Moving an Oracle Database from Solaris to AIX

Hi all,
I have been asked to move an SAP system using an Oracle database from
Solaris to AIX (on an IBM P590).
Most of the move is straightforward, except the Oracle database
transfer. It would make my life so much easier if I could simply
restore the Oracle datafiles from an off-line backup of the Solaris
system and then link it to a clean install of the Oracle binaries on
the AIX system, rather than have to do an export and import.
Is this possible, after all the AIX Oracle binaries would be the same
patch level as the Solaris binaries and the file systems would be the
same. Also as it would be an offline backup we would not have to do
any recovery, so the archive logs and the original redo logs would not
be required.
Does anyone know if this is possible or has actually executed it
successfully, any hints and tips on the gotchas would be greatly
appreciated.
TIA
Chris aka BoobBoo

Hello Chris,
unfortunately you didn't write anything about your oracle version or your backup mechanism like RMAN,etc..
I think you will use Solaris on a SPARC architecture and not on x86? (same endian)
If you have RMAN and 10gR2 then you can use the "Database Transport Across Same Endian Platforms":
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/wnbradv.htm
> RMAN now supports the CONVERT DATABASE command, which can prepare a whole database for transport to a new platform that uses the same endian format. Database transport across platforms provides a faster and easier way to move databases from one platform to another than previous solutions requiring the use of Data Pump.
Metalinknote #413586.1 has a FAQ and a step on step guide.
If you have created your tablespaces under Oracle 10g (no oracle upgrade from previous releases!!) you can use the "Transportable tablespace feature" and copy the database files. SAP has published note #1035051 for that.

  • Migration Oracle db from solaris to aix

    Hi,
I would like to ask you for a best way how to do..
We have a large international Oracle migration effort from Solaris to AIX. We have some challenges where a standard export/import will not work due to the extended distance between sites. As an example we are migrating from Japan to Texas.
What is the best tool to use?
I looked around and I found Oracle Golden Gate.
do you have any other idea?
    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Tom

I dont have more info about the project but there will databases (maybe 500) with different sizes (x MB - x TB) and there could be single and RAC.
I am looking for any tool/utility where I will be able to prepare migration document which could be used as baseline for migration all of them.I do not think it will be possible to use one approach for all DBs in your case. You should split DBs into groups you may use different approaches.
    Among 500 DBs will be:
    a) databases with "low availability" requirements where long downtime is possible. so you can stop app, take an export, import into remote db, re-target app to new db.
    b) databases where only short downtime is possible. then you can use DataGuard or some replication technologies (OGG, Shareplex, DataCurrents) to make "final sync".
    c) databases with "high availability" requirements where NO downtime is possible. Here you can use some replication technologies (i.e. DataCurrents and may be others can do it). First you copy data to remote DB and "remember" SCN you got the source dump, then you keep replicating all changes starting from this SCN. As soon as remote DB becomes in sync, you quickly switch the app to new DB.
But I never did migration accross states (more than 1000 miles).Distance does not matter. You should have good bandwidth network connection between sites.

  • How to connect oracle database from solaris platform

I have installed oracle9i client on solaris8, how can I configure to connect other oracle database?
    thanks for your assistance!!

If the database is remote you would need to setup a sqlnet.ora and a tnsnames.ora file. Their locations are platform dependent. On AIX the files are in /etc while on some platforms you find the files in /var/opt/oracle and on others $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin. We have a Sun Sparc running SunOS 5.6 that has them in /var/opt/oracle.
Configuation can be done through the installer as part of the install process, probably using a gui tool, or manually. We vote for manually.
See your install README files and the ORANET manuals for details. Or once you know where the files belong copy them from a platform that can access the db you want to reach and just remove unnecessary lines for other databases.

  • Oracle migration from solaris to AIX

    Hi,
We have a activity of a migration of oracle 9i Solaris database (800G in size) to AIX oracle 10g database, we use RMAN and exp/imp as a backup method. What are the efficient and fastest methods to do this and i what way?
    Thanks
    Jaffy

    Hi
As your database is large so try transportable tablespace features for different platform migration. If endian format is same you don't need to use RMAN for datafile conversion. If endian format is different you need to convert datafile.
You will get information about supported platform from V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM .

  • Complexities of Migrating Oracle 10g from Solaris to HP-UX Itanium

Can anyone share their experiences with regards to migrating Oracle 10g from Solaris on a Sun platform to HP-UX 11i v3 (Itanium) on HP Integrity servers. We are trying to consider all the risks associated with such a move. How much time delay did you experience in resolving unexpected issues along the way? How complex is the process? If you had to do it all over again, would you?
In addtion, we will also be migrating Oracle eBusiness Suite 11i (11.5.10.2).
    We appreciate your helpful feedback.
    Thank you.

