'Missing select' error for update statement using WITH clause

Hi,
I am getting the below error for update statement using WITH clause
SQL Error: ORA-00928: missing SELECT keyword
  UPDATE A
  set A.col1 = 'val1'
     where
  A.col2 IN (
  WITH D AS
  SELECT col2 FROM
  (SELECT col2, MIN(datecol) col3 FROM DS
  WHERE <conditions>
    GROUP BY PATIENT) D2
  WHERE
  <conditions on A.col4 and D2.col3>

Hi,
The format of a query using WITH is:
WITH  d  AS
    SELECT  ...  -- sub_query
SELECT  ...   -- main query
You don't have a main query.  The keyword FROM has to come immediately after the right ')' that ends the last WITH clause sub-query.
That explains the problem based on what you posted.  I can't tell if the real problem is in the conditions that you didn't post.
I hope this answers your question.
If not, post a complete test script that people can run to re-create the problem and test their ideas.  Include a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) for all the tables involved, and the results you want from that data.
In the case of a DML operation (such as UPDATE) the sample data should show what the tables are like before the DML, and the results will be the contents of the changed table(s) after the DML.
Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
Always say what version of Oracle you're using (e.g. 11.2.0.2.0).

  • When should SELECT ..FOR UPDATE be used?

    DB Version:10gR2
This is what 10gR2 PL/SQL documentation says about SELECT...FOR UPDATE
With the SELECT FOR UPDATE statement, you can explicitly lock specific rows of a
table to make sure they do not change after you have read them. That way, you
can check which or how many rows will be affected by an UPDATE or DELETE
statement before issuing the statement, and no other application can change the
    rows in the meantime
But i don't see SELECT...FOR UPDATE much in our production codes. Is SELECT ..FOR UPDATE used when huge amount of rows need to be updated?

Its maily used for locking table with differnt node , commely this concpet where used in
ERP products, bcoz different user can acces same table at time and do some DML
operation, using FOR UPDATE will protected ,

  • Error occuring in SELECT statement FOR UPDATE when using WITH cluase

    Hi,
    Iam using oracle 11g version
Iam having a query with fetch records for update insid with cluase as
    cursor c1 is
    With abc as (
    SELECT col1,col2 from table1, table2 where < condition>
for update of <col1> skip locked
    select * from abc,table3 where <condition>
    union all
select * from table4 where id not in (select * from abc)
if i add "for update of <col1> skip locked" this cluase
iam getting error ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis
when i remove "for update of <col1> skip locked" the block is working fine..
can i know why error is occuring i

Hi, first of all, your placing of "for update" clause is wrong. It should be at the end like:
    With abc as (
    SELECT col1,col2 from table1, table2 where < condition>
    select * from abc,table3 where <condition>
    union all
select * from table4 where id not in (select * from abc)
for update of <col1> skip locked;Second, if you try to compile it with this syntax then you will get a new error.
ORA-01786:     FOR UPDATE of this query expression is not allowed
Cause:     An attempt was made to use a FOR UPDATE clause on the result of a set expression involving GROUP BY, DISTINCT, UNION, INTERSECT, or MINUS.
Action:     Check the syntax, remove the FOR UPDATE clause, and retry the statement. So, you will not be successful with the union clause in your query.

    James,
are you already on 3.0.1.00.07 or 3.0.1.00.08? Have a look at the release notes, it says something about a bug fix for some occurrences of ORA-02014.
Also have a look at the new substitution value/item FSP_DML_LOCK_ROW which turns locking off if you set it to FALSE. See http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/3.0.1_readme.html#CHDIDIAF and also http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32472_01/doc/appdev.300/b32471/advnc.htm#BCGFDAIJ

  • Audit "SELECT FOR UPDATE" statement

    Hi all
My database is 10.2.0.3 and I enabled audit_trail to DB value already.
My purpose I want to audit "SELECT FOR UPDATE" statement on the table and I tried to enable audit "SELECT" on the table that have many records in dba_audit_trail because "SELECT" statement that include in this audit and then I tried to enable audit "LOCK TABLE" on the table that doesn't have any records n dba_audit_trail.
So my question is How to enable audit for collecting only "SELECT FOR UPDATE" statement? or anyone have any idea for this.
    Regards,

A consideration on top of the comments made by Justin:
You have an unfortunate version of the database for auditing: when you enable audit on 10.2.0.3 (or.2 or .1) the redo pattern changes - normally you will see a redo change vector for each row updated, but in these versions you will see two records, a "lock row" followed up "update row piece"; which means your volume of redo may increase significantly.
I wrote a note about it some time ago: http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/audit-ouch/ and one of the comments includes the bug number ( 5166745 ), reporting fixed in 10.2.0.4 and 11.1.0.6

    Hi,

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error in UPDATE statement.

I dont know why I am getting error mesage.
    Any idea why?

you haven't set your user name and password hereI don't believe that's necessary with Access. Then again, it's not an enterprise database.

    change it to this
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:bspipdb","+username+","+password+");
here pass your username and password...
In Oracle default user name and password is
    username = scott
password = tigerSo who uses that? Only an eejit would leave that account open.
    So the statement would be
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:bspipdb","scott","tiger");
or In Mirosoft Access there is no user name and password so the statement will be Like I said - unnecessary, and not the reason the OP is having problems.
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:bspipdb","","");>
Besides this change your table name 11-Aug-08 to anything that is not start with number or any special symbols.
for example aug112008 is good or aug is too good. No, it's still not good if you understand ANYTHING about relational databases and normalization.
I think it would work.I think you're just as stup!d as the OP.

