Missing Music and Exturnal HDDs

Hey All,
Im new here but Id like some help (if there is any available)
you see Im having a problem with iTunes, and its one that i belive could be fixed without too much trouble on apples part, if there isnt a way to fix it already.
I seem to be wofferling soo Ill get to the point.
I sent this email to the support for iTunes the other week, and still havnt had a reply back so I thought Id ask you lovley people your thoughts.
heres the email.
"Dear Reader,
I over Christmas got an external Hard drive and a new laptop, and then imported all my songs into itunes from the external HDD, this worked and allowed me to sync my music to my ipod and Im able to listen to my music anywhere as long as my HDD is plugged in.
The problem comes in if I open iTunes without the HDD plugged in, I understand that the music will not be avalible as the file location will not be there.
However I would think that the next time I open iTunes, with my HDD plugged in, the software would scan for my HDD and the music locations and the music would be accesible again. I know of lots of other software which does this automaticly and works without any problems, however iTunes does not, and I find this to be a disadvantage to the software.
Why does that simple task need to be amplified into me having to delete all the music from my library and then spending half an hour re-importing it again?
As I am on the move a lot of the time this does very quickly become rather tedious.
I was hopping when this happened first time that, when I told iTunes of one of the files new-location it would automaticly find all of the missing files and link up again in a matter of seconds, however this doesnt seem to be the case.
Instead the software wants me to go though 7786 songs and find the files one at a time.
For a software that is meant to be easy to use I was hoping for better.
However it could be a very simple case of me missing a button when I right click or some thing in the controls window at the top.
So my only feedback is, I love the software and the updating uses, however it needs to have this auto find/ search feature on a mass bases if its to maintain my high opinion of the software.
Thank you for your time,
Jon"
I know its a lot but still I wonder if Im the only person to ether have this problem in which case there must be a way to fix it, or one of the few to point it out.
If for example Im working on a video in Sony vegas and some of the video/ music is on my external HDD, te software will ask me, just like iTunes, for a replacement directory. Now if i open it again, and it asks me the same thing, once Iv told it on one file it will automaticly find the others without further input from me, so why dosnt iTunes have this simple feature? or am I missing something?
Please let me know your thoughts and or solutions as soon as you can, as it seems that iTunes has whipped itself again and I need to re-import all my music again.
Jon,

I've never been able to get podcasts to sync automatically, either.
Hook up your iPhone.  Go into "Podcasts" on iTunes.  Drag each individual episode onto the listing for your iPhone.  (I'm assuming this works the same with iTunes for Mac as it does for the Windows version.)

  • Missing music and movies

The laptop and ipod touch where I stored my music and movies was stolen, is there any way to get that data back?

    From a backup disk?
You can re-download all iTunes purchases by signing into the iTunes Store, then selecting Purchases from the right-hand sidebar.

  • Missing music and money

i am tired of itunes. i recently recieved a new laptop and have loaded itunes onto it along with my account and when i loaded my account on my computer most of my purchased music was gone. i have partial albums left but thats it. i had the full wall album from pinkfloyd and now i only have 3 songs. i also had around 40 tv shows and now have around 10. my purchase history says i have purchased and downloaded everything but its not there. Also on my old computer i had a full 25 dollar gift card and now its gone. if any one can help me it would be greatly appreciated because im missing a lot of money through all these songs and videos.

When you buy a song from the iTunes Store, or any other online music download store for that matter, you receive one copy of the song downloaded to the computer from which you make the purchase. If you want to have the song on another computer, you need to copy it over. Simply logging on to your account from another computer does not move the music!
If you have access to the old computer, or the most recent backup that you made from it, use a flash drive or external hard drive to copy your library over to the new one.

  • Missing music and scanning...!

I recently downloaded a few songs from a website that I use regularly! But I can't find this song that I set as my ringtone anywhere on my phone! But it still works as my ringtone! Where is it? Or anyway I could search for it? Also on my media at the bottom of the screen it keeps saying scanning followed with ... I tried removing the memory card and switching of the phone but none of which makes any bit of difference!what is it doing and anyway I can stop it? Can anyone help me or suggest any ideas? Would be grateful

Go to your Media Icon > Menu > Explore and look in all the folders, especially Ringtones and Music.
For the Scanning issue, remove the battery and the Media Card again, reinsert both and let the device sit for about 10 minutes after rebooting with you do touching it.
Then look, is the "Scanning..." still active?

  • Missing music and books?

Recently all but one of my books in iBooks disappeared from my library.  Everything was backed up so I was able to restore it but last night I realized that all my music has disappeared as well.  I don't know for sure but suspect this happened at the same time which was Sunday.
In both cases my material is backed up so I'll be able to restore it but it is still disconcerting that something like this happened.  Does anybody know of such a problem and the cause?  The cure?
If it is a common problem is there a way to restore without manually dragging tracks back into the ipod?
    Thanks!

