Moving iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 6 (iBook to MacBook)

What is the best way to migrate pictures from iPhoto4 on my iBook to iPhoto6 on my new Macbook? I would also like to move my original albums over at the same time.
Thanks!

While it's true you lose all of your edits,
albums and film rolls etc it does give you a
perfectly clean library. The library folder structure
is rather easy to figure out so if you've had enough
and want to start anew you can.
i did this too... kind of... it would take hours to go in to each folder to do this so i spotlite the iphoto library folder and searched "originals". it popped up with a lot of folders i presumed to be the originals to my library... but it gave me a bunch of copies like the last time so i erased the whole library and re imported it through the firewire, looked for any thing that saig iphoto on it and matched it the the system folders that it was in on the macbook book to make it think that it had simply upgraded... no dice... this is exactly what it said to me:
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library.
starts to update
there is a problem up accessing one or more files in you iphoto library
then it tells me to allow the it to read and write in the folder... and when i try that it stops me... i tried going year by year and it stops me at 2005... i have yrt to go month by month in that year but, as you can see... this problem has gotten of of hand... somebody save me

  • Moving and Merging iPhoto Libraries From 2008 Macs to 2013 MacBook Pro

I have a late 2008 MacBook and an early 2008 iMac. Both are running Lion and iPhoto '08. I will be getting a new MacBook Pro Retina very shortly to replace my MacBook. I would like to move the iMac's iPhoto library to the new MacBook Pro and merge it with the MacBook's iPhoto library once that library is also on the MacBook Pro.  I obviously need to get all iPhoto libraries up to date prior to doing this. I think I have a plan to achieve this, as follows, but I would appreciate your help:
    1) Upgrade iMac to Mavericks (App store said that I need to do this prior to upgrading to iPhoto 9.5)
    2) Upgrade iMac's iPhoto to 9.5
    3) Use set-up assistant to migrate old MacBook to new MacBook Pro. This should upgrade the old MacBook's iPhoto library to the current iPhoto version on the MacBook Pro???
    4) Move the iMac's iPhoto library to the MacBook Pro (6,604 photos, approximately 27 gb)
    5) Merge the two iPhoto libraries using iPhoto Library Manager or Aperture (I have not decided which one yet)
Is this a plan that will work?
MacBook just has Ethernet and USB.  iMac has USB, Ethernet and FireWire.  MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt and USB.
I already need to buy a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter to transfer between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.  I'd rather not have too buy another adapter just to transfer the iPhoto library from the iMac to the MacBook Pro.
Is there a way to do 4) on my wifi network using file sharing or some other method I may not be aware of just to transfer the 27 gb iPhoto library?
    Thank you.

    More simple.
Wait until you get the new machine. Copy the two libraries to the new machine. Open them, this will upgrade them to the same version. Then merge them.
Obviously, don't move them to the same folder, or rename one, so they don't overwrite each other.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I would strongly caution you that Migration Assistant is not very reliable with iPhoto Libraries.

  • I moved my entire iPhoto Library to an external hard drive, which seems to have worked. But now my Mac Pro shows a backup of the same size in the storage info and has not freed up any space. help!

I moved my entire Iphoto Library from my Macbook Pro to an external hard drive. (Prior to this, I also copied the entire library to a different ehd, plus I have 2 other ehdrives with backups). I was trying to get more space on my hd. It has a capacity of 500GB, but was down to 70GB usable, with about 300GB used up by photos. I moved the library by going to Finder, using Command+Drag+Drop onto the new Seagate ext hard drive icon. The move seems to have worked, as the library shows up on the ehd, plus will open from there. My problem is that now my Macbook Pro shows that I STILL have only 70GB available out of the 500, and that 300GB is used up by "Backups", which it did not indicate before.
I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
Thanks for any and all help!

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • IPhoto and Mail erased on MacBook Pro

I accidently erased iPhoto and mail from my MacBook Pro. Will using the Applications Insatall DVD help me get them back? Thanks for all your help!

You posted this in the iTunes for Mac forum.  Did you intend to do that?  Do you want the topic moved to the iPhoto forum?  You didn't say what it was you updated.

I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US - I doubt that it will solve your problem, though. You may want to post on the iPhoto forum - that's where all of the iPhoto experts hang out.

  • Preparing iPhotos for an iBook

Over the years I've tried to avoid photos uploaded to Apple for an iBook from being printed too darkly.  In printing circles it's often called "press gain."  In short, I'm just about ready to upload pictures for an iBook and I want to avoid getting back a book of pictures that come back darker, muddy, details lost etc.  I'm working with iPhoto 9.6.6 on an iMac about a year old, my pictures are exposed properly with all necessary final tunes (when sent to a print making service like Mpix, the colors are clear and true, details are all there, and so on.  Maybe there's a fix like adjusting saturation...or maybe there's a better book printing service out there.  Appreciate your input.

What is the color profile? The best to use for iPhoto is RGB. Adobe RGB often produces results that are too dark
As to best prep - iphoto is designed for amateurs using point and shoot or lower end DLSRs and is not a professional tool - the best results are when the minimum amount of adjusting and tweaking is done and it is best done using only iPhoto - see iPhoto: Five steps to great books, cards, and calendars - Apple Support - point 3 specifically - bottom line for iPhoto books - less is more
Better Print service - totally a personal opinion - for me (and most I suspect iphoto users) there is no better service - iphoto books printing is simple and straight forward - certainly there are other services and many people use and like them - lots are cheaper - probably some do more professional printing, but again that is a decision only you can make

PS BTW - these are not iBooks - that is a totally different electronic animal - these are iphoto photo books

You could try Events -> Autosplit Selected Event
And you always need a back up. Always.

  • IPhoto and photos wanished from MacBook Pro with OSX10.9

iPhoto and photos wanished from MacBook Pro. Apple just offer to buy iPhoto.
The laptop was baught in 2010 with OS X ~10.6. Now it has OS X 10.9. I do not know how to recover the application and files.
    Thanks for your help

If iPhoto came pre installed then go to the App Storel, sign in with the Apple ID you used to purchase the MBP or register it.  Go to the Purchases section and you should be able to download it again at no charge.
