Mountain Lion DVD Player not working

When I insert a DVD movie into my MacBook Pro, with Mountain Lion, it can not read the disk and ejects it.  DVDs played correctly until installing OSX Mountain Lion...what changed and how to resolve

Yep, me too.  Not sure if it is just coincidence and my drive was about to fail?  I have a 13" Macbook Pro Mid 2010.
To be honest I installed Mountain Lion as soon as it came out and have only just tried the DVD player today....
In my System Profiler I get the attached - it says Powered Off: Yes.
I have tried Repair Disc Permisions/PRAM/SMC/Removed Drive and cleaned - no joy.
Any other people out there with this?
Adrian.

  • DVD Player Not Working - Need Help Please!

My eMac is currently not reading DVDs. The drive will recognize and automatically play commercial music CDs and software, as well as burned music CDs. However, when a commercial DVD is inserted into a drive, not only will the DVD player not recognize or play it, the eMac does not even notice that there is a DVD in the disk drive.
Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    hi there--
there are a number of things for you to try. one is to do a pmu reset. instructions are found in step 6 of this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885 if you have an ati graphics emac or later, then the pmu button is on the right side, not the left. if that doesn't work, then try resetting the firmware. boot to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f and then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command will restart the computer. if neither of those things works, then i would try booting to the install disk and running disk utility. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 if that fails, then i would create a test user (system preferences > accounts, then hit the plus sign) and see if there is any difference there. let me know how that is going for you. Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • DVD Player not working with LION

DVD Player crash in 10.7.2 LION - at the start of DVD Player loading -  is there a work around - I use VLC no problems

    Thanks.
That is correct. I've determined that Default Folder X won't be the problem on my friend's MB Pro since they don't use the application. They are off for some One on One time with Apple to get to the bottom of this apparent upgrade problem with Lion.
On a personal note, my MB Air is not able to make use of the Remote Disc feature. I'm not sure if this might be network related as I only see the MacPro drive occassionally and am never able to make a full connection to share Word files on a CD etc.
I'll work on this more after xmas.
    Happy Holidays!

  • Dvd player not working with os lion

my dvd player has stopped working since I installed Lion

Can't really be sure that you're having the same problem since the OP never posted back about their problem and we don't know what it is, so.... have you tried an SMC and PRAM reset? That is sometimes helpful:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
I also assume you have it set to show the icon on the desktop, open it with the app of your choice, etc, etc? If other Macs read the CD, then there might be a problem with the drive. A good way for a free diagnostic session would be to make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar - any out of warranty repair would not be free of course, but at least you'd know what is going on.

  • Apple DVD player not working on Mid 2011 iMac running 10.7.2

I have a 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 iMac which came with Lion preinstalled.  When I insert a DVD, Apple's DVD player comes up with the following error:
"A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"
The DVD player works.  I can play DVDs using VLC, and I can use it to burn in iDVD, but Apple's own DVD player simply will not recognize it.  I hoped this problem might be solved when I upgraded to 10.7.2, but alas it has not.
Does anyone know how to fix or work around this issue?  This computer is used daily for my media-heavy job, so leaving it somewhere for service is not really feasible unless I'm completely unable to work on it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the player and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • DVD player not working with superdrive on Mavericks

Hi, I have installed Mavericks on my MacBook Pro. I have two SSD HDD and no internal optical drive. I am using the Superdrive externally through USB. It worked fine under Mountain Lion. Right after installing Mavericks when inserting a DVD DVD Player came up with the message "Initializing error on drive". Hope anybody has found the solution. Ca't find any answers anywhere.

