Monitoring CPU temperature on a Digital Audio

Does anyone know of any downloadable CPU monitoring software out there that will work on a Digital Audio? Temperature Monitor doesn't work on this model (although I think it used to work on a Sawtooth), but it would a great utility to have.

Hello! Welcome to the Forums!
Sadly, there is no real way to obtain the temperature of the CPU in G4 models before Mirror Drive Doors. Those models lack the cpu sensor to report temperature. You might have to search xlr8yourmac.com or use Google to do a search for how to get CPU temperature from a Digital Audio G4.
The technology of those G4s doesn't include a sensor for temperature reporting.

  • Monitoring CPU Temperature?

Does anyone know of any software that will read out my CPU's temperature. I'm sure there is but just don't know where to find it. Thanks

    Oy, oy, oy.
If you’re going to run this marginal software, for god’s sake don’t leave it running, especially on battery power! It’ll run you batter down far faster than any of the so-called whine-stopping fixes. It genereates excessive CPU load and constant disk activity (that will prevent the disk from spinning down, e.g.).
Get some real utility software. Use Bresink’s Hardware Monitor or Temperature Monitor.

  • How do I monitor CPU temperature on a 2009 MacBook Air Lion

My beloved 2009 MacBook AIr is freezing up.  I think it is overheating.  How can I monitor the CPU temp to see if this is the problem?
The Apple Store folk thought the SSD drive has gone bad, but they wanted $799.00 to replace it.  I bought a new 2013 MacBook Air, but returned it because the screen had a purplish haze to it and the contrast was poor (to my eyes).  I love my 2009 MacBook Air screen, so I want to fix it.

Download from the Internet iStat pro or Temperature Monitor from the Bresink web site.

I like IStat pro because it also displays the fan speed.
    Ciao.

    Hey tata,
I think what you are looking for is the "Split Signals" VI, shown below in the code snippet. It lets you split the data wire into each of the corresponding thermocouple data values.
    I hope that this helps.

  • Digital audio input via mini jack/toslink from ADA, monitored via USB audio output... is this do-able? I know digital audio input should be okay but how do I monitor it, apart from using the internal speakers?

You can output audio thru HDMI, with appropriate adapter.
You can use additional cheap external usb audio for monitoring.

  • Can I out an Apple cpu G4 933hz into an Apple digital audio?

I know that the cpu will fit but will it operate?
reason for asking is that I wish to put a third party dual cpu upgrade in the 933hz and wish to utilise the 933hz cpu by placing it into an older G4 digital audio.

I just installed my 533 digital audio CPU in a 450MHz cube. It fit amd works. However you need to take into account pin configuration with bus speed and processor speed when swapping cpu's
The 533 ran on a 133MHz system bus while the 450MHz cube was 100MHz. When I installed 533 in the cube the bus speed pin configuration just happen to equal the right setting to run at 100MHz. Great for me! However the jumper positions for the CPU made it run at 400MHz speed instead of 533. I had to remove the 2 jumpers that were there (magnifying glass and nail clippers) and use a rear window defogger repair kit to add the correct jumper setting which brought it up to 600MHz.
In short your 933 running at 133MHz might just end up being 733 running at 66MHz (just an example) I guess I would just try it and see. Make sure you post back any information you glean.

  • Monitoring CPU/chassis temperatures on a first-generation x2100 (no SMDC)?

We have a first-gen x2100 that does not have a SMDC; its bios is fully up to date (v1.1.8). We'd like to be able to monitor system temperatures (and, ideally, fan speeds). This seems reasonable, especially since CPU and chassis temperatures as well as fan speeds are reported in real time in the BIOS. We're using OpenSolaris 2008.11, but all of the "tutorials" and command references I've found online that indicate where temperature and other info might be found yield no useful information (or an error) on this system:
prtdiag -v ==> no temp info
    smbios ==> no temp info
ipmitool str ==> "Could not open bmc device: No such file or directory; Unable to open SDR for reading"
batstat -t ==> "No thermal zones."
I've not found any mention of the SMDC being required to access thermal info, but is that the case? The BIOS is able to monitor temperatures and fan speed, so it seems reasonable that userland tools should be able to do the same. FYI, I've not yet tried the ILOM at all; I'd like to be able to access this info in userland.
    Any thoughts?

Yes, I know the SMDC can be used to monitor those sensors, but like I said, we don't have an SMDC. The sensor readings are clearly available from the BIOS, and it seems reasonable that they'd be available without the SMDC.
If that's not the case, that seems to be a pretty poor design decision (it's been many years since I've seen a computer [even very low-budget desktops] that don't make available temperature readings to capable operating systems, etc). Clearly something that's been addressed in the x2100 M2, but unfortunate nonetheless.

  • X2100 monitoring hardware parameters CPU temperature

    Hello all!
I have an X2100 under Linux SLES 10.0
I'm searching Internet for a long time, but cant get an answer.
Is there a way to get hardware parameters (CPU temperature/fan speed etc) via SNMP ?
What software should be installed (of course snmpd is running yet) to do it?
    What MIBs is needed?
    best regards,
    Alex

    Hi,
this hardware monitoring tools are not giving the real temp out. I tried Hardware doctor and it says that my Qosmio is running about 120 (!!) so I dont think its supposed to be the
    real temperature of my CPU!
If your FAN is running constantly, maybe your fan and cooling system is clobbed with dust. Maybe cleaning the whole thing would be useful. On the other side, try to adjust the setting in the "toshiba power saver" and try to find settings which fit for you (performance/silence) because you have a powerful system and then its normal that your fan is running high.
He had to cool a CPU, a VGA and a little bit of heat out of the case.

  • Will my 533MHz Digital Audio CPU work in my AGP Sawtooth G4?

