Moving accounts from Snow Leopard Macs to Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server

I got my brand spanking new Mac mini today with Snow Leopard Server! So far, we (at home) were managing our accounts on individual iMacs and a MacBook Pro. While I will be getting into the innards of account migration, management etc. I thought I'd post a quick question here; Currently I have an iMac with three user accounts on it (wife and two kids). I also have my own personal MacBook Pro with my account (the only Admin account) on it. We'll soon be getting another iMac for our daughter (who currently has an account on the existing iMac). My idea in getting the Mac mini was to move to and centrally manage all the user accounts in the household on the Mac mini server. What is the best way to accomplish this? What is the best way to move the existing accounts on to the server?
Additionally, I'll be looking into connecting the two stationary iMacs with Powerline Ethernet (where one runs Ethernet over existing electrical wires in the walls). My other option would be to rely on wireless network (I don't think this would be a good idea for if I am going to be placing the user accounts on the server and there needs to be a constant on, reliable connection between the server and the client computers as they will be talking to each other a lot!). Any thoughts on Powerline? (I am not looking forward to installing Ethernet cabling behind walls :o))
What say the wise men of Mactopia?!
Thanks,
Kenneth.
P.S. I had earlier accidentally posted this in the corresponding section of Mac OS X instead of the Mac OS X Server forum.

Ok so the esiest way to explain this is to tell you what i just went through.
I have 3 user accounts. All the accounts are network Users meaning that there home folder are kept on the server. I was having a problem with Time Machine giving me error 41 and error 11. After scratching my head for 2 days I ended up copying (Drag-n-Drop) the Home Folders to an External Hard Drive. I then proceeded to erase both of the internal hard drives on the mac mini and did a fresh local install of the Server OS.
Everything was fine at that point. Now this is where Snow Leopard stopped being nice.
I went and Created the user account again using WGM. I let WGW create the home folder and the 9 folder inside. I made sure the short names were the same and the passwords were the same as they were previously.
However, once i Copied files from the external drive to the home folders the permissions copied as well, Which i guess should be expected. So now at this point apparently the UID's of the newly created users wasn't the same as they were before the clean install. I have multiple instances of root listed in the ACL for several folders and also had several instances of System listed sporadically.
Now, This isn't to say that you can't drag n drop because now That I have it all squared away and everything is now working ok, I would probably still drag n drop the home folder off to an external disk, but only because I now know what to do to clean things up.
if you drag and drop be sure to use the CHOWN command and theCHMOD commands afterwards. Take a look at this MacFixIt article: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20013630-263.html?tag=mncol;title
If you copy your local imac users to the home directory on the server you may want to follow the steps on the URL I gave plus you will most likely also have to do the following. In a nutshell you are going to use the chmod command to strip all the ACL Permissions then you are going to use the chown command to re-specify the correct owner and the correct permissions for the network user.
!) Go into ServerAdmin and click on Sharing
2) Go to the users folder you are using and select the user you are going to work with.
3) Click on the Permissions option
4) click on the +sign at the bottom (this will open the users & groups list to the right)
5) Drag the current user from the users list to the owner permissions line under posix section
5a) Click Save
6) Click on the Gear button at the bottom
7) Check the box for Owner Name and Owner Permissions.
8) Uncheck the box for Access Control List then click ok
Once you've gone through that rigmarole you can go back into ServerAdmin and fix the permissions for public and Sites folder which should only take a minute or so.
So the moral of this story and as I found out when i ended up calling Enterprise support is that the act of dragging and dropping user home directories from one server to another, or as in your case, from a local machine to a the server isn't anything that apple recommends or supports. you might want to read through the man pages for "Ditto" or so apple tells me, but honestly now that you know, the steps above aren't all that bad. It's true Knowing IS half the battle!
have Fun!
P.S. FWIW If you run into problems and have to call Enterprise Support be prepared for them to tell you to refer to the user Guides. So reading those would be to your advantage even though they aren't the easiest things to understand unlike apple's consumer products user guides

  • Wiki Server support on Mac Mini with Snow Leopard?

