MPEG-2 quality played on a monitor

Hi,
I have burnt a DVD using Encore 1.0. When the files are exported from Encore into a folder on the harddrive all the files including the VOB and IFO files all look fine and as they should do.
However when I burn exactly the same project onto an actual DVD the VOP file looks as it should but the IFO files look washed out, with the blacks being too light. This is the case when played on a computer monitor.
Unfortunately I'm not able to test it on a TV screen but I have heard that the quality for DVD MPEG-2s does not look correct when played on a computer.
Does anyone know if this is true and if it is the norm. If this is the case does anyone know of any way around this so that it can play properly on a monitor?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

The monitor isn't calibrated. What I meant by the VOB and IFO files is that when I play the video from the VOB file it looks as it should however if I play the video from the IFO file it looks washed out.
If it is a problem with the IRE levels shouldn't it look incorrect on all the files and look incorrect when the original MPEG-2 is rendered and not just from the IFO playback.
Also, before I outputted the MPEG-2 from after effects I set the levels to 16-235. Does that mean that the IFO files make it play from 16-235? Is there not a way to make it look correct for playback on both TV screen and monitor?
Thanks

    Thanks for the follow up.
Missing in this equation were the version of Premiere Elements that you were using and the computer operating system on which it was running. But...
The deed is done. But.....Until now and after you went ahead and moved to version 12, we now learn what version of Premiere Elements you were using. We still do not know the computer operating system involved.
You just said Premiere Elements 10. Premiere Elements 10 is hit by a serious known display issue if the computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card. In this issue, the only remedy is to roll back the driver version to about May 2013. The description of the problem and how to do the roll back are described in one of the Announcements at the top of this forum. What video card/graphics card does your computer use?
On another front, Adobe will be releasing a new version of Premiere Elements any day now. No one but Adobe knows the feature set for the new version. That type of information is announced at the moment of release of the new version.
So the remedy to the problem that you presented in this thread could have been...
    1. Rolling back the NVIDIA GeForce driver version to about May 2013 if possible (Windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit, may not be possible)
    2. Move to another version of Premiere Elements (which you did)
I offer the above for consideration so that you can review your decisions. We are pleased to learn that Premiere Elements 12/12.1 works for you.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions and ask for clarifications, but remember that the answers are in the details.

  • Why would my video clips be running too fast when played on the monitor panel?

I posted my problem earlier today, but re-reading it maybe I didn't explain myself well enough.
My main question is: "why would my video clips be running too fast when played on the monitor panel ?".  This is occuring after I have selected my media from the Tasks Panel and placed them in correct order in the Timeline/Sceneline.  I knew something was wrong when I could see that the clips were not indicating their right length when viewed in the (expanded) timeline.  They were compressed into just a few seconds, whereas the clips should have been at least 5 minutes.  I ran the clips in the monitor and sure enough they ran too fast, with a lot of jerking movements.
The 3 video clips I am trying to make into a HD PAL video were taken with my Nokia N8 mobile video camera. These are in mp4 format. Can this present a problem ?  Note that when I play these individual HD clips on my computer in (Windows Media Player) they run fine.
After I placed the clips in my Project Panel (or before in the Organize Workspace), I have perforned no change or manipulation of the clips.  They are in their original state.
Just too confirm that the clips did seem to be compressed, I burnt a DVD, the resultant video ran in a matter of seconds.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that is what the problem was.
Although the video camera on my Nokia N8, mobile was capturing at 25fps,
for some reason once transfered over to PrE9 (via file transfer), the clip was interpreted as 500fps.  Once in Interpret Footage I was able to change the fps to 25.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Can't see video playing through external monitor

Well it use to work, seeing the Timeline play through my external monitor.. Here's what I have, FCP 4.5 HD hooked up through Firewire to a JVC tape deck which in turn is hooked up through RCA cables to a small tv set. I have the following setup in FCP Audio/Video settings>Device control Preset: Firewire NTSC and Video Playback: Apple firewire NTSC. I've unplugged the Firewire cable a couple of times and still can't get the Timeline to play in my external monitor. Here's the funny part if I go to Log and Capture I can control the JVC deck and see my mini DV not only play in the Log and Capture window but also in the external monitor. I would think I won't be able to. I must be forgetting a setting in FCP to see my Timeline play in my monitor but for the life of me I can't remeber. Appreciate all sugestions!

    Randy,
Many thanks. I really should not use keyboard commands that I'm not sure about.! I probably hit cmd F12 instead of just plain old F12 to do a superimpose. I'm going to start a list of all these settings I need to check. Someday I hope to be able to help someone figure out a problem. Again thanks for taking time to help me out and keeping a few more hairs on my head.

