Monitor Not Going To Sleep on Mac Mini Server With Lion

Summary: I am attempting to configure a Mac Mini Server that runs OS X Lion. This machine was originally shipped with OS X Lion; it is not an upgrade. My current specific problem is that my Viewsonic VX2835wm monitor will not go to sleep when the minutes setting on the Display Sleep setting for Energy Saver has been reached. Instead, the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds and is replaced with a blank blue backlit monitor. (Ironcially, the display sleep menu cautions: "Never letting your display go to sleep may shorten its life".) I very much want and need the ability to have my monitor go to sleep so as to save energy and to extend the monitor's life for as long as possible.
Additional Background: I have had a couple of calls with Mac support and they have been unable to tell me whether this is a "design feature" or a flaw in the Lion OS because they have had no similar reports and they do not have the latest hardare available running Lion Server to test to see if this happens with other monitors. (They also, of course, don't have the VX2835wm monitor.)
I do, however, know the following:
(1) My HDMI monitor is connected to my Mac mini via a DVI KWM switch (ATEN CS1784) such that the HDMI output from my Mac is converted to DVI (using the DVI to HDMI converter that came with my Mac Mini) and is then run through the KVM and then converted back to HDMI (using a full pin DVI to HDMI cable). However, I have tested the monitor with a straight HDMI to HDMI cable running directly from the Mac Mini to the monitor and it has not changed anything.
(2) The Lion operating system correctly recognizes (in Hardware / Displays) the model of my ViewSonic monitor.
(3) I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) that is connected to the same monitor through the same KVM switch (by way of a BookEndz docking station) which properly shuts down the monitor when there has been no activity for however many minutes are set in the Display Sleep setting under Energy Saver. (Indeed, all I want is the same functionality on my Mac Mini that I have enjoyed for the last two years with this MacBook Pro.)
(4) When fully connected to the KVM, if I switch from my Mac Mini to my MacBook Pro and my Mac Mini display goes to sleep while I am working on my MacBook Pro, when I switch back to the Mac Mini, my monitor backlight will be off (and the power light will be standby yellow rather than the blue on) until I wake my computer up by touching the mouse of keyboard. I wonder if this may mean that the Mac Mini's signalling of the change in status from on to standby is somehow dysfunctional.
(5) Shutting down the server functions (and other open applications) has no effect.
I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone out there running a Mac Mini with Lion regarding whether or not their monitors go into standby mode when the Display Sleep time is reached (please note whether or not you are running the Server or Client version, whether or not it is a new install or upgrade, and what monitor you are using).
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. The VX2835wm monitor itself is now starting to fail as well-- a couple of times it's gone through a weird sequence of flashing screen colors on power up and ended up in an overscan mode (that took me for ever to figure out how to fix). I have decided to replace my VX2835wm with a Dell u2412m once it fails for good partly because I really want to keep the 16:10 resolution (very hard to find these days) and partly because I want to see if a different make of monitor will go to sleep properly based upon my Mac Mini power down settings.

  • Purchased mac mini server with lion, can i download lion for my macbookpro ?

    Hi,
I bought a mac mini server with lion server. I have macbookpro with Snowleopard. Do i need to purchase Lion again to install in macbookpro ?
I registered my mac mini with my apple id .. still when i check app store in my macbook it is asking me to purchase again.
    Can someone clarify ?
    - thanks LP.

Yes. What came on your Mini cannot be installed on your other computers. You will have to purchase and download Lion for the MBP. If you wish to install Lion server on the MBP, then you will have to purchase and download Lion Server, too.

  • Mac Mini Server with Lion (without Lion Server) ?

I intend to buy a new Mac Mini and obviously the Server Hardware version is the best option with a i7 Quad Core and 2x HDDs (the option to 2x 750 is $100 whereas the option for 1x750 is $150 !!! for the standard Mac Mini) ... well lets make it shor, I would like the Mac Mini Server hardware but I don't want the Server components in the OS, I don't need them, I don't want to configure them. Does anybody know for sure if I can deinstall the Server components easily ?
    Thx

