Mountain lion will not install because time machine uses hard drive for back up. What should I do?
I have downloaded Mountain Lion but it will not allow me to install because the time machine uses the hard drive to back up. How do I solve this problem?
Unless you are trying to install on an external hard drive that actually has been used for Time Machine backups, this is usually caused by having a folder named "Backups.backupd" on your hard drive somewhere. It may be at the root level of the hard drive, but may also be elsewhere. Try searching for it, and then delete it. (You shouldn't need it.)

Tried to upgrade from 10.7.4 on relatively new MBP. It appears that Mountain Lion successfully downloaded from App Store. However, ML will not install to the hard drive because "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer". Thanks for advice.
Try going through the steps described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3926.

Trying to install Snow Leopard, can't b/c time machine using hard drive
I am trying to install Snow Leopard so I can then upgrade to Lion on my MacBook Pro. (It's now running an older version of OS X. I went through this whole process successfully on my desktop.)
Snow Leopard is saying it can't install on my hard drive b/c Time Machine is using that drive for backups.
I tried turning off Time Machine but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
I don't have any available external drive at home-- is there a way to disable or change settings or uninstall Time Machine so that Snow Leopard will be able to install? Is the best way to get an external drive and specify that as the Time Machine backup drive? I'd rather just get rid of Time Machine on this computer for now, but I've read on here in other discussions that deleting it can cause other problems.
Thanks for any advice! The Apple store may use or have these...
You must repair the HD, your best bet is likely DiskWarrior.
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

Mountain lion will not install - messages says the hard drive is for time machine
basically i have gone thru the install process
I get to screen that asks which drive to install
I have 3 drives that show up
Mac-ssd
bootcamp
mac storage drive
it will not let me pick any drive(have not tried bootcamp)
it says that this drive is being used by time machine
lesnorvellYour Mac has a directory named Backups.backupdb located on it. If you have good time machine backups somewhere else, you can delete the directory and ML will allow you to select the drive.

HT201316 Mountain lion will not install and sends me to support/no-recovery
I can't load Mountain Lion since it doesn't support recovery any way around this glitch
Hi,
I had the same problem, unable to install Mountain Lion due to recovery problem. After a long investigation I found out that my Recovery HD partition was only 613.6MB and it should appearently be 650MB !
--- BEFORE ---
$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *120.0 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 119.1 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 613.6 MB disk0s3
What I did to solve this was to delete the Recovery HD partition using the following steps:
* In terminal window write the following: defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
* Go to Disk Utility where you now should have debug menu. Select the option to show all paritions.
* Delete your Recovery HD partition.
* Make sure that you have at least 650MB free on your OSX drive. If not decrease the size of your OSX partition.
* Install Mountain Lion and it will then automatically create a new Recovery HD partition.

S.M.A.R.T. error and Mountain Lion will not install
I downloaded Mountain Lion so I could use the iCloud with my iTunes for other devices and it says that there is a S.M.A.R.T. error on my hard drive and it cannot be installed. What can I do to fix this?
Hi, I too had the exact same thing happen. I called support on the phone and they suggested I bring my computer into the store. I took it in and the employee determined that the hard drive was failing and I was the third person that day with the same issue. Luckily, it is under warranty but they had to replace the hard drive. I still haven't gotten my computer back because they didn't have the parts. My advice - BACK UP NOW!

My OSX Mountain lion will not download because I have "no support"
I have a Macbook Pro, I bought the new software tonight and can't download it, help please!
I think the subject line and the signature is the necessary clue. Tjh14, your signature says you are running 10.7.5, this is just plain old Lion. Mountain Lion is 10.8 and above. Am I correct in assuming that your software says it needs Mountain Lion 10.8? If it does, then you need to upgrade to 10.8, which is a paid upgrade. You also need to make sure everything else you have is Mountain Lion compatible and backup your data before upgrading.

Firewire thunderbolt adaptor does not recognize my time machine external hard drive
Hi everybody. I have a retina MacBook Pro, and wanted to connect my time machine external HD to the mac using a firewire-thunderbolt adaptor.
I did so, but the HD does not show up in the devices menu. Any suggestion?
thank you for your help
GiulioHave you tried rebooting? If you share what type drive you have, perhaps others will share their experiences. Is your drive bus powered? I haven't had any trouble so far connecting through a TB-FW adapter to my external hard drive (Hitachi drive in an OWC case, bus powered).

Will Time machine use Icloud Storage for Back up How?
I purchases 50 MG of storage from Icloud but how do I transfer this to Time Machine ans activate backup?
You don't. iCloud does not provide general file storage - the storage is for synced data such as email, contacts, calendars, iWork documents and iPhone/iPad (not Mac) backups.
