More Frequent Invalid Checksums

I have noticed over the past six months that I am getting an increasing number of invalid checksum problems when I download files, especially large files as OS updates, application updates, etc.
I have tried my Macbook Pro on different networks and the problem does not appear to be limited to one network.
I can retry the downloads and eventually get a clean download and proceed, but this is becoming an increasing pain to deal with.
I used to be able to count on getting successful downloads virtually all the time. Any idea what might be causing this problem?

I have tried both Airport and wired Ethernet interfaces and the problem happens with about the same frequency on either interface. I haven't installed any firewalls, drivers, etc. for months. In fact, I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled the OS from scratch. The problem still persists...again, not to the point where it is reproducible, just to the point where it is an occasional pain.

  • Mac Pro - Keeps crashing more frequently

    Hi All,
I wonder if anyone can help as I keep having issues with my Mac Pro crashing more and more frequently.
Its an early 2008 model 2 x 2.8ghz, 10gb ram, Nvidia 8800 GT512 card.  Im on mountain lion which is up to date.
I'm a photographer and whenever im creating a batch of previews in lightroom for instance it wont get all the way through without crashing and rebooting.  I thought at first it was getting to hot but after using SMC to run the fans at max during the preview creation, it now still crashes.
Below is a copy of the error report, which to be fair at the moment doesnt mean a lot to me, im hoping that some of you more advanced users can decipher it a little?
Many thanks in the first instance.
    Dave

Well Linc I think you're right, just done a fresh install and its started crashing still, not even stressing it in lightroom or anything, the latest report is below.
I'm going to have a session of swapping memory in and out to see if theres an issue there.

  • INVALID CHECKSUM: Motorola SBG6580 wireless modem router and software updates (10.7.4)

Tried to install 10.7.4 via software update dropdown on my MacMini over ethernet on my home computer network, failed.  Downloaded Combo Client 10.7.4 update from apple.com. Downloaded fine.  Failed to mount with invalid checksum error.  Tried to download on Win7 Dell laptop on my same home network via Wi-Fi, and copied to MacMini via USB flashdrive.  Copied ok, but mounting returned invalid checksum again.  Went to work, downloaded Combo Client 10.7.4 onto USB flashdrive, came home, copied it, mounted and installed just fine!
So, kept trying to download Combo Client from apple.com on my home MacMini.  Kept failing, invalid checksum. Did this about 20 times during a few days, and actually got two of them to mount without the checksum error.  Realized that something in my network was failing, intermittently.
Figured at this point it was either the Motorola SBG6580 modem wireless router or Comcast cable ISP service.
Went to best buy and bought a new Motorola SurfBoard SBG6580.  Installed it, provisioned it with Comcast.  Took about 20 mins with Comcast pushing over the same new Motorola firmware that was released in MID FEB 2012.  I think it is 3.3.1.  Tried to download Combo Client and invalid checksum again. Installed a new Motorola SurfBoard SB6121 modem (which has a very different firmware BTW) and it download and mounted the Combo Client 10.7.4 update just fine!
Realized it was the firmware that was causing it, not a broken modem.
Comcast pushes over cable automatically new firmware that is given to them by Motorola.  Apparently no did a thorough check large DMG files that require a checksum and it is therefore somehow corrupting them when downloading.  Earlier this year the firmware was updated 3.1 to 3.3.1 then Comcast pulled it and downgraded all SBG6580 back to 3.1.  Then in mid Feb they reuploaded 3.3.1 firmware.  That is the one causing the problems.
You can either wait it out till they push a new one that fixes it, and have all your large DMG files transferred from another internet connection and copy them over, or just get rid of that horrible SBG6580.  That is what I did and now using a Motorola SB6121 modem with a Cisco EA2700 wireless routher.
Let me know if any of you are also experiencing this issue and if/when Comcast/Motorola will fix it.

