Moving house shouldn't be this hard!!!

I moved into a flat on 20th August. I was living with family before so I wasn't a customer of BT or anyone else. The previous owners of my flat were with Sky for phone and broadband. I contacted BT on 13th August to place an order for evening and weekend calls and broadband. Simple, wouldn't you think? Yep, they said, easy peasy, you'll get both on 31st August.
I got a phone call from BT on 30th August saying that my order had failed because Sky "have a hold on the line". A lot of 2-ing and fro-ing later (and a small fortune spent on my mobile) and I got through to someone at BT who had a clue and apologised and promised that I would get my phone and broadband on 17th September. It would "definitely" work this time and I was offered some discounts by way of compensation.
On 17th September I got a phone call from BT saying my order had failed because Sky "have a hold on the line". I would now have to wait until Tuesday 21st for my phone line to be activated and Friday 24th for my broadband. It would "definitely" work this time. (Notice the pattern?) It is now Thursday 23rd and my phone has not been activated. No one has called from BT. When I track my order online it says it has been cancelled.
The thought of phoning them up again, being put on hold, explaining the siutation a million times, spending a fortune on my mobile, getting told a load of **bleep** then being given false promises again makes me want to cry. But to do anything (ie. get phone calls and broadband from another supplier) I'm going to need a phone line in my name.
Is there a way of getting BT to do what they say?

I like the HTC ONE but don't like lwhat they did to the bottom 3 buttons. Should be Menu, Home, Back. Not Back, HTC logo, Home.
I'll wait for the next one too.....

  • Shouldn't be this hard -  I just want to know what number a text is coming from.

I have texts from a friend. I want to tell someone else what thier cell phone number is. I go to the under contact.
There are three numbers, all in a row — how do I tell which one the texts are coming from (and going to)?
Might be the blue one, but I can't find any documentation anywhere.
Just a little frustrated with it at the momment.

The easiest option would to purchase a backup hard drive and store your data there. Hard drives are getting cheaper all the time, and all you have to do is drag and drop. Lots of good choices here, but I've had good luck with the super-reliable G Drive and the Seagate Freeagent Go.
When it comes to transferring the DVD, there are some legal ambiguities to address. Strictly speaking, by strict application of copyright law, it's even illegal to copy content you own. In short, if you purchased a DVD, it can't be copied. However, "fair use" is often used to justify copying content - movies or software - that you've paid for already. That means you'll have to "rip" the DVD. Since powers at Apple are likely to object to fair use arguments, you'd best to investigate the details on your own.
Post here if you have any more questions, or comments, or anything!

  • Shouldn't be this hard

Well, I did manage to get my Droid DNA back, which is all I wanted in the first place, AND, after almost 2 hours on the phone, this one hasn't dropped a call (fingers and toes crossed, knocking on all the wood I can find), so it is possible to get some help from Verizon.
My problem is with the company policies that made it impossible for the Customer Care reps to provide service. I got frustrated with them, and I'm sure they with me, but some corporate suit(s) are to blame, and they really need to rethink some of their decisions.
But I am happy and it was well worth the effort - even though it should NEVER EVER have been as difficult as it was.
The DNA is a fantastic phone, and my next phone will probably be another HTC as well. For folks that don't know, HTC phones are also the only phones that will receive MMS with data turned off :-) (for data misers like myself)
    Woohoo!

  • Kept getting pop up messages to update Mozilla browser which I did today. When I click on the icon , it won't open. shouldn't be this hard!!

Updated to latest version today and it won't
open now. Have rebooted numerous times, even did a restore to 5 days ago and nothing works. Did an undo on the restore, still nothing. Have used firefox for years with no problems.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Exporting Widescreen - It shouldn't be this difficult!

    Hello all,
I really hope someone can help me here, I'm a long-term user of Premiere Pro yet I recently upgraded to CS4 with the new media encoder, and simple operations now seem impossible, in this scenerio - exporting a widescreen video...in widescreen!
I have a video, about 1 minute long. Shot in widescreen. Edited in a Premiere widescreen project and for the export settings: Mov and/or Mpeg and/or WMV, and the DV PAL Widescreen Preset - which then gives me the (unchangeable) frame size of 720x 576. I choose Square Pixels for the ratio selection and export. I get a widescreen video plus letterboxing to give me a 4:3 screen. Seeing as i can't change the frame size, I changed the pixels to Widescreen, and it gives me a 4:3 video without letterboxing, thereby distorting it horribley. I have tried changing everything! Different codecs give me the correct size but a file hundreds and hundreds of MB big. Seriously, it shouldn't be this hard!!
    Please someone, talk some sense!
    Ryan

