Mountain Lion OSx. Big problems following upgrade

i have just installed mountain lion OSx as an upgrade on MacBook Early 2009. Now various apps don't work e.g. iPhoto, iWork. Also Safari keeps crashing. Should I try to unistall and go back to my old reliable OS or try to sort it out as a complete novice ? All help greatly appreciated.

Back up all data.
Boot in safe mode.* This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.
When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, proceed as below.
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy into the Terminal window — do not type — and press return:
sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Reboot and test.

  • Mountain Lion OSX slow response after upgrade from Lion

I have issues now to open Microsift Outlook Mail application as it is very slow in opening and all this is after install OSX ML only, frustrating time again

Nilhan, I believe I found my problem which affected two machines running ML 10.8.  I found two Outlook preferences files - identical but for date - that I believe were causing a conflict.
It was intuition that led me to search for this.  I noticed the splash screen text was mentioning that Outlook was looking for identities on startup.  I'd never before noticed this, or it happened so quickly that I've never seen it.   In any event, I did a search for all files name "outlook" using the program EasyFind.  When the search completed, I sorted the found files by type.  I was looking for duplicate preferences - and I found them.
There were two folders named "Office 2011."  One was in (user) > Library > Preferences > Microsoft.  The other was in (user) > Library > Application Support > Microsoft > Office > Preferences.  These two identically named folders each had similar items enclosed, including a file named "Outlook Preferences."  The dates on the "Outlook Preferences" files were not the same, although they were the same size.  The date on the older file corresponds to a Microsoft Office update which was supposed to move things to locations required by Mountain Lion.  The older files (some of the file dates were current - yet duplicates in name of others) were in the location: (user) > Library > Preferences > Microsoft.
I moved the "Office 2011" folder located in (user) > Library > Preferences > Microsoft to the trash.  I did not empty the trash just out of caution, although I probably will ...or even archive them via a zip file, etc.  Next, I restarted my machine.  After logging in, I rebuilt the Outlook database using Microsoft Database Utility (hold the Option key and start Outlook to start it).  I then backed up my Main Identity to a separate disk as another caution.  Next, I once again restarted.
After giving the machine a little time to settle down, I opened Outlook 2011.  Outlook now opened many times faster then before.  I would venture to say that it is now opening as quickly as before the 10.8 ML install.  All functions within Outlook also seem to be at normal speed.
This process was repeated on another Mac with a new install of 10.8 ML and Office 2011.  I had tested Outlook on that machine, and it was slow.  After the deletion of the duplicate preference files, Outlook was fast as ever - noticeably very fast.  It was a vast difference on that machine.  The Main Identity database is much smaller on that machine than the previous machine, so it should be quicker.  Still, it was a tremendous difference in speed after I dumped the older preferences on it.
I am no expert on the workings of 10.8 ML compared to earlier versions of OS X, but I do understand that certain preference files are now required to be in a certain place ...different than earlier versions, or perhaps just mandating that all preference files be in a universal spot.  Something like that...  In any event, 10.8 ML was not the problem, but seems to have brought a problem to light.  If I am going to point a finger, I will point it at a Microsoft Office update that didn't quite do its job correctly.  There was trouble with an Office update not long ago, and I suspect I was a victim of that.
Maybe you are, too.  Hope this helps.

When upgrading from osx 10.7.4 to osx mountain lion I get the following Alert!  This update requires OS X version 10.8.

Sounds like you downloaded the 10.8.1 update instead of the Mountain Lion installer from the Mac App Store.
You have to purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store to get to 10.8

  • Lost use of word for mac 2004 when upgraded to mountain lion OSX

IVe just upgraded to Mountain Lion OSX and lost use of word for Mac 2004. how can i get in to work again

Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

I just upgraded to mountain lion osx and now my applications are crossed out and out of date. they will not run. how do i fix this?

Here is a recent post I assembled for a similar question:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open, modify and save your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

  • Mountain Lion OSX upgrade

Hi, during the upgrade to Mountain Lion OSX, I seem to have lost iPhoto altogether. Is there any way I can recover it without resorting to buying the App. Thank you.

It's not free but I think it's the best option for you.
    I'm also avoiding Yosemite.

