Monitor says VIDEO MODE NOT SUPPORTED after changing display settings

HELP! I am about to have a nervous breakdown with my mac mini! I hooked up the mac to my Philips LCD via DVI. No problem at all. But because the screen is only 15" I wanted to play around with the display settings a bit. So I changed the resolution from it's original 1204x768 to the one higher (not sure of numbers) and to my HORROR, I now can't get any picture at all - it says "VIDEO MODE NOT SUPPORTED". I have tried everything I can think of. I have rest the P-RAM, I have unplugged all cables, plugged the back in again, I bought the mac into work and hooked it up to my monitor and changed the resolution back to 1024x768 which is what it was on originally and that STILL didn't work. I can see the Apple logo and then it goes black and comes up with the error message. HELP! What am I doing wrong - I can't believe one click of a mouse button has rendered my display useless!!!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try booting the mini without the display connected, and then, once the system is running, connect the display. This will often force the system to default to a low resolution, and then correctly detect the display when it is connected.
If that doesn't help, with the display connected, boot into safe mode (hold the shift key down when starting up) and once the system is running, change the resolution to 1024x768, and ensure the correct refresh rate is selected. Rebooting normally ought then to give you a good display.
If all else fails, boot into safe mode with the display connected, and then in the Finder's file menu, use the 'find' option to search for 'windowserver' (no quotes). You should get 2 or 3 results, including one with a string of alphanumeric characters. Move all of them to the trash and restart normally.

  • Video mode not supported - after installing Lion

    Hi All,
I installed the new Lion OS on my Mac Mini, all went great and clean.
    But,
after 2 days of playing with the new OS cool new features I shutdown the Mac Mini and a day later when I started it my TV (Philips HDMI) could not recognized the video format and a message from my TV said "Video Mode Not Support" (I use the HDMI output to an HDMI port on my TV)
I went to my apple reseler and they reset my PRAM.
When I plugged it again at home it was working again.
Then I restarted it to check all is good... and again "Video Mode Not Supported"
It never happen with OS X Snow leopard. so I guess something is not working as it need to on the new Lion version.
I'm not sure if there is a workaround until Apple will release a fix but if someone know how to fix it, ill be happy to know...
    thanks
the hard part is that I dont have a wired keyboard or another display so I must go to Apple to get it solve each time it happens

    Hi Markus.
Im trying the update software once in a while but still nothing... I'm keeping my MacMini up and runing cus I know that if i will shout it down it will not come back with the right display driver.
anyhow, it did happend once that I shut it down and then it didnt work again after it came back on, so I played with it a little, i took it out of the power outlet and try a few clicks on startup like alt ctrl P and R and cmd + F1 and few other thing and after a few tries it did work... I have now idea why and what actually made it work again but one thing I can say its that the new Lion version have anything it needs in order to work curectly the problem is that somewhere along the startup process (and now im gussing) the OS select a wrong driver for the attached display (in our case Philips) and send a video format to the display that cant be recognaized by the display.
I realy hope pple will issue a fix to this problem soon!! cus in adition to that I have some zoom issues too which im not sure where it is coming from and if it have to do with our issue.
Anyway we all hope it will be solve soon.
    Have a good one... Eran

  • Tecra A3 does not work after changing power settings

I changed my power settings in my tecra a3 laptop and now it won't start properly. wants to start but just keeps going back to press F2 or F12 please help.

    Hi,
where did you changed them? In the BIOS or in the Toshiba HW-setup?
I would suggest you to go to the bios after powering up your machine. You must just hit F2 ant then in the bios search for the setting "setting everything to default" or something with "bios setup defaults" to reset your bios settings.
After that your machine should boot up again.

  • QuickTime does not Support the current Display Settings.

As per Subject and please change & restart this application.
I have never used QuickTime or iTunes and right off the bat I am having this problem.
I am a novice that inherited this system with a whole lot of soft/hardware!!! More than I will ever use.

Fixed: Error was with Intel HD 3000 drivers. Tried downloading the Intel drivers and reinstalling, but didn't work. Installed HP Drivers again, and worked.
Affected the Aero Effects, gave false info saying that Window Desktop Manager was disabled when it wasn't, and said the color depth was incorrect. I am assuming quicktime was having problems with the graphics drivers too.
Download and reinstall graphics drivers to fix.