    Hi RajPad,
i have not yet found a commandline tool to remove pages. If you're familiar with SQL you can use a tool to connect to the postgresql database where the pages are stored.
I won't try to write a "howto connect to pgsql on lion" here because i know this has been answered already.
If youre connected to the database collabd and you have a page url like:
    http://my.lion.server/wiki/pages/P9c196z/somepage.html
Then your SQL to find the entity is:
    SELECT * FROM entity where tiny_id='P9c196z';
Note the uid from that result and find and remove all related entries in other tables there after removing this entity.
I have not excercised that myself because i don't have a system to screw
Make a Database dump prior to your actions and hope nobody is editing pages while you're at work.
If you have a plain SQL dump you could pick individual datasets from there to rebuild if something goes wrong. You'll only have to note what you changed to be able to revert.
    Just an idea ....
Make a copy of your page and compare both pages in database. If one is working and the other aint you should be able to find the difference.
    Good Luck
    Andreas

    Hi John,
Thanks for starting this thread!   This has happened to me about four times thus far.
I've exactly the same setup as you (Lion Server on a 2011 Mac Mini with SSD and TB display), except a Pegasus RAID is also connected.  While I've configured the display to sleep, this has happened once even after leaving the mac for only about 30 seconds.  Turned back around and the display was black.
For now, I'm using a VNC client on an iPad (Jump) to VNC to the mini to restart cleanly.
A support document in Apple's display support section suggests zapping the PRAM so I'm going to give that a shot this evening when I get home (not very hopeful though...).
One other thing I might try would be to open Display Prefs via VNC and e.g. change resolutions, or click Detect Displays, etc.  Perhaps that will prompt the mini to reestablish sync with the display?  We'll see...
Again, thanks for this thread.  At least I know I'm not alone...

No idea if Windows will do it, but you can run Windows without Bootcamp & have OSX available at the same time, which should give you all the Monitors that OSX uses.

Was just on the phone with Apple about this.
The solution was as follows for me anyway...
    Go to your Finder
    Choose the Go Menu
    Choose Computer
    Choose your Macintosh Hard Drive
    Choose your "Library" Folder
    Choose the "Preferences" Folder
There should be a folder called "Audio"
Move that whole folder to the trash
    Empty the Trash
    Restart from the Apple Menu
    When you are back up and running;
Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu
         Choose Sound
In the output tab you should now be able to make the HDMI "Sticky"
Enjoy your sound over HDMI and no more dirty knees or broken backs unplugging the desktop speakers!

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

Mtn Lion not due out until the Summer, so no, you will not get a free upgrade.

  • Mac Mini Server with Raid 1

    Hi,
Is it possible to set up a Mac Mini Server with Raid 1 using only another mac computer such as a mac book?

Yes- Colin Jeukens posted step by step instructions back a couple of months ago. Here it is again...
Out of the box the mini comes without Raid. You have two identical HDs of 500Gb.
I have just set it up as Raid1. You can't do this when you use the startup disk from the mini. And as you don't have a Superdrive ... you need to be creative. You need another Mac with Firewire.
Step 1: Start the Mini in Target Mode. Press the T during start. In a few seconds the firewire logo will appear on your screen.
Step 2: Go to your second Mac. Connect the firewire cable between second Mac and Mini.
Step 3: On the second Mac start the disc utility. The two identical drives on your mini will show. Create a new Raid set (mirrored = Raid 1). Include both drives. Confirm the warning that all data on the mini will be lost.
Step 4: Make sure your second Mac has CD/ DVD sharing option installed. This is tou use the superdrive to install OS X Server on the mini.
    Step 5: Shutdown both Macs
Step 6: Start your second Mac in target mode. Make sure the firewire cable is still connected.
Step 7: Start the Mini with the option key pressed.
Step 8: Insert the OS X Server install disc in your second Mac.
Step 9: wait till the drive logo apears om the Mini. Continue the install. Will take about an hour.

  • External HDs NOT showing in finder on Mac Mini Server

On my brand new mac mini server. for the life of me, I can't work out why my 3 external firewire plus the thunderbolt drive we use as the actual drive we all connect to one the network, just will not show either on the desktop OR in the left column of the finder?
I have gone into finder preferences and selected External disks and no joy. am I missing something?  In fact, I'm fairly sure that at least the thunderbolt HD was showing when I first got it a week ago with teh mac mini.?
Superduper and disk utility CAN see them and this is the ONLY way I can do a safe eject currently as I have no other way to eject.
What might be happening do you think?

Hi Antonio, did you ever try this?

  • HT204350 I,m going to change my Mac mini server and time capsule at the same time what's the best way to transfer from both of my old machines

I've just purchased a new Mac mini server and also a new time capsule is there any easy way to ghost or transfer the new machines at the same time or is it best to do one at a time?

