MISSING TEXT/GRAPHICS WHEN CREATING PDF

Hello ...
When I convert FrameMaker files to PDF, text and graphics are missing in the pdf. Sometimes this happens, sometimes not - the pattern seems to be whenever I am working with a large file (1MB or more)or if I have several windows open.
My temporary work-around is to save the document into PDF 2-5 pages at a time ... but with a 100-page document this becomes very tedious and time-consuming.
I have 55GB of free space and 2GB of RAM.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?
I am using Adobe Acrobat 8.0 with Windows XP.

Yes, the graphics are imported by reference.
But when generating a pdf multiple times from the same file - it's not always the same result. The first attempt may result in some graphics and text not appearing (only several pages may be affected). The second attempt will result in different pages being affected.
It's not consistent - which really doesn't make sense.
I have a feeling it's something quirky with my computer - but I wanted to check the forum in case this is a problem with Acrobat 8.0 -before I complain to our IT Dept.

Ability to turn headings into graphics when creating PDFs

I would like the ability to convert the text headings and footers into graphical images whenever I create PDFs.
My reason for this wish is that when you search for a text string in a PDF, it is very annoying when you keep getting hits that occur in headers or footers.

It would be much easier to convert the header and footer into a graphic
yourself. That way you could determine the type of graphic that would be
appropriate for your application---high def raster image, outline text, etc.

Text dropping when creating pdf in acrobat 7 standard

This just started about a week ago. One of our user is adding pages to an existing pdf, using exisitng pdf files and new ones created from word and excel files by printing to the PDF printer. Sometimes it happens right away and sometimes it happens after a few pages are added. letters and numbers just randomly disappear from the pdf. a blank space remains in its place. If you print the document the text is missing from the print out as well. She says she hasn't done anything new or changed any settings. It just started happeneing and it happens on random files as well. I updated her to 7.1 but no deal. I tried removing it from her system and reinstalling, still hainv ghte problem. It happens on other machines as well so I think that rules out something on her machine. I've been researching it to find an answer but nothing seems to work.
I tried the suggestion of delteting the fntcache.dat file and many other things. Its causing issues in her department since she can't get this document finished. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have this same problem. I have tried with both embedded fonts and not; I get no errors.
I've tried increasing virtual memory, playing with PDF setting compatibility (6.0 to 5.0), changing my dpi settings... I've tried printing to .ps or saving directly as PDF. Nothing seems to work.
Note that in one document, I was able to solve this problem by removing and replacing an index marker, but in the document exhibiting this behavior now, there is no offending index marker.
It starts in the table of contents and drops text throughout the book.
I am using:
Acrobat Distiller 7.0
Framemaker 7.0

Error message: Helvetica Medium outline font missing when creating PDF's. Where can I downlaod it and why is it suddenly happening?

OS? Version of ID?
This means that either you have an extra Helvetica Medium font installed and it's interfering with ID finding the T1 version, or the T1 version is damaged. I found this really old thread that explains it fairly well: http://www.asadesigner.com/22-indesign/2d812de56777cc90.htm
The good news is that it's probably only affecting the page information marks.

How can i set Color Conversion field in Export to PDF dialog to No Color Conversion when creating PDF Export preset? i have done a bit of searching and have found where it has been recommended to set effective pdf destination profile to use no profile but it doesn't seem to be producting the expected results.

1. Please try updating the Acrobat to 10.1.10 and then check the issue.
2. Go to Settings -> Font Locations. You'll see a list of sources that Distiller gets its fonts from. Make sure that the paths actually exist, delete them if they don't.
3. Try with different joboptions.

Try to do it from Word using the ribbon.

Export or "Save As" PDF - missing shapes in final created PDF

I am using Illustrator CS5.
I created a brochure with some images, shapes and text with minimal effects (some drop shadow).
When I export or do a "save as" pdf, four of my shapes do not appear in the created pdf.
What type of reasons would create missing vector graphic shapes?
Do I need to flatten my work? If so, what is the best method for this?
Any guidance would be appreciated.

I figured it out.
There was a setting in my pdf that had adobe layers on. I turned it off.
All good now!

Corrupt image formatting when creating pdf from embedded visio image in MS word

Hello, Using Adobe Acrobat 9 standard and trying to create a PDF file from an MS word (version 2003) document. PDF file created is fine except for an image (embedded visio diagram imported into word). When created in PDF, the image is missing many of the diagram labels, and other text boxes are in the wrong font and wrong location. I don't know if it's my Adobe Acrobat or MS Word settings that need to be updated.

the problem is still present. My system:Windows 7 32-Bit Prof, MS Office 2010 Prof, Acrobat X Pro 10.1.1, Vision 2010 Prof, all updates installed.
Problem #1: Even the latest Acrobat X 10.1.1 version causes Visio 2010 to start with error messages, origin: the Acrobat Add-In. Therefore I de-activated the Acrobat Add-In, again, as in the past.
As I design grafics with Visio 2010, I mark them in the active Visio window, copy the marked parts and then insert them into my Word-Document. So far, so good and as I want it.
The (still present) problem: I can produce a PDF file using the "save as Adobe PDF", but the Visio drawing is incomplete and corrupt. E.g. arrows as line endings have disappeared.
PS: But using Adobes PDF printer sets the embedded Visio drawing correctly! But using the printer one looses some features of the "save as Adobe PDF" command.