No, nothing custom that I did. Besides turning off the WPS thing as a possible security problem (we dont need it anyway) and setting the wireless passwords/SSID/channel stuff, everything is as it was factory or changed by Comcasts profile.
It's obvious if you replaced the SBG6580 with a two-peice combo and the problem went away, that it seems to be with the SBG6580. Just weird to me becuase a problem like that would almost seem more like a hard disk or web browser problem. TCP/IP has a checksum/retransmission layer or protocol built in, if short or defective packets show up, they would be sent again.
I mean I've seen like cheap 24 port 10/100mb switches running at 100% throughput, to the point they reboot. Anything connected to them stops or slows down but generally get going where they left off, unless the connection got severed.
I'm just saying a bad iso or dmg file, had to had bytes changed or missing, like the web browsers buffer or a bad block write on the disk drive saving it. There was a lot of talk about the SBG6580 on dslreports and comcast discussion groups, would be interesting to see if anyone else mentioned it for that model.

  • "invalid checksum" error downloading Photoshop 5.1

How do I solve this issue? Have tried downloading Photoshop 5.1 numerous times and keep getting an invalid checksum error when it completes and wont launch ... Also at this point the extracting bar on the download manager just freezes.

And more specifically? Operating system? Browser? System specs? Could be an issue with temporary disk space required for the extraction, could be that some security tool is interferring, could be that your network connection produces errors... Impossible to even guess without more info.

  • MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.dmg - invalid checksum

Hardware: Macbook Air (Mid 2011) - 256 SSD
    OSX Version: Lion 10.7.2
Trying to update to 10.7.3.  System Update downloads then fails to install (can't remember exactly what it said but I think something about the file not being valid) - tried twice
Did startup with cmd-R and used Disk Utilities to repair permissions (twice), also verified disk.  Repair permissions did show:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
Following Disk Utitlties repair did safe mode boot
Tried to use the combo update, but get invalid cheksum - tried three times
HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS WRONG.....

Thanks for the tip.  I give it a try.  Sure hope it works.  One question:  When you say "not opening any applications when it reboots" I'm assuming you still need to open Chrome or Safari to get to Apple's web site to start the download.
    Wayne of America wrote:
I've had that issue a number of times on a Mac Pro with large downloads from Apple.
I eventually found that if I did a reboot, unchecking the tick to re-open applications on boot, not opening any applications when it reboots, then downloaded again I wouldn't get the "invalid checksum" message.
Also I found it more reliable not to update from the System Update but to go to the download page at Apple and download the Combo Installer. That cleans up/reinstalls any pieces that have been added since 10.7.0.

Aperture 3 keeps crashing on me, consistently. More frequently after using Burn tool or skin smoothing - and even more often when I feather. What can I do? I already upgraded my RAM. I'm at a loss!

    4) When my computer crashes, once it starts again, it says "repairing" ... but I am not familiar with reparing permissions -- can you explain how I might do that?
If you are running OS X Lion, then you can restart your computer and then press and hold the 'Option' key immediately after you hear the start up 'gong' (usually heard when grey screen shows as it restarts).
You should see at least two Disks to choose from. Choose 'Recovery Disk' and wait for it to load, then choose 'Disk Utility' option in the Utilities dialog.
Once Disk Utility loads, do the following:
1 - In the left hand pane, choose your system partition (usually called either 'Macintosh HD' or 'Macintosh SSD'). Note - don't choose the actual hard drive listed above the partition when using Disk Utility in OS X Lion as this doesn't offer options for repairing due to it including the Recovery Disk you have loaded in memory.
2 - Click the 'First Aid' tab
3 - Click the 'Repair Disk Permissions' button in lower portion of main pane and allow to complete. Ideally, you will get a final message in main pane saying Disk Permissions are repaired.
4 - At lower right of same pane, click the 'Repair Disk' button and allow to complete. Ideally, you will get a final message indicating that Disk Repair is completed and all appears to be good.
5 - Quit Disk Utility > Close Utilities dialog window > Click 'Restart' button (confirm as needed).
You should boot straight into the system partition when complete.
Note - any red text in the main pane text while running the repairs will be issues and you will need to follow the advice given or post back.
If you are running Snow Leopard; then (as David mentions) boot from your first OS X reinstall disc and run the Disk Utility the same way; except you select the actual hard drive listed at top of left pane (not the partition below it). This is because Snow Leopard does not use a 'Recovery Disk' partition and repairs can be run on the HD or SSD itself.
    Hope that helps.