    Hi
I am considering buying Mac Mini with Snow Leopard server. Before that, I want to know about wiki server 2 capabilities. Wiki Server 2 page says following:
"Mac OS X Server makes it easy for groups to collaborate and communicate through their own wiki-powered intranet website complete with group calendar, blog, and mailing list"
I am planning to setup wiki server for a small group of users over Internet (and not intranet) to exchange information and so it should look something like wiki.mydomain.com with login capabilities for user(and again, this is over internet).
My Question: Can wiki server 2 work with web server to support above (or similar) setup?
If not, what can be done to support above setup?
    Response appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance.

Jason, what is your source of information that this is a supported configuration?
I work at Apple. Thats why I have the !http://discussions.apple.com/images/status/apple_employee-16x16.gif! logo below my username.
The new Mac mini comes in three different configurations, two of those have the standard version of Snow Leopard.
There is an article that addresses issues similar to this here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186, but switching from Snow Leopard Server to Snow Leopard is not like trying to install Tiger when the Mac mini came with Snow Leopard.
You can also verify this by contacting an Apple specialist at: 1-800-MY-APPLE or call U.S. iPod and Mac technical support at: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273).

  • How do I transfer my iTunes account from a PC to a Mac?

How do I transfer my iTunes account from a PC to a Mac?

There's a couple of things you can do. First, on your Mac, log in to iTunes with your Apple ID. This will allow you to download the songs you've already purchased on iTunes. Transferring the files manually can be tideous, so I would reccommend calling Apple Support and they will guide your through it, or you can schedule an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, and they will help take care of it for you.
    Hope this helps,

CDs I burn from my itunes 10 on my macbook with snow lepard will not play in the regular cd player.  How do I burn Cds that will pay in a reg old cd player?

When the computer was new, I had the same issue I have now.  It was new and I could not burn to play on a reg cd player. Today, I can not burn to play on a reg cd player. Inbetween, I could not burn to play on a reg cd player.  I keep giving up and then trying months later.
I have recently made the cds that play on the computer.  I have also tried in the last month to make a dvd copy, it played.  I have gone to people's homes and tried the cd's burned in my computer. They are not recognized.  This last round I have only used the cd-r but have tried many others in the past. I am running out of money to keep buying different brands, kinds, etc.  I figured it must be my lac of knowledge and am trying to get some new here.

Take it back where you got and and get your money back.
As has been pointed out, if there was a "previous owner", the phone is not "new". Thephone you purchased is most likely stolen. If whoever you bought it from won't give you your money back, turn it over to the police.

  • Moving Contacts from Windows XP Outlook to Mac Leopard Entourage

Is this possible? Can you provide directions? I have Bootcamp if it helps. Thanks.

    Latan:
There is a way of importing contacts from Windows XP Outlook to Mac Leopard Entourage and that is by saving a file in a Text - comma separated values and then importing into Entourage.
    Here is how:
    1. Open Outlook in Windows
    2. Click on File and then *Import and Export*
    3. Choose *Export to a file* and hit Next
    4. Choose *Comma Separated Values (Windows)* and hit Next
    5. Then highlight Contacts and hit Next
    6. Choose a filename and a place to save the exported file and hit Next
    7. Confirm with a check mark next to *Export "Contacts" from folder: Contacts* and hit Finish
The above will have generated a file with the exported contacts from Outlook. Remember its name and location on the HD.
    1. Open Entourage in Leopard
    2. Go to File and choose Import
    3. Place a check mark on *Contacts or Messages from a text file* and click the *Right Arrow* at the bottom right of the window.
    4. Place a check mark on *Import contacts from a tab- or comma-delimited text file* and click on the *Right Arrow* at the bottom right of the window.
    5. Locate the file that you created above and highlight it in the next window. Once done then hit Import
That should bring in all the contacts into Entourage.
The above instructions are for importing outlook contacts into Entourage (Office 2008 for Mac). If you have any other version then it should still work however the menu choices may be slightly different.

  • Are macs going to come with snow leopard when it comes out?

or is it going to be a separate upgrade to today's leopard? because i wanted to buy a macbook now but i dont know if it would be better to me and save the 9.99 fee for the upgrade if i just wait until september.

i wanted to buy a macbook now
If you want it now, buy it now.
You are going to spend over $1000.00 for a new MacBook, and the $10 Up-to-Date (less than 1 tenth of 1 percent of that price) is too much for you to have a MacBook today and use it for 2+ months?
What is the value of your enjoyment?
However, the following Apple web page says
    <http://www.apple.com/macosx/>
    Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
Coming September 2009 with every new Mac.
So does that work for you?
NOTE: Current inventory will still have 10.5 installed, so it will depend on where you buy. Items coming from the on-line Apple Store will most likely start shipping with 10.6.
Brick and Morter Apple Stores (BestBuy, and other mail-order outlets, etc...) may be still be selling existing inventory for the first few days. If buying from one of these, verify which version of Mac OS X is on the system, and inquire if they will provide the upgrade for free.

