Missing Thread Record and Invalid Extent entry when booting

Hi all,
When I boot up my PowerBook G4 it freezes. When I boot into single user mode and run fsck -fy I get the following messages:
** /dev/rdisk0s3
** Root file system
** Checking HFS Plus volume
** Checking Extents Overflow file.
** Checking Catalog file.
Missing thread record (id = 72)
Invalid extent entry
(4, 14531)
** Volume check failed.
I do not have Disk Warrior nor the Apple disks with me. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Navigating my disk in single user mode seems to have all my directories etc.
Thanks!

I am trying to back up my data now. I only have my FAT32 formated iPod with me and I'm trying to mount it to backup my photos before I reinstall. Unfortunately I do not see my iPod popping up in /dev at all so I cannot even mount it.
It's a USB connection so I suspect that single user mode doesn't pick it up... Any advice on how to mount a filesystem from my iPod in single user mode is much appreciated.
Thanks.

You've booted from your OS installer disk, ran Repair Disk from Disk Utility? If so then you need a stronger disk repair utility like DiskWarrier to rebuild the directory.
    BTW, update your profile information.

  • Disk Utility and fsck report 'missing thread records' and can't repair.

    Hello,
What first made me realise there was a problem with my iMac was that when I tried to update a application it failed. I then manually download the .dmg of the update and tried replaced the app (Transmission 1.82 being that app in question). This failed, OS X claiming that it could not replace the older version (1.81). I then tried copying the file to the desktop where OS X claimed that there was already a copy of the application and so left a corrupted file on my desktop. This also happened when i attempted to move and copy a couple of pages documents and movie files around. I decided the best thing to do at this point was to reboot my computer; OS X decided it needed to install a couple of security updates at this point. This installation failed.
My iMac booted up, but only after a progress bar has appeared under the Apple logo and spinner and has done its thing (From what I've read this means that OS X is trying its best to resolve some sort of errors). This happens upon every boot.
This made me think that something must be going on with the file system of my Mac so I ran all the tests in Disk Utility. Permissions repair ran fine and fixed a few issues, but when I verified the disk this is what it reported:
    "Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
Missing thread record (id = 2045563)
Missing thread record (id = 2096282)
    Keys out of order
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
I booted up from the DVD and tried to repair; this failed. Next I tried using fsck in single user mode; this also failed. Upon rebooting again and waiting for the progress bar to fill I was able to move files around and update Transmission without issue. Disk Utility still reports the same error.
If I boot into Windows Vista everything works perfectly; as of yet I haven't got around to installing the new Boot Camp update for Windows 7 support incase that changes anything. When running the diagnostic tool on the Windows Vista DVD it reports that everything is fine for Windows.
I really am at a loss for what to do next. All my data is backed up by Time Machine onto a Time Capsule as well as manually onto a FW external. I also made a clone of the Windows partition using the free app Winclone. Does anyone know anything I can do to fix this problem?
    Thanks so much,
    Sam.

I have been experiencing exactly the same problem here with my MacPro. Apple replaced the hard disk because it was reporting bad sectors. However even with the replacement hard disk I'm experiencing the "missing thread" issue again. I'm guessing its either a software issue that keeps recurring or a fundamental hardware issue. Is the disk controller part of the hard disk or the motherboard? I've never had hard disk problems like this before.

  • What is a missing thread record (id = 3339624) and what can I do about it?

I was trying to updat my IMac to snow leopard and got an error during the process. I restarted my computer on the HD that I was trying to update and I get the boot screen and then it turns off. I then got it to boot on the SL disk and it got me to the repair prompt and the DU. When I verify the HD I get missing thread record (id = 3339624) and It grays out the HD. After restarting and getting back to the DU I can see it again and all my files on it. I no longer care about updating I just want to be back to normal. I don't have any time machean backups and I am very worried. It makes it even worse being able to see my files but not be able to get to them.