    Here is more information:
    - the database size is currently about 500GB
    - our ASP allows us to be down as much as we want however the company's own needs can only allow a downtime window of two days (over the weekend)
    - i presume further that RMAN might be an option to use to backup the database and instance to some transportable media
    - it would take about four days to get that media from the ASP to our facility so durign that time the instance at the ASP would have to be used
    - after we get the backup media and load everything into our in-house site, our last step would be to find a way to migrate all changes over the WAN. I am told that unless the platforms are the same on both ends, mirroring will be extremely difficult or impossible. If we have a platform that is different from the ASP platform, then the migration of all changes will require conversion and other mechanisms. I am told that HP-UX has so much complexities that this will be a daunting task to accomplish.
Do you have any opinions and recommnedations?

  • Migrating from Solaris to AIX

    Hi
We are planning to migrate from Solaris to AIX. What document will help me to follow?
If possible send me exact link.
Our current environment is R/3 4.6c, Oracle 9.2.3 and Solaris 5.9
Please let me know as quickly as possible.
    Thank-you

    > We are planning to migrate from Solaris to AIX. What document will help me to follow?
    Start with
    http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration
    --> FAQ
where you will see, that you need a certified migration consultant on-site to do that migration.
    > Our current environment is R/3 4.6c, Oracle 9.2.3 and Solaris 5.9
since that version is out of support for a long time there are no more official migration guides available, that must be covered by consulting. Technically it will be done by R3SETUP with DBMIG.R3S as parameter file.

  • Create a new oracle database from OCI or OCCI client

    Hi,
How can we create a new oracle database from OCI or OCCI client?
i am using the oracle 11gR2
    Thanks in Advance,
    Sreekanth Polaka

Though I have not tried creating a database, try if its doable.
You can use OCI to perform SYSDBA operations.
So connect as OCI_SYSDBA and try executing the entire create database command.

  • How to connect to  Oracle database from webdynprojava application

    Hi
How to connect to  Oracle database from webdynprojava application. where can we provide the code to connect to database.?
    Thank You.

    Hi,
You need to create  Java Bean model. The bean is a typical java bean with default constructor, getter and setter. You can have additional methods for query etc. The attributes in the class will be your model node and attributes.
However you need to configure the connection and create JNDI using visual administrator before writing the code.
You can also consider writing Session EJB with oracle and using them in WD.

  • How to connect oracle database from tuxedo

    Hi,
How to connect oracle database from tuxedo.
If any one can help me.
    Regards,

it depends on configuration your going to choose, there are two ways--
    - Using X/Open standards, for this
you have to make an entry of Resource manager in $TUXDIR/udataobj/RM file.
Then in UBBConfig file in GROUPS section u have to set Openinfo.
It also depend on which database you are going to use.
In your service now you need to call tpopen() API from tpsvrinit() function.
    - Other possibility is, take an implicit connection using Pro*C or Pro*Cobol whatever platform you are using.

now, on my second one, i want to access the data from the database that i created from the first laptop. i want to access the data from the database from the first laptop using sql developer which i also installed on the 2nd laptop.
i already tried the link from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/files/install.102/b25144/toc.htm but didnt work (or maybe i missed something important).
What from the link did you try to follow? Did you try to follow the information in the link i posted, specifically ...
"4.4 Making Oracle Database XE Server Available to Remote Clients"
Once you have done that. You will need to know the IP or possible computer name of the computer on the network which is hosting the database (it would be easiest if the laptop with the database had a static IP assigned by your router, assuming this is a home setup, and you use that for your connection). You will need that information to create a new connection in SQLDeveloper on the laptop without the database installed.
Aside from that you may have to deal with windoze firewall issues and the like, but that removes this from being an Oracle question, you should be able to use google to deal with any issues you encounter in that.

  • How to connect to oracle database from visual basic 2010 express edition

I have installed visual basic 2010 express edition on windows xp. But visual basic 2010 express edition supports Microsoft sql server database file,Microsoft sql server compact 3.5, Microsoft access database file. I want to connect to oracle database from visual basic 2010 express edition. So what drivers are required and how to do connectivity?

    Hello,
I wasn't clear on what you were using to make the connection. I had a look in Visual Studio 2010 (don't have express to test sorry).
I think you mean the Data Sources available under the menu Data-> Datasources. this seems to match the description you give when I
look at the list of datasource options.
In here you can make ODBC connections via the Microsoft .net Data Provider .
If you select ODBC as a datasource you can see listed the DSN's you created - for example I see 2 which use the Oracle ODBC driver.
This assumes you installed an Oracle Client + the oracle version of the ODBC driver (comes with the oracle client).
Once you created a server connection then you should see it in the server explorer.
You can also download the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio which is an add on for VS.
** I suspect this is only for VS 2010 and I didn't see that Express was supported.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/visual-studio/overview/index-097110.html
Let me know if that helps.
