Mountain lion installation query

Friends,
I have a MacBook Pro which came with snow leapord. Then I upgraded it to oS X Lion.
This new installation happened over the existing OS, that was snow leapord.
Now with new oS update which is coming today, I'm sure it will be installed on Lion. Which means a lot of junk from snow leapord and Lion will remain in the MacBook which would make it even slower then now.
My query is, can we just format the Mac disc and install fresh mountain lion? If, yes, how?

If your machine came with the Snow Leopard install disk, you can just boot to your installation disc, erase your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard. Then make sure that you do the combo 10.6.8 update and you'll be ready for ML. Make sure that you have a backup, of course, before erasing your hard drive.
Honestly, I wouldn't be worried about any 'left over' files from previous operating systems. Those will be erased or overwritten by the new version of OS X. There really won't be any 'junk' files. If you have extensions, etc., that are incompatible with ML, they will be placed in a folder on your root directory.
If your machine is slow, it's probably due to other problems than the OS. If I were you, I'd just do the ML upgrade and if your machine is still running slowly report back here.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • HT1338 Mountain Lion installation was interrupted - can't restart the download.

My Mountain Lion installation was interrupted.  Now, when I try to download, it won't do it.  After clicking "Download" it pauses for a moment, and then nothing happens.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks!

The server is too busy and your connection timed out with the server. Try doing this at night because there is less traffic.

  • Can't boot Mountain Lion installer on a machine that already has Mavericks installed

I have upgraded my Mac mini 2012 to Mavericks, and everything is running quite well.  However, I need to also run Mountain Lion (a piece of hardware I need to use is not Mavericks compatible.)
I am attempting to install Mountain Lion on a 2nd partition on my Mini's internal hard drive by following the following steps:
    * used Disk Utility to repartition my mini's internal drive, creating a 100 GB partition to install Mountain Lion on
    * used DiskMakerX to create a Mountain Lion bootable USB key
    * rebooted machine while holding down Option
At this point the boot menu appears and I see icons for both my Mavericks partition, as well as the Mountain Lion installer USB key.  However when I select the USB key and try to boot from it, it does not boot; instead I get a gray screen with the universal "no" symbol (circle with a slash through it) on it.
I tested the USB key on another Mac and it booted fine, so there is nothing wrong with the USB key I made.  So it would seem that the Mountain Lion installer will refuse to run on a computer if it has a newer OS on it, even if the computer has a free partition (or drive) to install on to.
Is there any way around this restriction?

    Hi,
to calm your nerves: on my computer I have CS3 and CS4, and I work with both versions, but of course, I never use them at the same time. First, I had CS3, CS4 I installed later.
All the keyboard short cuts, like yours work free from defects.

  • Mountain Lion installer will not let me choose my Lion Partition as an install location

Mountain Lion installer will not let me choose my Lion Partition as an install location.
    Any ideas why?

Again, why will the Mountain Lion installer not allow me to select my Lion partition as the location for the install?
Good question. That's the main way it's supposed to be installed. You shouldn't even need to choose a partition. You purchase Mountain Lion through the App Store, it downloads to the Applications folder and automatically begins the installation on the drive where Lion or Snow Leopard resides as soon as the download is complete.

  • Need help with Os X Mountain Lion Installation

I have a Macbook Pro (early 2011) 2.3Ghz and Everytime I boot up my macbook this Os X Mountain Lion screen pop up but when I try to install it. A message pop up saying ‘"temperaly unavailable try again ‘later" and sometimes "please contact apple care". I need help getting pass this installation so I can start using My macbook pro. Have you downloaded the Mountain Lion installer from the App Store? It is a stand alone application.

  • Where can I find my mountain lion installer included with 2012 mac mini

I just bought a 2012 mac mini and I want to install mountain lion on an SSD that I bought separately.  Where can I find the mountain lion installer file to create a bootable USB install drive?  When I go to the mac app store, mountain lion is not listed in my purchases and when I try to buy it, it says "We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer."  It's already installed on the mac mini, I just need the installer file so I can install it on my SSD.

