Movies and Music on different drives

Is there any way I can put my Movies in iTunes, but have them stored on my external drive (seperate from my Music on the internal one)?
Thanks.

Yes, there is a way. You simply create another itunes library on your external drive and import your movies into this library.
You create a new library by holding "alt" key when opening itunes. It will ask you "choose" or "create" library. Click "create", name it and safe it on the external drive. Have fun!

  • How do I combine iTunes movies and music on external drive and play both from same library?

Trying to make an old MacBook with current iTunes a server for Apple TV. Have burned DVDs to external drive and have added my music to drive. iTunes made a library on the external drive. When I open iTunes to choose a library, I can either get all of the movies or get all of the music, but I cannot choose something that is both. I have even dragged the movies into the same file as the music, hopping that would help, but alas, I can still just have one or the other.
Any help would be so appreciated.
    Thank you.

Choose one library and drag the files from the other to the library in the open iTunes application window.

  • ITunes Library: Movies and Music in Different Places

    Hey all:
I've been wanting to move my movies in iTunes to an external harddrive simply because they take up so much space, but I like having iTunes "manage" my files so that if I change the name of a song, it will change the file name as well, etc. Is there a way to move my movies to the harddrive but leave my music where it is and still have iTunes read everything ok? I tried just moving one of the files, but since it's a "digital copy" downloaded from the iTunes store, iTunes won't read it until I put it back in the original "movies" folder within the "iTunes>Music" folder.
    Thanks.

Look at this software. I think it does what you are wanting. I have used it and it works well.

  • I have a first generation apple tv synced to a itunes library on an external USB drive. Movies and Music Won't Play

Here's my setup. First Generation Apple TV. G4 Powermac running OS X 10.5.8 iTunes 10 with the Library stored on an External 3 Terabyte USB 2 drive. It's plugged into a PCI USB 2 card. Everything worked fine till I transferred my iTunes library to the external USB drive. Things seem to sync up fine. I have it set to copy TV shows to the Apple TV's internal drive and that seems to work but when I try to play music or movies that are streaming from the library, I get an error. With movies I get the "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized." error. The movie and music list seems up to date but now it won't play. Did I waste my money on this external drive? How do I get this setup to work?

I don't think this will be a complete answer to your question, but may point you in the right direction.
I have a similar setup (same OS X and iTunes versions), but my library is on a network attached 2TB harddrive (vs a USB 2 drive). Mine works fine, both syncing (which you don't have a problem with) and streaming. It's possible that iTunes doesn't like the USB 2 drive, but I don't know. Are you able to watch TV shows on your PowerMac after having moved the files to the USB drive? If you can watch content on your laptop but not on your AppleTV, it suggests the Apple TV doesn't like the USB drive.
Perhaps you didn't transfer iTunes library content correctly. (Forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know.) The iTunes library consists of a list of content and it's location (local harddrive, network drive, etc.). If you simply moved the files, but didn't actually update the library with the new locations, this can explain why you can't stream the content. The Apple TV displays what is in the library, but cannot play it if the library entry is pointing to the wrong location. Note: This "library update" I'm referring to is not the same as simply changing the iTunes media folder location in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced.
When I moved my content to an external drive, I had to delete everything in my iTunes Library, then re-import everything (File > Add to library). Don't let the phrase "delete everything in my iTunes library" freak you out. Deleting entries in the library is not the same as deleting the files (which you definitely do NOT want to do).
If you select an item in your iTunes library and press the Delete button, it asks for confirmation thus:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected TV show from your iTunes library?
It's OK to answer "Delete TV Show". It will then ask you if you want to delete the file. Do NOT delete the file. You can select your entire library and delete everything at once, just make sure you do NOT delete the files when it asks. When that is done, make sure the iTunes Media Folder Location is set to where you want and that the files are there. Then, go to File, Add to Library and re-import everything. It will take several minutes to more than an hour, depending on the speed of your computer and the size of your library.
I have had to do this everytime I've moved my library to different storage devices. If there is a simpler way, I am not aware of it.
    I hope this helps.

