Missing PDF icons

I updated my Adobe Acrobate Reader to the 9.2.0 version a few weeks ago, and ever since then, the icons next to PDF files have disappeared and are now just generic file icons.
Not a HUGE deal or anything, they still open with Adobe Reader and are still associated with that program, but all the PDFs in the file don't show the Reader icon with it anymore...
Small example of how they all look in my Explorer windows:
I am using Windows XP Professional if that helps?

I had this problem.
It's quite likely you or your system administrator emptied a folder that Windows uses for temporary programme installers and for some stupid reason Adobe points the Acrobat PDF icon to some file that was in that folder instead of somewhere more normal, like  c:\acrobat\...
The quick fix is this: (I know you're using v9 Pro) - 2 ways listed below:
Run Acrobat's Update from Help/About. If that does not fix your problems due to an error, your Acrobat installation is buggered although Pro itself works fine/does enough of what you want so keep on going. Reboot and try the next option. I'm sure your Windows XP installation is fine/not affected.
Download Reader 9 from the Adobe website. By default it shows the most current  (version 10 at the mo). Click on the link that asks you to download for a different OS but the page that comes up is actually one which allows you to choose back dated Acrobat Readers, just click the choices to move on through.
Go ahead and install Reader 9. It pretty much has everything you need to fix your icons without the faff of uninstalling/reinstalling Pro. And if your Pro installation was as buggered as mine (I couldn't even uninstall the thing because fo what hap[pened after the icons went missing), I could still use Pro for everything that I do.
Anyhow, by now your default icons should change to PDF icons.
Reboot to make sure the changes stick.
Now to test it:
1) If you open a PDF, Pro should still fire up. Icons fixed. You're sorted.
2) If Reader fires up, open a Windows Explorer and follow similar steps above this post but change the application from Reader to Pro.
Icons fixed and Pro opens. You're sorted.
ONE LAST THING:  If in Acrobat the Updater reports an error go to File > Preferences > Updater and change the update setting to Off (not to check for updates). This shuts up the Acrobat warning that pops up saying there's an update to install and which on my system only generated errors because it couldn't find what it needed from my original Pro installation before I got myself into this mess.

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 Reader Network Deployment Missing pdf Icon

    Hi
We have deployed acrobat 8.1.2 reader via windows gpo using the adobe customization wizard to create to a msi file. The installation went smoothly but now the desktops do not show the acrobat for .pdf files. The file type association looks ok but refreshing, restarting does not bring up the icon. How can I fix this?
    Thanks
    Jared

I have also experienced this problem with the GPO msi deployment scenario.
I first noticed this problem with Adobe Reader 6. I think it has always been there and it is there with Adobe Reader 9 too.
Orca finds problems with the msi. Most notably in the Extension table, there is no PDF entry. There is a PDF entry in the MIME table, but my understanding is there needs to be a circular reference. I've spoken to Adobe help desk and they were no help at all. This problem does not seem to affect the functionality, but it would be disconcerting to my end users not seeing the proper icon. Adobe should fix this.

  • Is your PDF icon missing after 9.1.0 update

My desktop icon for Acrobat Pro 9 turned into a generic icon after the latest update. Even reconnecting the PDF extension with the application didn't work. After searching a long time for help, I found it in this forum. (CT wrote about his Acrobat 8 version and the same problem resulting from an update. He gave the solution he used that worked for him.) I have the same OS and decided to give this solution a try. It worked for me, too!  His answer may benefit others after this latest update for Acrobat 9.
"What I did was opened up one of my pdf files, selected "Help" from the top menu  bar, and from the pull-down menu I clicked on "Repair Acrobat Installation. After it 'did its thing' I was prompted to restart the PC (which I did) and when it finished booting up, ALL the pdf icons were restored. I have  Windows XP and Acrobat 8 Professional (which I purchased) and Adobe Reader -  which came with the PC.I am pretty sure that the 'Repair Installation'  option is available in both."

I was having the same problem with PDF files.
    I tried all the suggestions.
Nothing worked correct in my case.
Finally I found a hint somewhere on internet and that solved my problem.
I opened the Diplay properties and changed the ICON SIZE (for all files) to LARGE.
    Click APPLY
    The PDF Icon was restored.
Again I set back the ICON SIZE to previous size (SMALL)
PDF Icon was  not affected (It remained correct)
This information is for all the friends suffering like me.
O Yes.  Have you installed "TweakUI (PowerToy)".
I think the PDF Icon disappeared somehow because of it.
    But I am not sure.