  • Anyone have experience moving files from an iPad to a Mac?

    Dear Folks,
I need a way to transfer files from my iPad to my Mac, to deal with the content (music and videos right now, but probably other types of files in the future) that iTunes doesn't back up. I've come across two programs that supposedly will let me mount an iPad on the Mac desktop and/or allow me to transfer files from it to my Mac. Deggie and dwb also know of several and have kindly mentioned them. So, I'm considering:
    IMToo Podworks for Mac (http://www.imtoopodworks.com/pod-works-mac.html)
    Air Sharing HD (http://avatron.com/apps/air-sharing-hd/)
    Senuti (http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/)
    Yamipod (http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/)
    iRip (http://thelittleappfactory.com/irip/)
Does anyone reading this have an opinion on (or experience with) how well any of these work?
Free vs fee isn't an issue for me, how well it functions is.
    Thanks!

I can tell you with certainty that for documents of any kind "GoodReader" is an excellent app. It will let you connect to your mac via wi-fi. It mounts it as an external drive and you can create folders and drag files to the folders.
I haven't tried dragging any movies or music but there wouldn't be anything to stop you from doing so. There is also a file management component to the app that lets you choose an "Open with ... " type of dialog and open a file with pages if it is a .doc file, or GoodReader can open pdf, doc, xls and many other doc types.
Very happy with this .99 cent app. I agree with the other question though. If I rip a dvd, I use handbrake to convert to mp4 and add to my iTunes - then sync as per normal.

  • Moving Account from Old MacBook to Newly-Acquired MacBook Pro

Received a new MacBook Pro and want to migrate from my old MacBook. However:
    1) the Snow Leopard disk I have seems to hang when I click on the Utilities button (lower left corner of Installation screen). On clicking on the button, it asks for a Restart. I click on the Restart button and it hangs on the restart. Do I need to press "C" while restarting?
2)if I use Migration Assistant, because I have the same account name on both computers, it wants to rename one of them. Questions:

    It worked - mostly.......
I lost my Aperture registration and had to re-enter both my Aperture serial number and my Aperture 3 upgrade serial number. Aperture is also having trouble finding my images that I put into various projects and albums. Some come in, and others don't.
I backed up my old MacBook using Time Machine and restored from that backup, just as you suggested. Why won't Aperture find the images for ALL y albums, only some, and what can I do to force it to look for all the images?
Last, re: Snow Leopard install disc. I have my Snow Leopard package and install disc in hand. The package (which I bought at the Apple store on University Ave. in Palo Alto) says "OS X Snow Leopard The world's most advance operating system. Finely tuned." and has a picture of a snow leopard on the front of the box. The box has the part number MC223Z/A. The disc also has a picture of the same snow leopard, and says Mac OS X Snow Leopard in large type across the top just below the Apple logo, Install DVD Version 10.6 22691-6558-A in small print on the left side.
And it does have a Utilities button in the lower left corner of the opening screen, not an Options button. No menu bar across the top. So if that's not a Snow Leopard install disc, the Apple store sold me a fake and I want a new, REAL install disc.

  • Network Accounts used on Lion computers no longer work with Snow Leopard computers.

I am having issues with my network users who have once used a computer with Lion on it joined to the network then going to use a Snow Leopard workstation and Google Chrome and Safari crash randomly either at the first 30 seconds or typing a space or backspace character.

I am also facing this situation with a 2007 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini that is running OS 10.7.4 Lion, which is not upgradable to Mountain Lion because it requires 64 bit processsing, while the Mini is limited to 32 bit. Why is Pages suddenly crippled? I've never seen anything like this. Somehow, Pages was upgraded to 4.2 and now it no longer runs even though I have upgraded to your last latest OS before Mountain Lion. What gives, Apple? I've spent thousands on your products over the years, from an Apple IIgs, IIci, Mac 6100, 7100, iMac, and on through my two iPad and five iPhones. We customers deserve an explanation, not the silent treatment. Fix this.
