Missing syslog.conf file in /etc folder!

How do I create a syslog.conf file that I need in the /etc folder to resolve an isssue with DoorStop?

/etc/syslog.conf already exists - you just need to edit it to your needs.
The issue, of course, is that only root can edit this file. Your best bet is to run your favorite text editor using sudo in Terminal.app, e.g.:
sudo vi /etc/syslog.conf

  • Deleted syslog.conf file

Hello. I was trying to configure proftpd and intended to delete proftpd.conf, but instead I deleted syslog.conf. I am using the following version of Mac OS X:
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R2232)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 8.10.1
Could somebody with a similar configuration please post the contents of their syslog.conf file so that I can re-create the file on my system without having to re-install the OS?

  • Deploy CUPS printers.conf file via ARD?

    Hi all
Anyone have an idea how to push out CUPS Printers to Tiger clients using ARD 3? I have been trying to send out the printers.conf file located in /etc/cups to a few Macs, but after the CUPS file copies to its destination, print jobs error out with a generic "a printing error has occurred" message. I checked permissions, etc and everything looks good. I assume Im missing another file somewhere but am stumped.
Basically what I want to do is set my Mac with 5 AppleTalk printers from my LAN, and then reproduce those printers for 10 other Macs so that those users see the exact same printers I see in my Print Setup Utility. I don't want to have to set up the printers manually on each Mac. I figured it would be a no-brainer to just copy my "golden" CUPS file via ARD to the other Macs but I'm having no luck at all thus far.
Once the printers.conf file is copied to their Macs, They can "see" the new printers in their Print Setup Utility.app as desired, but they are unable to print to any of them ("printer error occured"). Rebooting doesn't help.
    Facts:
All Macs and printers are in the same AppleTalk zone.
All Macs are on the same subnet and VLAN.
All Macs are the identical version of OS X and are from the same NetBoot NetRestore master image.
    All Macs are running 10.4.7.
Users do not need to authenticate to print.
All printing is done direct to the printers - no print server is in the middle.
All Macs have the ARD 3.0 client properly installed.
All Macs are Power Mac PPC G5s with 1.5 GB RAM.
No users are logged into their Macs when I attempt to copy the printers.conf file (no users are printing or running Print Setup Utility etc)
All of the printers are PostScript/PCL HP LaserJet's with valid AppleTalk names and Zone info.
I can print to all of the printers just fine and my other Macs can print to them also when configured manually.
There must be a practical way to mass-deploy CUPS printer settings to my Macs via ARD. Obviously I'm missing a critical step. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

This is possible, but you have to be very careful because one mistake will cause this to fail:
    1. On your template computer system, reset the printing system via Printer Setup Utility then configure your printers.
    2. Backup the following files, noting their proper POSIX permissions:
    /etc/cups/printers.conf (root:lp, 600)
    /etc/cups/ppd (whole folder) (root:lp, 755)
    3. Use ARD to deploy the files in the following way:
    a. Log out all users on the client systems and reset the printing system by executing Apple's Reset Printing System script via Send UNIX command as root:
    /Applications/Utilities/Printer\ Setup\ Utility.app/Contents/MacOS/PrintingReset.sh
    b. Stop CUPS (PrintingServices) before copying any new configuration files (Send UNIX Command as root): SystemStarter stop PrintingServices
    c. Distribute the printers.conf file and ppds folder to the clients. You can either copy the items there via Copy Items, setting owner and group to root and lp, and issuing appropriate chmod commands via Send UNIX Command to set their permissions.
    d. Repair Permissions (Send UNIX Command as root): diskutil repairPermissions /
    e. Start PrintingServices again: SystemStarter start PrintingServices, and restart.
That should work. You can also distribute a printer list via the managed client, storing a printer list in the com.apple.mcxprinting XML file in an attribute mapped to dsAttrTypeStandard:MCXSettings in a computer (dsRecTypeStandard:Computers) account or group (dsRecTypeStandard:Groups) account. Account types from NetInfo, LDAPv3, or Active Directory will work.

