Mixed network

Hello
I wonder if the good and the great here would mind giving a little bit of advice.
Where is it at when it comes to NAS or shared drives on a mixed network. At home we have PCs mostly but I have just bought a new MBP which I think is fantastic.
I would like to use Time Machine to back it up and ideally do that over WiFi to a NAS or cheap server. I know that I have to use a Mac formatted drive to use Time Machine but is there any way to set this up so that PCs can use the NAS.
Alternatively is there a way to let the PCs see a folder on my MBP and back up to that and then from the MBP to a NAS.
Finally any suggestions of a suitable NAS. I want it headless and able to connect over WiFi because I want to hide it away in a loft or something to avoid being robbed.
Thanks
R

As I suggested there are some NAS systems compatible with AFP shares that could work for you, but not with TM. There are many excellent backup utility options that work across networks:
Backup Software Recommendations
My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
10. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
11. Apple Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility.

  • Question about Mac OS X Sever on a mixed network...

We're looking to upgrade our network, specifically in security, and are considering using Mac OS X Server to run the Open Directory and Network Authentication over a mixed network of mainly Windows XP machines, a few Macs running Tiger and a couple of Ubuntu Machines and File Servers.
I was wondering if anyone here had some experience with running Mac OS X Server as the Open Directory Master on a mixed network?
There are several features of OS Server that I was wondering if they work on other client OS, specifically Windows...
    • Can I restrict Windows machines to not be able to burn from their optical drives?
    • Can I restrict Windows machines to only be able to mount external disks as read-only?
    • Can I use the printing restrictions on Windows machines?
    • Can I use the password perimeters, such as length, character content, password expire and change password on first login on Windows machines?
It would be helpful to know what real-world experience people have had with this.
    thanks in advance...

From what I was reading none of these services are planned for the new OS.
    For printer restrictions, you can.
You might want to use the Mac OS X server for managing your clients with any OS, but to setup restrictions you could use a third party utility..

  • Leopard, Linux and Windows mixed networks

Oh oh so funny. I installed Leopard on my mac. I have a mixed network, with PCs, Macs and Linux machines.
I discovered that Leopard networking is a nightmare, something back like Windows 95. Is not a joke!
After installing with an upgrade from 10.4.10, all the Windows machines of my network disappeared. )-: . No way to see in the finder. But ok, using the terminal I can manage to use. But...
My real problem started when I tried to reconnect the drives from the Linux machines. The new networking act like Windows, Iit doesn't allow me to choice different passwords and usernames from each drives in the same server. Ok, I say myself "for the moment, I mount one volume, I use it, then I unmount, I mount another volume etcetera". Not so useful, but manageable. And here the second nightmare begin: Finder isn't able to disconnect my disk! I use the eject button, or the "disconnect" button and the disk remain mounted. I rebooted the machine. Same, the disk is mounted. I restarted both mac and linux machine. Same, it reconnect the drive )-: . So I'm locked to one drive of my server and I can't do nothing else.
If someone with a mixed network is experimenting the same issues, please help!
    Thanks a lot!
P.S. I'm really disappointed. Before making jokes (with the PCs of the network displayed with the blue screen of death icon) they must use the time to test their system... and hey, please don't display the BSOD icon when the machines connected to the network are Linux computers (-: !!!

Read the hint is this blog about the Mac to Linux SAMBA fix.
Did you go to System Preferences->Sharing pane and turn on File sharing on (hit the 'Advanced' button to choose the kind of sharing protocols)?
Also do mix and matching from the articles File Sharing With OS X 10.5 - Introduction to File Sharing With Your Mac (for XP sharing) & File Sharing With Snow Leopard: Sharing OS X 10.6 Files With Windows 7 (for 10.6.x sharing). Mixing these two articles can help you share as long as you are in the same IP subnet.

