Moto Q vs BB 8330 (Alltel)

Greeting to All,
I have few questions to ask about the BB 8330 vs my Motor Q (1stG)
I am looking into getting the BB 8330( or whatever new BB that will be on the market in May) this Spring through Alltel (or Verizon depending on my local migration date).  Right now on my MQ I can wireless sync my outlook contacts/calendar with my phone & PC thru an app called Plaxo from Comcast. Outside of my data plan that I have with Alltel I pay no additional fees to do this, and this is a major convenience for me, all my contacts & appts are updated on the fly with no hard connection require.  But with my email I have to manually push my emails (I am using a Comcast acct) to my phone, but here is the catch my phone will only retrieve mails that I haven’t physically opened on my PC, but when I do open my email using my PC, and I retrieve my emails from my phone the email are deleted.  In other words retrieving emails to my phone is only accurate if I have my outlook closed on my PC.  But I’ve learn to live with that on my Moto Q phone. Now if/when I switch to the BB are their App that allow me to wirelessly sync my mail/contact/calendar with my Outlook, also I hear that with BB phones emails are automatically pushed to the phone, would that work with my Comcast acct, or does that only work with web-based acct (yahoo, MSN, gmail)?  Also will I have to incur any additional fees from BB to have this done, other than the (highly expensive) service plan that I have with All-tel.  Also with normal use I have to charge me MQ every night(extended battery), what is the average battery life with the BB 8330?

1) well, but the blackberry way.
If you want to use the Blackberry mail service, you will either have to use a BIS address (= a new address to which you can forward your AppRiver emails to), or use a live.com/gmail.com/yahoo.com address.
In the first case, when you send an email it will always be from the BIS address.
in the second case, it will be the email address of the mail host.
you can also use a desktop redirector but it deafeats the purpose.
2) very well, but I can't compare. But I know that apart from very recent WinMobile smartphones, you can't get realtime email like on a Blackberry (you can if your smartphone supports IMAP-idle, and your email provider too, like gmail.com). Connectivity with an Exchange server (contacts, calendar, tasks, email) is harder on Windows Mobile.
decision making is different.
For many aspects, the Blackberry is not a smartphone. For many people like me, the Blackberry can't save some filetypes of mail attachment : xls, pdf, doc. and if you want to store it on the blackberry, you have to wait for an upgrade so that you can store it and then open it later after you have deleted the mail.

  • 8330 alltel curve won't sync with PocketMac, even after driver update

Sooo I have a blackberry curve 8330 I recently got through Alltel. I
installed PocketMac twice now, and was reading all about the FAQ's and
tech. support and it's not recognizing my blackberry. I tried syncing
and it said the "error 1: skipping" thing. I also downloaded the
"driver update" and it's still doing the same thing. It shows my phones
like charging when it's plugged in but I can't sync it. This is my
    first blackberry and I'm confused.
    Can someone help me, please?
And, does anyone know what "Enterprise Activation" is?
    Thanks

I also had problems syncing my 8330 Blackberry with my Mac with a program called PocketMac and after installing and reinstalling the program several times and syncing for hours on end (the program was just sitting their), I also spent $49.95 for PocketMac Tech Support. Still no results. I did a little more research and I found a program that I thought was easy to install as long as you follow the simple instructions and it worked great, the program is The Missing Sync for Blackberry Version 2.0.1. it cost $39.95 it is available at www.markspace.com.

  • Media Card Settings

This is kind of a wierd question, and I've searched for an answer with no luck.  Previously on my phone, under the pictures the two options at the top were for the Cache and the Media Card which upon selecting the Media Card, it would let you view the folders within it.  Now, for some reason, and I'm not sure what I've done...all of the subfolders within the Media Card are in that top list automatically.  I want it to switch back so that the top only displays Media Card, instead of the subfolders within it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!  Thank you.
    Justin
    8330 (Alltel)

I think I understand (not that I know why it matters)... BUT,
the next time you leave your Media Card subfolders, try not to exit until you have navigated upwards to the Media Card main folder.
See if that works and when you return does it return to the Media Card, rather than its subfolders.
    If not, I don't know...

  • Cannot sync Outlook 2007 Calendar with Alltel BB 8330

OK.....Seems like a lot of folks are having this problem. Here is what I've got
    Vista Home Basic SP1
Outlook 2007 (As a component of Office Enterprise 2007)
    BB8330 running OS 4.5.0.127
Configured with two email accounts-Default calendar/account is the same as the Outlook account. (I have Groupwise at work...this is not the default account/calendar)
    Blackberry DM 4.5
    Here's what I've tried....
Uninstalled and re-installed DM countless times
Installing latest version of DM (4.7)
Installing latest version of device OS (4.5?)
    Deleting Intellisync folder
    Sync only calendar
    Running DM as administrator
Deleted all BB calendar entries associated with the Groupwise Email account
Have run scanpst on Outlook and repaired file (it said there were some problems)
First synchronization worked great, the only thing I did between the first and second syncs were change some recurring calendar events and add two events to my calendar associated with the Groupwise account. I have since deleted those Groupwise events and that calendar shows no entries when i look under calendar-options.
Now i get the much discussed "Desktop Manager has stopped working" error when DM begins to process my Outlook calendar. It syncs contacts fine, reads and processes device calendar, then reads 631 Outlook calendar records, begins to process Outlook calendar records and stops immediately. I have to reboot to get DM to attempt to sync again. Here's the log from the Intellisync folder...

