Mixed Page Layout and Word Processing Modes

Hi Everyone, I find myself increasingly using Pages 09 in word processing mode then creating a new document in Page layout mode to create a front cover for that document.
Is it possible to combine the two modes and therefore having only one file to deal with.
Thanks in advance

There is no background in Page Layout mode, just stacked objects, repeated over and over to make the document grow fat beyond belief.
Wrong! The picture which is stored in the captured page is not repeated over and over in the document.
It is stored only once exactly as a background image.
In *Page layout mode* facing pages is broken, all that switches from left to right is the footer and header.
Perfectly normal behavior.
It's the same in Word processing format.
The setting of margins for facing pages apply to three items:
main text layer
header
footer
It doesn't apply to floating items.
In Layout document there is no main text layer so the margins apply logically only to header and feater.
So the truth is that nothing is broken.
It just don't behave the way you wrongly assumed.

  • Can I mix Pages page layout and word processing together in one document?

Hello there ! I am quite new to Pages and I am desperate to learn as i want to get rid of everything being Microsoft
As you all know when you open Pages you can choose between page layout and word processing !
the thing is i thought that after using a page layout you could just go with word processing easily... well no, you can't, but i'm sure i'm missing something...
For exemple i really like the catalogue brochure and it would be perfect for me to start a project... but after a few pages, i can just add blank pages and if i want to type text, i have to add text boxes... i don't want that, I want word processing... and another thing in this brochure i can't add table of content because it is not by default in the template...
So my question is quite basic here, can we link Page layout and word processing without having to use text boxes and everything ?
    Thanks in advance !
    Have a good day

    Alexander,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
The simple answer is no. What differentiates page layout from word processing mode is that the PL mode has no text layer. So everything that goes on the page must be an object of some kind. And any pages you add to a PL document must also be PL. You can't mix the two modes. One way around it is to start with a blank page, insert a text box, then stretch the box so that it covers the entire page. You can the type in it as if it were a text layer in a WP file. You can even capture that page so that you can add it automatically when you need it, or save it as a template.
As for building a Table of Contents, it appears that Pages only sees text styles that are on the text layer, which means it won't see styles that are in objects -- which means it won't work with a PL document. From being a long-time reader of this discussion group, I've noticed it's rare that someone wants to add a ToC to a PL document.
If you find that you're going to be mixing text and graphics, start with a word processing template. If you really like the Catalog Brochure, you could always copy some or all of its elements over to a blank WP template.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I make categories under My Templates, as is done in page layout and word-processing?

How do I make categories under My Templates, as is done in page layout and word-processing? I have over 50 of my own templates and want to categorize them. For example: son's homework, business, etc. Thanks

Here are some screenshots of my organization. Your sub-folders need to be in the same folder as My Templates, NOT in My Templates which is confusing.

  • Switching between page layout and word processing

I can't seem to switch between page layout and word processing view.  I've read all the posts on this and still can't figure out why I can't just type a document into Pages.  The only option I have in page layout view is to type into text boxes, which is not what I want.  I just want to type a letter for crying out loud.
Before I get all the rants about reading User Guides, etc.  *I have*.  I've also searched on here and in-app help and just don't understand the fuzzy/non-existant answers.  Obviously, I'm a newbie, so please don't jump all over me for this.  If it was Word - I could do this in NO time.  I just find it incredibly frustrating that inputting a normal document should be so difficult.
Is "Pages" *not* a word processing program?  Is it just a cut and paste application?  Sorry for the tone - I mean no disrespect - it's just that I've been fooling around with this for DAYS and I just don't have time to spare anymore.  I really need to get this done.
Can somebody give me a straightforward answer on how to just type a normal document into pages without using text boxes?
Thanks and I apologize for not being mac-savvy.  It took some of us a lot longer to see the light =)

Here is a script doing the conversion task for you.
    Open a Page Layout document
    run this script:
    --{code}
set p2t to (path to temporary items from user domain) as text
set path_2_doc to p2t & (do shell script "date +_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.doc")
    tell application "Pages"
      save document 1 in path_2_doc
      open file path_2_doc
    end tell
    --{code}
    that's all folks.

  • Is it possible to change a document from Page Layout to Word Processing?

I just downloaded and launched the Pages 4.0.4 update, which adds the option of exporting to ePub. Unfortunately Pages won't export a Page Layout document to ePub.
Is there any way to change the type of document or would it be easier to just create a new document and paste everything from one to the other. This is a newsletter document that gets published monthly with new content so changing from one format to the other oughtn't bring too many problems.
    Thanks!

