MS-6312 -- Questions on Upgrading RAM

I have motherboard version MS-6312,
It came as part of a Gateway package.  They included 128MB of PC133 SDRAM.
I would like to increase the RAM in my system, without changing the motherboard.  I need to know the following:
1)  The maximum capacity is 512MB on this board, right?  I would like to peak it at 512MB or whatever the max is.
2)  There are two slots, will it recognize a single 512MB chip, or must I buy two 256MB chips?  I'm under the impression that it will not recognize a single unit, and I'll need to buy two of them.
3)  Will 64x4 run on this motherboard, or do I need to buy a 32x8 chip?
4)  I'm under the impression that this motherboard only supports up to PC100, despite the inclusion of a PC133 chipset on the base product.  What is the maximum that is actively supported by this motherboard?
Sorry for the trouble, I wasn't able to find this information on any of the websites. Gateway is full of complete morons as well.  They couldn't even tell me if I had pc100 or pc133 installed, let alone come ANYWHERE close to answering these questions.  The answers to a few of those questions, could well be the difference between a 50 dollar purchase, and a 250 dollar purchase.
Note:  I do not have a manual.  I may have lost it, but I'm pretty sure it was just never shipped with the product.
Thanks in advance,
Joseph

I can't find this type of RAM for sale anywhere.
Personally, I hate gateway products.  But it's what my g/f has installed, so I'm left without choice.
Gateway = Worst HD's and MB's possible.  They might promise a nice processor, some RAM, and maybe even a Vid card, but they slink and slime on everything else.
I've been working with her computer about 2 weeks now and notice the HD is , and the Motherboard is .  I can't upgrade anything, because everything is so horrible, and can't help but wonder if this was part of Gateways massive plan to make long term money.  The MB they installed was outdated when they installed it (A 512MB capacity MB, that uses 32Xxxx RAM installed in 2002?  Pathetic!!)
The bastards designed their system to make more money off tech calls that go, "Well, you want more RAM?  First, you need our newest great Motherboard!!!?  It's only 30843243 dollars!!"
The gateway techs couldn't even tell me what the speed of RAM installed was.  I say, "Listen, it must be there somewhere, I just want to know...I assume that it's PC100 or PC133 RAM, which is it?"
Gateway tech replies, "Uh, you have 128MB!!" and acts proud.  Freakin rejects.  I'm certified in A+ and CNNA, can't find a damn job anywhere, but these rejects get paid to know nothing.
They read off a database, with no tech knowledge.  The lady I talked to sounded like she would have difficulty giving me a callback number, let alone the type of RAM I had installed.
Gateway is such a rip.   bastards.  Reminds me once again why I have never bought a pre-made computer.

  • Another question about upgrading RAM on G4 iMac

I know that there are numerous threads on this forum about upgrading RAM and I am sorry to have to open another one but, having read many of them, I am still confused!
I have unopened copies of Leopard and ILife 08 that I am planning to install on my 17-inch 1GHz G4 iMac with 768 MB of RAM (256 MB in the factory slot and 512 MB in the user accessible slot). I know that this model does not support all the functions of these programs but I am currently running Panther and the very first iLife so I think it's time for an upgrade!
Apple states that this model supports up to 1GB RAM so I have been thinking that in order to get the best out of the new software I should upgrade to 1GB RAM. My questions are:
    1. Do I need to upgrade or is the existing RAM of 768 MB likely to be sufficient?
    2. If I upgrade, how easy is it to add RAM to the factory slot? I have searched but can find no instructions on this here or on the Apple website which implies that this is not recommended.
    3. Several threads on this forum seem to suggest that, in order to avoid having to mess with the factory slot, it is possible to put 1GB RAM in the user accessible slot and leave the factory slot well alone, resulting in total RAM greater than the maximum recommended by Apple. Is this correct or have I misunderstood?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Do I need to upgrade or is the existing RAM of 768 MB likely to be sufficient?
That will probably be sufficient. You could always install and run both Leopard and iLife '08 and see if you feel that they are working OK before buying any RAM.
    2. If I upgrade, how easy is it to add RAM to the factory slot? I have searched but can find no instructions on this here or on the Apple website which implies that this is not recommended.
Apple does not post the directions because this is not considered something that a user can do by themselves.
You can see the process at www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/iMacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
    3. That is correct. You could replace the 512 MB in the user accessible slot with 1 GB to provide a total RAM of 1.256 GB.