Well, yes. They're not completely lost, I know this. I have most of this material (songs and books) in my iTunes, and I can go and manually pick each one and add them again. But should this really be necessary? This way, I'll all the trouble of setting it up again, instead of just opening it how it last worked.
Although some files like pdfs that i saved either from an email, or saved from the web were located in iBooks and could be lost.
Recovering these files is only a part of the problem (which in most cases is easy to solve). The update erasing my whole music Library and bookshelf for no good reason is what bugs me and is a dissapointment with Apple.

  • Missing music and apps

    Hi,
I just bought a new 64Gb touch to replace my old one (16Gb). The problem I have is when I sync it doesn't find all my music in my library or add my apps to my new ipod. The only way I have been able to get some back is to double click on the exclamation mark next to the song and locate it in my library. This is really long and arduous. Can anyone help me out there?
    Cheers.

Was your backup copy of your computer stolen as well?
If not, then use this to put everything back.
You buy only one download of music/videos/movies.  You can try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception, but they are under no obligation to allow.
Just as when you get your cds stolen, you can claim the stolen music on your insurance.

  • Missing music and restoring it

i just lost most of my music on my itunes library. i dont know why! i tried to restore it from the my music folder on my computer and now i had ended up wit lots of duplicates of the same song. i have lost all my playlists and play counts of each song! i still have most of the stuff on my ipod but im afraid to connect it incase it deletes them as well.. please help!

1). If your iPod is set to update automatically you can use a keyboard command to prevent your it syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it until you can sort out your library: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you only want to copy your purchases to the computer that can be done using iTunes, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Missing Music and Music Videos...

I just had to replace my system HD last night. My entire itunes library is on an external HD. Once I got the new HD up and running and restored everything via my Time Machine back up, I noticed some of my purchased songs were gone and 3 recent Music Video purchases were also gone. I did a search for them all on my external drive and they were listed right there in my iTunes Music folder on that drive! Why are they not showing up when I open iTunes then? I had to manually drag the songs back over but I am having an issue getting the 3 music videos to show up. If I hook my iPod up will it delete them from my iPod?

...here I thought you had an answer to my post and you just asked a whole other question. Well to answer yours where is your music at currently? If you have your music backed up on CD's (should be like a XML file or something like that just open iTunes and click FILE then ADD TO LIBRARY or you can manually drag all your music over which would take forever.

  • How do I retrieve my music and apps after installing iOS5 on my ipod touch?

After 'backing up' my ipod, I was prompted to install iOS5 onto my ipod. I then proceeded to install. I knew iit would take some time to install new OS, so I let it be. After about an hour or so I came back to check on my ipod, low and behold, it had none of my music and apps. I still don't understand what my feelings are right now. But I suspect that tomorrow I will be devastated if I cant get my music back. I dont have half of this stuff on my computers. Did I somehow back up 'all' my music somewhere? I don't know. I just spent a half hour waiting for Apple Support with no answer, waiting on my cell phone no less, to answer my inquiry about my missing music and apps but couldn't wait anymore. Does anyone know what the resolution is? Is all my music gone?
Anyways any help would be great.
Will be searching for info on the forums.

Ok so apps can be restored by going to update apps in ipod. individually, but restored nonetheless. My music on the other hand...

  • Itunes:  i want to find a single fix for missing music on itunes rather than using "iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads" on a case by case basis.

recently when i was creating a playlist, i realized that i was missing music from my extensive itunes (12.0.1.26) library.  i found the solution "itunes:  finding lost media and downloads" and used the general approach to find the music in finder and copy it to itunes.  i don't want to do this every time i find i am missing music.  is there an automated fix?  i want apple to develop a way to automate the fix.  can it be that this isn't a problem for many people?
i ask this now because i just looked for music i thought i had but can't find.  maybe i am wrong about having the artist, but it has happened on another artist too.  i can't trust itunes to tell me whether i have a song or not.  i don't want to keep going back to finder, especially when the instructions in "itunes:  finding lost media and downloads" doesn't actually reflect my system (os x 10.7.5).
i don't want to try to do a restore.  i have never done a restore on my mac (previously a pc user).  and, i don't know how far back to take the restore to find the old music.  and then music i have added since i lost the old music wouldn't be there.
i understand that there are so many system variables that apple would need to take into consideration with a general fix.  but:  i am assuming that apple's changes have caused my problem and feel that apple should do something to fix it.  perhaps my assumption is incorrect.
    thank you for your help.