You might be able to simply boot into the ML Recovery HD, select Reinstall OS X and point to your SSD drive. You won't capture the InstallESD.dmg file to create a USB thumb drive installer.
OR.... to create a USB thumb drive of your pre installed ML, you would need to redownload Mountain Lion then grab the InstallESD.dmg file and create your USB thumb drive. Here is how I've done it using Internet Recovery to get my pre installed OS X.
Attach a USB external drive to your system. Formated as Mac OS Extended (Journal) and GUID partition table.
Restart using Command+R+Option to boot into Apple's Recovery HD. This will get you the original version. Or just Command+R to boot into your ML Recovery HD.
Select Reinstall OS X from the OS X Utilities menu.
You will  have to watch the download. After it completes and your system restarts, at the black screen disconnect the external USB drive.
After you are back to your current desktop, insert the external USB drive. There should be a single folder on the drive called 'Install Data' (I think). Find the InstallESD.dmg file and copy it to a folder on your current system (Downloads, for example).
Follow any of the internet instructions to create a ML USB thumb drive.
I tried this method, and while it did get me the installer image, when I restored it to an external and tried to use it to restore a Late 2012 Mac Mini, I got the same "No" symbol I did with other ML installers.
Here are some screenshots of what was loaded onto my external before I yanked it, when the screen turned black durring the restart. The highlighted file is what I restored to my external to use to restore the Mac Mini.

  • 2008 iMac won't turn on after Mountain Lion installation

I have a 2008 iMac with 6GB of RAM that was running on OS X 10.6.8 perfectly. Tonight I upgraded it to Mountain Lion. After the installation, my machine was running slower and a little choppy, especially when first opening programs, even though it meets all the requirements for Mountain Lion. After about an hour or two of running like this, I was standing away from the computer for a minute when I saw a flash come from the monitor. I went to it and the screen was black. I thought maybe it had went to sleep, but nope! It was completely off and would not turn back on. No lights or sounds come on at all. There was no power outage or anything, and all other devices plugged into the same surge protector were working fine. I tried plugging it into another outlet and still had no luck.
Any insight onto what caused this? Is it most likely a power supply failure, and could this have been caused by the Mountain Lion installation? Considering I've had this computer for almost 5 years and this has never happened before, it seems obvious that this contributed somehow.
Any advice would be appreciated. I'm going to try to take it to an Apple store soon, but the earliest appointment is a few days away.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It's quite possible that the power supply failed. The failure is difficult to be related with OS X Mountain Lion, so I would discard that. In some cases, it's normal that you experience slowness after installing a new OS X version because Spotlight indexes the hard drive.
The best you can do is to take it to an Apple Store or reseller so you can get your Mac diagnosed. Now we can't do anything else apart from thinking that is a power supply issue

  • Prevent Mountain Lions Installer Automatic Delete

I want to do a clean reinstall of Mountain Lion on my MacBook.  I recently learned how to do it, yippee!  However, in following the instructions that supposedly an 8 year old could follow, I hit a brick wall.  I could not find the application/installer.  I searched and searched banging my head in frustration.  Then I discoverd that, after download, it is automatically deleted.  Anyway, I apparently need to re-download the app from the app store.  Is it that simple first?  Second, how do I ensure it is not automatically deleted upon download.  I hope that makes sense.  It is my intent to first, make my current MacBook Pro back to original settings.  Second, it is my intent to create a boot disk with a flash drive to install Mountain Lion on two other MacBooks (it is my understanding I can use it on up to 5 of my machines).  Thanks in advance.

    BigSky13 wrote:

Correct. As you purchased it in the past, you can download it as many times as you want for free, from App Store or starting into Recovery (pressing Command and R keys while your Mac is starting). If you want to download the installer, you have to download Mountain Lion from the App Store.