  • I have OSX Maverick on an iMac using Outlook e-mail.  PDF attachments are included in the e-mail  as the whole document rather than just the PDF icon.  How can i have just the PDF icon as an attachment?

In Outlook my PDF attachments appear as whole documents and not just the PDF icon.  How can I have attachments included as PDF icons and not the documents?

For your own viewing, you can of course control-click on the attachment and select "View as Icon".
For others' viewing, it depends upon their email reader.  To ensure that attachments are not displayed expicitly you can put them all in a zip file (via control click and "Compress") then attaching them, or you can use third party stuff like Attachment Tamer.

  • Error message: Missing PDF maker files in Word 2007

OK, I am beyond frustrated. I have had nothing but trouble with Windows Vista and Adobe Acrobat. Please help!!!
What happens: first, the pdf addin for Word 2007 suddenly becomes disabled, for no apparent reason. Forget about trying to re-enable it through the Add-Ins menu, because Word tells me that the "connected state of Office Add-Ins registered in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed". This is a problem for me, because I use a special font (Vietnamese) that sometimes gets corrupted when running pdf maker. The only consistent way I have found to avoid this problem is to run the pdf maker as "Quick PDF" and as far as I can see that option is only available through the pdf addin in Word, I have never been able to find it when I open the Acrobat program and create a pdf from there.
Second problem: shortly after the pdf addin becomes disabled, my Acrobat program loses the ability to create pdfs altogether. I get the error message "Missing PDF maker files". Yes, I have tried repairing the installation and re-starting my computer per the instructions given. It doesn't fix the problem. I also tried looking in the Knowledge Database on this website, but it appears that the instructions they have to fix the problem there are for earlier versions of Word, not 2007, because my version of word does not look like the version of Word in their little videos.
This is the second time this has happened. The first time I resolved the problem by a) re-installing Acrobat, which is a pain because it involves calling Adobe and wading through their customer service to get a new installation number, and b) paying a computer repair service to dig deep into the guts of my computer and convince it to change the Office Add-ins to allow the pdf addin again. It worked for about 6 months, and now I have the same problem again. For some reason Vista is spontaneously disabling Acrobat.
I simply cannot deal with this every few months. We all know that Vista is a crappy program, but I run a business and I need a program that works with whatever crappy program Microsoft puts out. Please, can anyone give me suggestions about how to re-enable these functions when Vista disables them?
    Thanks in advance!
    Alycia

how do I get the PDF icon to show on all of my PDF?

Generally the icons are a selection that is set in MS Explorer (on the PC). Depending on the version of windows, there are various ways of getting at the properties related to an icon, including what application would open the file.

What you are seeing is how Safari works now in iOS 5. There is no way to get that icon in Safari now. There other much better browsers available in the App Store. Look at iCab Mobile, Mercury, Atomic, ....

  • Trying to add PDF icons to my Assignment Block (CRM 7 WebUI)

    Hello gurus,
I am trying to display a pdf icon in every row of my assignment block in CRM 7 WebUI. I am using one click actions, so I have an actions column, and I the logic to make the icon image appear is in the GET_OCA_T_TABLE of the context node class. When I create actions like delete and edit, it is very easy to get the icons, for example, the following code works perfectly and the icons are displayed in the assignment block:
       ls_one_click_action-id      = 'DELETE'.
        ls_one_click_action-icon    = 'delete.gif'.
        ls_one_click_action-text    = ''.
    ls_one_click_action-id      = 'EDIT'.
        ls_one_click_action-icon    = 'edit.gif'.
        ls_one_click_action-text    = ''.
But, I cannot add a pdf icon.... I have tried the paths to PDF icons in the MIME repository, and I have tried getting the PDF icons like this cl_thtmlb_util=>GC_ICON_FILE_PDF or with cl_thtmlb_util=>get_icon_url(pdf)... nothing displays anything but a broken image.
    Please help me!  <text removed>

