Moving movies to timeline forces them to be rendered

I'm a bit new to FCE and I'm trying to work my way through the product.
I captured footage from a Sony 1080i video camera. (HDR-HC3) into final cut express. I dragged one of the clips to the timeline and I tried to play it and got a error saying the footage was unrendered.
I'm confused here - I haven't done anything special like add transitions or text. All I want to do is see the short clip so I can start editing - why would I need to render. I can do this same think in iMovie without a problem. Does Final Cut Express require you to render each clip that you drag into the timeline? This seems like it would be incredibly time consuming.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Make sure that your sequence settings match the clip settings. Check item properties for the clip and for the sequence.

  • Looping Quicktime Movies in Keynote & Keeping them Looped when Rendered

    Okay I have a quicktime movie that I am using as the background of my slide show. I have text fly in and out over the movie. I can get the movie to loop when I view the slideshow but when I try to export the slideshow to Quicktime the Background quicktime movie only plays once and then stops. I want the quicktime background to continue to loop when I render the entire slideshow to quicktime. And yes I have checked the loop box in the quicktime tab in the inspector window. Please Help!

    Yes, it is one slide with layered builds going in and out. The first 2 times I tried this it worked then on the same keynote file it stopped working on the second render and now it does not work even if I create a new file.
    While I do understand that I could make my slideshow, time it and loop the movies together in iMovie I do not feel that I should have to render two separate things loosing quality on each render because of the time aspect.
    Why would it work and all of a sudden stop? I should not have to go through iMovie making loops and rendering things twice when Keynote should be working.

  • Every time I move something in the FCE timeline the entire timeline needs to be re-rendered.

    Tom (or ANYONE),
    I'm working on a project with my students using Final Cut Express 4.01 using our iMac running OS 10.7.1.  we filmed using the Kodak zi8 in 1080p.
    I have two identical set ups:  an iMac with FCE4 using a Mercury Elite AL Pro portable harddrive as the scratch disc.
    On one of the two computers, whenever we add or remove something from the timeline (in a 3 minute scene) the ENTIRE timeline forces us to rerender!
    It's very frustrating and making the editing process almost impossible.
    Help!
    Here are a few screenshots to help in the process (hopefully):

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/pushstartwagon/6511213175/ (properties of .mov files)

    The problem is that you're trying to edit H.264 clips.  Neither FCE nor FCP works with H.264 video natively, hence the need to constantly render.
    To use a proper workflow, convert the H.264 files PRIOR to importing them into an FCE project.  Since FCE only works with QuickTime DV or the AIC formats, you will need to convert the files so that they will match your Sequence settings in FCE.

  • Can someone solve the mystery for me?  I have old Super 8 movies when I play them on a TV and put my Macbook in front of them and record them it picks them up good but only gets part of them?

    Why does iMovie camera only record part of a home movie? It records them well but but there are many parts missing?

    no mystery ....
    'moving images' are created by projecting frames so fast, the human eye gets tricked, not to notice a slide-show but … a movie.
    a TV, esp. the old tube ones, 'write' a frame onto the screen, line by line (a frame is made of pixels, in rows and lines - take a very, very close look of your screen)
    the picture on the TV is shown for about a 1/30th of a second, a camera is able to record, letssay for example sake, a 1/60th = only half frame is 'seen'/recorded.
    .... it's never a good idea to record projected movies, not from a projection, not from a screen - you should synchronize both devices - which is for normal people like us impossible.

  • Adding a Glossary button which doesnt move the timeline on !

    I'm using Captivate 3. On each page there is a
    backwards/forwards button. On this one module we've now added a
    'Glossary button'. If the user clicks this it opens up a external
    PDF file in a seperate window. That works fine.
    Say they are at the end of a page , the page is paused as its
    waiting for them to click Back/Forward or Menu.
    However if they click the Glossary button this moves the
    timeline forward as its a kind of 'continue' which is frustrating
    as it then moves to the next page. I just want them to be able to
    click Glossary as many times as they want and the program doesnt
    move on a page.
    Has anyone come across this before ? Just want a button which
    doesnt seem to move on ! Its not set to continue at all. Just set
    to open an external file
    Regards

    Hello P_SJ,
    The way I would tackle this would be to create the button in
    Adobe Flash (including the link to the PDF document) and then
    import this into Captivate as an animation. The reason for me
    suggesting this is because with Images and Animations you can make
    the object persist for the entire project (Options tab > Display
    for > rest of project).
    If you don't need the button to persist then you could just
    disable the Pause after option (Options tab) in the Button dialog
    and set the On success menu option to Open URL or file.
    I guess that even if you did need the button to persist you
    could just copy the button and paste this onto all the relevant
    slides. That might work as well.

