Moving Snow Leopard iPhoto Libraries to new iMac with Lion

Can I move iPhoto Librarys from a iBook G4 running Snow Leopard to a iMac running Lion and if so how?  Thanks, HJZ

Linc,
Thanks for the info, but I want to use an external FireWire drive as the target disk, not the old iMac.  I'd need to keep the external FireWire drive connected to the old iMac in order to use the screen, keyboard, mouse, etc.  Could I just connect the FW drive to the new iMac and then start up the new iMac in hopes it would "recognize" the external FireWire drive through Setup Assistant?

Since one month I have a new Imac with Lion.
I installed Ilife'11: when I open IDVD it doesn't find the Idvd themes.
    What is happening?

To get to the App Store, you need to upgrade the Tiger machine to Snow Leopard.

Without knowing what you have tried please open System Preferences - Sharing - File Sharing and select File Sharing. If you still have trouble you can call AppleCare in the morning when they re-open. You have 90 days of telephone support if you haven't already bought AppleCare.

  • Does anyone know why or what is the reason when starting a new iMac with Lion a gray bar sometimes appears when loading software?

Does anyone know why or what is the reason when starting a new iMac with Lion, sometimes a gray bar appears under the Apple that begins to shade to dark as it loads OS?  It does this on occasion.  One time the system loaded was VERY slow and terrible colors.  Pulled the plug, re-started the computer and it did not do this.  As I say, its only on occasion, not every time.  I noticed in the discussion page there were problems listed for 10.6 nothing for Lion.
    Please advise, if possible.

You should see this 4 option menu.  Click on Disk Utility:
In Disk Utility, Select FIRST AID and then VERIFY and then REPAIR the disk.
    Ciao.

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. Apple provides instructions in Printing Overview OS X Lion

What version of Logic do you have?
And if you end up upgrading, it's only $199 now.

  • Old iMac with Snow Leopard to new iMac with Lion - can I do this?

    Hi folks,
    1.  I have a 6 year old iMac running Snow Leopard (can't upgrade to Lion)
    2. Just bought a new iMac running Lion.
    3.  I want to migrate all accounts, files, apps, etc from old iMac to new iMac (about 150 Gb worth)..
    4. I would normally connect both iMacs either with an Ethernet cable or via wi-fi network and run Setup Assistant to move everything to the new iMac.
Based on my experience doing this on other Macs I have, I know it's gonna take 8 to 10 hours to migrate everything over to the new iMac so I'm looking for ways to migrate so my iMac isn't tied up all day and I don't have to spend all day in front of the computer making sure all is o.k.  So, if I make a bootable clone on a separate portable drive using SuperDuper, can I hook that drive up (instead of old iMac) to my new iMac and run Setup Assistant that way?  That would free up the old iMac to use while the new iMac crunches away copying all those files from the portable drive.  Will that work? Has anyone done this successfully?  Any cautions or things to watch for?
    Thanks everyone,
    Ed

  • Leopard iMac now,iPad2 now,new iMac with Lion coming in May,how do I handle moving to iCloud?

especially email, which is now in MacMail.
As titile says I have an aging pre Intel iMac running 10.5.8, an iPad 2 with the latest iOS and I am going to replace the old G5 iMac with a new iMac running Lion in May.
So I will transition my MobileMe to the Cloud before the world as we know it ends...
My question is whether I can get ahead of the game by using my iPad to move to the iCloud now, and catch up with the desktop transition later--will this result in chaos later?
I did not do a search for this because I could not fathom how to phrase the search .
I would be grateful if some iCloud gurus could unravel this for me.
    TIA
    Caroline

You can do either, if you migrate to iCloud now you will need to use iCloud.com from your browser to access your calendars and contacts though as iCal and address book will cease to sync.

