Missing Print and Fax Preferences - no joke

I am logging onto my grandmother's brand new MacBook & trying to setup a printer for her. It has been a fiasco, which as a major Mac head is not a familiar feeling. I comfortably identify myself as expert on the user & support side.
After a few hours of fighting with her existing printer when I was there at the holidays, I ascertained that it had lost its little USB brain. HP sent out a new printer & I got her to plug it in and ran the setup assistant for her. All is well. I went to print and it stalled. Kept trying to connect, no dice. I hit the pulldown. 2 copies of the printer. Printed to the 2nd copy...all good. Great. Now I'll just delete the 1st one so she's not confused.
I go to System Preferences. No icon for Print and Fax Preferences. I hit the 'show all' button. Nothing additional. I search for print in the search window on the preferences app. Nothing. Did they move it in 10.5? I check the help file...no it says go to system preferences>print and fax.
So what gives? How do I resolve this and retrieve the print and fax preferences? Wanna see the window for yourself? http://www.killerbanshee.com/noprintfaxpreferences.png
(It is black & white cuz I was running it black and white to have faster screen response over a remote connection.)
Thanks,
Kriss

Does /System/Library/PreferencePanes/PrintAndFax.prefPane exists ?
Also, please provide any information available in Console (/Applications/Utilities/Console) when you launch System Preferences.

  • How create Default Paper Size of 6" X 9" in Print and Fax System Prefs

    I would appreciate help in creating a Default Paper Size of 6" X 9" because this size is not listed among the options for Tiger's Print and Fax in System Preferences. I mainly use my imac and Epson Photo R200 printer to print 6" X 9" formatted pages on 8 1/2" by 11" sheets created in MS Word. But without an Apple default for a 6" X 9" custom size, I run into all kinds of formatting problems, including the making of PDFs. My friend has a Windows machine that does have the 6" X 9" among its options, and she has no problem producing the results I am after. Thanks for helping!
    imac G-4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    You should be able to create a custom page size with these dimensions in the Page Setup Dialog (under Paper Size). After creating it, use the "Save As Default" under the Settings menu.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can not add my new printer to the print and scan preferences

    I have purchased a Canon Pixma MG5350 and try to connect it to my mac but with no results. I have installed all the drivers but can not add it to the print and scan preferences. I looked in Applications > Utilities > System Information > USB and it does not even show that it is connected. The printer comes without a USB so I bought a 5m USB 2.0 A to B cable and eventually something is wrong. Is the USB too long, not the right one or what is the problem?

    I have already got my refund for the cable! I tried a friends cable and everything works!

  • HT3669 So my Brother MFC-3360C was able to scan right into my Dell laptop and now that i have upgraded my macbook pro to Lion it will only print and fax.  that stinks. now i have to get a new printer as i never fax anymore but scan to be able to email the

    It looks like the Brother MFC-3360 can only print/fax with a MacBook Pro which stinks that it cannot scan ( a function on the MFC that worked on my Dell laptop).  Do i need to get another MFC that works with apple?! who faxes anymore? i need to scan and email the documents, not print and fax.  this is a very unpleasant surprise.

    Brother have released compatible Lion drivers and utilities for your MFC-3360.
    They are here, download and install them,

  • What printer and fax modem for leopard

    Since updating to leopard I`m having a lot of trouble with my Canon MP 780. I have tried new drivers and everything else I can think of including reading these forms for a solution ever since leopard was released.It seems to me that apple forgot all about faxing and printing when they developed leopard. So my question is, is there a multifunction printer that works well with leopard. Seems nothing can save my MP 780. Also I need a fax modem but it seems they are far and few between that play nice with leopard. A few suggestions would be greatly appreciated.It seems as though leopard is apple`s Vista when it comes to printing and faxing. Sorry I`m just really tired of this.

    I'm using a HP Officejet 7780 which works great, the bad news is it was recently replaced by the OfficeJet 8500 series AIO. HP make 3 versions:
    1. Base model with ethernet & USB connections
    2. OJPro 8500 Wi-Fi with touch screen, wi-fi (in additition to ethernet and USB connections) & duplexing
    3. OJPro 8500 Premier with touch screen, wi-fi, duplexing, touch screen, dual paper trays and 2 complete sets of ink, legal size scanning etc.
    The new OJ 8500 series also uses ink that is designed to be water resistant and offer a lower cost of printing than a similarly priced laser printers.

