Mountain Lion OS upgrade on MBP 2008?

Would you suggest upgrading a MBP 2008 with the Mountain Lion OS? My computer runs like the day I bought it but im concerned with all the chit chat about compatibility that I may get myslf into trouble here.... I do have Lion on it currently and have no issues......

Before upgrading consider:
Don't upgrade if you are in the midst of important work. Wait until you have finished.
If you are having problems with your computer get them sorted out before you upgrade.
Verify that any mission critical software will be compatible with the upgrade.
Do you need the upgrade?
Make a bootable backup of your current system before upgrading. This will make returning to your previous system easier should you decide to do so.

Looks like the Silicon Image drivers were moved to the incompatible software folder during install/upgrade.
Downloaded latest drivers, errored out of install claiming that the drivers were from an unknown author!!!

    Hi Fred,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

I have a macbook pro and the software with snow leopard only has upgraded to 10.5.8, do I need to purchase mountain lion to upgrade to 10.6.8?

Your machine likely can't handle Mountain Lion 10.8 nor 10.7, if it does it will run slow and very higly likely a lot of your third party software and drivers for printers and scanners won't function anymore.
It's because your 10.5 era (or earlier) machine is rather dated, hardware has advanced and is faster, the newer OS X versions have gotten bloated.
I do recommend you call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks, backup your personal data off the 10.5.8 Mac to a external storage drive and when the disk arrives, stick it in and run the upgrade installer.
Once that's finished, reboot and use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and stay there. You can buy stuff from AppStore, just don't upgrade to 10.8 (or 10.7) as thats when you'll have issues.
10.6 should run your currrently installed PPC software and hardware drivers. But 10.7/10.8 will not.
10.6 is receiving security and other updates from Apple as more than 50% of OSX users are still on it.

  • Is mountain lion worth upgrading from lion

is mountain lion worth upgrading from lion

That is a question you really have to answer...go to http://www.apple.com/osx and check the features in ML...are they features that are important to YOU?  Do you want to text message from your computer?  Use the other features that are an integral part of iOS/  For me the huge factor is the added speed of ML...Safari for me is significantly faster...the whole system is faster.  I really like ML...but there are others on here who disagree.
Go through the features and see how important they are to you then decide.

Just updated my iPad 2 to OS7 and now I can't connect it to iTunes 10 on my MacBook OS 10.5.8
My MacBook is too old and  can't be updated to Mountain Lion as it is early 2008 white MacBook.
It all worked perfectly prior to updating the iPad 2 to OS7.
There were no cautions or warnings
    Are there any work arounds?
Can I uninstall OS7 and go back to OS6?
Rediculous thing is I can connect to iTunes on an old PC of the same age

Thanks for your comments but this doesn't help my situation at all.
Again Apple fails to provide backward support for its own products.
I could go to the trouble of hacking the MacBook and running Mountain Lion and iTunes 11 that way
I think I will just move across to a PC as a result of this Apple strategy and I think I will just give up on Apples short lived product strategy.
A laptop that lasts five years indicates a long lived product strategy.  Where they go wrong is to prevent backwards strategy when someone genuinely cannot live with ios7 like you. even the "unsupported" downgrade has now been blocked.
Don't go windows,  you will not get five good years from a dell or an asus. If you can't buy Mountain Lion for it,  get a new macbook, enjoy.

    Plz Help

You are not alone in this, Maddy. I had the same thing happen. Apple obviously sent incorrect codes that redeemed for OS X Server instead of Mountain Lion. I called Apple Care who said that it must be some server fluke and that they would get back to me within 24 hours.

  • 2008 MPB (OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion) to late 2013 MBP (Mavericks) - Backup

    Hi
    I have a 2008 Macbook Pro w/ OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion.  I ordered a late 2013 Macbook Pro 15"
I purchased a 2TB external hard drive.  I am thinking to not use time machine, but instead, start from "scratch" with the new MBP.  That is, backup my files and software install files to the external drive.  Then, when I get the new MBP, install the s/w and copy the files I would want on it (not everything as the current MBP drive I have is 1TB and the new MBP will have the 512GB SSD)
Then, when I have the new MBP setup, I could start using Time Machine etc.. and sell my old MPB
I wanted to get feedback on this, is this a bad idea to start from scratch?  I figured it might be easier since I dont have Mavericks now, and starting from scratch would be less headache since the new MBP has mavericks already, and it will be a smaller HD, and I have read about issues people have with s/w not working when migrating or upgrading to Mavericks.
I dont use ITunes, just have a lot of folders of MP3s.  I do use IMovie, and read, that you can copy your movie folders/projects over to an external hard drive and save them there, and whichever ones I might want on the new MPB, I could copy over.
I also use VirtualBox, but I figure, it would be better to copy the Virtual Image files over and install VirtualBox from scratch as well.
I also code (python, java), but it is not an intricate development environment that I have setup.
    Thanks

I too am a fan of it.  That said, i just did two plain old upgrades from 10.6.8 on advice from people here. Both worked just fine.
If you clean install, i would first make a regular, old-fashioned bootable clone. My preferred method is Carbon Copy Cloner ($40).  Then you have a) a way to go backwards in a pinch, b) a complete backup, and c) a way to get access to the individual files and move them over.
test that your machine boots from the external drive.
Beware, some od the file locations (mail is prominent) have moved.  You may have some challenges there.
Your "home" library folder is also now hidden, you can un-hide it by "go" finder menu, hold own option, and select Library (magic).
If you dont have locally stored mail folders it might be easier to just let IMAP rebuild.

  • Clean Install Mountain Lion on upgrade-SSD of a 2012 MBP

    Dear strangers,
I searched the internet for a while, but didn't seem to find an answer. I would like to buy the current MBP (non-retina) and upgrade the HDD with an SSD (since Apple prices are rather ridiculous). So I want do perform a clean install on this SSD, what is the best option? I understood that there are no installation disks anymore, but how do you perform a clean install on an 3rd party SSD when you bought a Mac(Book Pro) with Mountain Lion already installed on it? I know I could make a bootable USB drive, but then you need to have a disk image of the OS.
    Anyone? I need help quick!
    Thanks in advance,

This is the message that would happen with Lion, see this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
Basically when you setup a Raid 0/1, the Lion and Mt. Lion installer won't/can't create a recovery partition.
When you boot from a recovery partition you have access to certain tools, e.g. Disk Utility to restore a Time Machine back up, redownload the OS, etc.
The recovery partition provides a certain bit of convenience but isn't absolutely necessary to run the OS. When you see the message, doesn't it let you go ahead with the install, accepting that no recovery partition will be created?
If you need some of the recovery partition tools, you have a bootable USB stick as well as a backup of the Mt. Lion installer, no?

  • After Mountain Lion update on a MBP from 2008 the Logic board fails

    Hi there,
My Macbook Pro (A1226) lived happily until the day I updated to Mountain Lion.
After the successful update to the OS the screen started to flicker and the OS freezes.
This never happend before the update.
When I managed to recover from several Kernal Panics I found that the last driver loaded was the Display Driver which was loadad last before the crash.
I though it might have been a good idea to reinstall the old OS (Snow Leopard). But still the same issue.
The contact with the apple store was quick - but I really refuse to pay 461€ for a new logic board for

This approach was completly new to me, but anyway, usually if the specs are met, there is no reason installing new software on a 4 year old PC or notebook. Well Apple told me otherwise and I'm not happy about paying a fortune for standard Harware spare parts.
But actually noboby helped me so far.
It would be interessting to find out whether in the software update firmware updates were included. In this case Apple can pay for the repair.
