I take a look at the PDF there are blocks of text missing. If I re-export the file again, 9 times out of 10 the text will be missing. Periodically everything will work fine with the same document. In the most recent document I am using Helvetica 55 Roman 12pt. All the body text is identical (at least from what I can tell). This exact same document exports to PDF perfectly on a Windows XP SP2 machine using Adobe Professional 8 and Office 2007.
As far as I can tell, this only occurs in when exporting from Publisher, which leads me to believe that it is an MS problem but I have been unable to find any information about something Publisher specific.
Thanks in advance for any help. This is frustrating.
    Jason

    I spoke too soon.
    I exported (using the adobe add-in) 8 documents. The first 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 were fine. Numbers 4, 6, and 8 had problems.
All these documents were created from the same template. I did the first and all subsequent documents were created by duplicating pages and swapping text. The page numbers vary from 5 to 16. There is no apparent connection with page count as several of the larger ones exported perfectly.
I don't know if this information is relevant at all. I am hoping that it gives someone an indication of what might be causing this.
    Thanks again,
    Jason

  • Gis map legend missing on .pdf exporting

    Hi guys,
i've a big problem with the WAD exporting for printing.
I've a simple gis map template with legend visible.Template is running fine on internet explorer but when i try to print report (right clic on the map - printable version) in the output .pdf file the legend is missing.
I try everything: with ie print, with adobe pdf ie add-on, exporting in excel format but the map legend is always missing.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance.
    Andrea

    Hello Andrea,
you should check the properties for the map web item in your export template.
The content template is 0ANALYSIS_PATTERN_EXPORT for the print version.
There might be the "display legend" flag turned off.

  • Bug - PDF export missing brush strokes

Can anyone reproduce this apparent bug in FHMX?
    1. Apply a brushstroke to an object.
    2. Group with 'Transform As Unit' checked.
    3. Duplicate object several times. Scale some of the copies
    larger and some
    smaller.
    4. Export document to PDF.
Open exported PDF in Acrobat, Illustrator or Preview.
    Unexpected results:
All of the scaled copies of the object are missing from the

    Wow! Yes! Same here.
Any transforms done to an object after being grouped with
    'Transform As
Unit', are being ignored by the PDF Export.
This series of steps will produce the same problem described
    by Makate.
    1. Apply a brushstroke to an object.
    2. Duplicate object and move it to another location on page.
    3. Group the duplicate object with 'Transform As Unit' (TAU)
    checked. Then
    scale it larger.
    4. Export document to PDF.
    Unexpected results:
The duplicate object will be the same size as the original
    object.
This will happen not only with brush strokes but with
    ordinary strokes. PDF
Export is missing all transformations made after TAU is
    applied. If I
remember correctly, TAU, which has been in FH since very
    early versions, is
a kind of Postscript envelope. My theory is that because FH
    doesn't have a
Postscript interpreter, it's missing the Postsript
    transformations.
This limitation in PDF Export is very unfortunate because the
    default
preference setting in a new FH installation is "Groups
    transform as unit by
default". It is the logical way to preserve the appearance of
    artwork with
strokes, brush strokes and vector effects. New users could
    not possibly know
that this is one of the many limitations of PDF export. It's
    not listed in
the technote, but it may be the reason for 'missing objects'.

  • Is there a way to export individual page items as PDF or EPS?

I have a long document, all threaded, with a bunch of inline graphics. Many of the inline graphics have callouts and pointer lines. I take the graphics, callouts, and pointers, group them, and then cut and paste the group inline into the text flow. I want to be able to tag the graphic (complete with pointers and callouts) for an XML export. But I cannot tag a grouped object. I remember learning at the PeP conference in May that one way was to build the graphic with callouts in AI, and then place it into ID. But I already have an established workflow, with hundred of grouped inline objects in my ID docs.
So I was wondering if there is a script that will allow me to export individual page page items as PDF or EPS. I know that you can export page items as JPEG, but I don't want rasterized text. Please assist. Thanks.