  • Moving Around the Timeline

    Hi,
    Just a quick question about moving around the timeline. I'm using the up and down arrow keys to jump between cuts, but for some reason I can jump back beween cuts, but when clips are stepped up it doesn't seem to let me jump forward to the next edit.(I'm on the FCP keyboard config)
    Also, to jump forward the begining, or back to the end I'm supposed to use the home/end key. does anyone know what this is on a MacBook Pro keyboard?
    Thx

    I'm using the up and down arrow keys to jump between cuts, but for some reason I can jump back beween cuts, but when clips are stepped up it doesn't seem to let me jump forward to the next edit.
    I assume you're referring to when you have more than one track with clips on them. In that case, you need to be mindful of which tracks are targeted; that controls which tracks are subject to the Next/Previous Edit commands.
    For example:
    Any track that isn't targeted will be ignored by the Next/Previous Edit commands. Just click the header "button" to enable or disable a track. Track targeting affects many other operations in Premiere Pro--for example, adding edits or applying transitions. Check out this Help document page for some more info: Targeting tracks
    Not sure about the MBP keyboard question, but a Google search for such turned up this: Home and End Keys on the Macbook Pro

  • I.Movie Help - joining a theme and trailer together?

    I am using i.movie 11 (v9.0.02) and have created a soccer match movie.  I also created a trailer for this movie.
    1.  How do you join the two together.  As I had to create two separate projects, or am I doing something wrong?
    2.  What's the best way to move across to i.DVD to create the final movie for burning?
    From i.Movie I shared them with i.Tunes using a large format as I was told this would give a better quality finish.  However, once I started creating my DVD I noticed that I couldn't put the trailer and the movie together (I want them to continually flow) so I had to open a new 'slideshow' and add them both into that. Whilst watching the movie back it came out a bit fuzzy?  This also happened when I created a new movie folder and put just the movie of the game in there. More importantly how to I keep a good quality finish?
    Can anyone give me some help as I need this for the whole soccer team.

    1.  How do you join the two together.  As I had to create two separate projects, or am I doing something wrong?
    No you are doing the right thing. Themes vs. Trailers force you to pick one or the other. So you would have to do two seperate projects to get both visual elements to appear.
    2.  What's the best way to move across to i.DVD to create the final movie for burning?
    You would Share to Media Browser for both versions the Theme and the Trailer versions of the projects. Then in iDVD you would click on the Media button and then the Pictures button and then look for your projects under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Then you would drag each project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.
    From i.Movie I shared them with i.Tunes using a large format as I was told this would give a better quality finish.
    You don't want to share to iTunes, but you do want to Share to Media Browser and then in iDVD pull the projects from the Media Browser back into the iDVD project window. That's the highest quality step you can maintain. So skip Share to iMovie, Share to Media browser instead.
    However, once I started creating my DVD I noticed that I couldn't put the trailer and the movie together (I want them to continually flow) so I had to open a new 'slideshow' and add them both into that.
    It sounds to me like you might be better off combining the two projects in iMovie, and there's some workarounds to do that, rather than use the iDVD tools to try and combine them into one movie. Here's what you should try to do:
    1. Using the Trailer version of your project, In iMovie go to the Share menu > Share using QuickTime
    2. Before you save it click the Options buttons as you want to set things in a way that iMovie can reuse your saved movie
    3. Click the settings button, under that choose Apple Intermediate Codec:
    Then save the .mov file to the Desktop, so you can easily find it.
    4. Go to the Non-Trailer version of your project and open it in the Project browser window (the top half of the iMovie screen)
    5. Go to File Menu > Import Movies... then navigate out to your Desktop and find the .mov file. And import it into your iMovie Events folder.
    6. Find the newly imported Trailer, and drag it into the Non-trailer project which is currently open in your Project browser. Drag and drop it at the begining or the end depending on where you want it to appear.
    7. Go to the Share Menu > Share to Media Browser and let that run until it finishes, then quit iMovie
    8. Open iDVD click on the Media button, then click on the Movies button. Find your shared project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. This exported version should have now BOTH of your projects consolidated into one iMovie project. Drag that into the iDVD project window and burn the DVD-R disk.