This is baffling. I have used a Palm TX for years and was excited about jumping into the BB world. I love the phone but I purchased it primarily for keeping track of my schedule. I am not impressed and have 26 days left on the trial. I hate to take it back to Alltel but its worthless unless I can easily and reliably sync the calendar. Anybody got any answers?
    Solved!

OK...here's the update. I tried a few more tricks, too numerous to go into and NOTHING worked. I finally downlaoded and installed Companionlink Express and.....presto! I can sync again. 49.95 for the Companionlink software. You would think the BB folks could write (or purchase) a decent piece of software. I purchased the 8330 primarily to help me keep up with my calendar. When that didn't work, I had a $200 dollar cell phone. RIM almost got this one back! By the way, the website is www.companionlink.com.

  • Using a 8330 curve on Alltel

I purchased an 8330 Curve that originally was set up on Sprint.  The seller said it would work on Alltel (my provider).  Alltel says I have to have an Alltel phone.  Is that correct?  thanks

    Welcome to the forums.
That is correct - so far no CDMA carriers are allowing devices from other CDMA carriers on their networks.  That includes Sprint, Verizon, and Alltel.
I'd ask the seller for your money back.

  • Using a Alltel Moto Q as a modem through Bluetooth

I've used a Moto Q as a modem on our PC for the past few months and I just got a new Macbook Pro. I've done some research and I installed a PDAnet software on my phone from our PC, but I couldent get my mac to read the software, but it is installed on the phone. I can get a bluetooth connection but I cant my network thing to connect...im using the exact same info from our PC but Im not sure how to use bluetooth to connect. I usually use usb on pc....but usb does not work on Mac im thinking, and i dont know if im supposed to activate the modem or what...im confused..its just not working.
    please help

I'm struggling to do the same thing with my Nokia E71, despite various guides across the internet.
However, http://www.fibble.org/archives/2007/10/updated-modem-s.html looks as if it might be of some help to you. The modem scripts included with OS X are often outdated or limited, so custom ones have appeared. This is all the more frustrating when it's possible to package modem scripts into iSync plugins.
    Best of luck,
    Jamie

  • Alltel Curve 8330 email problems

    Hello everyone,
Hopefully somebody can help me with this. My mother has had problems recieving emails on both of her email accounts for the past few days. She can send email out. I've tried pulling the battery a few times and validating the accounts. She has an 8330 running OS 4.5.0.89. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

I see. It would be best to check with them then. Do you know if it was setup with outlook web access credentials? If so then they could look at these articles:

  • Alltel 8330 Curve "Blackberry Device Manager has stopped working" HELP!

I am a brand new smartphone owner, and first time owner of any Blackberry product, so I am a little overwhelmed here.  My problem stared about a month after I purchased my Curve.  Everything was working great, syncing everything, no problem.  Then, I started getting the following message:
"Blackberry Device has stopped Working" with the additional verbage underneath "Windows is checking for a solution", after about 2 nanoseconds, that goes away and the following message is displayed "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I am running a new HP PC with Vista 64bit OS.
The error occurs only while syncing my calendar; I have been able to sync everything else.  I have downloaded the most current desktop manager software ver. 4.7 english without media manager.
I have seen many other users having problems synching their calendar, but I am not sure if I have the same problem for the same reasons.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Hank

The reason your device is running sluggishly is that you are running OS 4.5 on it.  That is the latest OS the 8100 will run.  However, it's slow running that big OS.  There is no OS 5 or 6 for the 8100.  You may be able to update to a slightly newer version of the 4.5 (4.5.0.188 is the latest) but you won't see much difference.
If you want to update to it you can follow the instructions here:

  • Alltel Customer Confused On 4.5 OS Update

    Hello all,
I searched for my problem concerning Alltel and the 4.5 update for 8330. From my research I noticed back in March that Alltel is still playing around and not letting us have our most wanted update. I also have a complaint and want to clear this with everyone who might run into this problem. I downloaded the 4.7 Desktop software from blackberry.com and when I ran the program it tried to upgrade my device firmware to 4.5...well after trying this for hours and getting halfway done I would get stuck on 191 of 295 or whatever the count may be. So I am going to assume after 3 fatal errors that blackberrys 4.7 software doesnt know the difference in carriers, and that it will try to update any 8330, yet fail, because somehow Alltel has a lock on the update continuing on the phone.
Sounds crazy to me, but that's just the way it works when cell phone companies want to make us wait.
Now am I downloading Alltel's required version of the desktop software which is 4.3...which makes no sense but thats my choice. And I will also assume that when I go to update it will say that I have 4.3 OS on my handheld and that it is up to date, yet it isn't...
    This is irritating.
Am I "up to date" as far as my knowledge and research goes?
    Thanks all.
Hope this clears up anyone else trying to use the wrong desktop software version.

Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Support Forums.
    I don't think so.
    1. That error-ing out in the upgrade could be the reloading of the calendar or contact database, not the OS. Can you discern when the error occurs?
    2. Alltel doesn't require OS 4.3, but it does come loaded. You can upgrade to ANY other carrier's release of OS 4.5 for the 8330 and be fine. Alltel even had 4.5 up on their download site for a short day, and retracted it for some unknown reason. But the OS is working fine on the 8330.
Read this thread, and follow the instructions exactly as written and in order as written and you will be fine performing the upgrade manually.

  • Can't open picture attachments on BlackBerry Curve 8330

I just traded my Pearl 8130 for the Curve 8330 yesterday.  While I think I made the right decision, I'm a little annoyed by the fact that for the most part, I can't open email attachments.  Keep in mind, this is when I actually use the Internet Browser to access my various accounts.  In other words, I'm actually going to www.gmail.com and www.hotmail.com.  When I get into my Hotmail, it'll show the paper clip signifying an attachment but won't give me any sort of option to open it.  It just lists the file name(s) and that's it.  When I go into my gmail, if I've got an email that only contains one or two pictures it'll usually open those.  But any more than that and it's the same deal with Hotmail, except that it'll actually have the "6 Attachments" link that I can actually click, but when I do it just lists the file names in regular type and there's no option whatsoever to open them.  It doesn't open any kind of thumbnail either.
It's kind of a bummer to me because I have a lot of saved pictures in my email accounts that I'd like to save on my phone as well.  If all BlackBerrys are like that, I'll just deal with it and shut up.  When I get email attachments in the accounts I've set up to go directly to my BlackBerry I can always open them, so maybe this is just normal for BlackBerrys.  But if mine is actually having a problem I'd really like to get it fixed.  If that's the case, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?  I already resent Service Books and took the battery out and put it back in.  That's all I've tried so far.  If all else fails I can just take it in to Alltel to have it looked at but it'd be nice to avoid having to do that.    I know there are other ways to go about this... I can always just manually move them to my phone's memory card from the computer and stuff.  Getting them directly from my email would just be a little quicker.
    Thanks, everyone!

Blackberry browser isnt exactly the same as a browser on your PC. It has limitations, such as sizes. when you added the email to your BIS account its now mail on your device which is the primary function of a blackberry. when using BIS or BES emails, they are designed to truncate if too big, but if you wish to look at more it gives you that option. www.hotmail.com is not designed to accomodate blackberry. Your best option is to stay to the BIS email option.
Not to mention it uses less of your data bandwidth to use BIS email rather than browsing to www.hotmail.com

  • Alltel upgrade to ver 4.5 failed

I am trying to upgrade to v4.5 from v4.3 so i can get docs to go, recieved an email from bb saying upgrade was available... alltel previously only supported ver 4.3 now when i go to upgrade it says that i am running the most current version ! and i had verified it is still ver 4.3.
They call this a business phone but it cannot open attatchments ! (word, excel etc.) "docs to go" is included in the new ver4.5... so how can i get this update ?

Alltel is not offering the OS 4.5 upgrade yet.

It is not Blackberry, it is your carrier. Alltel recently added MMS service and for a lot of users it doesn not yet function properly.

  • Blackberry Curve 8330 OS 4.5 sound "crash"(all sound stops)

Issue:  No sound of any kind for anything.  When calls, messages, or notifications are recieved the LED blinks as normal and the phone will vibrate if it is set to.  Sounds do not play for any notification or in the media player;  All sounds show up properly and their lengths display as normal however when play is pressed almost nothing happens.  The play button changes to pause(as it should during playing) and a progress bar appears, but the player stops almost immediately and without playing any part of the sound(the changes are only visible for a moment).
What causes the issue:  Unsure.  I believe whatever underlying portion of the OS that controls sounds is crashing when it is called to play a sound, but I don't think it's any sound in particular.  The first time I encountered this issue I was changing notification tones and browsing through the list of sounds.  The sounds were playing as normal and then simply stopped upon selecting a tone from the list(there was the normal delay as if it would play the sound, and then nothing).  I had played the sound before, and it was a default sound.  This time(the second time) sound stopped as I recieved a notification.
How to solve: Temporarily, popping the battery out and putting it back in seems to reset the issue.  It doesn't happen very often, but I haven't found a consistent trigger other than trying to play a sound(any sound).  For good?  That's what I'm hoping you can tell me.  Could this be a bug with the way the current OS version on the 8330 hardware handles audio?  I hope this is something that can be fixed, or will be in the future.

  • Dust under screen - Curve 8330

I've had my BB Curve 8330 for almost two months now and I love it expect I've noticed a lot of dust is collecting under the screen.  I've tried using compressed air to remove it but with little success.  I contacted my service provider (Alltel) about this and they told me they weren't aware that this was a problem.
Is anyone else having this problem?  Is there an easy way to remove the dust?  Thanks!

You need to open the phone and try to blow the dust or clean it with a wet towel. I think it would be better to go and get serviced.