  • CS3: PDF-Export Transparency Issue when Image-Links are missing

I have a Layout with a transparent Frame on the top most Layer. For this Workflow-Step I do not have access to the original Image-Links, so I guess that all I see are the embedded Preview-Pictures and InDesign reports that all Object-Links are missing.
If I export this Layout as JPG, the resulting JPG looks like the WYSIWYG in InDesign, which is suitable for this workflow-step. However when I export as pdf, the Frame is not transparent anymore. Instead it is filled with white color and covers the rest of the Layout. In Adobe Reader I can actually select the wrongly covered Picture at the border of the frame and copy&paste it somewhere and it looks fine.
When I provide the original Frame-Picture and repair the missing Link in InDesign, PDF-Export works fine.
I have installed & updated InDesign on a new Mac OS X 10.4.11, so all settings should be default.
Transparency Blend Space is set to CMYK. I tried all default PDF-Export Profiles and tried a lot of different settings in the pdf-export dialogue including different PDF-File-Versions, Simulate Overprint on/off, Color-Conversion disabled, disabling Picture-Compression and much more. I also tried to Print a PS-File and then use the Distiller: same result.
I use Adobe InDesign CS3 V 5.0.2 and tried Adobe Reader 8.1.2 and Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 to display.
    Any Ideas?

Transparency flattening REQUIRES having access to the high-resolution images to get good results. One of the slogans I teach printers is "Fatten before you flatten." Meaning, replace the low-res images with high-res images.

  • Characters missing in PDF export on Windows

I have a EPS logo placed in InDesign.
When I export to a PDF there are characters missing in the PDF:
When I check the PDF's fonts it lists them as using a custom encoding.
When my collegue uses the same logo in InDesign on a Mac, all the characters are included in the PDF and the fonts are listed as using ANSII encoding.
If we open the logo in Illustrator and export it as an EPS, it works properly on both platforms. However, since we typically place this type of logo via scripting, we would like to be able to either have a fix for the bug or be able to identify the what types of logo files causes this issue so can automatically check the logo before using it. Is this a known problem?

Hmm .. (HelveticaNeue was a likely candidate for the source of your problem if, and only if, the file was made on a Mac -- its system version of HN is a bit ... messed up ... by Apple.)
Just for clarity, can you check with what software this EPS was made? Open it with a regular text editor, that info should be somewhere in the first lines, usually in a line that starts with "%%Creator:".
If you drop the EPS file on Distiller, is the resulting PDF okay?

  • Pdf export artwork missing

    Hello illustrators.
im exporting a pdf from illustrator, and half of my artwork is missing!what can i have done wrong?
    thank you.

Well, I don't have an answer to the question, but I have been able to come up with a workaround that others might be interested in...
What I did was split the presentation into two pieces and generate PDFs from each piece. The (shorter) pieces both exported correctly. Then I used PDFLab (http://www.iconus.ch/fabien/index.html), a free PDF Utility, to put the two pieces back together. The result was a single PDF that contained the entire presentation.
In my mind, the fact that this workaround was successful suggests to me that there is a bug in the PDF Export code of Keynote (at least v4.0.4 — I haven't bought into iWork 09 yet).

  • PDF Export with fixed column widths ignores page break on Analysis item

    Hi experts,
we use the column width modification to define fixed column width in a analysis item. On the same Web template we want to export the whole template including the analysis item to PDF format. First of all everything worked properly, but the fixed widths have not been applied to the PDF. According to [SAP Support Note 1336188|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1336188] and additional explainations from [SDN Thread 1558536|Column Width Modification not working in Print Version; we solved the problem.
Unfortunately another problem arises. Our Analysis item delivers a big number of rows which extent multiple pages. By applying the export fix width parameter all page breaks are ignored, meaning that the analysis item is never shown completely in the PDF. We tried all parameter options of the Export Function without success. It seems that the EXPORT_FIX_WIDTH is just working for analysis items, which fit on one single page by length.
Any ideas how to solve this?