  • Hp Laserjet P1102w Doesn't show up in Print and Fax list OS 10.5.8

    Got an HP Laserjet 1102w and tried to install under Mac OS 10.5.8.  I downloaded and sucessfully ran the HP drivers but when I go to add the printer under system preferences/printers and fax the list of available printers is blank.  I've tried several routines suggested by a web search of the problem to no effect.
    Anybody out there solved this?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Thanks for your attention.  I figured out the solution.  See below.
    The printer was connected by USB and I was also trying to get the wireless connection set.  I had intermittent progress on both fronts but could not get a successful installation either as a USB connection or wireless connection.  The printer would "disappear" off the list of available printers (using the "+" to add printer, OS 10.6.8) or not respond to setup commands.  And I could not get the printer's wireless connection to my network to "take".
    Printing the  configuration page was of no use.  If the printer is unable to connect to the wireless network it reports the printer IP address as 0.0.0.0.
    TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM
             (clicking + under "Print & Fax" the printer does not appear or the printer name disappears)
    1) replace the USB cable - the original was susceptible to cutting out;
    2) give up on wireless - to - wireless set up methods - no amount of factory resetting would clear the mystery connection block;
    3) set up the wireless connection by way of a (good) USB cable;
    3) switch the browser used to view the printer's setup page from Firefox (34.0.5 for Mac OS 10.6.8) to Safari
    4) use WPA security mode (not WEP as suggested by HP's help files).
    The primary troublemaker was the bad USB cable.  Going thru a wireless set up presumes that the printer can connect to the network. As already noted, the wireless connection was not working.  The blue network light would not come up steady.  Some transmission option was blocking sucessfull handshaking between the printer and my wireless router.  I tried the recommended factory reset methods without success.
    I needed a good USB connection to get to the printer's setup options.
    Don't know what was up with Firefox - a bad plugin or something?  It just would not connect to the printer via IP addressing.  Safari worked fine.  (Now the printer is successfully setup Firefox has decided to work too.)
    SO THE SOLUTION IS:
          1) connect the printer and Mac via a (good) USB cable;
          1) use Safari to get in to the printer's setup functions (via system preferences/print & fax/options & supplies/show printer web page);
          2) follow the recommended setup options (HP support for Laserjet P1102w, OS 10.6, using a USB cable to set up a wireless connection);
          3) select the proper wireless network from the list;
          4) reset the security mode to WPA; and
          5) give the printer the correct wireless network password.
    Thank-you, and the forum, for your help.

  • Payment Advice Issue- Print and fax at the same time

    Hi,
    Currently payment advices are being sent to business partners (vendors) thorugh fax/email.   This is because process module Z_SAMPLE_PROCESS_00002040 is active in the system.
    What I want to do is to be able to also print the payment advices even if vendor has communication data in the master data.  Program RFFoEDI1 is used with a custom form.   IDOCS are sent correctly to bank and remittance advices are faxed to vendor successfully.   With business wanting hard copies of remittance advices, when I try to reprint after first payment run is done and faxes sent running RFFOEDI1 and the payment document number, system says no records selected.   I searched in OSS and all the notes related to this issue are already in our system.
    I have tried hard to solve this but no luck even I have done this before with other print programs but no RFFOEDI1.  One option is to remove the fax/email addresses from vendor which allows me to print but client does not want to remove fax numbers from vendor master.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Look into BTE 2050, through which you could possibly e-mail an additional copy to a generic company e-mail as back up electronic filing of RA. And then you can print it if need to print them on Adhoc basis

  • Adding Printer from Print and Fax does not bring up the correct Window.

    Hi,
    When I first had my Macbook, OSX Leopard, I tried adding a printer and saw that the Window that popped up allowed me to add printers from IP, Windows, Local, Etc.
    However, when I came back to add a printer now, all I get is this window:
    http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/2748/picture1vc9.png
    That window pops up when I press the + on this window:
    http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/8923/picture2sc1.png
    I remembered when I press the + button, it would come up with a different window than the one I get now, which allowed me to add a printer from Windows, among other options.
    Please let me know if the window I get right now is supposed to happen. I can't add any printers from the window I get now.
    Thanks alot.

    Just to add a bit of clarity to the previous response, you need to click on the clear, oval widget at the upper right-hand corner of the the window. That will reveal the Toolbar with the options for IP, Windows, etc.

  • Mac 10.5.8 system preferences not responding when opening print and fax

    My HP photosmart printer has stopped responding.  The pinwheel comes up and freezes the computer when ever I try and access the printer, or anything to do with the printer.  I have also tried going in through system preferences and the I cannot even access it. The pinwheel again pops up.  I have not added any software lately.  I have tried to update my software both for the Mac and the printer.  There are no updates available.  I am using Mac 10.5.8
    Any ideas / solutions????