  • Getting Windows PC to see wireless Airport Express printer in mixed network

I have a wireless network that has been working well. Base station is a SMC wireless router with two Macs connected via Ethernet, a MacBook and a Dell Windows XP joining in wirelessly. No problems. I recently added a Canon Pixma i4200 connected to an Airport Express in client mode. I set up the Airport Express via the MacBook and have no problem printing wireless to the Canon from the MacBook.
The question is how to set up the Dell Windows XP system to see the Canon printer? We tried installing the Canon print driver, but it really wants the printer to be plugged into the PC and won't complete the driver installation. We'll go ahead and plug it in for the setup I guess and then disconnect it. Since I already configured the Airport Express via the MacBook, I didn't want to try to set it up via the Dell PC, but is that likely to help?
This network is such a mixed bag, I think I'm lucky to have everything working as well as it does. Happy to be able to print wirelessly to the new Canon from the MacBook, but my wife wants to be able to print to this printer from her Dell upstairs. The nice feature of the Canon is that it prints duplex.
    thanks for any help

         d) Air Play & Mirroring with iPhone/iPad works
    2) Win 7 Pro PC with iTunes and Apple TV both on wired Ethernet connected to same Router.
         a) Apple TV is able to detect and play all media from iTunes Library on Win 7 Pro PC
        b) Remote App does not work
         c) Air Play & Mirroring does not work
         d) Apple TV is unable to connect to iTunes Store
I have tried the usual power off ALL devices for some time and restart. Nothing seems to make Apple TV connect to iTunes Store while on wired ethernet.
    Any help/tips woud be appreciated.
PS: Mixed mode does not work for me too.

  • Question on WRT310N mixed network use

How well does the WRT310N work in a mixed use network? I am considering switching to this router as my current router(Nextgear Rangemax) will only work consistently if run at G speeds, not exactly what I was looking for when I spent the money for a fast wireless network. Will the WRT310N let my desktop maintain N connection speeds if one of the laptops in the house connects at G speeds? I really don't want to spend more money expirementing as this will be my third router that I have tried.

Ok...let me try to explain this another way. I have one computer wired to the router, my desktop in the basement using an N card, and a laptop someplace else in the housewith a G adapter. If set to run at N speeds, the router will drop to 1mbps if a G computer logs onto the network. If a computer with a non-Netgear adapter logs onto the network, it drops in speed as well. So my question is as follows, how does the WRT310N work in a mixed use network? I do understand that you need an N adapter to get N speeds with a N router.

  • WRT120N - how to proper set mixed network at home

    Hi,
I have bought WRT120N by linksys because I wanted to use maximum speed of line.
My answer is how do I need to set up my router to get max what I could ?
When I put ethernet cable directly to my PC speedmeter is showing me 65-70 MBit bandwith rate whereas on WIFI connection 15-20 MBits.
I got Atheros 9285 wifi adapter in my desktop. It is n capable, but in settings there are only 2 Wireless mode selection options to set:  802.11b/g and AUTO. It`s set to AUTO by default.
Here are my settings of router:
    Network Mode: mixed
Channel width: Auto (20 or 40MHz)
In advanced wireless settings is everything set to auto.
I tried to set N transmission rate to one of those listed and disable frame bursting but it didn`t have any effect.
I was changing channels and channel width as well but with no effect.
Is here anybody who has simmilar issue than me ? I appreciate any help.

Do not chnage the N-Transmission rate because it wiil then create some problem while connecting the b/g devices..Change the Channel Width to 40MHz,Wide Channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz..Under the Advance Wireless Settings..Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Under the Security tab, uncheck "Filter Anonymous Internet Requests" and click on save settings..
Now,power cycle the entire network and check...

  • Account-Setup for mixed network

    Happy New Year to everybody!
Here's my problem: We have a mixed environment with lots of Wiindows and some Macs (ca. 30). We run a OS X server 10.3.9. All windows-machine got their login on the server but store the data locally.
For the macs we haven't found a way of making them login to the network everytime they log in locally and still have them keep their data locally.
We figured out it might be best to setup mobile accounts, but it seems as if we're too stupid to do so...
We followed step-by-step the setup proposed in the Mac OS X Server-Handbook, but apparently we're missing a point there.
When I log in a supposedly mobile account on a local machine it should create a new mobile account. But it doesn't. It just doesn't recognize the username and shakes desperately...
What must we change in order to make the local machine check on the server, whether this user is a mobile account or not?
Or does anyone have a better solution to solve this problem?
    All suggestions are gladly welcome!!!
    Thank you in advance

  • .exe files appearing on MAC in mixed network environment

I am working in a mixed PC/Mac network environment. Soon after plugging the MAC into the network, I started noticing '.exe' file appearing on my MAC.
Almost every folder on the HD now has a .exe file with the same name inside it. For example the Libray folder has a file called "Library.exe" in it now.
I have one folder on the MAC shared, and mapped as a network drive on a PC. The PC's anti-virus software keeps flagging a virus on the folder. However, I am running Intego's anti-virus on the MAC and it does not find anything.
    Anyone have any ideas here?