    Hooray I got it working!!
Vishva's advice was correct but incomplete, the important part that was missing is that you need to replace ALL occurences of the word 'internal' with 'external' when you hexedit the file he recommended, I found the following web link with the full instructions.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20070591-263.html
Incidentally, when I tried to edit the file directly I was given an error saying it was read only and wouldn't allow me to edit it, so what I did was save the file to a new name, make all the edits and then copy the new file into the correct directory, then using terminal issue the following commands
    cd /System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A
then once you are in the directory containing the old and new framework file you need to copy the old file to a backup name for safe keeping, so issue the following command:
    sudo cp DVDPlayback DVDPlayback-backup
Then rename the new file you created (replace {yourfile} with the name you stored it as!) to the live one using:
    sudo cp {yourfile} DVDPlayback
If you list the files in this directory using the following command you should see all the files and their ownership and permissions:
    ls -alh
all files should be owned by 'root', if the newly created file is owned by your username, in my case it was, then you can change its ownership by typing the following:
    sudo chown root DVDPlayback
I then exited terminal, rebooted just to be on the safe side, and hey presto the DVD drive now works perfectly, shame apple didn't put something in place in mavericks to check for this, maybe they will in future updates...
Hope this helps anyone having the same issues, and thanks Vishva for pointing me in the right direction!

  • Mountain Lion feature preferences not working

Ever since Mountain Lion was released some of the new features preference panes wont open for me. Every time I try to open one, my Settings app just freezes and I have to force quit it. Things that wont open: Security & Privacy and adding Twitter and Facebook accounts. My Messages app doesnt even work, I can send and recieve but nothing shows up in the app. I've been looking online and trying many different things (removing preferneces, adding preferences from another account where they work) and I have a test account where everything works. Any other things I could try?
EDIT: I forgot to add that my AppStore freezes everytime I open it too. I can view the Updates Tab but if I click anything else it freezes.

    Hi,
IF you have another computer you can transfer things like an whole Users account  to your Mac or in some cases you can transfer the whole thing, Applications, And Users normally.
There can be issues with this as some Applications may not work in a newer OS
Some Preferences (what is kept in the .plists in the User's Library/Preferences) may not work properly with newer version of the apps they go with.
For example iChat in Lion has been replaced by Messages and iChat 6 should  not be installed /Transfered/Migrated to Mountain Lion
Repair Permissions is done with the Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder.
I am not sure the Disk Utility is accessible on a Restore Boot (CMD+ R)
This could be really simple such as the Contacts app > My Card (Head And Shoulders icon) not being set to your details and App like Messages that make use of the info can't read it.
On the other hand it could be a lot deeper than than and you may need to Restore the whole OS (CMD + R on Start up)

  • DVD player not working in Pavilion DV6-6102sa

The DVD player in my laptop won't play video DVDs.
It works okay with data discs, but films etc cause a problem - the drive spins up, and it sounds as though it's trying to read the disc, but not succesfully.
Depending on the player depends on what happens:
Windows Media Player may begin showing a garbled and unwatchable version of the disc, whereas VLC won't play anything. After a delay of at least 15 minutes (highly variable), the disc begins playing normally in both.
According to device manager, the drive is a HP DVDRAM GT31L. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I've tried many different DVDs, all with the same result, and I've tried both Windows Media Player and VLC with equally useless results.

To repair permissions go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk utility -> select the hard disk in Disk Utility, and click on repair permissions in the First Aid section.
Did you mean to mark my thing as helpful, or solved? I see you marked it solved suggesting the problem has gone away.

  • CD/DVD player not working (Toshiba Satellite L875d-S7232)

I purchased a  (Toshiba Satellite L875d-S7232) on August 17, 2012 from a major retailer. Recently, the CD/DVD player will not play, or even recognize, commercially produced DVD movies. As a consequence, I cannot rent or buy movie DVDs, nor will any of the DVDs in my library work now. The DVD player in this Satellite is TSST SN-208AB.
What happens is that when you put a movie DVD in the machine, the light goes on 4 times, but the DVD player never spins up and starts playing. In the explorer, the CD/DVD icon is there, but when you try to "open" the DVD player it never spins up and a green bar goes, very slowly, across the top of the window.
The player has no trouble with audio CDs.
I have spent about 10 hours on this problem now. What I have tried followed all of the standard "fixes" for this specific problem on this specific machine and the correct OS (Windows 7 Home Premium). None of the standard fixes fixed anything.
    In Brief :
    1. I uninstalled all programs which use the DVD player, except for the standard suite that came with the computer at time of purchase. Also, uninstalled all CODEC packages that were not part of the original suite.
    2. Uninstalled the CD/DVD device and driver, as instructed, and the device and driver were automatically reinstalled. Did a full power cycle (including removal of the battery). I've done this solution about 4 times.
    3. Looked in the registry for a possible filter driver issue. There was none.
    4. Used Microsoft "Fix It" program, which discovered "a problem" but had no description of the problem or a reference to a fix.
    5. Ran the device driver update check, toshiba service station check, microsoft update check. All files are up to date and the correct file.
    6. Ran system files check, HDD corruption check. No problems reported.
Nothing done so far has moderated or altered the behavior in any way. Moreover, I have noted dozens and dozens of people on the internet in different forums with the same problem. What this means is that Toshiba is losing market share bigtime on this one.
    Any fix would be appreciated.