    Need to convert music videos that are tagged as "Movies" and re-rag them as "Music Videos" to get them out of my movies library and into the Music Video folder. Likewise, I have some educational videos that belong in "Podcasts." Help?

    Select/highlight the ones that you want to change in your iTunes library, do Get-Info (control-I) and change their Media Kind on their Options tab to 'Music Video' - and then similarly for the podcasts.

  • In Aperture 3, how can I easily move entire projects out of my main Ap Library into other libraries?  My Ap library is running super slow because it's overloaded l so I have created two new libraries, but can't seem to move the projects into them

    In Aperture 3, how can I easily move entire projects out of my main Ap Library into other libraries?  My Ap library is running super slow because it's overloaded, so I have created two new libraries, but can't seem to move the projects into them?

    Hello Annabel,
    To move entire projects export them as Aperture Libraries, and then import those Libraries into the other Aperture Library:
    Select the Project in the Inspector, then
    File -> Export -> Project as Library
    In the other Library do:
    File -> Import  -> Library/ Project
    But I am not quite convinced, that the size of your current Aperture Library is responsible for the slowness of Aperture - Aperture is designed to cope with huge libraries.
    You may want to post your hardware setup and details of your library, and some of the hardware experts here may help you to find the reason for the slowness.
    A huge library should only be a problem, if the projects are too big, and if you have many, many smart albums at the root level of your library.
    So keep the projects small, and try to move some of your smart albums to lower levels in your folder structure (then Aperture does not need to scan all of your images to build the smart album).
    Other reasons for Aperture's slowness may be, e.g.
    An overfull system drive and/or external drive (keep at least 20% of your drives empty)
    lack of RAM
    a corrupted Aperture Library, that needs repairing
    Have you checked those options, before you split your library? It would be a pity to split it, for you would loose the ability to browse all parts at the same time, to use all your images in the Media Browser, etc.

  • Attempt to move main timeline from inside a movie clip breaks menu buttons.

    I am attempting to have the main timeline move from a stopped position over a movie clip to frame 1, where my start menu is.
    The code I'm using does move the timeline but in doing so it somehow breaks the 4 buttons I have in frame 1.
    My code in the movie clip:
    stop()
    function replayMovie(event:MouseEvent):void
    MovieClip(parent).gotoAndStop(1);
    Menu.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, replayMovie);
    My code in frame 1 of the main timeline:
    stop();
    function bo(event:MouseEvent):void
    gotoAndPlay(21)
    SoundMixer.stopAll()
    espesp.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, bo);
    function ho(event:MouseEvent):void

    SoundMixer.stopAll()
    espeng.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, ho);
    function yo(event:MouseEvent):void
    gotoAndPlay(41)
    SoundMixer.stopAll()
    engesp.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, yo);
    function go(event:MouseEvent):void
    gotoAndPlay(51)
    SoundMixer.stopAll()
    engeng.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, go);
    The error output when I use my Menu button at the end of the movie clip.