    Hi
It isn't an alternative way: u can only explicit the COMMIT just as I said before:
    Update DBTAB set COL.
    COMMIT WORK.
Anyway just I said before the debugger can execute a COMMIT, from SAP help:
The New Debugger can run in exclusive and non-exclusive mode. Exclusive mode means that the application that is being analyzed exclusively occupies a work process of the application server during debugging. In non-exclusive mode, the Debugger functions are limited. In non-exclusive mode, after each Debugger interaction, the system requests a roll-out in the application. Therefore, an implicit database commit must be executed. This has the following consequences:
u25CF      Debugging is not possible between the statements SELECTand ENDSELECTbecause the database cursor needs to be closed when using an implicit database COMMIT statement.
In this case, program execution is terminated.
    ·        Debugging is not possible for conversion or field exits.
    ·        Due to the implicit database commit, inconsistent datasets can occur in the database.
For this reason, non-exclusive mode is not possible in productive systems.

  • "Error for COM routine using application program (return code 40,020)"

    Dear All,
    Working on 4.1
We are getting the below error while loading the Data into planning book...
"Time Series has to be updated"
After this we updated the storage bucket profile and the fiscal year varient calender.
And after this we are trying to initialize the planning area..but getting the below error...
"Error for COM routine using application program (return code 40,020)"
So then we try to run the LCM CON check  , but here also we are getting the  below log...
    "Inconsistent time series initialization horizons"
We teasted all the above in TEST system , but we are not facing any issue.
Plz plz help us to resolve the same.
    Regards,
    Rajesh Patil

    Hello Rajesh,
COM error 40,020 generally indicates that no Time Series exists for
the characteristic combination that is being loaded or saved.
In certain cases it could be related to missing Time Series for aggregates.
Therefore, performing a consistency check for the relevant planning area by running the program
/SAPAPO/TS_LCM_CONS_CHECK is usually the first option.  You could also check the relevant planning
object structure and any aggregates using the programs /SAPAPO/TS_PSTRU_TOOL and /SAPAPO/TS_PSTRU_CONS_CHECK.
Additionally, please make sure that the time series exists for the horizon for which data is to be loaded. Should all these not resolve the issue, the problem will be resolved by deinitializing & reinitializing the time series.
Please note that deinitializing of the the planning area will lead to data loss, so please take the backup of your data before you
    deinitialize the planning area.
    Hope this helps.

    Ade

  • Error for COM routine using application program (return code 40.301)

    Hi All,
We are loading data in the DP book interactviely and then trying to Execute the Update Quantity button. The error message given is "Error for COM routine using application program (return code 40.301)".
We are on APO 5.0 and have the highest Support Pack of SAPKY50011.
I have searched in the SAP notes and one note 1050350 talks about a similar issue however the corrections mentioned are already there in our system and there the desired SP is SAPKY50010.
Can anyone tell what could be the reason for such error and how to resolve the same.
    Thanks
    Harsh

    Hi Senthil / Vijaya,
    Thanks for your prompt response.
    Well first responding to Senthil
    - Issue is not reproducable in Dev or Q systems.
    - How to check the application logs during the time of errors
    - Yes I have checked system locks they are clear
    - We have run OM 17 and TS consistency checks but still the error persists.
I will go through the notes refered by you and see if it is of help.
    Vijaya
    - Yes you are Correct that for the related keyfigures the tick "No Negative stocks is there" also the tick for Fixed Values is also there. But the concern is that it was running fine earlier with the same settings.
To give you more inputs perhaps this is being run with the Sales Order History and the key figure which is in consideration is a Sales Override. If it is the negative values that are causing the problem they how can we avoid that figures?
Looking forward from hearing from you guys
    Thanks,

  • JDBC: Syntax error in UPDATE statement???

    Hi,
I have been trying to solve this seemingly simple problem for the past 4 hours, and I had no success. I am working on a jdbc:odbc connection which utilizes MS Access. I have been constantly getting "Syntax error in UPDATE statement", and this is the statement
(name of the table is CDs, columns are number, artist, album, label and date - all strings):
    query = "UPDATE CDs SET artist = '" + fields.artist.getText() +"', album = '" +
    fields.album.getText() + "', label = '" +
    fields.label.getText() + "', date = '" +
    fields.date.getText() + "' WHERE number = '" + fields.number.getText() + "'";
Can anybody recognize an error? Thank you,
    mirkokrug

    A couple of possibilities.
If the column NUMBER is numeric then it wouldn't need quotes around the data value. Also if the column DATE is a date or date/time type then the format from the textbox may not be correct.

select single for update *   from mara where matnr = 'ZYS''.
I opened MM02 for this material and could change the data which i'm not supposed to be as there is lock on this particular mater from single for update statemnt
    or
I even tried from other program
select single  *   from mara where matnr = 'ZYS'. in debug mode and it returned a sy-subrc eq 0.
and i don't see a lock in SM12 FOR SELECT * FOR UPDATE.....
    Can anyone clarify on this
    Thanks
    David

    Hi All,
I knew we can create a lock object but thought to give a shot without creating lock object.
So i'm just curious to know when we can use select * for update
F1 Help says select * for update creates an E type lock- which will prevent other locks(X AND S type locks) overwriting or even reading that entry
    Also ,
can someone throw some light DB lock and SAP Lock ( is this same as SAP LUW and DB LUW)
    Thanks
    David

FCPx answer: At least the answer that worked for me...
I had the same problem, as I believe many others had.
In my case the problem was with one of OSX Mavericks' new features: APP NAP.
It looks like this is ON by DEFAULT for ALL Applications and that FCPx, or Compressor for that matter, will not work if this is enabled on them.
I just disabled App Napp on FCPx and now it works, again, like a charm.
This is how you disable App Nap: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57612009-263/how-to-disable-app-nap-in-os-x -mavericks/
    I hope this helps,