Finally figured it out... PC Network volume (shared folder) had the W32.rontokbro@mm virus. EXE file appeared anytime the PC connected to the MAC. Reformatted the PC and deleted all of the EXE files from the MAC and now I have no troubles.

  • Sharing a disk on a mixed network

I'm contemplating getting an Airport Extreme N in larger part so that I can share a hard drive over my network. The network is mixed. There are two PCs, one which has a wireless card, probably 802.11g and one that's wired, two Macs that will ony support 802.11g, one Mac that is hard wired to the network and one Mac that will support 802.11n.
So, my question, which was not answered by any of the support documents I located is Will I be able to share a hard disk in this kind of set up?
I believe that my household (yeah, this is my house) now has a greater number of computers than people.

Based on your hardware descriptions, the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) should be able to accomodate all of your equipment. It's three LAN ports would be used for the wired PC & Mac (with one left over), and it's wireless, running in 802.11n (b/g-compatible mode) should handle the mix of wireless clients. The one thing to note for wireless to operate at pure 802.11n speeds, ALL wireless devices must be 802.11n.
Similiarly, both Windows & Macs can access USB-attached hard drives that are formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305038 & http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/sharing.html)

  • Mac painfully slow over mixed network SMB/CIFS

I am using a Mac mini over a mixed office network. Several network operations are painfully slow. I posted a previous topic when I was using my G5 over the same network. Nothing has been resolved. G5, Mac mini or any Mac are slow over the network.
-photo previews take at least 2 minutes each to view while on a PC the whole drive of previews are instantly seen.
    - Entourage common network calendar takes 5-10 minutes to view/update while the same common calender on a PC takes a few short seconds.
    - Browsing folders on network drives is slow.
    - Transfering files is slow
Basically any work done over the network from the Mac is tediously slow. Burning CD's and hand carry the files to other offices would be faster. The PC's instead all work fine over the network.

This looks very interesting and worth looking into. I've got the info in the hands of our net administrator.
I am making progress. I switched the mac mini from ethernet to airport. That has helped dramatically. A folder of 175 mb that was going to take hours and hours to copy to my local drive (I finally gave up) only took about 2-3 minutes over wireless. Previews of photos now happen in a few short seconds. The Entourage common calendar still takes a while to upload but that's probably an Entourage issue.
Our network administrator is going to string new cable to my office and we'll check the switching as well.
Thanks everyone for your continued help as we solve this issue and rescue the Mac's reputation in a windows environment.
This sounds alot like a duplexing issue, whereby
your macs are connecting eventually to a switch, that
isn't properly auto-negotiating your ethernet speed.
You can try going into the Network preferences and
forcing your mac to either 100 full duplex or 100
half duplex and do some testing. Some Bay
Network and Cisco switches must be set (if they are
managed switches) for fastpath operation where they
will autonegotiate better with equipment like our
Broadcom manufactured network interface cards. I
had the same issue at home with a Netgear switch, I
replaced it with a Dell gigabit switch and the
    problem went away.

  • Best new MAC-PC Mixed Network

My wife, the artist, wants to get a new iMac and share a network with my WinXP PCs. TC might be a nice solution. However, from what I read, there seems to be doubt about some connections. We want to follow the Apple model and can wait until such a model is published or otherwise blessed by the mfg. It is my hope that this thread will follow developments in that direction.
    Requirements:
    1. Reliable home air network mixed Mac X, & PC WinXP Desktop & Laptop.
    2. Shared disc with access from both systems.
    3. Backup for both systems that is air connected in a secure place.
    Solution?:
    1. TC with internal disc shared and USB attached printer shared.
    2. Client TC with internal TM disc for Mac backup and USB attached disc for PC backup.

    So, this is my network:
Two notebooks on Vista connecting with WiFi and one desktop computer with wired connection.
Router: Apple airport extreme, bought a week ago.
    MFP Canon Pixma MP160
Storage: external HDD in a cas
MFP nad HDD connected to AE through USB hub.
result: everything is working perfectly (with printing service only)
If I understood you correctly you wish to add two external hdd.
You can try to attach two NAS device to AE through LAN and that should work.
AE is a great router for those who wish to have reliable network without much to think about it.If you wish to really control your network I would go with D-Link dir-655 or the upcoming dir-855 (works on dual band).
If you ask why did I bought it then, the answer is: for a little more money I got printer server built in AE (example, AE is 179 euro and dir-655+printer server is around 250 euro, also d-link built in USB is useless.

