Mounted drive is opening during start up.

Can any of you help me with the following problem? I have mounted a drive and you can have it automatically start up without having to connect them manually every time. However, you can avoid with a hide button that it opens in a screen every time you startup. Hide the selection does not work. Every time I boot the disk opens in a screen. Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix this? Thank you.

Howdy Scapin,
It sounds like you are using the Hide option in the Login Items to try to keep mounted servers from opening.
Check out
OS X Yosemite: Open items automatically when you log in
If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide.
Note:   Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.
You might want to try closing the server window before shutting down.
Best,
Nubz

  • CD drive always opens on start up

    Hi
I have a G4 Sawtooth OS 9.2.1. With an M7803 Mac keyboard. Works fine, except that the CD drive ALWAYS opens when I boot up, and I have to close it manually. Happens with or without extensions on/off ?

    Hi, GoneToLunch -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
That model Mac (as well as many others) is hardwired with a hardware startup instruction - if the mouse button is held down from the beginning of booting, it instructs the Mac to eject all removable media; effectively it instructs all drives capable of ejecting to do so regardless of whether there is anything in the drive.
If an attached USB device happens to send a signal which the Mac interprets as a mouse-down signal, that commad is sent to all such drives.
The culprit can be most anything USB, including any device, hub, or even the extension cable furnished with some G4's for use with the keyboard. Items which have been reported most often as causing this are an iMate adapter, a dongle, and a digitizing tablet.
The only way to find out which item is causing it is to test by trial and error - disconnect all USB stuff except keyboard and mouse, then test; add one or two usual items back in, test again. When the problem recurs, you'll know it was the last item reconnected.
Sometimes the offender can be prevented from causing this problem by isolating it, via a self-powered USB hub. Sometimes a reconfiguration of the USB connection scheme will do it, such as by using a different port for the offender. Sometimes nothing will help, and it becomes an inconvenience that must be tolerated if the device is needed.
Relatedly, perhaps, this Apple KBase article recommends that not much at all be connected to a keyboard's ports -

  • Prevent mounted drives to open new windows

Good morning everyone! Sorry if I'm making this post where I can't.
I'm having this tiny issue - I have an external 1 TB drive that's attached to my Mac all the time, and every time I log into my user, two disk images I have in the disk pops up a new finder window (the same kind of window that appears when I mount a .dmg file). Is there any way that I can disable that from happening?
GUI or file / terminal hacks are welcomed!

Although this is a valuable resource you've posted, it didn't solve my problem.
I tried what you've said: I tried to unmount the partition (It's a 10 GB partition containing the Mac OS X 10.6 Install DVD) before I powered off my Mac and hen I logged back in, bam, there it was, the window asking me to install. I tried to unmount the whole disk, and still, bam, it's there when I logged on.
I tried what's discussed in the article, and nothing. The terminal doesn't show anything, and there's no login item directly connected to that partition / image / disk.
I tried in my MacBook and in my Mac. Nothing.
It's when I login that appears: The HD is connected to my Mac and it has one (of 8~) partitions that is an image. That image is the Mac OS X Install DVD, and the window that has the "Install Mac OS X" item ALWAYS appears when I log in. It's really uncomfortable.
Any other thoughts? Thanks for the info, BTW, I can have that in mind for the future!

  • Mounted drive during backup

    Hi Everyone,
This is sort of a combination question...
    1. I did my initial backup overnight for 111GB. This morning, it was at 102GB and then seemed to complete at 104GB instead of going all the way to 111GB. Is this normal?
    2. The mounted drive during backup that says "Backup of Courtney's iMac" (in my case) did not un-mount after the backup completed. Isn't it supposed to?
Thanks for your help, whoever you may be!

