Missing photos -- dashed lines

I recently installed iPhoto 6.
In the default, "organize" view, several pictures have now been replaced by rounded-square outlines in dashed lines. The pic titles are still there, but no pics. Double-clicking to edit these missing photos brings up a blank screen in edit mode.
I'm not even able to delete these squares.
What's up?

Select one of the files in the Originals folder and bring up the Info window on it, Command-I. Then under Default Application assign Preview and click on the Change All.. button. If that doesn't help check my posts in this thread.

What is it, that you see or don't see? Empty rectangles surrounded by a dashed border like marching ants? In the browser or the viewer?
If you do not see the images in the browser, then you have a problem with your thumbnails, not your previews. Try to select all of the empty rectangles and select (from the main menu bar)
         Photos > Generate Thumbnails.
If you want to recreate your Previews, in case they do not show properly in the Browser, hold down the options-key while you select "Update Previews".

  • Browser photos appearing as dashed lines in a box shape, how can I fix?

I just created a couple of Projects and imported the pictures.
When I look at the Project in the Browser a very large number of pictures don't appear, but rather are just square dashed-line boxes (like the pictures are still processing for viewing in the Browser). They remain like this.
I can select the picture and it will appear in the Viewer, though for a number of them when I click on the dashed-line box the Viewer will be entirely grey for a minute, and then display the picture.
If I select a picture in the Browser, it will immediately display in the Viewer.
Is there any way to fix this? Its a nightmare!
    Thanks-

You can try selecting one of the dashed images in your Browser and Select Images>Generate Thumbnails and see if it goes away.

  • Recovered missing photos, but created many duplicates, not showing in album

I tried to clean my hard disk. It seemed that many of the same photos were saved in 'data' file, and an 'original' file, which I located in Pictures AND my computer. I felt they were duplicate files, not duplicate photos, and sent them to the trash-not yet emptied, and then copied one of the folders containing every photo on to an external drive.
After I re-opened iPhoto, saw that many photos were missing, I did research and learned that I shouldn't tamper with 'Picture'. Since then...
    1. I have imported the photos back into the Library. Success--except that the gray boxes with dashed lines are still there for some photos and not others, and many of the photos have created duplicates.
    2. I ran 'duplicate annihilator', but I didn't feel like it didn't do the job.
    3. Then, I launched iPhoto with Command+Control, which I believe restores the old library, which is helpful--but now I have almost twice as many photos as I originally had.
Even though, if the photos are restored, which they seem to be (gray boxes with dashed lines still there for some photos, but not all) the individual albums do not seem to be restored.
Although tedious, I don't mind sifting through the photos and recreating the individual albums, but:
    -is there another way?
-how can I be certain that all the photos have been restored?
-do I delete the gray boxes?
-what can I do with the album 'recovered photos'?
I feel like I've done all the research, and everything possible to recover the photos, but I'm missing a link or two connecting all the dots.
    Thank you, in advance.

    HI Myrtle,
You can start all over and import the photos you had saved to the external drive.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder in your Pictures folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and at the message screen choose to create a new library.
Once the new library is opened, go to File>add to library and navigate to the external and choose the folder of photos to import.
The albums will not be restored this way as you are creating a new library. I really feel this is better for you than trying to undo all the duplicates and gray boxes you had.
Once you are sure all your photos are imported you can delete the old library on the desktop or burn it to disk first just in case.

  • How do I recover missing photos in iPhoto 11?

    HI!
I recently upgraded to iPhoto 11 (from iPhoto 9, I believe). There are 12 photos missing from  the 'Photos' section of my library. There are dashed lines around the locations where the photos should be (it is a sequence of 12 pictures), so I assume the originals are in the iPhoto Library somewhere. How do I have the placed back where they should be?
         Thanks for your help.
    Doug Chisholm

Give these two fixes a try  to see if they can recover those missing photos.  But be sure to have a backup of your current library in case the results are not to your liking:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Draw a continuous dashed line

I suspect the answer is simpler than I expect, but it has been eluding me none the less, so I've been wondering how to draw a continuous dashed line, as per the title. I'm cleaning up a photo I made a while back and would to create a flowing line and set it to be dashed as you can do in Adobe Illustrator, where you could draw a line and edit the line type to be dashed, or dotted, or a bunch of snowflakes or what have you.
I can hear you asking, "why not just use Illustrator?". Well, I do not have it. I used Illustrator and Photoshop CS6 in an art class senior year of high school, but it has been a little while so I'm trying to re-learn the ropes a little bit.

I was able to use Filter - Other - Minimum with a particular set of parameters, followed by a Median filter to smooth the results, to get something not unlike what you showed, but given that I derived the parameters empirically from your very limited image, at exactly the size given, I wouldn't be surprised if the characteristics of this sequence of operations are way off from what you want.
In any case, if you'd like to see this "proof of concept" action to understand what I did, here it is:
    http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/BlackFindingAction.zip
Keep in mind this will be VERY sensitive to the thresholds and sizes chosen for the various steps, and is crafted to work at an image with just the resolution you showed above.

