Moving Photos between users

Hi I am trying to clean up computer & am new to iPhoto. We have 5 members of family + 1 user for family photos as users on one mac. All have down loaded photos into their individual photo library resulting in a massive double up of pics & also pic that should be in family user not being there.
My Qu is can I import/export photos between users on same mac. We are using iPhoto 09
Thanks
Chris

Enable iPhoto Sharing In each iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window and from the individual libraries to the Main one.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.

  • Sharing photos between users

Hello....I'm new to the MAC world and I'm having an issue with Iphoto. I have an account and my wife has an account on our mac. The pictures she has in her account cannot be viewed by myself, and vice versa. I have not been able to figure out how to share those photos between users. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again James

first be sure you are up to date - this works starting with iPhoto '09 version 8.0.2
Sharing via the Shared Folder -- Another major annoyance with versions of iPhoto prior to iPhoto '09 was that you couldn't just put your iPhoto Library in the /Users/Shared folder to share it among multiple accounts on the same Mac, since iPhoto always set the permissions on thumbnails to the account that imported the photos, preventing other accounts from editing those photos and having the edits reflected in the thumbnails.
That limitation has now been fixed in iPhoto '09, so you can share an iPhoto library merely by moving it to /Users/Shared and then double-clicking it to open in iPhoto from each account. You may be prompted to repair permissions on the first access - click the Repair button to do that. Note that this also works for storing an iPhoto library on an external hard disk that's shared among users or on a network volume for access across a fast network.
Only one person may access a shared iPhoto library at a time.

  • Can I transfer photos between users on same macbook?

Can I transfer photos between users on same macbook? I've exported them out of iPhoto into a folder on desktop. Would like to move them into other User account on same laptop.

I did figure this out eventually and am going to record it here so later, when i ultimately forget the twists and turns I took to make this happen, I'll be able to come back and see....For me it was not as simple as John (above) offered...First: Export photos from iPhoto into folder on desktop. Click on the folder and select from the top left corner File - Check info- click the box beside shared folder- scroll down to Sharing & Permission and make sure the other user acccount is added to who can read & write.
If you haven't done this already go into System Preferences- Sharing- check the box beside File Sharing- click on File Sharing as well and 2 windows will appear- Shared Folders and Users. Select the shared folder you want to use and in the User window add the other user account to who can read & write.
Next: Open Finder- select Public Folder- drag photo folder into it.
Now log off and open your other User profile. Open Finder. Select Macintosh HD in the side bar- select Users Folder- select the original User profile you want your photos from- select Public Folder- your photo folder should be there, drag it onto your Desktop or directly into iPhoto. If a block occurs saying you aren't alllowed to see this folder then you missed a step in the whole file sharing business.
Viola! it worked. Hope this helps someone else

  • Moving photos between libraries

I take lots of photos, and, with previous incarnations of iPhoto, this was a bit of a problem. To get around it, I created multiple users on my computer, each with a themed library (family, travel, hobbies, etc.)
With iPhoto 6 I can have much larger libraries, and multiple libraries for a single user. I have migrated my libraries (via an external hard drive) back to my main user, and open them as needed without a problem.
Is there any way to move photos (original and modified, as a package) from one library to another? Or to merge libraries?
I can export and then import from one to another, but I lose the original. Or I can burn to a disc, and then import, but this is time consuming and wasteful of discs.
    Any other suggestions?

    luba:
Yes there is. The paid version of iPhoto Library Manager will let you move photos between libraries along with the originals, keywords, etc. It's about the only way to do it.
With iPhoto's new alias mode there is a way to have several users use the same set of source files but each have their own edits, etc. You would place the source files in the Shared library and everyone use them as their source files. FWIW I've created some Tutorials to assist users covert from a conventional library to an alias based system.

  • Share photos between users

Is there a simple way to share content between user accounts? Photos, photostream and itunes?

Any sort of data is accessible for all users on one machine if stored under /Users/Shared.
So, you could move your iTunes and iPhoto libraries there.
With iPhoto it's simple: Quit iPhoto, then move the iPhoto Library file there, then each user may double-click on the file in Finder.
With iTunes it's a tiny bit trickier: Go to its Preferences -> Avanced tab, and change the media folder location there. First for the user who "owns" the folder now, then for the other users.

  • C3-01 - Moving Photos Between Folders On SD Memory...

I’m stumped on how to move photos between folders on the SD memory card in my new C3-01.
When I take a photo, it saves it to the ‘Images’ folder on the SD card, but there doesn’t appear to be an easy way to get it from that folder onto one of my other folders.
On my previous phone, I’d do the following –
    1 – Open the item
    2 – Go to ‘Options’
3 – Scroll down to ‘Move’
4 – When the list of available options was displayed, I’d highlight the ‘Memory card’, and press Options’ again to get an ‘Open folder’ option.
5 – Select the ‘Open folder’ option.
6 – Scroll down to the folder I wanted to put the photo in to.
However, on my C3-01, once I get to option 4 above, there don’t appear to be any other options available. I now have a situation where I’ve moved items from my Images folder on my memory card but can’t put them into any sub-folders.
Is this function no longer available? If so, it does seem a bit unusual.
    Hope someone can help.
    Many thanks

  • Moving photos between projects

I'm having a problem - erratically - moving photos from one project to another. When I select one photo & drag it to a different project - the entire project gets moved instead of just the one selected photo. (I've double checked that there are no photos selected before I select the photo that I want to move.)
If I cancel the move, I end up with missing thumbnails & sometimes missing photos.
This is erratic because sometimes dragging one photo to another project works.