  • Relocating Movie and Music directory to ext. USB drive

I would like to move my "movies" and "music" directory to a different external drive.
By default Tiger (10.4.4) has a user directory, and inside there are the folder I'd like to relocate.
Reason being is that iWork/iLife/iApps only read the users home directory for those folders. i.e. importing a photo to "Keynote" will only allow you to use the media panel. So I have to go the insert other file route. I'd like to use the "media" payne to view the files, but I'd like the files to be located on my external USB drive so I can take them with me on my limited hard drive space powerbook
Is there an app that will allow me to tweak the home directory file folder locations so that the iapps will still work? Yes, I know i can get teh files into the iwork/ilife apps but it's a few steps to do it, plus I can't really browse the files themselves.
I know in "ahem... windows xp" it can be done to move the location of the "My documents" directory, but can it be done in Tiger 10.4.4?

    For music, you can store your files on a different HD and just change the Music Folder location setting in iTunes to the new location. {iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>General tab}
The library database files can then remain on your main HD while the media files are someplace else.
Just copy the whole iTunes Music folder to the external drive then change the location setting.
For movies making an alias may be the easiest way to go about it... Move your Movies folder to the new drive and then create an alias to it an place the alias in your home folder and rename it to Movies.

  • HT1660 Can I play movies and music from my external hard drive or do I have to re-instll them on my computer?

Can I play my movies and music from my external hard drive or do I have to reinstall it on my computer?

    Hello B3NN13,
If you would like to add the music from your external hard drive to iTunes without copying it to the iTunes Library on your internal hard drive, you may find the following article helpful:
Add files to your library without adding them to your iTunes folder
When you add an item already on your computer to your iTunes library, iTunes places a copy of the file in your iTunes folder. The original file remains in its current location.
You can change this setting so that files are added to your iTunes library without being added to the iTunes folder. You might want to do this, for example, if you prefer to store video files on an external disk but still want to view them in iTunes.
Choose iTunes > Preferences, and click Advanced.
Deselect the checkbox next to “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.”
From now on, when you drag a file to your library or choose File > Add to Library, the item appears in iTunes, but the actual file isn’t copied or moved.
Tip: You can temporarily reverse this setting by holding down the Option key while you drag files to the iTunes window.
iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored
    Sincerely,
    - Brenden

You can't fix it.  iTunes bought content is DRM protected. so it can only be played on authorized devices.  i.e devices associated with the apple Id used to purchase the content.  Its copyright protection that the rights owners demand.
Circumventing it, is illegal in most countries, and as such cannot be discussed here.  If you want to play the content you'll need to connect your computer directly to your TV, or use some other device you can authorize for iTunes content such as an iPad, iPhone , iPod touch or Apple Tv.

  • How do you move movies and music to ipad mini ios 7 from linux computer?

