Moving Sections of a Sequence

Once a section of a sequence is selected and copied how can I create an insert rather than overwrite edit when it is pasted at a new position on the timeline?
This is something I did all the time on avid, using the clipboard, but can't find a similar process on FCP.
Any ideas?

How do I Export a -section- of a sequence?

I have an hour-long sequence that was recorded one take without breaks.
I've chopped it using the blade tool into smaller "chapters"
Is there any way to export just one section of the sequence?
Or, is there any way to export these chopped "chapters" into individual movies?
I know about chapter markers and I do not want to setup individual sequences. So, I do not believe that there is a solution, but figured I'd ask.

in future, instead of using the Blade tool in the timeline you could instead work with the source clip in the viewer, add a marker (press m) at each point where you want to divide the clip ... when it's all marked up you can then click on the disclosure triangle which will appear to the left of the source clip (in the browser window), select all the marker points displayed there, and then drag them into a new bin ... voila, you'll find you have magically created subclips to represent each of your chapters ... select them all and then chose File > Batch Export and away you go
for now tho, go down into your bladed up timeline, place the play head at the start of the edit
1) press I to mark an In point,
2) press the down arrow to jump the playhead to the next cut point
3) press O to mark an Out point
4) press Cmd U to create a subclip
now repeat step 1) through 4) until you have made a subclip for every chapter
back in the browser, select all the subclips you just made and choose File > Batch Export

Copy and Paste section of a sequence...

Is it possible to copy a section of a sequence, including all tracks, transitions, and effects contained therein, and paste it into another sequence? In other words, perhaps by setting IN and OUT points in the Program Monitor, copying that area, and pasting to another sequence. Including all tracks and effects contained therein.

Moving sections of songs a la Garageband

s there a way to move "sections" of songs each having many tracks and regions. I.E. in Garageband you can label an entire section of music verse 1 then another section chorus 1. Then if you want to swap sections all you have to do is move the 2 markers and all the corresponding track/regions move with it. It seems that in order to this in Logic, I constantly have to highlight large amounts of tracks/regions and continually drag back and forth. I know you can move the markers but the corresponding regions don't move with them. What would be the easiest way to achieve this. Appreciate the help!

Sure you can do this with: "cut/insert time" from the edit menue. Check the availbale functions - very helpful for arranging indeed. Make sure to move/delete the automationalready written onto the tracks - otherwise you'll run into trouble. For automated Busses/Auxes create Arrange tracks and put some empty regions onto them - then the automation of those Busses/Auxes will also get moved/cut.

How to synchronize section within a sequence runnin over parallel model

Have this sequence using the parallel model, I want to synchronize some section of it such that the steps been executed only in one of the executions; the Batch Synchronization steps didn't worked, apparently they work only if running the batch model. Tnx.

I wonder myself too, why not to use something like batch model, unfortunatelly here they use a custom model which is used in a number of testers and has a NI Parallel Model shape, never used before for batch type testing. I tryed this:
i) Use a Randevois before my Only One Thread Synchronized (OOTS to abbreviate) section.
ii) Enclose OOTS steps in a separated sequence.
iii)Call this OOTS sequence after the Randevois but conditioned to only executed by socket 0 (like you suggest using socket index).
iv) The calling to the OOTS sequence its been done launching a separated thread, and storing this in an ActiveX reference
v) Set a Wait for Thread step after the calling, in this way every thread will wait and know about the result of OOTS steps.

Final Cut Error when moving .mp4 clip into sequence

I attempted to move an .mp4 clip into the sequence and it says "General Error" before Final Cut Pro Force closes itself. In the error details it says something about a thread error whatever that means. It will play fine in the Quicktime Player but will not open in Final Cut or allow itself to be moved into the timeline. Anyone know why this is happening?
The .mp4 is in H-264 format and I have Final Cut Pro 7.0.3

Editing h.264 without conversion is not supported in FCP. You need to convert your clip(s) to an FCP edit friendly codec. What codec is appropriate is a function of what the properties of the source h.264 clip are.
You can find the properties for your clip by clicking on the clip in the FCP browser so that it is selected, then typing Command + 9. Either report what the item properties are for the clip, or take a screen shot and post the screen shot here if it is easier.
The reason that the clip plays back in Quicktime is that quicktime is a player, not an editor.