It is really hard to tell what might be happening - we need more details:
What is your Aperture version? The most recent Aperture 3.4.1?
Are your images referenced or managed? Raw or jpegs?
How did you edit them? With Aperture or an external editor?
Do you create new versions when editing and stack them, or edit the current version?
And after moving to a new project, the preview of the version shows the original master, but the thumbnail shows the original edits? Is that correct?
I Suspect, when you moved the images, they lost their previews. As a test, duplicate an image version (Photo > Duplicate Version) and force the generation of a new preview (Ctrl-click, hold down the options key ⌥, select "Generate Preview"). Does that bring back the edits? Also you could try to export the image version ans see, if the edits are still there.

  • Working and moving photos between two open libraries?

I'm not sure if it is possible, but can you work in and transfer photos between two open libraries at the same time? It is more an organizational question...i.e. I want to have some photos only appear in a particular library...

    nk3:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can only have one library open at a time but with iPhoto Library Manager (in the free mode) you can transfer 20 photos at a time between libraries and keep keywords, comments, etc.

  • Moving Photos Between iPhoto Libraries

I have established a second iPhoto library but an not clear on how to move photos from the original library to the second library. Seems it should be simple - from the original library I highlight the photos to be exported to the second library, then click "export", but the export to the second library doesn't happen. Also, while in the second library I tried to import the highlighted photos from the original library, but that didn't work either. I have iPhoto 6.0.6 Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    HDP

    HDP,
You cannot export directly into another iPhoto Library folder, because all files must be imported in order to be recognized by the database. Don't ever try to manipulate your files directly inside the iPhoto Library folder. Importing photos from one library into another will get you the photos, but strip them of their albums and other library metadata.
The only way to move photos between libraries and preserve albums, keywords, and other metadata is to use iPhoto Library Manager. It will save you a lot of work.
    Regards.

  • Moving iTunes between User Accounts on home Computer

Hi all - I'd appreciate some advice please. When my son set up iTunes on our home XP computer he did so in his own user account. This cannot be accessed by my daughter in her user account or in the general family account. How do I move the base set up between user profiles on the same computer?
    Regards
    Phil

My advice is to consolidate your son's library to a shared folder.
Then everyone can access the music from their accounts, yet keep separate ratings & playcounts, etc.
If you just move things around in windows, your son will either lose ratings & playcounts, or the paths to the music. Here is how to consolidate:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
    Here is some light reading
    Multiple users, use Method 1:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
Sharing files on same PC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
This is important so you don't get duplicates files and fill up your hard drive.

  • Moving many but not all iPhoto photos between users

My wife and I share an iMac with separate user accounts. We'd like to move lots of photos from iPhoto in one user account to another. But after we exported original images and video from one account to a shared drive, about a third of the exported images and video failed to import into the other iPhoto account. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks.

Thanks. The error message I get is "Unreadable files. The following files could not be imported. The files are in an unrecognized format." It's odd, because they are all jpg's, they are all photos taken by iPhone 5's, and they all exported from one user's iTunes library in original format. So I wouldn't expect problems.
We previously shared a library but for us it might be easier to manage the family photos if we each keep the set of photos that we take in our own user libraries.

  • How do I share photos between user on same laptop

    Hi.
When I ipmort photos from my memorycard in iphoto, I want those pictures to be visible on my wifes user as well as mine. But they are only visible on one user account.
Can anyone help me with this?

    Enable "Sharing".
In iPhoto 9.4.3 this works well between different accounts on the same computer.
In the iPhoto Preferences > Sharing set "Share my Photos".
And your wife should enable "Look for shared Photos".
She will then be able to browse your shared photos from the "Shared" section of the source list.
One thing to note: You both have to be signed into your respective accounts for this to work. Your wife can only browse your iPhoto library, while iPhoto is active in your user account. So she will have to log into her account by fast user switching - don't quit iPhoto and log off, when she starts working  from her account with her iPhoto library. While she is browsing your iPhoto library, you will see this warning, if you are trying to quit iPhoto.

  • Moving photos between two iphoto libraries

Is there any way to easily move photos from one iphoto library to another? We have two macs at home and my wife and I keep separate iphoto libraries on each one. Both computers are using iphoto '08 (version 7.1.2). I back up both libraries on an external hard drive. Recently my wife was traveling with one computer and I needed to access some pictures that were on it. The only way I could figure was to:
    1) hold down the option key when opening iphoto on my machine, choose the library on the external
drive that had the photos I needed.
    2) Then from within iphoto export those photos.
    3) Then close out iphoto and reopen it with the library on my machine.
    4) Then finally import the photos into the library on my machine.
Is there any faster and easier way to extract photos in a situation like this?

Like Larry said, use iPLM to copy events or albums between libraries while keeping metadata, keywords, titles and descriptions, intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can you "share" photos between users?

quick, likely dumb question - we're new to the mac:
my wife and i are set up as two users with password log-in, etc. yesterday, she uploaded all of our photos to iPhoto on HER account; how do i access those photos on MY account using iPhoto?
thanks for your help in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Finally: If you’re comfortable in the Terminal, and understand File Permissions, ACL’s etc., some folks have reported success using the process outlined here . (Note this page refers to 10.4, but it should also work on 10.5). If you’re not comfortable with the terminal, and don’t know an ACL from the ACLU, then you’re best doing something else... Oh, and the warning about simultaneous users still applies.