  • CD/DVD drive opens on start and restart

This has been a problem ever since I installed 10.3.9 about a year ago.
Every single time I start up or restart the machine the CD drive pops open.
I'm running a 400 MHz PowerPC G4 (grey tower) and I've installed a LaCie CD/DVD drive. The drive was installed long before the upgrade to Panther and it was not a problem in OS 9 nor in 10.1.x.
Aside from being annoying, it means that I can't start from a CD, which I need to do to run things like Diskwarrior.
    400 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Are you using an Apple keyboard and mouse? I just did the firmware update on a 400MHz Sawtooth G4, and the problem you describe started happening to me. I was/am using a non-Apple keyboard and a PS2-USB converter to plug it into the Mac. I just did the 4.2.8 firmware upgrade, and now the drive tray opens on boot/startup. It didn't do that before the firmware upgrade! I hate it when updates/upgrades create more problems than they solve. Anyway, I borrowed a friend's Apple pro keyboard and mouse, and with those plugged in, everything is normal. So if you aren't using an Apple keyboard, you might try plugging one in to see if that fixes the problem.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • Open Audio Stream during Start Up

Open Audio Stream during Start Up
I would like to automatically open an audio stream during start up in OS X Tiger.
Placing an alias for the steam in the Accounts Log In Items of the System Preferences does not seem to work.
    Any ideas?

    Michael--
You ought to be able to do this with an AppleScript as an Account Login item. Just save the AppleScript as an application:tell application "iTunes"
    open location "http://www.server.com/streaming.mp3"
end tellYou'll need the URL for the stream...

  • 4.0 EA2 - Previously Open Files Not Opening on Start

Just started using 4.0 EA2 from 4.0 EA1.  Thanks!  Noticed is much faster than EA1!
I have noticed that previously opened files no longer are being opened when starting SQLDeveloper.  Prior to EA2, any files that were open when SQLDeveloper is closed were opened then next time SQLDeveloper started.  Is there a setting I am missing that governs this behavior?
    Thanks!

True but I think that the disk image mounter is not working so I'm not getting the option to drag anything anywhere. How do I repair the disk image mounter?
    Just tried after reading on a www forum;
    Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Click on "Macintosh HD in the left column and then press the "Repair Disk Permissions button. I don't think this step was part of the solution to my problem.
    Delete the file called /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
    Delete the folder called /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
    Restart
But the deleted files just re apear after start up and the issue continues.
There is no issue with the hard drive, also just booted to Disk Utility again and done a volume repair, no problems there. Grrrrrrrrrrr

    So far I have

    2) reinstalled FCP 5
    3) removed [boot/system drive]/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support folder.
Any problem solvers willing to take a stab at this one?

I opened up FCP in another user's account and it didn't abort during start-up. Retruned to my account and FCP opened without error.

  • Mac Pro during start up, chimes, apple logo then shuts down.  Just began

My Mac Pro (with Cinema Display) during start up, chimes, fan, apple logo then shuts down.  Just began. Will not complete the boot

The chime is generated in software when your Mac passes the Power-On Self Test. If a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
The dark gray Apple is not resident in any ROM. It can appear only after it is loaded from a boot device.
Your Mac will shut down during boot-up if the Boot Drive is so damaged that it cannot be mounted.
So focus your energy on repairing your Boot Drive using Recovery_HD or the 10.6 DVD, as appropriate.

  • HT1751 i bought a new, larger external hard drive. copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive. iTunes will not start or run unless old hard drive plugged in.??

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.
iTunes will not start or run unless the old hard drive is plugged in.
If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.
You can find the full article here:

  • How to remove a mounted drive at startup in a mobile account, using netinfo

How does one remove an mounted drive at startup in a mobile account, using netinfo?
One of the user automatically mounts a network drive on her new intel Macbook in her portable account. Trouble is that the network drive is only available on the intranet. So when she is on the road, it take the Macbook very long 3-4 minutes before it let's her log in.
Simply I thought to remove the drive on her macbook through the system preferences -> account -> login items. However the "login Item" GUI is very slow to respond and if it respond it does not let me remove the network drive. I tried this both on the intranet and off the network.
I tried to remove the mounted drive at start up through the workgroup manager, but it does not show up there.
So I thought that I try to use netinfo on the local machine. But I can't find where mounting info is stored in a mobile account. I thought it would be in the local @ localhost or should I connect to an other DB?

The login items are not stored in Netinfo, they are stored in loginwindow.plist in the users Library/Preferences. You can either remove the entries for the server or simply trash that file and let a default one get recreated.