I hope that someone can please help. I have two children, ages six and 10. They previously used nabis but I've bought them both ipad minis. They would like to put their movies and music on them. They would like to be able to watch movies when we take a long car ride, etc. They have wifi versions and no 4g so they would be away from an internet connection. They have movies ripped from dvds they own, and music from ripped disney cds. They do not have a working portable dvd player anymore as it has been a long time since they needed one. They have a "boom box" style cd player but not handy for a car. The thing is, they both want to do different things in the back seat.
I only have linux (kubuntu 13.10) on our laptops and desktops.
I know that there are only a few file formats that the ipad can read for music and movies, but converting those isn't a problem.
I tried buying a "dongle" for a micro sd card, but that didn't work. At least I couldn't figure out how to make it work. The ipad would never recognize it.
Everything on the web said to just use the music software on the linux pc, such as Banshee, etc. But when I plug in the ipad mini to the computer I get a loop of "trust this computer?" that just keeps happening. I see that is a common thing now.
I tried installing itunes in a virtual drive on my laptop, but I could never get it to work. I progressed back through several versions of itunes and tried using PlayOn linux but it never worked.
I have never used itunes so I don't really know how it works. Is there anyway to upload to it through a web browser or something like that?
I tried an ap for the ipad called "file master." WIth that, I could send mp3 and movie files to the ipad through a web browswer based connection on wifi. The ipad could open the music and movie inside that ap, but could not see it through the music or video player aps, those said that itunes was empty. The problem with this is that it crashes. It will play a few seconds of a song and crash to the home screen. Some songs it plays OK, others it crashes as soon as you click. This isn't going to work well for kids in the back seat.
In the "file master" ap I can see folders for things like "music" and "downloads," and I can move files around in those directories, but the built in music and video aps never see the files.
I tried drop box. That works OK. Again, music will play inside the drop box ap, but the ipad doesn't "see" the music in the music ap. The problem here is that I only have about 3 gigs worth of drop box space, and I bought my son as 64 gig ipad mini. I'd like to be able for him to use that space. So this is limited by the space of the drop box account. So not a great solution. But at least a partial solution.
I can't find an ipad ap for ubuntu one.
I tried icloud, but there doesn't seem to be anyway to upload files to it from the pc.
There is something called "icloud match" that is $25. I get the impression that this looks at the songs you have ripped from your own cds and matches those to the itunes store and lets you download from there. Would this work? I'm kind of grumpy about the idea of paying $25 to see if it will let me move my own files to my own tablet.
I've tried several other aps from the ap store that were music players, but they all seem to be looking for itunes. I could not get any to find an mp3 file that I moved to the ipad through the "file master" ap.
So, I can't get itunes to work, and I can't get the ipad to connect to a computer.
Surely there has to be some way to do something as simple as move a file to a tablet. I'm afraid there must be some simple answer that I'm just overlooking so I've come to beg for help.
    Thank you.

Just in case anyone in a similar situation finds this by google or something in the future.
    I found a work around.
I think that my troubles with the file master ap were probably from mp3's that got corrupted in the transfer.
I went back and tried it again and it has been working flawlessly to transfer music and movies.
It is a free ap from the ap store.
When you open it, it gives a url for the ipad that you open in a web browser and just upload the files you want moved.
You just watch the video or listen to the music from the file master ap itself. It doesn't integrate it into the stock aps.
The up-side is that you don't have to worry about the limitations on video files, it plays multiple video formats.
The downside is that it is transferring the files through wifi so it is as slow as Christmas.
But it isn't a problem really just to send a batch of files over. Just be patient.
So a usb connection would be much faster and preferable, but this works.

  • Movies and Music on Two Computers

Recently, I got a new computer, but I still want to keep all the movies and music from my old iTunes on my ipod. Unfortunately, itunes prevents me from putting two movies on my ipod from two different computers. I find this extremely unfair seeing as how I purchased all the movies myself. Is there any way I can fix this?
I was also wondering if there was a way to make all my music from my old computer that i've bought show up on my new computer

No. That explains how to set up to manually sync so that you can put content on ipod from two different computers:
    From the article:
"When in manual mode, to add songs or playlists drag them from iTunes to the iPod icon in the sidebar."
    and
"If you want to keep the music library on iPod, but copy songs or playlists from the music library on the second computer, click Cancel to this dialog box, and then set iPod to manual mode."
    Your other question:
""I was also wondering if there was a way to make all my music from my old computer that i've bought show up on my new computer "
Not unless you have moved it there. Itunes does not keep up with your purchased music for you. Once you purchase it, it is you responsibility to keep up with it - just like a cd you purchase from the store. You can copy the music from one hard drive to the other.