Please stop asking about that on this forum.
There are plenty of informations on the Internet if you want to do it but nobody here will help, because is against the forum's rules.
And, you can't buy Mountain Lion if you do not have a Macintosh with at least Snow Leopard installed.
There is no physical media. Mountain Lion is provided by Apple through the Mac App Store.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Mountain Lion is a 64-bit operating system, and an Intel Core Duo processor is only 32-bit, so you can't use Mountain Lion on your Mac. You can keep using your actual OS X version or buy a new Mac if you want Mountain Lion

  • I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with bootcamp 3.3 on my Imac 2011. I need to updgrade to mountain lion. If I first upgrade to mountain lion, how do I go about upgrading from bootcamp 3.3 to latest bootcamp for mountain lion?

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with bootcamp 3.3 on my Imac 2011. I need to updgrade to mountain lion. If I first upgrade to mountain lion, how do I go about upgrading from bootcamp 3.3 to latest bootcamp for mountain lion?
I have seen a lot of discussions upgrading from Boot Camp 4 to 5 but no answers upgrading from boot camp 3.3 to 5. My worry is that if I upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion, that my bootcamp partition will no longer be able to boot up. There seem to be a lot of threads suggesting problems that are possible. Has anyone gone through this upgrade with success?

Before doing any installation restart OSX from your 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to Both Repair The Disk and Repair the Permissions of your Macintosh HD.
Next remove your Snow Leopard DVD and restart your iMac into OSX.
Update to the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard by clicking the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install Snow Leopard v10.6.8, the latest version.
Use Time Machine to make a Full Backup of your Macintosh HD.
Shut down and restart into Windows by holding the Option key at the chime and selecting Windows.
Now use Windows Backup to make a Full Image Backup of your Windows Installation to a removable drive.
Shut Down and Boot back into OSX.
Open the Mac App Store from your Dock to buy and download Mountain Lion. Then follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
Upgrading your OSX to 10.8 should not effect the Windows Partition at all since you are only upgrading the Mac side. You should not have to run the Boot Camp Assitant 5 Utility in OSX at all.
Your Boot Camp 3.3 Windows Support Drivers et. al only effect your Windows installation and should continue to run fine after upgrading.
Which version of Windows do you already have installed on the existing Boot Camp Partition?
Is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

  • How do I download purchased Mountain Lion OSX on my second Mac laptop?

How do I download purchased Mountain Lion OSX on my second Mac laptop?  The initial download was no problem on my MacBook Pro, but my MacBook already has Lion with only a little more than 2 GB of Memory left. This may be my compatibility problem.  Ideas?

I think you'll need to find a way to delete or move files to an external drive to free up some space. Generally, you want at least 10% free space on the HD for best performance. In your case, you probably will not get ML to install. Assuming you are talking about 2 GB of hard drive and nor 2 GB of RAM.

  • Paid Mountain Lion OSX

I bought a MacBook Pro that came with Mountain Lion OSX. Why is Mountain Lion still a paid app in my App Store?
Why cant i download the app for free?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If your Mac came with OS X Mountain Lion, you have to get OS X Mountain Lion from Recovery HD or Internet Recovery, not the App Store. That would be because your MacBook came with a special OS X Mountain Lion which isn't compatible with other computers.
When you want to reinstall OS X, start into OS X Recovery, holding Command and R keys while your Mac is starting, and reinstall OS X. You shouldn't have any problem, because OS X Mountain Lion will be downloaded from Apple because your computer is registered to your Apple ID

Mountain lion osx wifi keeps turning to the "off" setting by itself and when I try to turn it back on again it doesn't change from "off" to "on" Any ideas about whats wrong? The only way I can solve it is by restarting the macbook.
    I have a macbook pro
2.53 ghz intel core 2 duo
    8gb memory

You are running a pretty old version of the OS if your information is correct above and there have been quite a few improvements to the WiFi systems in recent releases.
You may want to try to reinstall the OS. If that does not work you may consider upgrading the OS.

The only thing that worked for me was to boot in safe mode.
Power down.  Then press power button and hold 'shift' key until grey screen with progress bar appears... Once booted and logged in just open safari and browse to applestore.
No trouble at all once I did this.
Reminder: create full backup before you upgrade OS
    Hope it helps.