  • I get a box that says a script is not working. The name of the script is file:///C: /Program%20files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsBlocklistService.js:648 This is getting worse and more frequent. What can I do?

This box pops up more and more frequently, and sometimes completely ties up my computer.
If I knew any more to tell you, I could probably fix it myself!

In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

  • After I tried to install Mavericks on my Macbook Air, June 2012 the the drive began to fail, with the appearance at more and more frequent intervals of the spinning beach ball, I had to restart even  after I wiped the drive and reinstalled Mountain Lion

After I installed Mavericks I could no longer shut my Macbook Air (mid July 2012) down, except by force quit,I was using an Apple Tv screen and Apple wireless keyboard. After that the spinning beachball kept appearing at more and more frequent intervals, even after I had wiped the drive and re-installed Mountain Lion from the Apple site. It is now almost non functional. and just three months out of warranty

Backup your data as soon as you can.
MacBook Air computers sold between June 2012 through June 2013 are known to have a high SSD failure rate and Apple is replacing them for free.

You should maintain current backups.  Given the known failure rate of your SSD that is especially important.

  • My MacBook Retina has been shutting off multiple times per day. It is beginning to happen more frequently. What can I do to locate the exact issue? My warranty has expired so I would like to get to the bottom of it without taking it in to an apple store.

It is beginning to shutdown with no warning more frequently. What can I do to locate the exact issue? My warranty has expired so I would like to get to the bottom of it without taking it in to an apple store.
I am currently learning how to do diagnostics on mac hardware but I am not a native mac user. It is unlikely that this is a software issue. Please, any input will be helpful.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • More frequent flickering since 10.6.3 upgrade

    Hi,
I have more than a year old MBP with a discrete and an integrated memory video card (first unibody model).
When in low battery consumption mode (i.e. integrated memory) I have impression that the flickering started to be very permanent (let's say 5 times in 10 min) since I've upgraded to 10.6.3. When in discrete mode I haven't notice any flickering.
Did apple acknowledged this issue? My guarantee has expired, and before this upgrade the flickering was really very seldom (maybe once a day). Did anyone had any experience about this issue and how the apple managed the problem?
I think I have replaced within a week the first piece I've got because of the same problem (it was in the local shop not through apple store).
I read somewhere that the guarantee was increased to two years for some models ... well I'll call apple in any case I just wanted to have someone's experience just in order to refer if needed.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sharlo

I have a similar problem. My unibody MacBook Pro is connected to an external Dell 2407WFPHC display. In the past, this has suffered from flicker on very infrequent occasions with either graphics setting (e.g. once a month?). Since 10.6.3 this problem has become much more frequent (once or twice a day).
Unplugging and and replugging the cable fixes the problem.

  • OS UPDATE / Invalid Checksum / Appstore / Main Apple web page

Hi.. I know this conversation closed many months ago but I am having the same problem. I have just turned on one of my Macbooks and it indicated via the MacStore that I needed the recent update of IOSX software. Currently I am running 10.8.2... and it showed that I needed the new update of 10.8.3
I clicked on the download button and after download it came back with a message to say the file had been corrupted during download. I tried to download it again via the App Store but it then said that there are no current updates or all updates are current. I checked to make sure that the existing software had not updated and it had not. So I went to the Apple webpage where you are able to download files directly from the site. http://support.apple.com/downloads/
I then tried to download the 10.8.3 combo software... After about 35 mins I tried to install it from the Download file
After validating the file which is normal.. It cam back with an error - "Invalid Checksum" So I deleted the file from downloads and tried again.... Same thing...
I then tried to download the smaller update file (the one below in the image) -
Less time to download but came back with the same error.
So in short I am unable to download this update... I am getting the same error message "Invalid Checksum" when I use either the AppStore or the main Apple software update page on the web..
Anyone suggest anything? I have tried to download this a couple of times now and am getting the same results.
    Appreciate any help or advise.