  • Transferring old iPhoto library to new iMac with iPhoto 11

I have an external hard drive which contains my old iPhoto library (let's call it iPhoto A library) with about 10 years of pictures.  This was saved from an older version of iPhoto.  Since then, I started a new iPhoto library (let's call it iPhoto B library on my old computer but with iPhoto now upgraded to iPhoto 11).
My question is: now I have a brand new iMac with iPhoto 11 (and absolutely no pictures currently in it!).  How do I successfully transfer both of my iPhoto libraries over to my new iMac?  I would prefer that they be in one library, but I'm not strongly opposed if they need to be in separate library.  My second question: if they are in separate libraries, when do I save them?  Same folder?  Where?
By the way, when I try to open my iPhoto A library, it says "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work on this version of iPhoto.  Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade.  The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete."
Thanks so much to the Community for helping me!

How do I successfully transfer both of my iPhoto libraries over to my new iMac?
drag them over (of course they can not have the same name) - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
I would prefer that they be in one library, but I'm not strongly opposed if they need to be in separate library.
There is no way to do this with iPhoto - if you have iPhoto '11 version 9.3 or newer you can purchase Aperture and use it to merge libraries.  Or you can purchase iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use it to merge iPhoto libraries.
My second question: if they are in separate libraries, when do I save them?
Where ever you want - if you have seperate libraries you switch between them by depressing the option key and launching iPhoto and using the switch library window
By the way, when I try to open my iPhoto A library, it says "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work on this version of iPhoto.  Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade.  The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete."
That is correct - old versions of iPhoto can not access newer versions libraries
and what ever you choose to do be sure tha tyou backup procedures are backing up everything

  • PowerPC iMac 10.5 to new iMac with Lion

I will replace my iMac PowerPC running Leopard (not Snow Leopard) next month. Will I be able Migration Assistant to transfer files, applications, etc. to the new iMac? I have heard of problems if incompatible items are installed on the new macs with Lion. What should I do and NOT do?

    Hello,
There are caveats migrating from PPC to Intel, I had no problems, but that was to 10.6.8 using Target Disk Mode on the PPC Macs, see Kappy's fine/detailed "A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs"...
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
I'm not sure 10.9 can Migrate from 10.5.8, but to bypass needing a non-existant update for 10.5.8, you need a Firewire cable, likely a Thunderbolt to FW adapter, & boot the 10.5.8 Mac holding the t key, so it appears as a FW Hard Drive to the new one.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on macbook pro that came with Lion?

I recently bought a new MBP, model MC721LL/A, that was originally released with Snow Leopard. When I received it I found out that it had Lion installed. Can I install Snow Leopard on it? I have some software that is NOT Lion compatible and am waiting for an update, but till then wanted to stay with Snow Leopard.
Also, can I leave the Lion Restore partition on the hard drive for future use or will I need to do some kind of backup os the entire OS?

Mine did not include snow leopard disks.
I did try to startup from my Snow Leopard disk but it never finished the startup
Where did you get the Snow Leopard disc from if you did not originally have it?  In either case, the one you have now did you get it from the previous owner?  You need the system discs that originally came with the computer.
As to how to downgrade an os from Lion to Snow Leopard, you should post in the Mac OS X v10.7 Lion forum area.

  • Using timemachine backup of snow leopard system to restore on system with Lion

    Hello,
My son has a 13" MacBook Pro (2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which has a broken keyboard and a battery that won't charge.  He regularly uses timemachine to make full backups of his system.  We want to give him an old 13" MacBook Pro (2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo), which is currently running Lion Mac OS X 10.7.5.
Is it possible for him to restore his entire system from Time Machine running Snow Leopard to a MacBook Pro that has Lion?  If so, what are the best steps to have the target MacBook wiped or prepared for him to restore from his Time Machine back up, given that the systems are on different levels of OS X?
He's not wedded to keeping Snow Leopard - so can the migration occur without him having to upgrade his old broken MacBook Pro first?  Would the target Mac get "downgraded" to Snow Leopard on the restore (which would be ok too)?
Thanks in advance.  If there's any other info that will help clarify, please ask.

If he has no PPC apps that won't run on Lion, then the simplest thing to do is hook up the two machines and use the Migration Assistant to transfer his user account to the newer MBP. Once done, have him log into that account (assuming that it's an admin one), launch the Accounts prefPane, and delete the other accounts. That should do the trick.

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.