  • Find Missing Items - export list to spreadsheet?

I inherited a LabVIEW project that has a whole lot of missing items (vis, controls, lvlibs, etc...).  From the project I can display a list of the missing items, but I cannot figure out how to export the list to something useful for sorting and sharing.  Right clicking or trying to select multiple items in the list doesn't work.  Is there a way to do this?  I have attached a printscreen of the missing items window in case it helps...

Yes you generally can do this, but the technique changes with some versions of LabVIEW because it can be seen as a security risk.  But realistically it is more like extracting part of a binary application.  After extraction the VI has no documentation, no icon, and just works like a DLL with some inputs and you get some outputs with no way of seeing the code that goes on inside it.  It also cannot be recompiled for other versions of LabVIEW so again it isn't all that useful.

  • PDF exported from InDesign missing background when opened in Illustrator

Hello, I am having a bit of a frustrating problem.
I'm working on graphics for a large project, and I have to get some of my files from InDesign into Illustrator (they are both CS5) for our printer.
I would have normally designed them in Illustrator but ALL my graphics are in InDesign and we just found out once we started on production that he needs AI and needs our trim path set up for our irregular shapes.
For MOST of the documents, its been pretty easy (exporting to PDF > opening in illustrator and making a cut path > saving as AI) however I have this one file that is making me lose my mind.
When I export it as PDF, it opens perfectly and looks normal in acrobat, and I also check it out in preview as well. The background shows up and everything. However when I open the PDF in illustrator it completely loses the background. I noticed it doing this before for a couple graphics, but I assumed that was because they had gradients drop shadows and transparencies and all that. This file has nothing weird except for a gradient grey background.
Help? I'm including some screenshots of whats happening in the hopes that you guys can help solve it.
So here we have me saving it, then opening it in Acrobat to check stuff out.
Now here is what happens when I open it in Illustrator:

Hi, Brie. I have been running into this issue for quite some time now. I also received the same response as you did. "Stop opening exported PDFs in Illustrator." This is an unsatisfactory answer for someone that works in the large format print industry that needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue. The downfall with these workarounds: all spot colors located in the gradients will convert to CMYK mixes. I'm still researching to see if there is a way to keep spot colors intact in these areas.
A little back story: InDesign is converting the gradients into something called NChannel. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing info. Both InDesign and Acrobat have the ability to display these elements whereas Illustrator, from what I’m finding, does not. Which is why we’re seeing gradient elements drop out when opened in Illustrator.
    Workaround for CMYK Gradients
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: DeviceCMYK
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select DeviceCMYK in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 1 Spot Color in Gradients (Converts Spot Color located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: Spot Color
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the Spot that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 2 Spot Colors in Gradients (Converts Spot Colors located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the DeviceN spot color that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Please try this and let me know if you have any questions! I'm always looking for new problems to solve! Good luck!

  • Photoshop CS4 - Layers Missing in PDF Export

    Hi there,
I'm working on a leaflet design for a client in Photoshop CS4 and am having a real issue with the PDF export. There are three layer groups all containing the same graphics, but when I export these to PDF - whether compressed or uncompressed and I've tried Reader 5 - 8 compatibility and with varying settings the layers do not appear in the PDF.
They are visible as plain as day in Photoshop, but don't appear at all in the PDF.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated,
    Many thanks,

Thanks for your answer :-) I will try the gradually merging option first. I did flatten it but lost a LOT of quality in the PDF, which is not great when this has to go to the printer's.
My image doesn't have clipping paths (probably hard to believe) but does have an epic number of layers. Here are the offending layers - nothing complex at all. The layers that don't appear, simply are the three squares which are in the 'Logo Squares' layer group.
If this enlightens you at all please let me know and I'll get back to you again. Thanks for posting!