It's only deleted when you upgrade OS X, but if you download the OS X Mountain Lion installer and you don't install it, you won't get it deleted

To do it, first download OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store. Then, use Lion Diskmaker to create the USB drive with Mountain Lion > http://liondiskmaker.com
You can upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion all your Macs without any problem, so you don't have to worry about paying OS X Mountain Lion again to install it in your other Macintoshes

  • Mountain lion installation pauses

Tried to reinstall mountain lion and right after installation says complete then reboots, on start up spinning wheel tuns for about 3 minutes then stops spinning and computer never boots fully. Anyone else having this problem?
Only work around for me is to boot to safe mode, but I think the installation is corrupted because contacts, reminders and iPhoto all crash upon opening.

I do not understand what your problem is. Might you actually explain your problem before you start posting Console entries.

  • Help! UI mountain lion installation

    Hi All (Updated)
I have a mac mini (circ. 2010). its UI becomes non-responsive after it wakes up displays from sleep. The UI seems frozen. When the displays are asleep, moving the mouse or punching the keyboard wakes the displays up. (I have two)
When I move the mouse to hot corners, even though I don't see the mouse cursor, the displays fall asleep.  Rebooting the machine of course brings back the mouse and So it doesn't seem to be a bluetooth hardware issue.  Rebooting the system brings back the UI resposiveness, until mini displays are put to sleep again.
The behavior just started after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  The computer doesn't have any rogue processes, and it hasn't crashed.  I can ssh into the box. The system and process are behaving nicely.  I can see the shares on the mini and manipulate them from another machine.  I cannot, however, connect via "Share Screen"... That seems to just cycle.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated
    Ahmed.

Yes, restart the computer and then run Software Update. If you still have trouble then your installation or download may have become corrupted. This would mean you need to start over or take the machine into your local Apple Store or AASP for them to help you. If you have been backing up then it shouldn't be too painful.

  • Is my OS X Mountain Lion installation vulnerable to security threats?

    Hello dear community members,
I am a bit concerned about my OS X installation being vulnerable to known security threats which may not have been patched. Also came across an article:
    http://www.zdnet.com/os-x-mountain-lion-users-no-more-security-updates-700002232 2/
What are your thoughts on this and how are you handling this issue?
I can not upgrade my mac to Mavericks because I need to use some software which is only compatible with Mountain Lion.

    Aceattack wrote:
It is not Apple's responsibility to ensure 3rd party compatability however the concern was that Apple continue to support and provide security fixes for old OS X versions rather than force people to upgrade just because Mavericks is a free upgrade.
But Mavericks is a free upgrade. And any Mac that runs Mountain Lion will also run Mavericks.
It is standard procedure to discontinue support for old products. I will quote the AppGate on the topic:
Important note: End of Life AppGate Version 9*
After due consideration, Cryptzone is declaring End of Life (EOL) on AppGate Security Server v9.x This became effective on October 30, 2013. Full support will continue to be provided for AppGate Security Server v9.x up until the end of Q2 2014 After this time any customers wishing to continue to receive support and updates must move to version 10.x (or newer). Most customers have already migrated, but if you have any still on this version please work with them to migrate to version 10.x.
Why is it acceptable for one company to stop supporting an old product but unacceptable for another? And why do I suspect that the AppGate upgrade is not free?
If you depend on AppGate and eToken and those products do not run on Mavericks, you should be asking why. Like all developers, they have had access to Mavericks since early June. What was so radically different about Mavericks that takes over 7 months get working? Either they aren't very committed to the platform or they really don't know how to write OS X software. Considering that the product seems to be Java-based, I suspect both.
That is an interesting conundrum that is pretty typical for enterprise customers. You are running an old OS version without security updates because you depend on 3rd party security software that depends on 4th party Java software proven to be one of the last major malware conduits. And people wonder why these enterprise servers are always the ones to get hacked and hand over 45 million customer records.
I feel your pain. I only recently updated my work machine to Mountain Lion due to similar enterprise security issues. Our market-leading antivirus vendor that protects us against the latest zero-day malware was unaware or just didn't care that Apple had released a new OS. And I'm talking about Lion! I have similar problems with my Java-based Juniper VPN. The Apple-provided VPN works fine, as it always has. And I can't really do without my Mac because I need it to develop on when my Linux servers with 24x7 on-site support from IBM and Oracle are out of commision for 4 months. Apple is not the cause of either of our problems.