I have no direct experience transferring a TC and computer at the same time, but prudence tells me to do one, test to be sure it is correct only then do the other. It will take twice as long from process start to finish, but avoids any nasty surprises at process end. In close to 40 years experience, I have never seen a "crash conversion" (everything at the same time) that did not have at least one major disaster. I am sure it can happen but the odds are heavily against it. Patience is a virtue!

  • Going from xserve to Mac Mini Server

I have a graphic design studio (design for print and web sites) that requires a new server.
Currently around 6-8 users working on files (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator etc) directly from the server.
The server is configured with RAID1 and has aggregated ethernet.
I am looking to replace our 2007 xserve 2.66Ghz Xeon with a 2012 Mac Mini Server.
I expect there will be a drop in performance in terms of the speed with which files can be copied and opened over the network.
My main points of concern are: the speed of the internal HDs, and lack of ethernet aggregation.
Are there any ways of limiting this drop in performance, ie use an external thunderbolt RAID (I am thinking of the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt™ 2 6TB http://store.apple.com/uk/product/HFYG2ZM/A/lacie-2big-thunderbolt-2-series-raid -hard-drive?fnode=cb26126edba6d5cf1f20a1188ab2f9a15577d8779cb89532f051d642f0462 5 9ef9b142bff2e3ddede4276fdae4b4074b80ffc3c6968f0fa0f13643559d04820cd08bdea7601a2 5 1154a61b6497c20fc6ec726f25583cf16d5946c93865ea04dbfaea9c26291ec67aef08afd262a35 c 7c)
And would it be possible to use a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter connected to the external RAID to create the aggregated ethernet?
Any help or insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Richard

Thanks for the concise reply John.
I think the Lacie drive I am considering is RAID hardware, would you be able to check the link and confirm for me?
Any ideas if this will be as adequate as the Promise Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt RAID for serving up image and InDesign files of about average size of 40MB to 6-8 users?
As we are coming from an xserve we have taken for granted the speed at which it can handle the demands we put on it without breaking into a sweat.
I am just worried I will get this new system and be disappointed in a big drop in file access speeds.
Thanks again for your time and appreciate it is hard to be definitive in the answer as there are numerous factors involved that can effect the end result.
    All the best,
    Richard

  • Mac mini server with yosemite has no video

heres the problem; i have a mac mini server (2013) and i upgraded to yosemite a few weeks ago. first when it went into dleep mode it would not power back up; i saw this was a problem so after rebooting i turned off sleep mode & problem solved. for a few days now, on powering on the fan ran continuously then yesterday there was no video. i reset SMC & PRAM - no effect. i tried to boot to safe mode but still no video. help

Hi, long story short - I returned the Pegasus, got a new Pegasus and tested it. Also the second Pegasus had the error described above. So we returned that one as well, and bought a Synology DS1513+ instead.
I do not know for sure what the problem with the Pegaus'es was, but I suspect it is this:
    http://features.techworld.com/storage/1019/what-is-time-limited-error-recovery/
Shortly summarized - the drives in the Pegasus RAID box were not designed for a RAID setup. So error handling in the drives, and in the RAID box, interfered with each other, making the box marking drives faulty when they were not - and the copy job stopped because of a TLER error (Time Limited Error Recovery). Some of the error handling on the individual drives should be turned off. We ended up buying a Synology DS1513+ instead, with WD Red drives. These drives are specifically designed for RAID setups. This machine completed the copy job without error. I think the Toshiba drives (DT01ACA200) that were in the Pegasus were not designed for a RAID setup. So it all boils down to - a design flaw at the Pegasus team?

  • Mac Mini Server with Leopard

I installed a Mac Mini Server in my media room. Connected it on my Ethernet, where i also have two other mac mini's a Mac Book Pro throughout the house. They all do "see" and "talk" to each other, and share files, like they are supposed to do. The only problem is: when i rent movies via i-Tunes on my Mac Mini SERVER, i can NOT see them on my other Mac Mini's throughout the house. I still can see the mac mini server on the left of the i-Tune menu, as well as the music and other files on it, photos etc... but if i want to watch that RENTED movie in my bedroom via my local mac Mini, no can do. is that normal.
By the way after hours of trying, and spending over 10,000 dollars worth of mac products in my home, i called "On Line Support", and after some 25 minutes of pre-heating my ear on the phone, the nice gentleman wanted to charge me 49 dollars to answer my question??

And that is how phone support works unless you purchase AppleCare for your Mac. Without AppleCare, you get 90 days of free phone support (starting from the date of purchase of the Mac); after that, you get charged unless the problem turns out to one that is covered under the Mac's warranty.