  • External hard drive isnt opening on iMac

Hi everyone, I was advised to post a different discussion instead of having two questions in one, (good tip thank you)
So here is my second questions.
My other problem is that i want to get all my photos onto the imac.  My hard drive wont open on my imac - (buffalo HD-PXT500U2/B)  it recognises its there but wont aloow me to actually open it to view any file. (Also mac compatible.)
I called apple support again to see if there was anything i can do, the only thing they suggested was that i have to reformat my hard drive (which would mean loosing all the info on there).  They suggested putting all my info on my PC, reformatting the EHD, then sucking up all the info again on my EHD, then giving it to my imac.  Apart from the fact that i dont think my PC could handle 500 GB of info on it at this stage - this would take days.  (currently to download 15GB of data takes an hour or so)
I asked about migration assistant or something similar which was at my start up (i didnt use it) which says it can transfer info from PC to mac - they said it wouldnt work, although i am still unsure as to why.
I have used google again to see what i can find as a fix, but its a mindfield out there and my brain is beginning to get fried - i have spent days trying to find out what fixes there are.  I cant even find migration assistant anymore on the imac ( i dont know where it lives)
Please please please help me as I am just about ready to throw in the towel - it shouldnt be this hard or this much of a headache should it?
I am trying to start up my own photographic business which is why I was advised to make the switch, but I am already 2 weeks behind on editing as I am constantly waiting on the delivery, fix, help to get my imac up and running properly.
I do need simple step by step instructions as I am new to mac.
    Thanks so much for reading

Reading between the lines, basically you have a drive that's Windows-formatted, that already has a lot of files on it, which you want to read with your Mac.
The usual drive format for Windows drives is NTFS, which in theory Macs can read, but not write to. An older format is FAT, which Macs can read and write to. Since you're not able to even read the drive, I'm a little puzzled.
When you attach the drive to the Mac, what happens? Do you see a drive icon appear on the desktop? If not, make sure that the Finder is set to display drives. Go to the Finder menu, click Preferences, General, and make sure external drives are set to show on the desktop.
If you still don't see it, open Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Do you see the drive there? If so, click on its partition/volume name (not the drive model line, there should be another line beneath it which displays the drive "name" that you've given it). The information at the bottom of the screen should tell you what format the volume is.
If it's NTFS, you could TRY installing Paragon NTFS. As I say, in theory with NTFS you certainly should be able to read the drive, but it might help. Worse case, you're out $20.
Failing that, does this hard drive have any kind of protection or encryption built into it? Some drives have proprietary encryption which relies on software that you install on your system. In that case, you would only be able to read it from your Windows system. If that's the case, maybe you can turn the encryption off on the WIndows side, then try again connecting to your Mac.

  • I want to edit properties of the interface windows opened while "Open File", "Save Page As" and interface opened during Downloading of any file.

I am doing a small project on dedicated web client where in user automatically logs in non-root user and Firefox automatically starts.
I am using Fedora 14 kernel 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686 and Firefox 3.6.16.
I have installed only Gnome in my computer with no Nautilus or other file browser on it.
I want to edit properties of the interface windows opened while "Open File", "Save Page As" and interface opened during Downloading of any file.
    Please guide me for this.

First, I sent an email to the author of PhotoME to inform him of the serious issues his addon caused with Firefox latest versions.
Now, for those of you who do not have the PhotoME addon and yet experience the same problem that I had and that I described above, I suggest the following strategy.
As PhotoME did cause these problems with Firefox latest versions, I am pretty covinved other addons probably might cause these problems too. Therefore, adopt the following method.
Test one addon at a time to see if this particular addon is behind your Firefox issues like the ones I had.
So, disable one addon only at a time. Then close your Firefox and restart it from scratch and see if you still have your Firefox problems. You must restart the Firefox browser from scratch. If you still have these Firefox problems, re-enable the disabled addon, restart your Firefox (again!) and repeat the same method for every single addon that you have.
Try to be selective by choosing first addons that are more likely to cause your Firefox problems such as not very well-known or not very popular addons (like it was the case for the PhotoME addon).
If this method works or if it does not work, report it on this web page so that others can be helped with your comments.
I hope this method will help you because I was really upset that I had these Firefox problems and I first thought it was the fault of Firefox, only to discover later that this PhotoME addon was the culprit and had caused me such upset.