    For the sake of space, I'll leave out all the package declarations and class declarations and just talk about the functions.
    First, the Game class, it has two functions.  The first one is the constructor function and it launches at the beginning of the game:  First the Game function:
    public function Game():void
    //Game code goes here
    }//Game
    We want to listen for someone to click the mouse on the MenuPage, so lets create a new MenuPage and add a listener to the button contiained within it.
    public function Game():void
    menuPage = new MenuPage;
    menuPage.startButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startGame);
    addChild(menuPage);
    }//Game
    You will notice that before I declared a variable var menuPage:MenuPage, but that's all I did was declare it.  I didn't really make a new instance of it, I just set aside space for it.  In the first line within the Game function, I'm actually turning that variable into a new instance of a MenuPage.
    We don't have a picture of this imaginary menuPage instance, but lets' assume that in our MenuPage MovieClip in the library, we created a SimpleButton called startButton.  Here, I'm adding an EventListener that patiently waits for someone to click that button.  Once we receive that event, Flash is told to call the startGame function.
    As you get better at this, you'll get into custom events, and the eventListener for the button will exist in the MenuPage class file, or even in another class file that you create just for the button.  Something like StartButton.as  But for now, we can do it as above.
    Now the startGame function:
              public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
    //Remove the start Page
    //Add the zombie
    //Add the gun
    }//startGame
    And we'll replace those comments with real code.  It follows along with what we just did above.
    public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
    zombie = new Zombie;
    addChild(zombie);
    gun = new Gun;
    addChild(gun);
    And we also want to clean up some by removing the menuPage, and throwing out the eventListener.
    public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
    zombie = new Zombie;
    addChild(zombie);
    gun = new Gun;
    addChild(gun);
    menuPage.startButton.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.Click,startGame);
    removeChild(menuPage);
    }//startGame
    Now our Game class is complete.
    The Zombie Class
    public function zombieWalk(evt:Event):void
    this.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,zombieWalk);
    this.x = this.x + 10;
    }//zombieWalk
    Notice we've added a function to the Zombie Class.
    The first function adds an EventListener to the zombie.  We can use the word this and actionScript knows we're talking about the zombie that the class is written for.  This listener fires off every frame.  If our FLA file is set to 12fps, then 12 times every second it will call on the zombieWalk function.
    The zombie walk function moves the zombie 10 pixels to the right every time the function is called.
    On a more advanced level, you'll want to add animation in the MovieClip to move the zombie legs.  You'll also want to use Timer events to space out how often the funtion fires and not ENTER_FRAME events.  And you'll want to use a static constant to establish how far the zombie moves.  We have it now set to 10 pixels, but that can get irritating if we want to change that value later.  But again, baby steps.
    And finally, the Gun class
    public function Gun():void
    this.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fireGun);
    }//function
    public function fireGun(evt:MouseEvent):void
    this.gotoAndPlay(2);
    }//fireGun
    First we add an EventListener for when someone clicks on the gun.  Once this happens, the listener calls on the fireGun function.
    The fireGun function takes advantage of the frames within the Gun MovieClip.  Say we have three frames in the Gun MovieClip.  The first is just a picture of the gun.  The second is the gun with a flash coming out of the nozzle.  And the third is the gun at rest again.  The line this.gotoAndPlay(2) sends the gun to the second frame with the flash graphic.
    For this to work, each frame in the Gun MovieClip has to have some stop and play commands.
    But.. you said no code on our timeline!! Liar!
    I know.  This is the exception.  You will need basic stop() commands and gotoAndPlay commands to loop animations.  Any MovieClip that has more than one frame will need something to control it.
    So our Gun MovieCLip has the following:
    Frame 1: stop();
    Frame 2: no actionScript... and I mean nothing, not even the words, "no actionScript"
    Frame 3: gotoAndStop(1);
    This will loop the gun to the beginning and wait for the next time the user clicks the gun.
    Advanced features of the Gun class might include a Bullet.as sub-class that creates a bullet MovieClip to fly across the screen.  Sound to play when the shooting takes place.  Object collision detection to see if the bullet hits the target.  And a means by which a custom event will tell the Game.as class that a zombie has been hit and it should be removed from the stage.
    As you go down the rabbit hole of ActionScript 3, you will find yourself at a point where it's just a matter of getting the syntax right for all the built in functions and classes.  Arrays, Loaders, casting variable types.. all that stuff will come.
    I hope this has been helfpul.  It's been on my to-do list for a long time.  When I first started out, no one could provide me with basic answers for how all these classes and whatnot worked.  After teaching myself AS3 for 2 years and reading a gabillion books, I think I've gotten to a point where I'm pretty comfortable with it all.

  • Have lots of DVD movies, can I add them to iTunes to watch on my apple TV?

    I have lots of DVD movies, can I add them to my Itunes so I can play them on my apple TV? How do I do it?
    Thx

    Sorry, but if you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries) and hence Apple explicitly forbids such posts. We're therefore not allowed to discuss it here.   Some DVDs and Blu-Ray movies come with a "digital copy" that allows you to download a copy of the movie from the iTunes Stores. You might see if any of the DVDs you have come with such a feature. Not all digital copies are redeemable in the iTunes Store, and some may have expired.
    If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) is one of the more popular converters. Once converted, you just drag the movie into the iTunes window on your computer.
    Regards.

    Hello,
    This is the page with the button problem - http://blue123a.businesscatalyst.com/select.

    What can I do ?

    1. Is your external HD connected by firewire?
    2. mpeg2 is the final compressed delivery format of a DVD, not intended for editing, and iMovie cannot handle such files, so you need to convert them first:
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:

    which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