  • Finding missing photos

I recently purchased a new Windows 7 computer and upgraded to LR3.3 at the same time. I used Laplink PCmover to transfer my files over to the new machine. I was using multiple external drives to store photos, I installed a dedicated 2 TB internal drive for photos only and moved all of the images onto one location for LR to reference. I will use the external drives for backups. As others on this forum have found, all of my LR files were grayed out. After doing some research, I have a better understanding of how Lightroom works and how to restore.
I have been using the "Photo is Missing" icon on individual photos in the gallery with the "Find Nearby Missing Photos" selected. Sometimes dozens of photos are restored, often all taken on the same day and in the same folder. However, too often...they come back only one at a time, even though there are others from the same date in the same file. Any ideas on why this happens?
I have over 22,000 more photos to restore! Has anyone found a way to automate this process?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I structure folders for ease of back up as I would always use LR to locate image files, far quicker than any other method. I have one folder called original files, with another folder for each year , all files are imported into date based folder under that. This is backed up to an external drive every week and an on line back up runs every night.
I have the same structure for other types of files such as videos (I don't use LR for videos as I shoot in AVCHD) and use Bridge for these searching by metadata again rather than by using folders. Folders are a pretty poor way of structuring files a left over from out dated operating systems., so just ensure that folders are kept simple and easy to back up, use more sophisticated metadata based searches through LR or Bridge for locating files when they are required.

  • Migrating iPhoto to Aperture 3 and the case of missing photos

I love the new Aperture 3 and am so excited to migrate from iPhoto. I have used the Aperture feature of importing an entire iPhoto library directly into a new Aperture library. This doesn't produce any errors (except for a handful of missing photos which aren't too important), but when I look at the resultant Aperture library (8 hours later), I am missing a LOT of photos. My iPhoto library has about 24,000 photos and my Aperture library only has about 16,000. Because of the differences in the way Aperture and iPhoto keep track of edits, my Aperture library should have considerably more photos than iPhoto and not less. Please help!

In new iLife 09 (or iPhoto 09), some pics are now black in the Event, simply an outline of dotted lines. Yet, when I cursor fast, they appear, so I know there are still there.
That doesn't mean that they are "still there". It means that a cached version of the image exists.
I recall, when migrating photos it noted that the photos in iPhoto (old system) needed to be formatted to new iPhoto, so I allowed. Makes me wonder if something in a pic title or such is the issue.
That's a standard procedure when you upgraded to the later version of iPhoto. Happens every time to up a version, and to everyone.
With regard to Portrait. When I import from iPhoto to Aperture, any Portrait picture has a 2nd verson next to it, but in the Horizontal. All Horizontal pics, there is only the one version of the pic.
Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". iPhoto, seeing the flag, reads the intention and creates a modified version. Hence the second version of the Portrait pics and no second version of the Landscape ones. The landscape ones don't have an auto-rotate tag.
For the dotted line problem, try rebuild your iPhoto Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Keynote 09: can you control length of dashes in a dashed line?

Previous versions let you control the length of the dashes in a dashed line. Now, not so much. Or have I missed some secret way to alter the length of the dashes?
This retrogression in functionality is super annoying. Why would anyone think that (a) all dashed lines would look best at the same length of dashes, and (b) keeping the ability to control the length of dashes would be too confusing?

  • Best way to restore missing photos

My iPhoto library consists of about 8,000 photos in 150 events. I recently discovered that a number of photos are missing (perhaps several hundred). I'm not sure how, why or when they went missing, and they're scattered across various events so the problem isn't tied to any particular event(s). All I know is that they are in fact missing, and currently my library is set to be managed, not referenced. So at least I know that any future additions will be copied into the library. I also just rebuilt the library, so apart from the missing photos, everything appears to be intact.
I did find original copies of some of the missing photos on a DVD, so at least some of the missing photos can be replaced. It seems to me there are two ways to go about locating and replacing the missing photos in my library. First method is to attempt to rebuild the library again, and each time I am warned about a missing photo I can opt to find and replace it. The second method is to manually go through each event, double-click on each picture and if I get the warning, to find and replace the photo.
I can see pros and cons to each method. Bottom line is, I am probably not going to be able to replace all of the missing photos. I can live with that, and rest assured I will be much more diligent about managing my library and backing it up. But if I can't recover the photos, I don't want thumbnails that lead nowhere or other clutter messing up my library. That alone makes me think that the second method is the way to go (I assume that I can delete a thumbnail from iPhoto if the actual photo is missing and iPhoto will perform the necessary cleanup to the library).
Is there another way to go about this that I haven't considered, or any third party tools that may make the job easier? I'm really not looking forward to having to sift through 8,000 photos and double-click each one to see if it's actually there. But I want to nip this problem in the bud before I add any more photos, and before I upgrade to iPhoto '09. So I'll do whatever I have to do.
    Thanks!

