Monitoring packet rate & softirq

Hi,
on a server running Debian Squeeze and keepalived I ran into some issues.
If I produce many requests against the server the amount of softirqs increases very fast until 1 CPU is at 100%.
I want to investigate this problem but I don't know of a tool to monitor the paket rate and the IPs causing it.
Also I need for this investigation a way to examine the softirqs, what's causing them, what are they waiting for and so on.
Does anyone of you know of such tools?
Kind regards,
Andrwe

marvn wrote:you can use iftop as a network monitor
Unfortunately iftop isn't able to monitor the packet rate but only the bandwidth.
There is quite a difference between both.
A network card can be able to process terabit/s but that doesn't mean it can process terapackets/s.
And if your system can't handle the packet rate it gets cpu load because of softirqs very fast.
While too much bandwidth is just cut at the maximum which can be handled and that can cause slowly increasing cpu load.

  • Monitor refresh rates and Open Firmware

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the default monitor refresh rate of an iMac in Open Firmware and how?
    Thanks.

Thanks but I think the iMac G5 does have a refresh rate or something analogous to one, in this case I believe it is 60 hertz. I want to know how to change it in firmware because I believe it will solve an issue my display suffers from. See here:

OK, just installed the Omega drives with multires and it works!

use the window options that allow you to adjust the refresh rate

  • Erratic Wifi Packet Rate

    Hello,
I have a iPhone 5 that constantly switches back and for between 1.0Mb/s and 54.0Mb/s.
Is this any indication that the wifi is faulty on this phone? There are two other devices on the same ap
that are totally fine and maintain a constant rate.

  • ASR9K interface packet rate

The packet rate mib 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.2.1.1.7 for 7600 seem not support by ASR9K, anyone can share the packet rate /s mib for ASR9K

This is generally computed offline by the mgmt station based on the packet counters (from the IFMIB) and computed over time.
A great package that does this is MRTG you may like to mess around with.
alternatively you could possibly pull the XR interface rate out via XML.

  • Packet rate extremely high and crash my network

    ALL
some of my tenant may have virus, or something, and let the packet rate to very high, and the traffic to internet, and crash the firewall also.
what i can do for those trunk or switchport in order to lower the risk.
i had try to stormcontrol broadcast to 2%, but seem not to the problem.

I dont know if this is 100% relevant to your scenario but the link below
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1835/products_tech_note09186a0080110d17.shtml
describes a mechanism to protect networks against the nimda virus.
It uses QoS and CAR to achieve this.
A more long term solution in your case would be to isolate each of the "tenants" on their individual private vlans in isolated mode and have the router in promiscuous mode which would limit the broadcasts between the hosts themseleves and create a one way channel between each host and the router. This is of course for those clients that do cause havoc on the network. The rest of them could remain in the same vlans :)

  • Set permanent monitor refresh rate without xorg.conf

    Hi everyone,
Came back to archlinux, made a clean install with gnome 3. Found out that my GDM and Gnome monitor refresh rate is wrong. For GDM I solved it by adding   xrandr -s 1024x768 -r 85 to the gdm init script. Maybe it's ugly, but at least working. I've got no xorg.conf and I don't want to create it only because of this problem. Using GUI screen settings in System preferences I managed only to set permanently correct resolution (1024x768) but the refresh rate cannot be changed there, so every time I boot now I have correct resolution and refresh rate for GDM, but after login I have 1024x768@60 only, so I have to manually issue   'xrandr -r 85' every time I login. Can I fix it without creating xorg.conf file under /etc/X11? What I already tried was creating the config file under  /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/  and set proper resolution and refresh rate there, but it didn't help. If someone has advice or idea, i will be very grateful. Thanks a lot in advance.

I think you need to specify the values from the manufacturer's website.
    Here's my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "DELL"
    ModelName "U2311H"
    HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
    VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
    Option "DPMS"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nouveau"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
I probably don't need to specify "Driver" with open-source drivers, but it's easier to just replace it with "nvidia", since I sometimes switch to the proprietary ones.

  • External Monitor refresh rate conflict

I've got the PB 12" and for a longtime have been using a 17" Soyo monitor with the computer closed and Bluetooth devices. It's a great setup. Now one time disconnected it to take the powerbook, and now I can't run it with just the 17" monitor. I don't want two screens, and I don't want a 12" screen. However, every time I now try to close and wake up the computer, it says the there is a problem with the resolution and the refresh rate, it says it's "Out of Range". Now I figure it's because the computer is trying to send signals to my external monitor just like it was my Powerbook, but my screen can't show them because it has different specs than the powerbook monitor. Please help, if you need more information, please ask.

you have a CRT projector? If it is a 16:9 projector it doesn't really matter if the refresh rate is at 75 or 85 hz.
I know the x200 can do at least 75 hz at 720p, not sure if it can do any higher.

  • Changing default monitor refresh rate

    Hello-
I have just installed x86 Solaris8 on my system at home. I have a TNT2 Ultra card and I am using the default Nvidia TNT2 drivers included with the install on a Hitachi Superscan Monitor. I am capable of displaying the Solaris CDE at 1600x1200 but I have display issuesthat force me to reset my vertical and horizontal positioning every time I turn on the monitor or ever time the screen resolution changes.
This problem has existed ever since I got my videocard back whenI still had Win98 on the machine. The only way to correct it was to set the default refresh rate for all resolutions to 60Hz.
Is it possible to do this in Solaris8 and how?
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Daniel J. Noah

stop the dtlogin, login on the text console, and run kdmconfig.
In kdmconfig, choose the video card menu entry, don't make changes
to the video card but use on of the multifrequency monitor entries.
For example, the multifrequency monitor entry upto 110kHz should give
~85 Hz refresh rate at 1600x1200, use one of lower freq. entries to
    tune down the refresh rate...