The other formats won't let me change the frame size from 720x576.
If you're attempting to go from a DV source (judging by the screenshot you posted, you are) to a DV output (which you are if you're going to MS DV AVI or to QuickTime DV MOV), you have no other option than to encode at 720x576, period. That's what DV is (in PALLand, anyway; in NTSCVille, it's 720x480). It doesn't matter if you're coming from or going to a standard 4:3 aspect ratio or a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, as long as you're using a DV codec your files will alwaysalwaysalways be 720x576. The differentiation between the display aspect ratio or DAR (4:3 or 16:9), therefore, comes from the pixel aspect ratio, or PAR--in other words, what shape are the pixels? For standard DV sources, the pixels' width-to-height ratio is smaller; for widescreen DV sources, the pixels' width-to-height ratio is larger. Note that these are relative, and not absolute, as I'm speaking in generalities about DV--NTSC DV and PAL DV PARs differ. As Jim pointed out, some programs are able to properly read the PAR written into a DV (or other video) file, while some simply read the raw pixel count, which in your case is 720x576. That's why it looks weird and not what you want when played back--the footage is all there, but not drawn as you'd like.
The only real safe bet, in my mind, is to use square pixels when encoding for computer playback, especially when dealing with less-than-technically-savvy clients. Computers use square pixels, and that's what they like. Encode using square pixels for web playback and local playback formats (like WMV, FLV, H.264, some QT flavors), and you'll avoid the weird stretchies. This does, of course, involve some small amount of computation on your part to determine what is the proper pixel count when using square pixels, but in the case of 16:9 widescreen display, it's usually just a case of dividing your height by 9, and multiplying that result by 16 to get the width. Punch those values into AME, and set your pixel aspect ratio to Square Pixels, and you should be in good shape... pun slightly intended.

  • HT1364 I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanen

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?

  • Hi, I just moved house and I cannot reinstall my TimeCapsule.. I tried several time.. somebody may help me ?

Hi, some difficulties to reinstall my timecapsule since I moved house more than one month ago. I tried several blogs to find a solution but no success. I reinitiate it and the light is green with no disk selection in the Airport.. how is it possible ? It's a nightm.....

    Mavericks is the nightmare.
We are finding Mavericks networking to be a big change without corresponding changes being made to help people keep the network naming correct.
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/06/11/apple-shifts-from-afp-file-sharing-to- smb2-in-os-x-109-mavericks
    SMB has tighter rules.
But whenever you change networks.. start with a factory reset. When you say reinitiate I am not sure what reset you are doing. So do the full reset. It will not delete any backup.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup using the airport utility. Make sure you are connecting your modem to the TC WAN port by ethernet.
Give the TC names that are pure alphanumeric. Short.. 10 characters or less is best.. 20 characters try to keep as max. No spaces and no special characters. The setup wizard will use names like
    Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule
It is over long.. it has spaces and it has a nasty apostrophe. Get rid of those names.
    For example use,
TCGenX (you can put a number for X.. that is the actual Gen of your TC)
TCwifi (as wifi name.. but you can also use different names like TC24ghz and TC5ghz for the different bands whilst troubleshooting).
Use only WPA2 Personal security with 10-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
Ensure the computer is getting a valid IP address. Plus gateway (what apple call router) and dns.
Ensure ipv6 is set to link-local on the wireless.
    That is the start.
Now disk access can still be a mess.
I have now setup 4 different computers for Mavericks.. my network follows all the above rules.. and two of them can access the disk without problem and two do not show the disk.
I consider this situation to be networking of the tin can and wet string kind..
The solution is to manually mount the drive.
In Finder use Go, Connect to server.
    And change over to AFP.
AFP://TCname.local (where you use your new compliant name.. in place of TCname and you use the correct domain in the place of local (but that is the default for the TC although nothing tells you that).
Alternatively you can use IP address.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (by default in router mode.. if the TC is bridged you will be better using the name unless you can set the IP statically).
Just post again if you have issues.. and we need the full layout of the network.. what modem what router what mode everything is in. how it is wired or connected.  Actual model of your TC, actual firmware it is running.

  • Moved house, now bt vision thinks i'm on ppv

I've just moved house and moved the BT with me.  Everything (phone, broadband & BT Vision) was activated two days ago but the BT Vision wants to charge me for using on demand (I have the unlimited package so it should be free) and there is no option to record anything.
I have performed 'hard' resets on all of my equipment and still no change, which leads me to believe the problem is on BT's end rather than mine.  I've spoken to the BT help desk but with no luck.
Does anyone have any other suggestions please??

Welcome to the forum. This problem seems to happen to customers occassionally. Someone at BT's not migrated your account correctly. Click here to contact the mods and with your account details they can usually get the matter sorted.