  • Scanner for mixed network

Does anyone have a suggestion for a (network?) scanner that will allow both Windows and Mac machines to use the scanner over a network?
Or, stated another way, we have an office environment with both Windows and Mac machines and we are hoping to find a scanner that we can either plug into one computer and share or plug into our network and access over IP or the like.
I can find several solutions for a Windows only environment- is this a huge hole in the idea of using Mac's in an office situation?
    Thanks,
    Jared

A number of office-ranger copier MFD's have the ability to scan to a shared folder across the network using SMB or FTP as a protocol. This protocol support allows you to configure shared folders on an individuals Mac or PC and 'push' scan a document directly to the computer as an image (such as TIFF or JPEG) or text (PDF using built-in OCR). This function of pushing gets around the limitation of finding a pull scanner that has Mac software. Also, being networked, it does not have to rely on the sharing device being turned on.
We have a number of Canon imageRUNNER's configured to do exactly this, although the majority of the office uses Mac. The SMB share path to the users shared folder on their Mac is saved into the copier's address book and all the user has to do is select the address after loading the documents into the feeder. The machine has built-in OCR so if they select PDF, the copier does a reasonably good job of converting the scanned image into a search-able text PDF.
On the Canon's this function is called Universal Send. It is most likely called something else on other brands. But the term 'push scanning to SMB' would mean something to any sales rep flogging an office product.
If you didn't want to get a copier-based product there are dedicated office scanners that provide the same feature. Again, you just need to look for a device that support push scanning via SMB or FTP.

  • Using Pages on a mixed network

    Hi -
I have about 250 networked accounts on a Snow Leopard server.
Pages and all of iWork is fine, works well. That is, until Pages 4.03 has been used on a workstation with Mountain Lion.
Thereafter, on OS 10.6.6 workstations, Pages 4.03 cannot open new or existing documents.
Also, the user's Library folder is rendered permanently invisible on all OSs.
    Any ideas to help anyone?
    J

On Lion an Mountain Lion the user Library is hidden. In Finder click on the Go men while holding down the option key and you get a Library option.
Read up on what is new in Lion and Mountain Lion. There many new features.

  • Best Configuration for Mixed Network

How critical is the choice of which machine is Controller?
    Our setup is:
    • G5 2GHz (Dual)
    • G4 733MHz
    • PB 1.25GHz
    • Mini 1.5GHz
The G5 will be the only client, because that’s where the editing is done. Every computer, including the G5 will be a service node. The question is, where is the controller best run? On the G5? Or on one of the other service nodes? If one of the others, which is the likely candidate?
    G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.5GB RAM
    G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.5GB RAM
    G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.5GB RAM

Should they be running on the same channel (as with the "Extend" option previously? Or just both on Automatic channels?
I would recommend the Automatic setting on both devices because this will allow each router to scan and choose an open channel automatically. If  you want to set the channels manually, keep them separated by at least 4-5 channels. You would not want to ever use the same channel for both devices in this type of "roaming" setup.
Is there a way to limit bandwidth per device (or action) so that it doesn't monopolize the network and keep other devices from using it?
Nothing that I am aware of. It sounds like  you have some young users who are likely visiting Bit Torrent sites, which will really gobble up the bandwidth with big, heavy downloads. The Time Machine has to back up the same files again when it makes the next pass, so that clogs things up again.
Backups would go 3-5 times faster, on average, if the computer(s) could connect using Ethernet, but I understand that wires are not cool with the younger crowd.
should BOTH the TC and AE be set up in Bridge mode?
The AirPort Extreme should be set up in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule...it depends. If the TC is connected to a simple cable modem...then the correct setting for Connection Sharing would be "Share a public IP address" on the TC. That is because a simple modem has only 1 IP address to deliver. The TC takes that address and "shares" it with other devices by setting up a local network for all your other devices.
If the TC is connected to a gateway....a combination modem/router in the same box that usually has 3-4 Ethernet ports on the device....then that device would be considered the main router on the network and the TC would be  configured in Bridge Mode in that case to function correctly on the network.