limnos, i always have backups.  the problem is that i don't know how far back in time to take a restore because i don't know how long this has been going on.  and, if i take the restore back very far, i will lose what has been added since the music started to disappear.
i don't even know what you mean when you say "you will check there aren't any broken links (use a script from the Dougscripts web site) before you do a backup."
i agree with you to some extent about not automatically installing upgrades.  i'm still running lion and was pushed to it from snow leopard.  the problem is that i have a hard time envisioning the changes described in an update to judge whether something is valuable or not.
i have questions about your last paragraph.  i'm going to repeat it here and then insert my questions as i go.  please forgive my all caps for the moment:
"Now for your missing music, is it that there are broken links, or are things missing completely from the library?" I DON'T KNOW ENOUGH TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION.  I BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH BROKEN LINKS.  WHEN I COULDN'T FIND THE MUSIC THAT I THOUGHT I HAD LOADED INTO ITUNES YEARS AGO, I FOUND THE CD'S AND IMPORTED THEM TO ITUNES.  I GOT A MESSAGE ABOUT SOME OF THE TRACKS BEING DUPLICATES THAT ASKED WHETHER I WANTED TO IGNORE OR IMPORT.  I CHOSE IMPORT BECAUSE ITUNES DIDN'T TELL ME WHAT WAS DUPLICATED.  IT WAS ONLY AFTER RE-IMPORTING SEVERAL CD'S THAT I REALIZED THAT THERE WERE NOW DUPLICATES OF THE CD'S:  THE FILES I HAD JUST LOADED AND THOSE THAT I HAD LOADED SOME TIME AGO.  THE ORIGINALS MAGICALLY APPEARED AFTER I RE-IMPORTED THE CD'S.   I'M GUESSING THAT THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A BROKEN LINK  I DON'T KNOW HOW TO RECOGNIZE A BROKEN LINK OR HOW TO PREVENT ONE.  AFTER I REALIZED THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THE "FINDING LOST MEDIA AND DOWNLOADS" QUIDE.  I LOCATED THE MISSING MUSIC IN FINDER AND DRAGGED IT TO ITUNES.  DOES THIS COUNT AS A BROKEN LINK?
"If the latter and you use iTunes default settings for managing media, you can drag your media folder to Automatically Add To iTunes.  It should add anything in the folder but not in the library list but ignore things that are."  CAN YOU REPHRASE THIS LAST PARAGRAPH?  I DON'T KNOW WHAT "DEFAULT SETTINGS FOR MANAGING MEDIA" MEANS.
FOR "DRAG MEDIA FOLDER TO AUTOMATICALLY ADD TO ITUNES,"  I THINK YOU MEAN I CAN DRAG   /MUSIC/ITUNES/ITUNES MEDIA/MUSIC   IN FINDER TO THE ITUNES ICON IN THE DOCK.  AND, THAT THAT ACTION WILL REPLACE ANYTHING MISSING IN ITUNES BUT NOT DUPLICATE THE FILES THAT ARE IN ITUNES.  IS THAT RIGHT?
thank you for your time and help, limnos.

  • I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and I cant figure out how to access it. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sink my ipod with my account. How do I access my library?

I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and only contains "purchased" music. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sinc my ipod with my account. How do I access my entire library? Thanks

Unless you subscribe to Match, you will have to transfer your non-iTunes stuff from your old computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you want to copy non-iTunes music off of your iPod (eg, if your old computer doesn't exist), you'll need to use a third party program.  I don't know of any free ones anymore, but if you google, you can find several in the $19 range.

  • Recently I was adding music to my Ipod Touch and charging it, afterwards, my Itunes was missing music, does anyone know what happend?

A few days ago, I plugged my ipod touch into my computer to charge it, and also add new music I purchased. When I unplugged the USB cable ( I disconnected it from the ipod first, as I was told to do) I went to look through my music. There was a notification, I don't remember what it said verbatum, but the gist was "177 songs could not be properly synced onto your device". Now, I'm missing music from my itunes library. For example, I purchased two full albums from the same band, now over half the songs from the albums are just gone, they are no longer on my ipod or itunes. Does anyone know what happend, and/or how I can fix this? Please and thank you
P.S. This happend after installing itunes 6, I've noticed many other people are also having problems with it as well

Could be several things. Without more information like what was the wording of the error message I will not even guess.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Itunes 7.3.1 music and playlists missing

Updated to 7.3.1 and now the music and playlists are missing within itunes, although the music is all still present in the itunes folder.
I have no 3rd party plugins.
This is happening both on the iMac and MacBook (running OS 10.4.10)
Can I drag the itunes folder into the music library, or will that duplicate everything?