  • Mountain lion installation failing

    Hi,
After downloading Mountain Lion about 3 times, it is still failing. I browse thru the next and tried the various tips such repair the folder permissions, ensure that the mac is up to date. However, it still doesn t work. Any other tips or procedure that I could follow to ensure a proper installation. Thanks,

Also, I should mention that reviewers on Amazon have successfully used this hard drive with Macbook Pros. Unless it's an issue with Mountain Lion specifically it should be compatible.

  • Mountain Lion installation fails at license agreement

I am running a Mac Mini with 10.6.8 OSx, with 4 GB of Ram, 2.07GB of which is free space.  I have been having sluggish performance, and even after using Time Machine to Backup my hard drive to an external hard drive, and subsequently removing all my music, movies etc from my computer and freeing over 250 GB, it is still very sluggish.
When I tried to download Mountain Lion from the Apps Store I ran into issues.  It would freeze and get stuck on the spinning wheel, wherein I'd force quit the download.  I performed disk permission repairs many times, and finally got it to download.  Now when I am running the installation, every time I get to the Software License Agreement window, the installation fails and more spinning wheels.
I only have one external hard drive and DO NOT want to erase all my files as I have nowhere else to transfer them to in order to create a bootable drive.  What are my options, it is a little ridiculous how it has taken me several days worth of attempts and gotten nowhere.
Could it be that I need more RAM?  As stated earlier, I have 4GB of total space, with 2.07 GB free.  I understand the OSx is 4.7GB, does this mean I need to upgrade my RAM as well.  From what I understand my friend has the same Mac Mini but with a 2GB RAM space and was able to install it without issues so I am at a loss for ideas.  Help me Obi Wan Kenobis...

I do not have the Installation DVD.  I bought my mac mini off of Craigslist and it did not come with the disks.  As far as I am aware, I am unable to reinstall the OSX without the installation DVD.  If I am mistaken I would appreciate some help on how to to reinstall it.
I did delete the ML installation file and downloaded it again, but am experiencing the same error.  This is the detailed report I get which seems to be a language identifier issue:

  • System Crash Screen after Mountain Lion Installation

I tried to install Mountain Lion on 2 different MacBook Pro Laptops, one newer 15" running latest version of OSX Lion and the other a 13" running latest updated OS as well.  I can download the software, it goes through download, starts the app, I get the app started on the install and then let it do it's thing, when I return to check on it I get a screen full of numbers and text with the error message that states you have to press and hold power to turn off.  The same kind of screen you get when your system crashes and can't run.
Not sure if it's when it's trying to reboot or if its when the OS is installing.  I run little snitch and gave the app full access on all ports to the Internet, but not sure.  The 13" MP wasn't connected to anything except a LAN cable, no external monitor or keyboard or even a mouse.  Just the laptop itself.
The 15" is connected to display, keyboard, mouse and an external hard drive.
The only way I was able to fix, was to reboot using Command R to get into recovery mode and restore from backup using Time Machine worked perfectly fortunately.
Any ideas on why it wouldn't install? or how to fix?
I even made sure to close down all applications first prior to installing.
The only thing I didn't do was to disable Time Machine, not sure if it tried to kick off during the installation and that made it crash or not?

I disabled Time Machine and tried it again.  This time I watched it.  It ran the first part of the application and then rebooted.  When it rebooted it came up with the following text screen with the window to reboot hold down power button:

  • Macbook Pro won't reboot after mountain lion installation.

I installed the new Mountain Lion o/s and the installation was sucessful. However, when the computer started to
reboot by itself, it just stuck on the grey screen with the logo and the turning wheel. It has been like this for hours.
What should I do to fix this problem? Please help. The computer was purchased during Christmas 2011.

Call Apple support and they can talk you through getting back to a restore.
It appeared that my disk was a little corrupt before performing the upgrade.  You should use diskutility to verify and repair your disk before doing this upgrade.
Or just hold the option key down on boot up to see if you can get to the restore utility.