  • Cisco Prime Soft Appliance not saving changes to syslog.conf

    Greetings,
I'm having an issue with the syslog.conf file on a Cisco Prime LMS 4.2.4 soft appliance with a Solaris base.  My workplace uses local4 as the logging facility for its network devices, and according to a discussion I found on this site, I need to add the line:
    local4.info  /var/log/syslog_info
I have attempted this several times; we're approaching at least 5 attempts today.  I have attached text files created from putty logs where I've attempted to make the necessary change.  I appreciate any assistance the community can provide.
    Regards,
    Rob

    Hi, Afroz,
I really appreciate your assistance, but I'm afraid my hopes have been dashed.  The syslog.conf reverted to its original configuration.  I will go through my steps to be sure that I understood your suggestion properly.
I edited the syslog.conf to put all messages from local4 in /opt/CSCOpx/conf/syslog-entries.txt.  Then, I exited the shell to the console, issued the 'write mem' command, and closed the session.  Upon my reconnection, I found that my changes to the syslog.conf were not saved.
Did I make the correct edits in the correct places?  Another question, is this bug present in the versions of Prime LMS running Linux and/or Windows, or does it only exist in the soft appliance running Solaris?
    Regards,
    Rob
    Edit:
I'm reading the "Installation and Migration of Cisco Prime" PDF, and it gives me the impression that Cisco Prime is only supported as Windows, Solaris, and soft appliance installations.  Is that correct?  If it is correct, then installation of Cisco Prime LMS is not supported on other Linux distros such as Ubuntu Server, CentOS, Fedora, etc.?
    My thanks.

I'm seeing tons of syslog in in var/log/messages. when I look at the logs they are mostly duplicate of what I see in the syslog_info file. Due to this my var/log is filling up so fast. Do I need to update my syslog.conf file, what is the recommended settings for prime LMS 4.2 ?

Usually we dont recommend to change anything on syslog.conf. Syslog_info is the file where all the syslogs coming from network pointed to LMS server is written.
Usually they should be controlled at the device level by checking the logging level of devices.
Mostly ASA/FW's send excessively huge amount of syslogs to LMS server which should be controlled. Also, you can check the logrot utility to control the syslog_info log size to keep in check. Logrot is an Log file rotation utilit in LMS.
Log files can expand and fill up disk space. Log files rotation helps you manage the log files more efficiently. See
Maintaining Log Files  for an overview of maintaining the log files in LMS Server.

  • Httpd.conf file missing in action

This is a weird one. I want to modify my httpd.conf file so my URL's all default to lower case. I'm using MAMP, so I navigated to Applications > MAMP, opened the file, modified it and restarted my server. (I also modified an .htaccess file.)
I then added the code LogLevel trace8 to my config file, with the understanding that I would see more "verbose" messages in my error log. Afterr restarting my servers, I reloaded my web page, then checked the log - nothing changed. That is, the log is recording my activity, but it doesn't display "verbose" messages.
Someone who was helping me on an Apache forum came to thte conclusion that my httpd.conf fiile isn't being used. So I typed httpd.conf into Apple's finder and, sure enough, I found half a dozen files with that name. I couldn't determine which is the right one, so I modifed all of them and restarted my serverrs again. There's STILL no change in my URL's, and my log is still recording generic messages.
Does anyone have any idea how I can solve this problem? First, am I correct in understanding that there must be at least ONE active httpd.conf files in order for my sites to function? If so, then I know there must be an invisible httpd.conf file somewhere on my MacBook that I need to locate.
Also, is it possible for error messages to be written to more than one Apache log at a time? It's just so strange that the error log in my Applications > MAMP folder is keeping tabs on the web pages I visit when the httpd.conf file in the same folder is apparently doing nothing.
    Thanks for any tips.

MAMP is not Apple software and is well outside the normal 'consumer' stuff they deal with in Apple stores, I therefore don't think a Genius would be either will or able to investigate this. However I can provide the following information and maybe others who have used MAMP can provide more.
/etc/apache2/httpd.conf is the file used on a standard OS X Mac
/Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf is the equivalent file used on a Mac server if you have installed Apple's Server.app
I have seen conflicting comments suggesting the location for the equivalent file for MAMP is -
    /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache/httpd.conf
    or
    ~/Library/Application Support/appsolute/MAMP PRO/httpd.conf

  • Update of kernel: file in /etc/modprobe.d missing

That it's missing I know. I tried to apply a fix to the "Warning! ehci_hcd should always be loaded before uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd, not after" by adding a file in /etc/modprobe.d according to some suggestions I found, but it didn't really fixing anything and hence I removed the file.
Now when updating the kernel it complains each time about that missing file and I can't find any information to why and based on what it still looks for that file. How do I fix this?
It doesn't affect the system as far as I can see, but the message is annoying and I prefer to clean this little mess up.

OK, let me show the output of pacman:

  • Fresh install and Im missing the /etc/ folder

    Basically my situation is simple.
I have just done a fresh install and i am missing the /etc/ folder completely. this is not good as need to alter some things in one of the boot files.
I have tried 2 clean installs and had the problem both times.
Has anyone else had this problem? Or know how to rectify it?
    Thanks in advance!