Hi Sense no one has replied, I will offer my 2 cents. DVD drives wear out and they also get dirty. You could try to clean it with compressed air. DVD drives are fairly cheap and very easy to replace.
    Dokie!!
I Love my Satellite L775D-S7222 Laptop. Some days you're the windshield, Some days you're the bug. The Computer world is crazy. If you have answers to computer problems, pass them forward.

  • Mountain lion wifi is not working properly

After installing the Mountain Lion in my imac late 2011 model, 27",  it started to show wifi errors. I tried to restart the system to see if the wifi connects back or not. It shows as connected but not possible to browse the net.
I then turned-off & turned-on the wifi alone and I found it got connected and was able to browse. Few minutes after the browsing the wifi connection went off and was not able to browse.
I repeated the same rectification method and was able to get back to the web browsing. Several times since mt. Lion is installed I experienced and it is now three days.
Any one experienced the same errors and found a permanent solution please share the method.
    Thanks

    Hello you all,
I also had the problem of a disconnecting wifi while my imac was sleeping. I did not have the reconnecting issue after sleep, but the lost connection issue during sleep which made it impossible to reach my imac for things like homesharing, apple tv or remote desktop. I have a late 2012 iMac with a clean ML 10.8.2 on it and wirelessly connected to an apple time capsule (same as an airport extreme). My partner has a mid 2007 iMac, also with an ML 10.8.2 on it.
I tried every single solution I could find on the internet, such as changing the router's security from wpa2 to wpa, changing the MTU from automatic to manual 1453, router reboots, re-installations, re-configurations, keychain clean-ups, everything.
Eventually I solved my problem with these steps and now it works as a charm. I can still find the iMac with the remote app, even after 12 hours of sleep:
My time capsule router is set on automatic MTU and encrypted with WPA2 and I use  the 5Ghz network!
    1. Cleaned all the wifi passwords in keychain on my iMac
    2. Created a new network location in system preferences
    3. In this location I deleted the bluetooth pan and bluetooth dun connection.
    4. In this location I changed the preferred connection-order to wifi on #1 and ethernet on #2.
    5. Restarted my iMac.
Now I still have a connection when it sleeps and I can wake it to low profile using the remote app (homesharing) and everything works fine.
Hope more people wille be helped by this.

  • Mountain Lion Mail Searching not working (entire search)

    Hello,
I already searched the web and the topics in this forum, but found no help.
Since my update from 10.7 to 10.8 (with a clean install and a transition of my user data) the search 'Entire Message' oder 'any' does not work anymore. It shows no results.
This is very strange since Spotlight is still able to find content inside Mail messages.
There are some posts for similiar questions suggesting to rebuild either the whole spotlight index or just rebuild the mail index.
Others suggest to rebuild the mail database by either deleting the files inside the folder of the library or use the menu command in Mail.
Others suggest to check the rights of the mail folder and its content inside the user's library folder.
I tried all of this. Nothing helped yet.
    Thanks for help
    carl

I really tried everything but nothing helped.
But finally I solved the problem.
I made a timemachine backup (just for safety reasons).
Then I installed Mountain Lion again over the existing installation.
(I used a USB Stick with Mountain Lion to do that.)
    Now everything works great.