I know that floating objects isn't supported in WP and I think there are a couple of other things but I can't recall off the top of my head.
I remember that I started using it in the WP mode when I first put together this monthly newsletter and ran into some problems, and switching to Layout took care of those problems.
I've nothing against the WP mode, in fact Iuse it all the time for more traditional WP jobs. It's just that I found the Layout mode to be more suited to, well, laying out. I come from the really old school of physically cutting and pasting typewritten stuff and Zip-a-tone line art graphics onto a large sheet of paper lined with a "non-photo" blue grid. The person who actually printed it took a picture of these pages and used the resulting page as a lithograph master, using real (ugh!) viscous ink rather than toner. So having the option of moving objects around and flowing text around graphics is appealing. Let me know in a PM if you want a Pages file of one of these issues.

  • The yellow box around the pages when using Word Processing

I am somewhat new to the Mac, work with "Pages" to do newsletters. The first time I chose to use the Word Processing. Next I tried Pages layout.
It was when clicked on "View thumbnails" in Word Processing newsletter that I noticed the yellow box all around the pages. If I tried to delete a page, they all went. Luckily there is an "undo delete" button. (o:
I have since read the difference between layout and Word Processing from one of the posts. Is there any way to delete the yellow box?
    Compumom4

There is one yellow box for each Section of the document. When you delete a Thumbnail, you delete the entire Section, however many pages are in that section. In Page Layout, each Page is a Section, so it may be deleted without affecting other pages.
To delete one page out of a Section in a Word Processing document, the easiest way is to highlight all its content and hit the Delete key.

  • How to insert blank page into pages document when using word processing mode?

I've recently created a 50+ page document using Pages '09. I started the document using word processing mode. Now, when I view in thumbnail mode and try to insert a blank page somehwere in the middle of the document, it won't allow me to select where I want. It just selects all the pages, as thought they are one section. I believe this is because I am in word processing mode. My question is, can I convert the document to layout mode so that each page represents it's own section, without losing what work I've already done? And if so, how?
The document is entirely text boxes and images, so I don't have any need for word processing space. I just need new pages to act as blank templates for the text boxes and images I create.
Is it possible to keep all my work as is, and convert the document to layout mode vs. word processing mode?
    Thanks!

It just selects all the pages, as thought they are one section.
That's because they are one section. You must insert section breaks to separate them. There is no need to use page layout which does make each page a separate section. You have to manually add each page & use text boxes or other containers for the text & link the text boxes.

  • How to select text and pictures together in word processing mode?

    Hello,
I have written about 20 chapters of a book in word processing mode. Each chapter has many pictures, carefully positioned within the text.
Each chapter is a separate pages file.
Now i want to put them together into one single document and have a big problem.
When i press cmd+A to select everything in one document in order to copy and paste it into another document, i can either select the text OR the pictures, not both together.
In Layout mode it is possible, but not in word processing mode.
Does anybody know how to select both in word processing mode or how to transform a word processing document into a layout mode document?
Or is there a way to put together a word processing document from a number of single documents?
    Thanks in advance
    funthomas

I still use word processing for just about everything. The first two versions of Pages only had word processing. I think all of the complaints/requests about the "always-present" text layer led the developers to add page layout. I think they would have been better off adding another application (like AppleWorks' draw module compared to AppleWorks' word processing module.

  • Pages 5: Send shape to back in word processing mode

    Using Pages 5.2:
In word processing mode, how can I add a shape and send it to the back?
The only way I've found is to 'move object to section master' but this, of course, causes it to appear on all section pages. I could hack up the document to create sections of the pages I want shapes in the background but I need the sections to work as proper sections.
I want to achieve a design like the attached image, where the white 'Executive Summary' text is in the main text flow in word-processing mode.
Is this possible in word processing mode?
(I can achieve it by adding another text box like I have done in the image attached but when I create the table of contents, it only recognises paragraph styles that are used  in the main flow of text in word processing mode, not those used in text boxes).
    Thanks for any advice

    Hi Jerry,
I'd considered this though it felt like an ugly hack and I was holding out for a 'proper' way to do it! - That said, many thanks for your advice and confirming it looks like the best option, I'll do it like you suggest. I've submitted it as a feature request anyhow.

  • How do I name or rename sections in Pages word processing mode?

How do I name or rename sections in Pages word processing mode?

Those pages/sections you see in the when clicking on the Section button are Captured pages that you can use if you like. You can read about Captured pages and all about sections in Chapter 3 of the Pages User Guide. The Guide is downloadable from your Pages Help menu.
To delete sections you delete the section break. To see the sections break turn on the Invisible characters by going View menu > Show invisibles. Text in the section will stay if you don't delete it.
Add sections you do by adding section breaks. To name them you have to learn about capturing pages. Read about it on page 60 and 269.

  • How do make a watermark appear on each page in a word processing document?

I got a watermark to show up on my first page that says in a big font, "Draft copy". How do I go about having this appear on every page? I'm using the word processing mode of Pages.
    Thank you.