That error message means that Disk Utility can't reconcile the catalog entry for a file and it's location on the hard drive. That could mean a problem with the file or a problem with the catalog.
Verifying the hard drive doesn't fix anything, it just reports it's status. You need to boot to either your Leopard or Snow Leopard DVD, bring up Disk Utility, and repair the hard drive. If Disk Utility gives a failure on exit message or tells you it can't repair the hard drive, then you'll need to use a program like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, with Disk Warrior being the program most people use. That should be able to fix the problem. Disk Warrior is available from http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
If you started a major operating system upgrade without having a backup, you're setting yourself up for failure should a problem arise, but you probably know that by now.

  • Invalid Extent Entry error

I have an iBook 9.2.2 and am getting an error message "Problem: Invalid extent entry, 44165, 4075" when running Disk First Aid. It says Disk First Aid cannot repair this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to repair this problem? THis is a laptop for special needs children.

    Welcome to Apple discussions!
The directory on the Hard drive has been corrupted. The "index" of what files are where is out of whack, and there is no way to repair it that is completely risk-free. You will need to take one of two approaches:
    1) use an Industrial strength Disk- or File- Repair Utility. Popular ones include alsoft Disk Warrior and Tech Tools (now supplied by Apple when you have an Applecare contract). DO NOT INSTALL these programs until the damage is completely fixed -- Get the CD version and boot from the CD, do the Repair, check again with Disk First Aid, THEN they can be installed, if you wish.
Norton Utilities for Mac has repeatedly failed Mac users by not keeping their software appropriately upgraded to match the Mac Operating System. Using the wrong version can wipe out your Hard Drive.
If you are working within a School System, the school's Tech Support should have a plan and the necessary Utilities and know-how to address these sorts of problems. When you have a large number of computers to look after, these problems come up regularly in Macs and PCs.
    -OR-
    2) Back up the files you can still read and re-initialize the Hard drive.

  • Time machine restore: missing thread record

    Hello everyone,
I recently upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I did a clean install. I have been backing up with Time Machine to my Lacie Cloudbox NAS. My NAS requires authentication.
I am unable to restore my files. I have tried it during installation and with Migration Assistant. I can see my .sparsebundle through Finder and mount it (and see an inprogress with loads of folders inside of it). I am unable to copy the files directly to my desktop because of an permission warning.
From Windows I can see loads of files inside the bands-folder. They are all equal in size. I found a clue that maybe the most recent ones are corrupt, so I moved two days worth of them out from sparsebundle.
Disk utility says the drive needs to be repaired. I tried this, and got loads of errors. I there are so many of these that I have shortened the list below a lot. Please help me, all my valuable files are inside the .sparsebundle (510 gigs). I don't care about automation, I just want them out.

The backup disk image is corrupt. You might be able to repair it by holding down the option key and selecting Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu. But that may also result in a total loss of all backup data. Backing up to a third-party NAS is unsupported by Apple and unsafe. You should back up to a locally-attached storage device.

    1derfullymad,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I am surprised that Diskwarrior was not able to take care of this problem, but Handling "overlapped extent allocation" errors reported by Disk Utility or fsck may provide the ultimate solution for you.
Make sure to use Disk Utility to check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drive. If you get a good report the drive should be OK.
This problem is a characteristic of a full Hard Drive. If that describes your Hard Drive, Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk, by Dr. Smoke may prove to be helpful.

  • 'fsck -fy' yields "invalid extent entry, invalid node structure"

    Hello all,
System seems unstable. Many different apps, including System Preferences, crash on launch.
In Single-User mode (Command-S at boot), ran 'fsck -fy' (multiple times) and the receive the following errors that cannot be repaired:
    Invalid extent entry
    Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed
What options do I have to fix this? No claims by Alsoft (or other disk-fixing utilities I know of) that DiskWarrior works on Intel-based Macs to resolve an issue such as this. Are there really no disk-fixing tools for Intel Macs?
Is the only option to format and reinstall and if so do I have to "zero all data"? And if I have to zero all data, how long will it take?
    Thanks for any insight.