  • CS4 Premiere Pro Clips Won't Play in Source Monitor/Program Monitor

I can't get clips to play in source monitor/program monitor/preview pane in Pr Pro.  I have spent hours looking through the forums to try and find a fix and I have troubleshot the following.....
    1. Codecs are not broken... or seem to be working according to Sherlock
    2. Video and audio drivers up to date
    3. Unistalled and re-install Pr Pro then updated via updater
    Here is the funny thing...
In Encore, OnLocation, and other Suite program the play functionality works just fine....the only one it doesn't is Pr Pro.
    Question:
Is the source code to playback video in Pr different then the other suite programs or am I just making a trivial mistake in Pr?
Sorry for the novice question but I am about to give up and have no where to turn.

  • HELP....AVCHD / MPEG files not playing correctly!

I have been trying to download video that was shot with the new Sony FS100 camera that I'm told are AVCHD or MPEG files to my older Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 timeline, but they are not playing correctly. When I reverse the field dominance, the image plays better but the sound is strange (I was able to speed the sound to 450% and it worked better, but then the balance of the sound from the clip is lost somewhere.).
Any suggestions to make these files play and work correctly? I tried converting them to AVI files but that showed up completely black on the timeline! Anything I've tried either affects the video or audio negatively!  I try either makes the image play or stutterThis was shot in regular SD format, NOT HD, so they should be able to play on  a standard timeline. Can anyone suggest anything to help please? Much appreciated!

Thanks for your reply, I ran it through Media Info. Here are the results:

The project preset for the project should match the properties of the source media in order to direct the program to set up the correct space in the Edit area monitor.
The project preset has obvious and subtle effects on the workflow.
If your source is described specifically as 1440 x 1080 (60i)...remembering that 60i represents 60 fields per second and 29.97/30 interlaced frames per second,
    then you use...
    NTSC
    HDV
    HDV 1080i30
You do not want an alternative.
If you want to the export to come as closely as possible to the properties of the import, then you look in Publish+Share/Computer/ for
    a. comparable format with comparable bitrate and other properties. For example...
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    MPEG
    with preset = MPEG2 1920 x 1080i30
The reason that we are using the 1920 x 1080 16:9 instead of the 1440 x 1080 is to avoid the dependency of the player recognition of a 16:9 flag which
    is required for the 1440 x 1080 to display at 1920 x 1080 16:9.
We want the bitrate of the export to be a high as the bitrate of the import, so we go under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the preset to assure that.
    Left at preset default
    Bitrate
    Minimum 18 Mbps
    Target 25 Mbps
    Maximum Mbps
What is the bitrate for your original that you imported into the project?
Right now, just focus on the above. We can explore
24p Conversion Methods and the like
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE: 24p Conversion Methods, Pulldowns, and Related Interpret Footage
    when and if needed.
Your problem originally stated goes to what happens to good Timeline content that goes bad after application of a video effect.
At this point, it become premature to be discussing export settings.
If we assure that the project settings are set correctly, then we need to focus on the video and effects and define which effects and how many to each clip,
unless you have tried each and every one. A good way to get at this type of matter would be to focus on the video and a specific effect...showing screenshots for video before and after a specific effect has been applied. Are you editing these applied effects under Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Expanded Panel for the effect applied?
    Please review and consider.
    Thanks.

  • Why does my video clip show in the program monitor only when it is playing (the program monitor is blank otherwise)?

I am using WIndows 7 64 bit, and the most recent version of Premiere Pro CC on an I7 machine with 8GB of memory.  I have imported a HD .mov clip and placed it on the timeline.  When I press 'Play', it shows in the Program Monitor window.  When I stop the playing, the window goes blank.  I have rendered the clip (it has a yellow bar above it).  Even after rendering, the yellow bar remains and the sequence only displays when it is playing.  The source monitor has the same behavior.
Not being able to see where I am in a clip is making editing very difficult.  I have used Premiere Elements for five years, I have taken the Lynda.com course, so I have some familiarity with the program that suggests that the frame at the point of the CTI should show in the program and source monitors.
What do I need to do to be able to see the frame in the monitors when it isn't playing?
Update:  I spent 35 minutes with Tushar in a technical support chat (case number: 0186148124), during which time we deleted the contents of the Media cache folder in C:/Users/Your User Account/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Common file (after using task manager to close coresync32.exe and creativecloud32.exe) and renamed both the Adobe folder and the 8.0 folder in Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/8.0.  This didn't get it, but was necessary for the next step:
Going to the File menu, Project Settings, and selecting 'General Settings', Tushar had me change the Renderer to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only (I don't have a GPU accelerator video card yet).  I received a warning that all previews would be deleted, which I accepted.  That brought the image back to the Program Monitor.
I've posted this for anyone who may experience a similar challenge in the future.  Despite a lot of Google searching before I contacted Tech Support, I didn't find anything even close to the description of the problem.  I hope this provides that source for future searchers.
    Jeff

Thanks, Ann.  As I mentioned in my post, Tushar correctly pointed out that, without a GPU accelerated card (which I don't have - mine is a piece of junk which I will be replacing with a compatible one soon) you must use the software only settings.  I had changed my project over to the 'software only' setting, and I still had the problem.  The value Tushar added was the procedure for clearing the cache.
What I did originally was a newbie error, no argument.  I posted it here for others who may fall in the same hole.  Your reply confirms that, without a GPU accelerated card, use the software only settings (sounds so obvious, yet I missed it.....).