    First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • HP Printer and Fax Drivers fails to install, 10.3.9

    I am using an iMAC G5 running 10.3.9. Purchased an HP Officejet J6480 all-in-one printer. HP Printer installer fails midway thru install when it reaches the install for the fax drivers. I have downloaded both updates of the driver (9.7 and 9.7.1) from HP and and separately attempted to install each. In both cases, the install failed again at the fax driver install.
    I have gone stepwise with HP phone support for both install and uninstall for each HP installer(9.7.1) and the install failed at the same point. HP's assessment is that their product say's it is 10.3 compatible and since it fails only after reaching the the fax driver install, it must be an Apple problem.
    Note: I installed the printer on my work-issued Windows XP laptop and it works fine including faxing.
    If anyone can provide guidance, it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hang on, the 10.3.9 Mac only had 256MB RAM ? Could be part of the cause. I remember reading the minimum requirements, and I do remember it was more than 256MB RAM, maybe 384MB.
    I downloaded the 9.7.1 update, it's nearly 200MB. OUCH! Didn't try to install it on my 10.3.9 G4, but did check if it would allow a partial install with a little bit of trickery. It didn't want to play.
    Try again with the 2GB installed, if it's still playing up I'll try installing it here. At least then we'll know.
    I've loved HP too, had HP and Epson before moving to Canon. The HP was great, but the new kit I looked at (might have been a 6300 Series model got truly awful customer ratings on Amazon and HP sites, especially from Mac users on all versions of OSX.
    I'm hopeful the extra RAM will make all the difference.

  • I can not open print and fax

    Last Friday we installed a new printer on our computer at work. It is running OS X 10.5.8. It worked well all day friday, and we were printing with no problems. Now how ever, when I came in on Monday, booted up my computer and went to print something, it just sat there with the wheel spinning and did not progress. I tried to go under the print & fax setting to see if anything was qued in the printer, but now that wont open either. Everything else seems to open, although the computer has slowed down quite substantially. What can i do?

    Usually this is because you've got graphics that are cmyk or grayscale not RGB, or that are larger than 4000 by 4000 pixels.   Move them on your hard disk so fcp can't find them and make them rgb and resize to an acceptable pixel dimension.

  • Missing Finder (and Finder preferences) icons

    I have an odd issue. I noticed today that the small icons next to the files that done which application the file opens in are gone as are the previews for the file (if I select a PDF the arrows to switch pages work but there's no image preview).
    Also, I noticed that when I go to Finder Preferences, the pictures for each menu item are gone (see link):
    http://www.savagevenus.net/x/finder.png
    Is there something wrong or am I going crazy?
    Thanks!

    Blah, I totally thought I worded that sentence differently D:
    I meant to say that I contacted AppleCare/Support on the telephone but for some reason I didn't. Yeah, I contacted AppleCare on Friday and they mentioned to rollback to 10.6.2 and skip the update because some computers had problems with 10.6.3.
    Trying to delete the finder.plist file - is it normal for it to keep reappearing after I delete it? I was deleting com.apple.finder.plist and it just keeps reappearing. I assume that's normal and it's just putting a default file in there?

  • I can't print two-sided with my macbook air. i've tried to look for the driver in the settings of printer and faxes but there is none, my printer is able to print for that kind of option. please help

    Canon MP280 Series

    When you select print you should see a menu option labeled Printer Settings (or Printer Options). This may be hidden in 2 different ways. First, the program may have minimized the print dialog box. Look for a button labeled Show Details. If you see it you'll need to click on the button to see all the printer options that are available. Having done this you'll see more options. Typically you'd look for the Printer Settings under a popup menu labeled Layout but sometimes something else is showing. For example, below you'll see that Safari hides it under Safari.

  • Missing options and functionality in my internal modem for faxing?

    I think my internal modem software on my G4 with OS 10.3.9 isn't fully functional. I can send and receive faxes on my dedicated fax line just fine now, but I want to cancel that phone line and set the modem up to receive faxes on my regular house phone line -- that has an answering machine attached. So that means I need to be able to set it up to receive faxes manually somehow when I pick up the phone and hear a fax.
    I picked this reply up from another forum:
    Then, under "System Preferences", look for the "Print & Fax" panel, select the "Fax" panel, and setup with your personal settings. After that, click the button that says "Set Up Fax Modem..." which creates a Fax Queue (similar to a print queue). I like to have the "Show Fax status in menu bar" box checked also.
    The thing is, I do NOT get the "Set Up Fax Modem" to make a Fax Queue or the "Show Fax Status in menu bar" when I'm in the "Print and Fax" panel. All I can do is check a box that says "receive faxes on this computer", add my telephone number, and choose whether I want the fax as a PDF or send an email, or which printer to print it to. That's it! I can't tell now when a fax is coming in or who is sending it or anything about the fax. I need more functionality, is there a utility I am missing??
    Thanks for any help! --Karen