  • Missing PDF Options in Acrobat Pro 8

For some reason, on some machines in the office "PDF Options" is missing when we try to print to the Adobe PDF 8.0 printer under OS X 10.4.10. Both machines are Intel-based.
Two of the machines in the office have the option, two don't.
We thought it was something specific to these machines. Then yesterday, on a brand new MacBook Pro, we reinstalled a user's license from the DVD and the same thing happened: no PDF Options. This machine had been used for two days. Microsoft Office 2004 installed, Firefox and that's it - otherwise bog standard. Never had an Adobe product on it, never had Acrobat on it. Updated to 8.1.1, no change.
We've tried completely uninstalling, trashing all the Adobe and Acrobat-related items in /Library and ~/Library, same with prefs. We've searched the entire machine for any string that includes 'adobe' or 'acrobat' and trashed them, emptied the trash, restarted, then reinstalled (re-serialising in the process). We've reset the printing system and added the printers back.
We've cleaned the cache files (using AppleJack, a great little utility), repaired permissions, reinstalled the 10.4.10 Combo Updater, DiskWarriored the machine.
We're tearing our hair out, because in our office, this option is vital to the daily work flow.
Is anyone else seeing this? Anyone got a reliable fix?

I "think" that there may be a way to correct this, but it's at your own peril if it doesn't. Then again what have you got to lose? Here is something from another public forum. It's about Acrobat 6.x and 7.x but it sounds like the same issue. If you decide to try this and it works let us know.

Re: Acrobat 7 Pro: missing PDF Options menu in all applications
    Hi all,
I solved this error with Acrobat 7 by deleting the com.adobe.print.AdobePDF7 folder from the user library preferences. It may be missed by those who are deleting preferences because it is not grouped with the com.adobe.acrobat.xxx.plist files.
The equivalent folder for Acrobat 6 is called com.adobe.print.AdobePDF located in the users home library preference folder.
    I hope this helps.
    Best,
    John"

  • PDF icon images appear on desktop, but not in folders?

I just updated to Windows 7. Before the update I could only view pdf icons on the desktop and inside folders would be a screenshot pdf icon image of the file. This was very helpful when using a lot of pdf files.
NOW, after installing Windows 7, I have the exact opposite. I can see PDF image icons on my desktop, but when I go into a folder, I get the standard Adobe pdf red-white icon (no image).
Has anyone experienced this? Ive googled this and Im not the only one with this problem. Has anyone found a fix for this?
    Thanks
Update: I forgot to add that PowerPoint files, jpegs and bmp files still work and you can still see the preview images. Just not PDFs.

graffiti - thanks for the reply. I did as you suggested but it didnt work. Now some icons are showing up but I dont know why nor do I know if this is a adobe issue or a windows 7 issues. While googling it looks like each side is blaming the other. Here is a screen shot. Some icons appear and one does not. I opened it and re-saved it but still doesnt show a thumbnail.

  • PDF icons?

Before Yosemite, the icon of a PDF document always showed the image of the first page of the document.  Now that I have installed Yosemite, all the PDFs on my Desktop show the Preview icon:
The thumbnail image is a much better guide to the contents of a PDF than the gibberish in the titles of most PDFs that come in from elsewhere.
Is there some setting in Preview or the OS to make the PDF icon show again the first page of the PDF?

Here is the PDF icon that somehow did not get into my question:

  • Firefox 31 changes all PDF icons to Firefox HTML icons that I can not seem to change back, can this be rectified? Using Windows XP.....

Once Firefox 31 is installed it sees all PDF files as Firefox HTML files and changes all of the PDF icons to Firefox HTML icons. This change can not seem to be reversed without uninstalling Firefox.
Only the icon is changed, not the .PDF extension.

Thank you for your reply but it's not that simple:
Windows now thinks that the default file type for .pdf is Firfox HTML Document.
I can change which program opens .pdf files but I can't change the icon.
    Not a Firefox problem? Really?
    EDIT:
Let me explain further so that you can understand. In folder options / file types I can scroll thru and choose any file type / advanced and change the icon...every one of them except (now) .pdf. There is no advanced tab. Only the message about "restore" I mentioned before.
Firefox changed the file association for .pdf files and now I can't fix it.
    And from another thread:
"Firefox 31 is not converting or renaming your files. All it is doing is registering with the Windows OS as an application that is able to open the files and Windows then changes the file's icons accordingly.
This should only occur if no other application has already registered your .pdf files."
Well I guess that's not true is it?