  • Image quality of HDTV vs. monitor

How does the image quality compare, of sending the output of a Powermac to an LCD HDTV with a VGA input, vs. getting a regular LCD monitor (with DVI input)?
I can get a 23" or greater HDTV for about the same price as the Apple 20" Cinema display. Unless the image quality would be significantly worse, this would seem to be the better option as I could also watch TV or hook up a video game console as well. I could kill two birds with one stone and get both a better TV and monitor than what I already have, with just one purchase.
Or a related question, if I were to get an adapter to output to S-Video or Component for use on my current SDTV, is the image quality acceptable? I've tried it in the past with my PC and I wasn't too impressed.

How does the image quality compare, of sending the

vs. getting a regular LCD monitor (with DVI input)?
It depends a lot on the HDTV. Some HDTV only display 780 lines which is not much for a modern computer. Other potential problems are overscan (menu bar and dock off the edge) and non-square pixels (distorted images). DVI will give a shaper picture but some HDTV DVI ports do not wok well with computers. Sometimes the manual for the HDTV will give useful information, sometimes you just have to try it and see how it looks.

With SDTV the best you can get is about 640 X 480 interlaced. This is not much, and fine detail will flicker due to the interlace.

  • Mpeg-4 wont play in latest itunes

I converted some dvd files to mpeg-4, and it plays in windows media player, nero, my IPOD, etc, but NOT in Itunes/Quicktime (they both use the same player). In those two, audio comes out, but no video, just a black screen (I tried some trouble shooting from apple, i.e., disabling some directx features, but now only white screen).
Over a year ago I did the same encoding, and it gave me mpeg-4 files that still play in Itunes. In that player, if I click info, it displays "video codec: h.264" for the files that do play normally, and "video codec: mpeg-4" for the bad ones. I have the latest version of itunes/quicktime.
Can someone please help me with the heck is going on here? This is really frustrating...

  • Mp4/Mpeg videos not playing in Robohelp 9 preview

I have RH 9.02 installed on Windows 7 32bit. I'm able to embed captivate files without any problems. However, mp4 and mpeg files that I've inserted  in preview won't play. They play perfectly fine outside of RH. When I try to play the mp4 file, it recognizes it as an audio file rather than a movie but still doesn't produce a sound nor an image.
One time, I got it to start playing but then it just stopped all of a sudden. It shows the quicktime logo so I thought there was a problem with quicktime. I updated quicktime but that still didn't help. I then converted the mp4 file to mpeg and it did recognize it as a movie but it only shows a black screen. Here's the code for mp4 file:

    Hi Judy
Unless I'm horribly mistaken, the MP4 format from Captivate is intended so that you can take the output and push it up to YouTube, Vimeo or other video sharing sites. If your goal is to use Captivate output with RoboHelp, I believe you should stick with using Flash SWF format. You will have much better luck and less hair tearing.
Out of curiosity, why or how did you settle on using this particular output?
If you insist that MP4 must be used, I think you will find you need to also factor in some form of a video player such as FlowPlayer.

  • Mpeg audio not playing back correctly

I just upgraded to CS6 and am doing my first project in it.
I have a Sony HVR-Z1U camera which i recorded HDV to and have captured this into PPro using HDV capture settings
Here is the result of the capture
    File Path: V:\HC2012\Show\Untitled Clip 04.mpeg
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 9.5 GB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00:51:54:21
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
When i try and play back the clip in CS6, the video comes out ok but the audio sounds like a chirp.
If i right clip the clip and say to edit in Audition, it sounds fine
If i play the file back from Explorer in Windows Media play it looks and sounds fine
If i import the same file into CS5.5 it plays both video and audio fine.
What am i doing wrong here?

Try clearing your media cache files and see if that fixes the issue. You can do so by going up top inside premiere and going  to "edit>prefrences>media then click where it says "clean" under media cache datebase. This might fix the problem.

  • Mpeg 1 wont play

I have some encoded MPEG 1 videos that play fine on other macs (powerbook, the other Pro in the office) but on my machine I get the "file is not a movie file" error... somethingseems to be wrong with my QT. I've downloaded 7.5 to no avail; I have Flip4mac and Perian installed as well. Very frustrating and makes no sense.

When you play them on the other macs they play in Quicktime? When you do get info on them do they say Muxed MPEG1 video in the info box?
I have seen this with the wrong file extension on files labeled (suffixed) MPG that were in fact AVI or WMV files. Changing the extension did the trick.
Do they play in VLC (free)? How about MPEG Streamclip (free)?