I bought an OEM Dual 533MHz CPU to upgrade my single 533MHz in my Digital Audio Power Mac G4. I was thinking about putting the spare 533 Mhz CPU in my 400MHz AGP Graphics Sawtooth G4. The Digital Audio bus speed is 133MHz, while the AGP G4 bus runs at 100Mhz. Will it work or be downclocked slightly? Thanks in advance!

    Hello Craig,
Has been done, but it's not for the faint of heart. Requires microsurgery with a soldering iron and X-acto knife to change bus multipliers and things. As-is, it would be downclocked.
It's been covered somewhere - XLR8yourmac, perhaps - and there's a guy who sells on eBay who does a lot of it - currently has a 550MHz cpu listed - handle of 'ijnujb'.
I would think you'd get more satisfactory results from a used after-market cpu, but if you like to experiment give it a try and report back.

  • Found "Digital Audio" logic board, cpu & psu inside my Quicksilver ?

Recently got a quicksilver that "appeared" different to me . . .
Upon looking inside it's is a digital audio g4 swap (verified part #'s)
Logic board, 466mhz cpu and psu inside a Quicksilver case.
Any upgrades for this? does the dual 533 work in here?
Not sure what to do with this one, was hoping it was the sawtooth with the agp without adc (for testing flashed video cards without taping pins 3 & 11) . . .anyways

If you are just a TINY bit adventurous, get a QS CPU.
All you need to do is run a 12V line for fourth screw hole on CPU daughtercard.
Have a dig at XLR8yourmac.com, details used to be there...somewhere.
I once a QS 867 CPU and moved a resistor and made it a 933Mhz. I then ran over it with a rolling chair and knock a bunch of caps off.
Soldered them back on and sent it to a friend with a DA. He slapped it in and went on to do great things with that old DA. (like write the Mac Nvidia 6200 ROM)
The later QS 133Mhz bus CPUs had more cache, something like that. I know that the 867 was MUCH faster than a 733 I tried in it once.

    Hi,
Only have one temperature monitoring application running or you could end up with erroneous readings.
Try PC Wizzard.  Depending on your hardware, you should see temperatures for CPU, GPU and disk. At the same site you can also try HW Monitor.
I am running a custom motherboard and it comes with its own software for this purpose.  HW Monitor seems fairly complete.

  • G41M-P25 / HW monitor F71889F - incorrect CPU temperature readings?

My old mainboard blew up (literally, the capacitators leaked) and I had it replaced with a G41M-P25. The tech guy also put a new CPU cooler on the board because for whatever reason he decided that my old one wouldn´t fit. From then on my PC became extremely unstable, according to various monitor programs the CPU temperature was ca. 60°C in idle mode and went up to 85°C (!) within 2 minutes with full CPU load then the board would shut down.
I went back to the store and complained and got a stronger cooler. The system runs stable now, but the CPU temperature readings are still quite high: ca. 50°C in idle, up to 68°C with full load. I double-checked the values in the BIOS monitor and it shows the same temperatures. But the heat sink is cool (way below body temperature) and when I touch the spot where it is sitting on the CPU it is cool, too.
So... what are the chances that the HW monitor is reporting an incorrect CPU temperature? Is there any known issue with the mainboard G41M-P25 and the built in HW monitor Fintek F71889F? SpeedFan also reports quite high temperatures for "temp2" under full load (up to 80-90°C), which seems to be the mosfet temperature - but I know that SpeedFan is not completely to be trusted. I just worry about the CPU temperature, according to the Intel datasheet it should be ca. 63°C at most.
    My system:
    Mainboard MSI G41M-P25
    CPU Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz
The Pentium D is known for getting hot fast, but on the other hand the cooler is already pretty strong and like I said a touch test revealed that the area near the CPU is way below body temperature, so nowhere near 68°C. In comparison the temperature reported for my graphics card is 50-60°C which seems to be correct because it actually is hot and the air surrounding it is warm, too. Should I just ignore the temperature readings? Or is this a problem which can possibly be fixed with a BIOS update? Or maybe complain again and have the mainboard replaced?

Well, I used Speedfan. Problem is when under load temp2 hits about 80°C thermal throttling occurs which makes my processor useless for gaming. Because of that, I changed processor for my old P4 3,0GHz and OC'ed it a little (@3,27GHz). Temps are similiar, but lower than 80°C. Here is log from Speedfan after 2 mins CPU torture:

  • Lost L3 cache with QS 933 CPU in Digital Audio

    Hi All:
I recently installed a QS 933mhz processor in my G4 Digital Audio. All seems to be fine with the exception of the lost L3 cache. My question is: can I somehow achieve the L3 cache or is it an "is what it is" situation with this processor? Are there any articles on this subject?
Thanks for your thoughts and responses.

Jon has certainly hit the nail on the head. The base model Quicksilvers (733MHz and 800MHz 2002 version) didn't have any level 3 cache full stop. Consequently the 733MHz DA G4 (which was Apple's high end model of the time) was faster in real world performance terms compared to the 733MHz QS G4 (which, although newer, was Apple's low end model of the time). The benchmarks for the OWC processor upgrades show this as they have results for both models.
Apple often vary the level 3 cache amount between different models in the same range. For example, some MDD and FW800 models have 1MB, the high end MDD and FW800 models the full 2MB (the most supported by the 7455).
As I understand it the newer style G4 processors which support level 3 cache are actually slower in real world performance terms for a given clock speed. What makes them faster overall is the level 3 cache and the fact they clock to higher frequencies. Consequently the 733MHz QS processor, which doesn't have any level 3 cache at all and isn't clocked that highly (unless overclocked), is probably a bit of a dog.