  • G5 with samsung 52" tv  Mode not supported

Does anyone know how I can make my Powermac G5(single 1.8 ATI Radeon 9800pro) work with my Samsung 52 inch TV at HD resolution
I am attempting to convert my old Powermac G5 into a media computer. At some point I may want to add a blu-ray drive.
When I use the DVI on the G5 with a DVI to VGA adapter and connect to the TV via its VGA input. There is no picture and the TV says "mode not supported".
When I connect a second monitor to the ADC (via ADC to DVI) I can get the G5 to show up on the TV in mirror or extended mode (if I set the resolution to 1024 x 768 or less).
I have tried hocking up a monitor via VGA, setting the resolution to 1024x768, then shut done, restart with TV attached and still "mode not supported"
I have also tried making the TV as the main desktop in extended mode then restarting without the second monitor and still "mode not supported"
I tried a DVI to HDMI adapter but I got nothing "searching for signal" I would assume this should work so it might have been bad so I am going to exchange it and get a new one and try that.
    ?

I had to do the same, that is, accept a lower resolution for my LCD TV.
Using a Geforce 6800 GT, I have an interesting mix of "i" and "p" resolutions, but, as with the 9800 Pro, no 1920x1080p.
Just as well, though, as I couldn't read the text at highest resolution.
I'm pretty sure that this is simply a case of the high resolution 16:9 ratios not being supported in these older cards.
The resolutions that are available in the firmware of the cards are predominately for 16:10 ratio screens.
Remember, HDTV is a lot newer than most all AGP graphics cards.
I guess, when I have time, I'll have to play with DisplayConfigX and see if there is hope.

  • HT201310 what do you do when apple tv says mode not supported

My apple tv stopped working and the tv says either no signal or mode not supported.  I have restarted, unplugged the HDMI cables and restarted again.  I have not updated any software.  This Apple tv is new since December 14.  The TV I have is older Samsung HD.
    Can anyone assist?
    Thanks

sounds like you raised the resolution to fullhd 1080p and the samsung can't cope
    To select a video mode:
Press and hold both Menu and Menu up/scroll on the Apple Remote for about 6 seconds. Apple TV will cycle through different display resolutions.
When Apple TV reaches an acceptable display resolution and "If you can see the Apple logo, select OK" appears on your TV screen, press the Play button on the Remote.

My ichat says "computer does not support video chat" when i have a built in camera. what can i do?

    Hi,
In iChat open the Connection Doctor (Video menu) and the the Capabilities option
Are all items showing Green ?
Try restarting iChat (It re-reads the computers Ability at each launch)
If that does not work try restarting the Computer.
Make sure that in iChat menu > Preference > Video Section the Bandwidth Limit is not set to 100kbps (this is too Low for 1-1 video chats)
    Do a Speed test
"Real World" speeds need at least 256kbps both up and down.
Check the System Profiler is "seeing" the camera.
It will be in Hardware > USB

  • Changed resolution by mistake and have lost everything "mode not supported"

    Guys,
This one is totally my own fault but ive managed to crash my Apple TV and was wondering if someone may be able to assit me with a solution?
Apple TV was working fine on my samsung HD TV and i was playing about with the settings.
I belive i was in "resolution" at the time and the setting was 'auto'.
For no reason other than my own stupdity, i changed the resolution to 780p or something like that and the screen went immediately blank.
All i get now is "mode not supported".
Ive held down + and menu and done the scan and it wont retrueve my previous settings.
Ive also tried - and menu and still nothing.
Why didnt i just leave it alone.
Any ideas folks on how i can get this back working and restore to auto?
    Panicking.....
    Simon.

    Have you tried restarting it.

  • Anyone else having issues with third party changers saying "this accessory not supported". I get it every time I plug my phone. It only started after the iOS 7 updates

Anyone else having issues with third party changers saying "this accessory not supported". I get it every time I plug my phone. It only started after the iOS 7 update?

That's because part of iOS7 had code in it to look for and recognize unsigned cables.
In other words, Apple knew that people used non-signed ones and didn't care....until last month when they decided to care. People with iOS6 and lower should experience no issues (unless Apple patches those iOS versions) but folks with iOS7 will need to deal with it.