Frame hangs when creating PDF

I'm running Frame 8, unstructured, on Vista. Also running Distiller 8.
I have a book file and was creating individual PDFs of the chapters doing Save As PDF on each chapter. After three weeks of doing this Frame starts to hang when creating the PDFs. Nothing different in the files, just some editing of commas, mispellings etc. Sometimes just repaginating for page numbers. I noticed, strangely, that I first had to delete the old PDF, it wasn't overwritinng. Then that started hanging so I was changing the name of the file. Then changing the name wasn't working.
Frame was opening Distiller but it wasn't doing anything else. At some point it doesn't even open Distiller. Just hangs Frame. Doesn't matter if I reboot, it has no affect.
Then, doing absolutely nothing, it starts working again ... for a while. There's nothing intricate about these files. They're pretty vanilla. Lots of text, a handful of tables (or not) and some graphics in eps or tif format.
What is going on here?

From everything I have read, it is better to Print to a PDF than to use Save As....and also set your default printer to pdf. Although some I have read use the Save As PDF, most don't agree. You can give it a shot anyway....

White boarders around artboard when creating pdf in CS4

Hi,
have been trying to find solution for this issue for 4 hours now and im loosing my mind:)) ... so decided to ask some help from you guys.
Problem: im trying to create pdf file with black background in Illustrator cs4 and white thin boarders keep appearing to the right and bottom of the page. I have streched the background image so that its bigger than the artboard but white lines are still there when pdf is opened?!? I guess there is extremeley easy solution for this (kind a "you forgot to tick the box from x menu") but i just cant figure out .... so all the help is most wellcome!!!

@ Jacob --- you're half correct, in that it's a small bug, or smoothing artifact in the Preview application from Apple.
White boarders go away when you uncheck "Smooth text and line art" in Preview Preferences, under the PDF tab. Since that makes everything very pixelated, I don't recommend keeping that setting on.
Instead, consider installing Adobe Reader or using Acrobat Pro, where incidentily, the very same phenomonen can occur. In Acrobat Pro, you can also toggle "Smoothing" in the Preferences, Page Display dialog.
TIP: Preview works best with RGB PDFs, whereas if you are doing print production work, I would suggest using either Acrobat Reader, or Pro which is my preference because of the soft-proofing and print production tools.

XMP Metadata Error when creating PDF/A-1b

I just started using Adobe Acrobat X for Mac to create PDF/A-1b documents from scanned TIFs. I created a script in the Action Wizard to 1) Combine Files into a Single PDF; 2)Downsample image resolution to 150 ppi (bitmaps to 300 ppi); 3) Recognize Text;4) Pause to find all suspects and make corrections to incorrect OCR; 5) Convertto PDF/A-1b (sRGB); and 6) Verify compliance with PDF/A-1b.
When I use the Action Wizard to to execute the script above I receive an error message stating "Metadata does not conform to XMP." However, when I execute each of the actions manually I do not receive the XMP metadata error. It takes a long time to execute each action manually, so I am hoping there is some way to make this full script work in the Action Wizard.
I have an open case with Adobe regarding this issue, but so far no solutions.

I do not receive an error when the "Verify compliance with PDF/A-1b" action is removed from the script. Does this action have to be performed separately to avoid the XMP metadata error?

TOC not updating when creating PDF from Robo9

I have not really created PDFs from Robo before, so I might be missing something basic. I am trying to create Word and PDF documents from my Robo9 project. My problem is that some of my topics are not being generated, in either the Word output or the PDF output. The topics are indeed part of the TOC in the Robo project, but they are not part of the TOC in the Word and PDF output. The strange thing is, all of the TOC books make the conversion, but the one book I am having the issue with includes one topic, but all of the other topics in that book do not get converted. I tried recreating the TOC, and it still does the same thing. It's almost like the printed documentation generation is ignoring any new changes to the TOC, as it's the same every time no matter what I change. I tried making some changes to topics that are generated, and I can indeed see the changes in the printed output docs.
Anything glaring I am missing, or should try? Thanks.

Likely a common misunderstanding.
The first time you create printed documentation, the topics are based on the TOC. Thereafter there is no link.
When you add new topics to the project, they are not automatically in any of the TOCs. You have to add them to each TOC. It's the same with print, you have to add them in the print layout.
Easiest way is to simply use the double left chevrons to remove the topics in the print layout and then use the double right chevron to back in, the difference being it will add all the topics in the TOC and as you added the new topics there, they will be in the print layout.

Images changed to negatives when creating PDF

I'm using Creative Suite 4, OSX 10.5. I'm finding that on occasion, images in my documents are changed to negatives when I'm creating PDF files. I can submit more details here, but I thought I'd check quickly to see if there is an obvious answer that I may have missed.

Sounds like it might be an inversion caused by Windows RGB to Mac RGB. I have a haxie called Flip4Mac which inverts windows stuff to be displayed on my Mac.

Transfer text of VBKD-BSTKD_E into a item text category when creating order

when creating an order a text should be entered manually in the field 'VBKD-BSTKD_E' . Because the order is a third-party-order and we want to have this information of field 'VBKD-BSTKD_E' also in the MM-purchase requisition to this order, the manual entered text of 'VBKD-BSTKD_E' should be transfered into a special item-text-category in the sales order (We made already the customizing that this special item-text-category goes automatically into the MM-purchase requisition when saving the SD-order). Now we have tried already to solve this issue with the function module 'change_text' and 'create_text' in the SD-user-Exits (1. Try: userexit_move_field_to_vbap and 2.Try: ZXVVAU05). We were able to change or create the text with these function modules but, although we used afterwards additionaly function module 'Save_text' to save the text, the text wasn't saved by the system.
Has anybody an idea how this could work?

Read the header lever text using READ_TEXT, and use the SAVE_TEXT to save the text at the item level. Obviously you have to change the TDOBJECT field before saving it.