  • 27" iMac Monitor "refresh rate"

    Hello!
I'm considering buying a 27" iMac but there's 1 more thing that I need to know before doing so.
Before you go ahead and tell me that refresh rates on a CRT and LCD monitor are not the same: I'm aware of that. LCD screens still have a similar thing, though, refreshing the entire image. Let's call it fps as I've no clue to what it's actually called.
Since it'll be used, mostly, for FPS games I want a screen who's able to pull off at least 100fps (like 100Hz in the old days) at various lower resolutions. Do you know if the iMac's screen able to do this, and if you do, do you know the various rates for different resolutions?
    Nicolai

Is it less than two weeks old?  Check if your store has a replacement policy?
Is it less than a year old?  Check with the local authorized service centers if you feel you have done nothing that could have possibly damaged the machine, as this would be a hardware issue.
Is it under AppleCare?  Same thing.
If it isn't expect to pay more than just adding an external display.  If you are in the U.S. http://www.dttservice.com/ is a good company to check out for under non-AppleCare replacement costs.   Mid-2011 should still be under AppleCare unless you bought it really early on.   May 3rd was when it came out in the stores, so you probably are still under the 1 year coverage, but better hurry, unless you registered it with Apple early.   At minimum buy AppleCare so you are covered for an additional 2 years if you haven't already, since it is showing signs of possible wear not normal to be seen.

  • Get monitor refresh rate

    Hello.
So, is there a way to get this parameter from flash somehow? The Capabilities class can't do it.
I'm using the latest Flex SDK and the new Molehill API for FP11, if that matters.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
There is a screen object in AS3 but only in Air runtime:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/ActionScriptLangRefV3/flash/display/Screen.html
but it *does not* provide access to refresh rate is it is nearly 60FPS on modern LCD I think, this is noted in Adobe's docs:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/ActionScriptLangRefV3/flash/display/Stage.html#frameRa te
That doc provides some hints from Adobe on optimizing performance/memory in Flash applications:

  • Monitor multicast packet or IP addresses

    Folks:
I have just started learning and researching the capabilities of EEM and TCL scripts; however, I am still lost, yet I have a special need for a script that will - monitor packets from a few specific multicast IP addressses, and if the stream stops, send out an email or notify me somehow. Now, I am not sure if that can be done, or if it would be best to create some sort of script.
I just need to be pointed into the right direction, or just to have someone else to brainstorm with.
    Thank you
    JJ

Fairly certain that packet tracer does not support Secondary IP Addresses on an Interface.
Although packet tracer is great as a learning tool, it has quite a few features which are not included. If you are studying for a CCNA then investing in a cheap second hand 2950 Layer 2 switch is a god idea also.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC Crashes on startup after upgrading to new computer monitors

Hey everybody, I am tech-savvy so go ahead and throw detailed answers at me. I recently updated to Windows 8.1 because Premiere Pro CC (version 7.2.1) crashed on startup in Windows 8. After the update to Win8.1, it worked fine with my old 19in. VGA full-screen monitors. However, after I installed new HD wide-screen monitors yesterday, I opened Premiere Pro and it started up just fine and is stable until it processes a video file. If I'm fast enough, it will successfully import a file from the media browser, but as soon as it "processes" the video in the media browser or the video in the timeline, Windows gives me the error "Adobe Premiere Pro CC has encountered an error and must be shut down". I tried every trick in the book- including changing the monitor refresh rate down from 144Hz to 60Hz, tried using an HDMI cable instead of DVI-D, and tried reinstalling Premiere Pro (restarting the computer at the proper points in the process), and tried setting it to render using no GPU acceleration (Mercury software only). Nothing seems to work. Below are the specs on my computer:
CPU: AMD FX-8120, GPU: Dual AMD HD Radeon 6670's 1GB GDDR3 each outputting to its own monitor via DVI-D Dual Link, Monitors are ASUS VG248QE 24" running 1920x1080p resolution @ 144Hz, 7200RPM Western Digital HDD.

I had this same problem on my HP laptop that has two video cards. I had to dissable the Intel 4000 in order to get Premiere CC to function. However, once this one done, it was no longer possible to use the external monitor (even when I closed the lid, it simply would not recognize the external monitor). Thus, each time I'm using Premiere CC then I have to disconnect the monitor and use device managre in Win8.1 to dissable Intel. It's really a huge pain in the arse. Also, I do not have an option to choose to choose a second monitor in Win8 once the Intel is dissabled. I've updated both drivers - so, I guess that's the only solution there is for my laptop. I'd suggest not using this software with a HP laptop that has two graphics cards.

  • Best Monitor for a Quicksilver/TwinView Combo?

    Hi,
I have a Quicksilver running Tiger, with a GeForce2 TwinView (64MB, Quartz supported, Core not supported). I use 9.2.2 and OSX, on separate drives.
I don't want to spend a lot more money on the machine - I just put in a Mercury Extreme 1.47 processor upgrade. But, I would like a good quality image, as my old CRT is starting to hurt my eyes.
I'm trying to locate a monitor I can run at a high refresh rate - above 100Hz, with at least a resolution of 1024 x 768 - using the current card, if that's possible.
If not, I would be interested in options you think are effective and cost conscious.
    Thanks for your time.
    J.C.

    Hi again!
With an LCD Monitor, Refresh Rate is moslky academic... 60MHz will appear as solid as CRTs needing 120MHz, and actually require less CPU time.
Watt usage is far less also.