    PS,
Select your watermark and Format > Advanced > Move Object to Section Master.
If your document already has more than one Sections, you will have to Copy this object and paste it into each Section. Being a "Section Master" mean that it will appear on each page of the section you insert it into.

  • Can you help me with Page Layout and/or Design ideas for a software manual?

    Greetings,
I am a new InDesign user, and am converting a software manual that I created in MS Word into InDesign. It will be converted to a pdf to view online. I have the basics (3 master pages, page numbers, running headers, 2column pages with text boxes on the left and screenshots on the right), but I want to make it look prettier. Could you please give me some ideas on page layout and/or design to make it look better or more creative?
A few things that I am considering: borders around screenshots, a watermark, a logo next to the page numbers, different size/type of fonts, etc.
I am open to any suggestions to make this look better. However, please understand that I am new to InDesign. With that being said, please tell me a few steps when you mention your tips. Thank you!

Take a look at a few websites on Cannons of Page Construction.
I think the best idea for you is to look at a few software manuals and take tips from how they accomplished the layouts.
I'm not saying to copy them - but rather see what works and doesn't work, what worked for them might not necessarily work for you - research some layouts.
Fonts/type/sizes etc. are pretty much ambigious without context - is this a software manual for kids (soft cuddly big fonts easy to read), technical (small, tight spacing etc), Adult friendly (smooth, crisp clear, well spaced), elderly (large elegant fonts).
It all really depends on your demographic audience.
Being new to InDesign I suggest you take up Sandy Cohens Quickstart Visual Guide.
I think you should look at Michael Murphys Book on Styles
And you should definitely get your printer (the guys bulk printing) the booklet for you on board from the start to work out optimal sizes to suit their printing presses and workflow etc. And to ensure that you are setup correctly in page sizes, margins, safe type areas, colour profiles and a few other things that your printers prepress can help you with.

  • Opening 2 pages from same word processing file side by side

I am new to Macs and not much of a computer user, however is it possible to have my second page of a word processing file open up beside the first page rather than below. I thought viewing 2 pages at once would be a nice benefit of the 20" display?
    g5isght   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Yes. that's because books, magazines, etc. always begin on a right facing page. There are several ways around this. If you aren't planning to duplex or booklet print your document, the easiest way is to hit return on the first line of the first page, then go to Format>Insert Page Break, to create a new page right away, which will be a left facing page, and then the next page will be a right page so they'll appear side by side. Before printing, put your cursor at the beginning of the first real page and backspace to get rid of the fake first page.

  • Custom Page layout and related tmp files causing issues

    Hello,
I am trying to create custom page layouts using Design Manager and then editing the html file using a text editor.
I have created a content type (inherited from Page content type) and used this content type for my page layout. I used the snippet manager to add relevant webpart zones and snippets I needed and published the page layout. Under status it shows conversion
successful but I can see another file with similar name to my page laout but with ~RF119c862.TMP being created.
Even if I publish my page layout my webparts (via snippets I added) doesn't reflect in the page. I checked the preview of my page layouts and webparts appear when it is in draft mode but the moment I publish it loses all snippets (webparts).
I checked the html even after the page layout is published and I can see all webpart zones, my divs and snippet code there, somehow once I publish it the corresponding aspx page doesn't get updated.
Has anybody come across this before, I'm trying this on Office 365 tenant site.
    Regards,
    Manoj

I have seen a similar problem on-prem when a client had distributed cache misconfigured, but as your problem is with SPO, I doubt that is the problem.
Try creating another page layout but keep its associated content type untouched. Try adding snippets and such, publish and see what happens. If that works, then there must be something wrong with your custom content type.
Also, when you save a change to your .html page layout, open its associated aspx page layout in SPD and see if your changes were reflected there as well. As soon as your edit a html page layout and save your changes, SharePoint should automatically update
your aspx page layout right away.

  • Writers - please help with page layout and headers/footers in Pages

    Hello
Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I have fiddled around with my page layout and can't figure this out for myself!
When I type a manuscript, I like to have a header and footer giving the book title, chapter, my name, etc. I'm finding that the header and footer is set to a wider range than I have set the main body of the page. Would you leave it that way, so that it is easily differentiated from the actual text, or would you align the left and right margins on the header and footer to match the body of the text? And if so, how do you do this please?
Secondly, I can't figure out how to increase the top and bottom gap so that there is a good space between the header and the first line of text.
Any advice would be gratefully received!
    Thank you!

I don't understand what you did.
When we use the normal tools:
Inspector > Document > Margins, the widths of header, body and footer are the same.
Secondly, I can't figure out how to increase the top and bottom gap so that there is a good space between the header and the first line of text.
With the already named tools, we may adjust top & bottom margins with no change on the header & footer.
As I often wrote, looking in the PDF User Guide which is delivered with every copy of iWork is an efficient way to spare time.