Interesting. I went to apple.com and dragged the url to the dock. There is a clickable space created, which displays "Apple" when you hover over it. I can click on it successfully, as you say. And I can drag it off the dock as usual. But there is no icon!  I tried a couple of other websites -- same result!
    A small bug, I guess.
This behavior persists in all my user accounts.
    Can others confirm?

  • Refresh portlet report more frequently than once per hour

When you publish a report from discoverer in the portal, you can tell it to automatically refresh, but the most frequent refresh it allows is once per hour. Is there some way I can refresh a report more frequently than that? Can I use the scheduled workbook functionality to achieve this, since in there you can schedule it to run as frequently as once per minute.
    I'm using Discoverer 10.1.2.
    Thanks
    -Nissim

    These are two different schedulers...
We are considering changing the UI to let the users specify a schedule frequency more frequent than once an hour. But that is in a future, as yet undecided release.
For the time being, you can resort to hacks to refresh Discoverer portlers more frequently than an hour. Some information on the same is available on Metalink. I shall see if I can publish in the next few days a blog post on how to do that. Of course you have to realize that something like this is not encouraged or supported.
    Thanks

  • I add apps to my toolbar for the websites I use most frequently, or to remember one that I do not use as ofter. These apps disappear on what used to be a monthly basis, and now more frequently. Am I doing something to cause this?

I love the feature to pin as app tab on my toolbar. When I first began using this feature, after about a month the toolbar would drop all my apps. I would have to re-add as I used the websites again. Some of my sites I would add because I didn't use them enough to remember them all the time and this was a big help from having to search for a sight all over again. Am I doing something to cause these apps to be dropped? It seems to be happening more frequently now, like every couple weeks. It is annoying to have to keep going back and pinning these sites as app all over again.

    Tks Turingtest2,
That gives me something to think about.
Let me tell you a little more of the puzzle which I should have added originally!
I have about 60 podcasts.  So I want to group those podcasts that I need to download everyday into one "collection" - then at the begiining of the day, I look at the "Every Day" collection of podcasts and then manually down load them.  This way I do not have to look at the other 40 podcasts which are weekly or Monthly podcasts.
Your script idea will help me with another problem I have (tks!) but I dont think it wil help with this problem!
I really want to assign something at the "header" level - ie the actual podcast name, rather than the individual daily or weekly or monthly podcasts which is how your script works.
I think I have found a possible fix by assigning a code (ie "weekly") in the "Composer" field of the podcast and then showing "Composer" in the column browser and then selecting all the weekly ones etc etc.
    I will test this!
    Tks again!

  • Movieclip movement triggered by socket event, need more frequent rendering

I have a flash project that's implementing a simple two player game.  I have added an enterFrame function to my main movie which listens for keyboard activity in order to move a cowboy gunslinger.  Whenever the cowboy moves, I send a message over a socket to a server which dispatches the movement to the other connected client.  This works pretty well, however, the movement messages tend to arrive in clumps which results in jumpy animation of my cowboy on my opponents screen and jumpy animation of his cowboy on my screen.  To illustrate, i put a trace in my enterFrame function because I am imagining that this function will run roughly once each time my main movie renders the screen.  I also put a trace statement in my function that responds to network traffic and moves the remote player's cowboy on my screen.  Here's the output:
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    client movePlayer running
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
    enter frame:4
As you can see, I'll get several messages in a row from the remote client which instruct me to move their cowboy ('client MovePlayer running') and they will all run in a row before the screen updates.
I'm guessing I should be using something like updateAfterEvent but this method is only provided by Mouse, Timer, and Keyboard events.
    So a few questions:
    1) Can someone recommend a good approach to force a screen render each time an incoming movePlayer event arrives over the socket?  It's important to note that my function for handling these events has no visibility to the original socket data event.
    2) Am I right in understanding that the enterFrame function of my main movie happens once each time my movie is rendered?  Is there some more accurate event to which I could attach a trace message so that I better understand the relative frequency of the render events and the socket events?
    3) Does firing an updateAfterEvent call force onEnterFrame events to happen more frequently?  I'm worried about destroying performance by inadvertently firing more enterFrames which would fire more socket events which would fire more enterFrames, etc., etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.