Accordion widget - moving sections

Is it possible to move the sections in the accordion widget? I want to move the last section to the top of the accordion.

I did offer you two work flows to have images on top of question slides. I don't think they'll change the design of question slides (following the basic SCORM defined types), has been the same since many, many versions. But you can now more easily create custom question slides than ever before with learning interactions, variables and shared actions. Your idea of 'basic functionality' is maybe not the same for the majority of users
You could log some feature requests, if you want to have impact on changes for the future. Personally I don't feel that the change to a learning interaction is such a basic functionality. Every application has its proper ways, and Captivate is certainly not an exception.

Moving images in Video sequence

I am having problems moving a picture that I am putting ontop of Video content in the top left Video viewing/edit area. It worked intill yesterday, so I don't know what happened.

Can you provide us with more detail on what you have, and what you wish to accomplish.
It sounds a bit like a Picture in Picture (PiP), but you are having trouble with the Position of that PiP. However, I could be way off base there.
If it IS PiP, then all you need to do is Select that Image/Clip on the higher Video Track, and go to the Effects Control Panel, where you will adjust the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position.

Separate Sections of a Sequence with different encoding settings

Is it possible to set different encoding settings for different parts of a Final Cut sequence? If yes, what must I do?

All I want to change is the quality setting of the h.264 codec.

All these movies start off with an intro, which needs a quality setting of 75% to look good. The rest of the screencast looks good enough with a setting of 50%.
All other parameters shall remain unchanged.

Track Sequence Lost when moving files

Hi there,
We had a breech of access in one of our labs, and an account that was created by a student (and set to admin) was deleted. The student was working on several FCP projects in this account, and rather than deleting the data I copied the entire user folder to the /Users/Shared folder for the student to access within his own account (set the approriate permissions and everything).
The student is now claiming that after the files were moved, that the track sequence is now not there. There were like 4-5 video tracks and many audio tracks. The only thing that shows up is one video track, and 2 audio tracks. Is there anything that can be done, or is the data lost? Is it possible for this to happen? Thanks for any help, as I am not that familiar with Final Cut Pro.

If you click on the desktop and press command(apple)+F and do a search for 'Autosave Vault' you will find a folder that stores all the saved FCP projects that your system has archived.
Each project will have it's own holder within the Autosave Vault folder.
When you look in a folder, the most recent version is at the BOTTOM, not the top.
If you go to User Preferences in FCP, in the bottom left corner you will see the time settings for the Autosave function. If you open up the Log and Capture window and go to 'Scratch Disc' you will see where the files are saved to.

Audio clips change when moved from sequence to sequence in FCP7

Working on a documentary piece within FCP7 and am having problems with moving audio from one sequence to another. Both sequences have the same settings, but when I copy the audio clip and paste it into the new sequence, the audio that pastes is from the same clip but is not what I copied. Does anyone know why this is happening and/or how to fix this?

Just to back up Michael. The native sample rate for video is 48khz. To work at anything other than that is to ask for problems.

Program design assistance.... Component moving

OK, I really need some assistance... I'm trying to build a organisation system for a 6hr system whereby I have several different people each who get meetings scheduled at 30minute intervals. The way I want to display the data is as a scrollpane, with a people column and a timelined section then a sequence of panels or buttons which can be moved around to alter the scheduling.

the functionality I am seeking is to be able to drag an appointment (eg panel/button 'e') to a different slot (eg b) which would then shuffle b to c, c to d etc. I'd also like to be able to move an appointment to a different person which would then shuffle all following appointments left to fill the gap, and push the appointments on the new person's list to the right to allow the new appointment to be placed (pushing an appointment off the end of the schedule).I have used swing in the past but am at a loss as to how I should allow these panels to be moved and record the fact that they have.

Changing date (and sequence) of events by changing dates of photos no longer seems to work. Any idea what to do?