I tried another suggestion I got from the EIMS-L list which was to use another Mac to repair the MBP in FireWire target disk mode. I did that and was able to run Disk Utility from my other Mac (1.33GHz PowerBook G4) but it reported same errors. On the other Mac I tried to run DiskWarrior 3.0.3 (latest) but it failed to "see" the MBP's disk even though it was mounted and Disk Utility saw it.
So I will probably reformat and reinstall everything!
    Thanks for your suggestions...

  • Kernel Panic (Invalid extent entry)

While trying to run CampTune to expand my Windows partition, I encountered an error. With each OS X reboot attempt, I get a Kernel Panic. Windows partition was not affected. I attempted to repair the disc using the install disc, but initially was getting "no valid packages,"message, but now it says "Invalid extent entry." Fortunately everything was backed up days ago in TM. I first tried an Archive and Install, but that failed. Now as I attempt to re-install Leopard, it's saying that the destination disc needs to be erased.
Re: "no valid packages" "Invalid extent entry" messages; will a clean install fix the problem?

You would need to use Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory in order to fix the error. Erasing the drive and reinstalling OS X should also fix the problem.
"No valid packages" occurs if the /Library/Receipts/ folder or its contents is deleted or corrupted.
Using third-party software to alter the Windows partition will result in the partition no longer being manageable by Boot Camp Assistant. This is not advisable because if you later decide to remove the Windows partition you will have to repartition and reformat the entire hard drive.

  • Missing "Add Records" and "Refresh Records" options for data sets post domain re-import

We recently had to re-install the Endeca server and as part of which had to export and re-import the data domains. Everything went fine except for the fact that newly re-imported data sets showcase just the "Manage Attributes" and the "Delete Data Set" options for an administrator login in. The previously available options to "Add Records" and "Refresh Records" beyond manage attributes/Delete Data Set are missing.
Thoughts? Is there a security setting to enable these?

So are you talking about the Add Records and Reload Records options for a data set in Studio?
There are no separate security settings for these options. If a user is an application administrator (is able to edit the application), then they should have access to these options.
The options are only available for data domains created using the Provisioning Service (created by uploading a file or from the JDBC or BI Server data source from the Data Source Library).
I don't know if the process of exporting and re-importing the data domains (not sure how you did that) could somehow cause the data sets to no longer know that they were created by the Provisioning Service, in which case those options would not be enabled.

  • Disc Utility says it fixed the invalid extent entry but it lied!

    Hi guys and gals
Just wondering if anyone else came up with this problem:
My powermac G4 running OS 10.2 only starts up to a blue screen and nothing else. I ran Disc Utility first aid on it and it said it had an "invaild extent entry" which it fixed, but the problem is still there.
I ran Nortons Disc Doctor, which never completely finished but freezes about 3/4 of the way through. Can't run Speed Disc because the drive won't mount.
Ran to the Disc Warrior which did fix some bad directories, but then froze at the "Building Report" stage.
Again I may have to suck it up and erase and reformat the drive, but I didn't back up lately (I know I know bad girl) and again there are some important files that I need to get to.
Any help would be much appriciated!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Problem with Reports Server and invalid DB packages when release code

    Hello,
I'm not certain that this is a Reports issue or not, but wondered if anyone had encountered similar. We've recently upgraded from Forms and Reports 6i to 10.1.2.0.2. A couple of times now, after doing a release of code to our environment, we find that the next request to the Reports Server generates a 'existing state of packages has been discarded' error. Submitting exactly the same report request a second and subsequent times works fine.
However, we always make sure we recompile all invalid packages after a code release; and our Forms front-end doesn't encounter any errors like this. Is there some possible issue with using existing Reports engines to run reports after a code release - should we be bouncing the Reports server..?
    Thanks,
    James

    I don't know.
    Is it software related.
this is very hard to say. it could be software related but it could be hardware related too.
How can I stop it happening again.
you can't really. verify your hard drive periodically. if this keeps happening you'll need to reformat the drive. if it keeps happening after that it's likely hardware related and you should replace the drive.
This has never happened on any of my other macs. Not on the G4 ibook I am using now nor the imacs I have had!