Neither is the way to go. If you're missing pics then that database is corrupted. Time for a new one.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Then import the missing ones from back up.

  • Missing photo

    hi
i'm on the last of 10 lessons on lightroom 3. i imported the four photo's for the lesson, but they all have the "missing photo" icon instead of the "metadata file needs updating" icon. i managed to convert one photo to the "sidecar has conflict" icon, but still i cannot continue. everything i have tried says file is empty, or path not found. yet i can see all four photo's quite clearly. does it really have to be as complicated as this? its taking all the pleasure out of it.
    any advise please.
    from jan

    Hey Jan,
If you bring up LR, and go to Catalog Settings,  the top lines in the window will tell you where the catalog resides, and what it's name is.
To delete the catalog entirely, you want to delete the .lrcat and .lrdat files/folders.  Just trash them.   The test images you imported are where ever you left them, since you used Add.  Delete as appropriate or not, they aren't that big.
Thre is no need to uninstall LR, and uninstalling it does not delete the catalog anyway.
The most important part of putting together a new catalog is figuring out where you want to put your photos.  Think about it carefully, then make a home for them.  Once you create the catalog, you can put all of your images in there.  That would be your "main place" to store your images.  I recommend an internal drive, one that isn't near being full.  If you only have one drive, then your choices are a _little_ more limited.
As I said before, my images are located under a single folder, called CanonPhotos.  That way I know where they all are, and it makes it easy to back them up, or move them.  Just move that one whole directory if needed...
Start with only a _few_ images!  Do NOT make copies of 4500 images!  That's just silly...  I would take no more than 100 of them.
Then, when you are happy and think you have the structure all settled in your mind, THEN you can import the rest of them, but use the Move command instead.  That will move them into the same locations as all the rest of the images, and you're on your way!
As for raw...  Yes, working with raw is a bit more limiting, in that you have to use a "raw converter" to edit them.  You have several choices: your program that came with your camera, LR, or PS (via ACR).  When you install LR it will automatically connect you to PS, if PS is already installed.  So that's one down.
Later, when you import your raw images, the only difference you will notice in LR is when you want to edit in PS, it will make a new file, because PS can not (and should not) write to the raw file.  Other than that, all things will be basically the same.
Most people will tell you: Never delete your raw images.
There is a good reason for this.  If you think about film negatives, and printing photos... destroying your raw file is the same as printing a photograph from your film, then throwing away the film.  You just don't do it.  If you keep your raw image, then later on, when you have a new idea on trying something (converting to black and white, making it all magenta, doing strange things with noise, etc), then you have your original to work from.. Otherwise, you are stuck with how you did it the first time.
Eventually your workflow will turn into something like this:
copy the images from your memory card into a temporary folder on your computer.
Import all of the images into LR
    Play and Print
    That's it!
So, think about where you want to store all of your images over the long haul, and then how you want the folders organized...
    Cheers!

  • Iphoto 08 has missing photos and wheel of death

Bought new imac and upgraded to iLife 08. Upgraded my photo library of some 4000 photos all looked fine at first.
Noticed that in the middle of the photo library are about 20 or so missing photos they display as dashed grey squares. If you scroll so you have these thumbnails on the screen or open an event with these photos in you get the wheel of death and you either have to force quit iphoto or wait for ever to quit iphoto.
I have rebuilt the photo library and used the batchmod tool as described on another post. I have also searched for and removed alias links etc.
Now at a loss as to next move. I have the photos on my old laptop running previous iphoto version plus a few older DVD backups.
Is it anything to do with my old photo ipod?
I could just delete the iphoto library and start over importing from scratch but what if it happens again? Any advice?

It means that your main Library has a damaged database file.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Drawing dashed lines

Here's one I've never been able to figure out. How do you draw a dashed line in Apple Works Draw? I've always used 6.2.4 before upgrading to 6.2.9 tonight. My old ClarisDraw program has dashed lines under the Arrow Style palette but it is missing in Apple Works.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Mark
The closest you can get in AppleWorks is using one of the patterns for a line. It actually comes out quite well using a diagonal pattern.

  • Help please - unable to open missing photos 'browse' dialogue box

    Hi All,
new to the forum, but long time LR user.
I have a problem with LR v.3.4.1 I have a few missing photos (quite a few actually) in my catalogue from when I moved hard drives in v1.  I jumped from v.1 to v3.  But used to be able to find them still.
Now when I click the ? icon the browse dialogue box won't open.  Double clicking only switches from thumnail to full size - though there are no index images of these photos.
I've checked the drives, the images still exist.  I tried re-iporting the images to see if that would bring them up as duplicates, but the LR finder would not see any images there.
Since switching from v.1 to v.3 I have done quite a few shoots, and I'd be sad (no mortified!) to loose either bit of editing work.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Damian

I should say, this is the case for both my Macbook Pro running v10.5.8
and my new today, iMac running v10.6.7