  • [solved] No dhcpd : No /etc/dhcpd.conf file

I've managed to get the KDE desktop running, but ever since starting KDE, I haven't been able to connect to anything online. When I tried to check and edit the /etc/dhcpd.conf file, that file doesn't exist. Looked at the Beginner's Guide but didn't see where I skipped whatever I should have done to make the file. Install worked great, so dhcp worked for that.
What do I do to get dhcp to work? Checked /etc/rc.conf and eth0="dhcp" is uncommented.

If those are what you are placing in the daemon section of your /etc/rc.conf then that's probably your problem. Don't use networkmanager daemon unless you have 'networkmanager' and 'network-manager-applet' installed.
    Try this
(hal syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa)

  • I restored my bookmarks from a resent .json file, but one folder is now empty and one is missing.

    Hi,
Because of reasons my computer needed to be refreshed. My old firefox profile folder was saved though, and with that the bookmarkbackups. As the title says I restored my bookmarks from a resent .json file, but one folder (containing probably about a hundred bookmarks) is now empty and one other is missing completely.
In some places I have a 5 levels deep folder structure for my bookmarks, but since the folders missing are from different levels I don't think this is the problem.
The now empty folder contained six or seven other folders, that in turn contained a lot of bookmarks with titles including non-alphanumerical characters. †?|&*()<-/., to be precise. However, if I restore a very old .json (from september 2013) the folders are present and contain the mentioned bookmarks - albeit much fewer, since the file is old. A few other bookmarks still present also contain the mentioned characters, so this is probably not the problem either.
The folder that is completely missing just contained a lot of bookmarks that were to be sorted.
When opening the more recent .json files (I have a whole month of automatic backups to choose from) in the firefox scratchpad it would seem that the bookmarks are missing alltogether, so I suppose that there is not much to do about it (please correct me if I'm wrong), but I definitely want to report the bug.
Is there anything at all to do about it?
    Thanks,
    Hanna

If the bookmarks aren't present in the JSON backup then it is likely that you got a corrupted places.sqlite file at some time that caused the backup not working properly.
Did you try all the backups?
Note that the xxxx part of the bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json file name shows the number of bookmarks in the file.

  • I'm trying to write an Applescript: when I add a file to a folder, I want finder to name it "1" and increment the other files in the folder by 1. i.e. once I drop a new file into the folder, the file originally called "1" will be renamed "2" etc

I'm trying to write an Applescript. I have never used Applescript but my boss has just asked me to write a script so I dutifully nodded and said "Yes Boss"...
The funtionality I need is that I want finder to rename the files in folder when I drop a new file in. When I add the new file (file neame: "1") to a folder, I want to increment the other file names in the folder by 1.
So when I drop a my new "1" file into the folder, the file original file called "1" will be renamed "2", the original file named "2" will be renamed "3" etc
I'm creating a 'stream' of images. When I add a new image i want it to nudge the other images in the folder along.
    Thanks guys!

  • Missing files from /etc/certificates

Hi, I have a certificate in my keychain for which I miss the .cert.pem, chain.pem, concat.pem and key.pem files in /etc/certificates.
This results in a problem in server.app as I can't configure all my web-sites correctly and server.app won't write out the correct config files.
Any idea how I can create the four files?

So, I solve this issue and one more. I really can't believe nor understand why Apple is unable to create a server.app that can handle the simpelst things. What trainees are working on it?
    You need two fixes:
    1. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4539 (OS X Server: Saving a certificate identity to the system keychain does not work with Server services)
The importan part is, that you need (!!) to reboot your machine. Only than the files are generated. I don't understand what's so hard to generate them right when adding the certificate but that's an other story.
If you than try to use your now finally available certificate, you are hit by this problem:
    2. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4266473?start=0&tstart=0 (Strange issue with Dovecot (err 89))
And yes, that's because server.app comments out the SSL stuff in the dovecot config. Which of course makes a lot of sense if you want to use SSL. The bad sideeffect is, that dovecot won't startup with this wrong config.
Enough hours lost by this Apple botch...

So I need to make some modification and additions to virtual host to support svn. The module are running and and I added my needed changes to a <Location "/svn"> block. Everything works great. Until I make any other changes is the Server Admin to the Sites section. It overwrites my custom changes to my 0001any_443svn.mydomain.com.conf. So I tried creating an all new conf file based on the auto generated one. Then removed the auto generated file. Again, it changed my custom file, and renamed it in the 0000_any sequence. Errr.
Is there some other location I can place this custom virtual host file that will not get overwritten by Server Admin?

Don't add your svn virtual host file to /etc/apache2/sites, add it to /etc/apache2, and edit the httpd.conf file to include that virtual host file directly.