  • Macbook 2008 - Questions for upgrade / RAM or install Win7

    Hi,
I have a MacBook 4,1 early 2008 edition - 2 GB RAM, 2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I know with the latest upgrade in OS, as Apple mentioned I am not eligible to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I was wondering if -
    1) I can upgrade my RAM to 4 GB? or even higher (not sure if possible)?
    2) Can I get the Video card changed (and hence make me eligible for OSX upgrade) ?
    3) Also I had Windows XP installed on a partition in it. Recently I removed it and now I am planning to put my licensed Win 7 copy on it. But when I try to install it using BootCamp, it shows me error that the 'files cant be moved' to make partition. I was wondering if I can repair my disc wihtout the original Lion CD (As I just upgraded it from Appstore and didn't buy a CD of it)?
    Any expert comments?
    Thanks

You can upgrade your ram, owc (www.macsales.com) has a great reputation.
Sorry, you cannot change the video card.
If you are running Lion, you should have a recovery partition that will allow you to boot into recovery mode. Press and hold the option key as you reboot. If not, you can boot into internet recovery mode, i forgot the key combo for that. From recovery mode you can run disk utility. You can also destroy any partition you'd like. (including the OSX partition and the ability to boot your computer, so be careful.)

  • Question about upgrading iTunes multiple computers with shared library

    Greetings,
I have a question about upgrading to the current version of iTunes.
Currently, my household uses 3 Mac computers (2 Powerbook 17in laptops and a Mack Mini). We are all (currently) on system 10.4.11 (with iTunes 9.2.1). Between the 3 computers we have a shared iTunes music and video library on a networked high capacity hard drive.
We recently purchased an iPad. In order to make it easy for updates and to use media from our iTunes shared library I decided that we should upgrade the systems on our home computers to Snow Leopard. I have ensured that all the computers have at lease 2 Gb of RAM and adequate hard drive space.
The only possible problem I see is that one of the Powerbook laptops uses the old Motorola processor. (This is one of the last Powerbooks to use that processor.) I don’t think this computer can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
My question is, if I upgrade 2 of the computers (and iTunes in the process), will I still be able to access the shared iTunes library using the older computer with the older system and iTunes? Will the upgrade process change the iTunes library in such a way that the one older computer will no longer be able to properly access that library?
Are there any other problems I might encounter having a mixed system/iTunes environment?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    iantoole wrote:
Just a thought. Should I somehow open iTunes on MBP2 using MBP1's Library file??
both Macs can access the same library file, however, only one at a time !
to do that, you would ideally have the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) on the external. then, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes while holding the option key, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
or, you could have two separate libraries and keep those in sync using third party tools such as Syncopation, TuneRanger or SuperSync.
for purchases from the iTunes store, you could set up _*Home Sharing*_ - it can be configured to automatically transfer new purchases to home shared libraries.
Can I create a script to have MBP1 always save the iTunes Library file on the shared hard drive?
    no need.

  • Want to upgrade RAM on HP Pavilion dv6000

    Computer currently has 2GB RAM.
    Runs Vista 32-bit
    Looking upgrading RAM.
    Had a couple of questions:
Is it a matter of adding or replacing?
    Is there a max?
Is it a farily easy DYI porject?
    Thanks,
    Sid

    Hi:
I have attached the link to your service manual. Page 1-2 states you are already at the max with 2 GB.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01035677.pdf
If you know someone who may have a 2 GB PC2 5300 chip, you can remove one of your 1 GB chips and see if it works, and reports 3 GB. If it reports 3 GB, then it would report 4 more than likely.
The chipset supports up to 4 GB of memory, but the BIOS may not allow it, and there are no BIOS release notes that add support for 4 GB of memory, so it would have to be an experiment on your part.
Installing memory is relatively easy. read Chapter 5 of the service manual for how to do it. Specifically chapter 5, starting on Page 5-12. Remember to remove the battery and A/C power before taking anything apart.

  • How to upgrade RAM or add VRAM

Bought a refurbished MacBook Pro with
    OS X 10.8.4
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
and interested in purchasing ProPresenter, which recommends using:
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better
OS: MacOS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or later
RAM: 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)
Graphics Card: Dual display with screen spanning capability (a dedicated graphics card with 512MB VRAM is recommended)
Since my hubby and I just made "the switch," (he got a new iMac 21.5" with superdrive and I got the refurb MacBook Pro), I want to make sure we will be good with the software purchase, or if we need to purchase additional hardware.
    LOVE the new Macs!!