  • ITunes movie and music sharing advice needed

OK, I need some adavice from some of you itunes experts out there.
First, let me explain my setup by going room to room.
Home Office: Airport Extreme, sitting next to an Intel Dial Core Mac Mini. Mac Mini has an external 1TB hard drive with my music and tons of movies.
Living room: Plasma flat screen. Will eventually have an appleTV or mac mini connected to it. Currently I use one of my two Macbooks to connect to the TV if I want to play a movie.
Bedroom: LCD flat screen TV. Like the living room, will eventually have an apple tv or a mac mini, but right now I use one of my laptops.
All computers are running OSX 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.
Here's what I want to do:
    - I want to quickly browse my movies and music (movies more important) from any one of the TVs
    - I would prefer to use a remote, like the Apple Remote or a programmable one from Logitech, to browse through the movies. With two kids under 5, the last thing I want in the living room is a wireless keyboard and mouse that they will easily destroy.
    - I would like to browse the movies according to categories (comedy, drama, TV shows) instead of a big long alphabetical list (alphabetical lists are a pain when you have complete TV series collections like 24 or Curb Your Enthusiasm, shows that might have 100 episodes. Scrolling through them is a big PITA).
    - I want to maintain a centralized library of my media, and not have copies of movies and music sitting on different computers. That's why I have it all on the Mac Mini in my office. This makes it easier for me to do a backup or to add movies I have ripped from my DVD collection somewhere else (copying 30 gb across wireless takes too long)
So far, Front Row has been a bit of a disappointment. Browsing a shared collection is klugy, and requires me to put an alias in the movie folder on each machine. BAlso I have not noticed any way to browse movies by their categories/genres.
So, what should I do? Will a product like Media Central, or Plex, do the trick? Or am I missing something about the new Home Sharing feature> When I tried Home Sharing, it COPIED the movie from one machine to another, it didn;t just create a link to it. Should I move the music/movie drive to the Airport Extreme, instead of having it connected to the Mac Mini?
Any advice folks? I would really really appreciate it.

right click the movie file, get info and 'options'. Apple have moved the drop down menu!

  • My movies and music videos won't show up on screen, I can hear the sound but not see the video how do I fix this?

My movies and music videos won't show up on my computer screen, I can hear the sound but not see the video how do I fix this? I'm not sure what to do as far as turning my purchased movie into DVD goes either. I just want to put the movie onto a DVD disc but my itunes won't even show that I have a blank disc in the drive, I'm not sure what is wrong or how to fix this, any help at all would be much appreciated.

    Hi @anthony7722 ,
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to help!
I grasp that you uninstalled the Intel graphic driver and the catalyst control.  You reinstalled the Intel driver and now you can view and hear videos on the Internet but you are unable to set the resolution as high as previously.
When I checked the specifications for your notebook I see that you have switchable graphics.
Here are two links that I believe will help.
Overview of Switchable Graphics or Dual GPUs
Switchable Graphics on Notebooks Configured with Intel and ATI GPUs
Here is a link to HP Pavilion dv7-6150eb Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers
    Please try this process.
    1. Download the chipset driver, and both graphic drivers and save them  but do not install them yet
2, Delete the chipset driver and install the updated one.
    3. restart your notebook
4.Delete the Intel driver and install the updated one
    5. restart your notebook
    6. Delete the AMD driver and install the updated driver.
You should now have a Catalyst Control Center.
This should now allow you to use the higher graphic card which should support the higher resolution.
    I hope this helped.

Could you please tell me why as a Brit resident in Japan therefore having a billing address that is Japanese is forced to only get service from the Japanese online store? Is there not some way of allowing me to select movies and music to buy and download from other stores. Why do am i forced to try to nread Japanese when I have selected English as my language. The price for Downloads is no different and even if it was I am happy to pay. This also applies to Movie rental which is crazy and extremely restrictive. I a supposed GLOBAL community why does Apple do this.

You can buy ONLY from the itunes store of your country of residence (As proven by valid billing address of credit card) and ONLY while inside the borders of that country.
These are the terms of the itunes store.

If you still have the crashed Win computer, you may be able to recover your music and movies from the hard drive. If you have a friend with a hard drive USB connection kit and a PC, they should be able to help.  Otherwise, check locally for computer services that might do that for you (I think Best Buy Geek Squad may be able to help). If the drive itself is in good shape, it shouldn't be too expensive.