I am scanning in old slides and negatives (from the 1960s and 70s), and I want to get the resulting "events" in sequence from when the photos were taken, rather than when they were scanned. So I have been changing the dates of the photos, and previously this resulted in the associated event moving to the proper sequence. This definitely worked a month or so ago, both with prints scanned in on a flat-bed scanner, and also with slides and negatives scanned with a Veho scanner. That was faulty, however, and so it has been replaced with a Plustek 7500i scanner, using SilverFast scanning software, and importing the resulting images into iPhoto. I have recently tried to change the dates of the resulting events, and it doesn't seem to work as it used to. There has been an update to iPhoto 9.1.3 since my earlier success.
Take for example one event, CS73A. Hovering over the event in the "All events" display gives dates of 1 Apr 2011 to 2 Apr 2011; these are the dates the slides were scanned in. If I open the event and choose the Info tab, it gives the event date as 02/03/1973 (which is the approximate date that I changed it to). I had done a batch change on the event this time, so the date and time on the first slide is 2 March 1973 09:30:48. Each successive slide is 1 minute later, and the last is 2 March 1973 10:08:48 (38 slides). I asked for the dates in the files to be changed as well.
I don't know what I'm doing that's different from before. The only things I can think of are (a) something has changed in the iPhoto update, or (b) the SilverFast software stores the scanning date in some part of the EXIF that iPhoto can read but not change. I don't have tools to examine the EXIF unfortunately.
What to do?

Chris, I have run into the same problem.
Try this:
Open an event with more than one photo in it.
Adjust the date of one or more photos. The event date does not update.
Delete any one photo. The event date now updates to match the above date change.
Undo the delete photo. The event date stays matching.
Change the date of any photo again. The event date updates now every time.
If you close the event and reopen it, you have to start over with the delete one photo thing.
I don't understand it but it works here.
I also have had the problem of events not sorting themselves in order of the dates when VIEW, SORT, BY DATE is selected. This seems to affect only the events were photo date changes had been made. Using the delete thing seems to keep the events in order.
Another funny thing: When I put photos into iMovie the times in iMovie show as 7 hours off the photo time.
I think Apple owes us an update to iLife!

File Specs for Animations into a 16:9 Sequence

I captured mini dv footage shot in 16:9. I received graphics to cut into my sequence from a post house. These 5 second qt's crash my FCP. They are in the apple animation codec 853 x 480 (1024 x 480), Millions. To work around this I opened them in QT and exported them as DV, 720 x 480 (853 x 480), Millions. When these are cut into my sequence part of the bottom of the image is cut off. So 2 questions:
1) Any ideas on why the original graphics crashed FCP?
2) Why is the bottom of the graphic being chopped off?
Moving On:
The final sequence was exported - QT movie - Current Settings. It was brought into DVDSP. Under preferences the display mode was changed to 16:9 letterbox and encoding aspect ratio was changed to 16:9. When the dvd is played on my TVI think it looks right.
Sequence #2 was only from the graphics. The seq. settings were matched to the graphic clips' settings when cut into the new sequence. This gave me

Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
Field Dominance: None
Compressor: DV/DVDPRO - NTSC
I exported this sequence the same way and brought it into DVDSP. The final dvd looked correct.
The dilemma is that these dvds were brought to a studio doing a live audience taping. They were dubbed to digibeta and then rolled into the show. The director pointed out that my images didn't fill the 16:9 monitor and needed to be distorted to do so. So my stuff was stretched vertically which was rather disturbing. I'd like to avoid this ever happening again so if anyone has experience in this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

These are animated graphics. There's a 5 second opening and moving logos etc. I'm unclear as to what specs should have been given to the graphic house because their original files crashed my FCP system. And I don't know why my final playable dvd sequences didn't fill the 16:9 screen when dubbed to digibeta and played back.

Why can I not preview and render all sequence clips on a CS6 project when using CC?

I am having issues with rendering all of the sections in my sequence. Some clips will render just fine while others simply display as a blank screen (see screenshot 1). Also, parts of a clip will render while others will not (see screenshot 2).
