I have problems when sending an email with attachments (generally pdf). I get the error msg stating my smtp server connection has timed out. I can 'sometimes' reboot after saving the email, once restarted I can open the draft and it will go... sometimes not. I test the smtp server by immediately sending a 'test' email without any attachments and it will go right through. Open the saved draft and attempt to resend and it will fail. SMTP settings are correct and have not changed in several years and have not experienced any problems until this latest update to Thunderbird. I can use the same account at Go daddy's web mail application, send the same email with the identical attachment and it works correctly... so I don't think it is the 'attachment' or it's size. I can send 'test' emails to myself or my wife's account and everything works correctly during the session until I attempt to send an email with the attachment and it fails. Immediately send another 'test' email without attachment to the same account and it will go through. I am at a loss as to what to do next to correct this. I am contemplating an uninstall and re-install. No new software has been added to this computer and this problem just recently popped up. I'm stumped...

This sounds like more McAfee funny stuff. But it could be any anti virus really. Disable attachment scanning on outgoing mail and you should be good to go.

My e-mails are not sending. "connection to SMTP server timed out." How do I get this working?

As of yesterday, I am receiving e-mails fine; however, unable to send. Everytime I try to send an e-mail, I get "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server (my mail address) timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.
I received help from lunarpages (they host my domain); however, they were unable to resolve the issue. They suggested something is blocking IP, or need to update Thunderbird, or there's a firewall there...

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". A friend uses Yahoo for his email even though he is a Verizon customer. Frequently when he sends or responds to emails from my Verizon email account, he gets Failure Notices saying that the "Verizon Server is unavailable for too long". How can this be fixed short of saying "stop using Yahoo"?

The Yahoo/Verizon issue happens when Yahoo blocks Verizon's servers or vice-versa, and is usually cleared up within a day or two.
You can report it to Verizon if you want, but odds are they're already aware.

i get a '408' error--server timed out when i try to download from iTunes--this is straight after installing legit rosetta stone software--a windows site mentions this as a possible cause--and the timing points to it--other songs downloaded--but pretty sure it stopped after the software finally got properly installed--any ideas? Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

It sounds like you are unable to send emails, as they go straight to the outbox, but you can get the emails without issue. I recommend using the Connection Doctor to help you troubleshoot what is happening with the following article:

Starting earlier today, this also became my problem - can receive but not send in Entourage. The account settings are correct in Entourage - I even created a new account. My Mac running 10.7.5 won't read the original Office : MAC 2008 disk, so I can't do a fix or reinstall from the disk.
This is not an issue if I log onto the Comcast site.
And so, I started using Mail but, unlike Entourage, Mail won't import my Entourage info.