1 - can't answer your hardware question unless you provide information about the exact MBP model and/or what graphics processor (GPU) it has.  To identify the exact model, open Apple > About This Mac > System Information > Hardware and look for "Model identifier"
2 - You can probably upgrade RAM but again it depends on the exact model MBP you have
3 - There is no way to add VRAM in a MacBook Pro
Overall, given the specs you cited for ProPresenter, I would expect it to run fine on an i7 MacBookPro.

  • Upgrading ram and harddrive before turning on macbook for the first time?

Hello, I'm totally new to the world of Macs. I am for sure going to purchase a Macbook, but I feel it might be better to upgrade ram and harddrive through third party. I have never upgraded ram or a harddrive, but it seems easy enough after watching the video at macworld and reading instructions. My question is:
Should I install the ram and harddrive before I turn on the macbook for the first time? Would this make things any easier? Would this be a bad thing to do?
I plan on ordering both the macbook and the ram and harddrive on the same day. Which is basically why I was wondering.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to the discussions!
I agree fully with Ned. You will want to power it up and run the setup and even do your data transfer and maybe even install a program or two before doing any upgrades at all.
    Why?
Updating the OS tests your Airport or ethernet connection.
Migrating data over by FireWire or USB tests those connections.
Installing programs from CD will test out the CD drive.
You will also get a feel for the baseline performance and have something to compare it to once you do those upgrades.

  • X61 upgrading RAM for Win7

Greetings,  pretty straight forward question - on X61 notebook
I want to upgrade RAM from 2 GB to 4GB, my CPU is core 2 due T7300  @ 2GHz
My question is; can my system take advantage of 4GB of RAM or just 3GB max, I know I can put 4GB in but will it be taken advantage by my system, I know some processors cant use more than 3GBs?
I want to upgrade the RAM to run Windows7 64-bit, as I currently have Vista 32bit -Do you think it will make a difference from 32 to 64?
    Thanks a lot,

    Hi,
I have some good news for you. I have an X61and have put the Kingston 4Gb ram module in it, with the existing 2gb module, and under 7 ultimate x64 it recognizes all 6 Gb.
Can't tell you the part number off hand, as it's inside the machine I am using.
It's the generic Kingston 4Gb module, not a thinkpad specific one.

  • Upgrade RAM on my MacBook (mid 2010)

    Hi everyone,
I bought the latest generation MacBook (mid 2010) last year and now I'd like to upgrade my Ram from the defalult 2 GB (2x1GB) to 4GB (2x2GB). My question is: where can I buy my new RAM? The Apple Store is way to expensive....so I decided to buy it somewhere else.
I live in Italy and I've found this website that sells Mac-compatible RAM....what do you think of this (Kit 4 GB (2x2 GB) RAM SODDR3 1067 per MacBook/Pro Unibody)...? Another option would be buying my new RAM on other websites...such as Crucial or Kingston....what do you think? Is there anyone of you who has already done the upgrade and so can suggest me the best solution?
Thank you very much in advance to anyone who would like to help me!

Thank you very much for your reply! Another question: which type of screwdriver do I need? The TORX one?
If there's someone else who wants to add his experience in upgrading RAM, please reply to my post!

  • Brand new Macbook Pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram lagging in the simplest tasks

I received a brand new 13 inch macbook pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram (16 gb) about two weeks ago. I was expecting it to do tasks faster than its predecessors (the macbook pro which came directly before it, which my father owns, and the early 2009 which is now a family computer), but became dissapointed when it began crashing basically as soon as i started using final cut pro, and ever since it has been lagging everywhere else! I have check my activity monitor regulary due to this issue and have noticed "kernel_task" taking a large percentage of CPU (when im not using the computer all that much around 10%) and it uses 1.5gb of ram upwards constantly without fail! I am aware that this is the operating system so i dont really want to fiddle around with it but it does sound a little bit high to me. Originally it was slightly tougher work on final cut that would crash it, hence why i haven't seriously questioned it until now, but currently i cannot even move my curser around without getting the spinning beach ball of death! Please help me!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Upgrading RAM and SSD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009

    Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.
    I thought about RAM:

    Thanks!

" I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did)."
    Check this out:
    http://macintoshhowto.com/repair/back-up-computer.html
Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:
    http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/512GB-M4-and-2009-Macbook-Pro/td-p/7805 6
It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
    I always use OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC
Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it.