  • My wifi only ipad does not find my new address since moving house

i moved house 5 months ago but Google Maps and Google Earth show my current location as my old address.  Is there a way to resolve this problem?

    Hi, Gordonbuckley.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend going through the steps in the article below.  If the issue persists and your device OS is up to date, I would recommend contacting the developer of the app as this will most likely be the best option to resolve this issue.

  • HT1229 Tried moving my library to an external hard drive and now when I open iPhoto, there are no pictures there!!!!

I am using iPhoto '08 and moved my library to my external hard drive exactly as all the instructions online explained how to do.  I renamed the original "iPhoto Library.old" and ,y external hard drive shows a iPhoto library using the same amount of memory as what it shows on my internal hard drive.  Here is where is becomes a problem.  When I hold the option key and open iPhoto, the only box that comes up does not give me a list of libraries to choose from.  It give me the option to "Create new library" or "choose existing library". When I click "choose existing library" I can find the copied library on my external hard drive but when I open it, iPhoto shows No Photos.  When I have tried opening the original iPhoto Library (the exact same way using the option key and choosing library) that I have not done anything to, except rename it, it does the exact same thing: No Photos.  Both my internal and external hard drives show about 137 GB of space being taken up by photos but I can't access them.  My other big problem is that ,y internal hard drive is completely full, which is why I am trying to transfer them to an external, to free up space so I am very limited on what I can do because I have no free space.  Also, when I open iPhoto and try to go to the Preferences to change to path under advanced settings, it freezes and I have to force close it.
Ay advice would be greatly appreciated as I am getting stressed out that I can't open my thousands of photos!

My guess is that the library has been corrupted from being run on an overfull HD.
So, try rebuild the Library on the External
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"
I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page.  It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following:  "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"  I click locate but do not know where to go from there?  I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it.  I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer.  What to do???  Any help is much appreciated!!!

See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

  • Trying to restore my iPhone 5 from a backup but its says that it will take over 24 hours to finish. Is there something I can try to do to speed this up? I feel like it shouldn't take this long

So I have been restoring my iPhone5 from a backup for about 3 hours now however iTunes still says that it is going to take over 24 hours to complete the restore process and the progress bar hasn't moved much at all. I feel like something has gone wrong somehow and it shouldn't take this long to complete. Is there something I can do to speed up this process or do I just have to try to wait it out? I'm scared to just unplug my phone and try again since it might screw something up.

if u unplug then that could put ur device into recovery mode. i would wait

Hello, I have just moved house ( 2 weeks ago) I use to get BT infinity so I was expecting a big drop but nothing like this. When I orderd my new BT package I was told to estimate speed of 12mb.
My internet cuts out regularly - 5 to 10 times aday and most of the time when I get incoming and out going calls.
-I was getting 11.1mb the first two days I moved in.
     - Currently plugged into test socket and did the 17070 and 2 and getting some static sound but did this with a wireless phone standing next to the receiver.
-Just got brand new ADSL filters from BT.
Any help would be fantastic due to this is damaging my work with clients - Thank you!

Already talked to BT about BT business two years ago and was told I did not need to "upgrade"
I have contacted a BT enginer who is coming out next week.

  • Moved house and TM only goes back to move date

We moved out temporarily to restore our home in Nov 09- I have had TM working backing up my Mac Pro to an external drive for a year or so. The MP wasn't used for a while work was going on. I was actually working from another machine, a Book. I disconnected the Drive to access work from my Book. I've now brought the MB to the temp home and will use it there, but now I've connected the drive back to it and ran TM, if I enter, it only goes back to the date I switched off and moved the drive! Does this mean I've lost all previous evidence of back up?
    Thx

NO. First, that means you only have one copy. When your backup drive fails (and they all do, sooner or later), you risk losing it. Plus, Time Machine will, eventually, delete it's copy of anything that's no longer on your system.
should they be copied onto another drive as filed work/files?
    Yes. Or "archived" to CDs/DVDs.
The latter would mean the same files exist in 2 places, seems a bit of a waste of space?
Exactly. The essential part of a good backup strategy is to have (at least) two copies of everything important, in (at least) two places. Three is much better, especially if one is off-site (safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, etc.). That way, you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike on your power lines, etc.

  • Moving house can't keep phone number

So I'll be moving house soon and I'm trying to organise moving my phone, tv and broadband to the new place.
The trouble I'm having is that when filling in the online form it says that not only will I need a new line installed and can't keep my phone number but I won't get all the channels I get just now (standard Vision package).
The new place has had a BT line and is only up the road a bit from where I am just now.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? From what it says before I start filling in the form I should be able to move everything without charge as long as the new place doesn't need a line installed. Which the new place shouldn't need as it was a BT line before.

Have you checked the line in the new property works? If not it'll need to be connected which is normally chargeable.
