MSI 990FXA-GD80 / MSI Radeon ATI HD 7870 Hawk / Phanteks combo.

I am in the process of building a new system but have, potentially, run into some problems.
The motherboard I am looking to buy is the “MSI 990FXA-GD80” and the graphics card is the “MSI Radeon ATI HD 7870 Hawk”, processor FX-8350.
Now to my question/possible problem.
I am looking to buy a third party cooler from Phanteks, the “Phanteks PH-TC14P-RD”.
I know that it will be a tight fit between the cooler and the graphics card normally, and since the Hawk has the “GPU reactor” (which builds the height of the card) my concern is that it would interfer with the Phanteks making it impossible for me to install the video card using the Phanteks.
I was wondering if this combo would work or not, prior to registering here I Googled searched like crazy but came up with nothing.
I would really appreciate some help.

Since that board has two PCI-E slots with 16 lanes you wouldn't have to use the first slot so reactor is not the real issue. The VRM cooler of the board could be more troublesome as the cooler has two towers and two fans.
However I found somone listing a combo with the cooler and a 990FXA-GD65 which should have a vrm cooler of the same height.

My computer suddenly crashed with a BSOD while surfing the web. When it restarted I got past the usual Gigabyte screen - followed by a black screen telling me "Beginning to update backup BIOS ---- Updating " then it restarted again, going into a loop with the same thing happening again and again.
So I figured that the motherboard had crashed, so I bought:
MSI 990FXA-GD80
Thinking that would solve the problem.
I rebuild my computer today with the new motherboard, plugged everything and was ready to go-
The first message I got was telling me that my cpu or my ram was changed, and gave me the option to either 1- enter BIOS or 2- boot with default values.
I entered BIOS, checked that everything was OK, saved and rebooted... Got past the MSI-screen - followed by a black screen telling me "NTLDR is missing, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart", which I did.
My comp then rebooted, but this time both my screens stayed black :O
I have now tried to restart my computer several times, but my screens stay black.
My monitors are plugged in with DVI and HDMI.
Solutions I have tried:
Removing the motherboard battery. and starting without it.
changing to my old graphic card, ATI Radeon 5830.
Removing the power for 15 mins.
Unplugging all the hard drives, except the SSD. (which my OS is installed at).
I have now also ordered AMD FX-8150 8-Core Processor.

Did you use the ame HDD for boot without re-installing the OSD ?
This could be a case of having an AHCI mode OS HDD and your current board is still set to IDE ?
That X4 955 only supports 1066 or 1333 memory.
Borrow the other PSU. Insert only one RAM module.
Do a full CMOS clear.
Retest and do a fresh OS installation and all curent drivers.

MSI 990fxa-gd80 PROBLEMS

Never in my life I have seen a more unstable motherboard....
Here is my configuration (the system is new, assembled yesterday):
Cpu: AMD FX 8350
MB: MSI 990fxa-gd80 (bios verison:13.2)
Memory: Corsair vengeance 8x2GB 1866
SSD: OCZ vector 128 GB
Power: Seasonic 850 Bronze
System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64
I need some help with the following problems if there is someone kind enough to help me:
1. after a minute or 2 bios freezes (I think I managed to solve this by setting the correct speed for ddram; initially it's 1333 and I set it to 1866)
2. Now the windows sees the 16 GB of ram but only uses 8 GB: 16.0 GB (7.95 GB usable); If I set the memory speed to 1333, the windows uses all memory but the computer resets after a few minutes in windows and the bios freezes the same. And after reset it doesn't boot anymore... I have to clear CMOS to make it boot again
3. sometimes after a freeze, I reset and all kinds of artifacts appear on the screen, and the system is not booting
Does someone have any idea about these problems ? Have anybody experienced something like this ?

What happens, when you run the system with only one RAM-module? Check the one module first and the second module later.

MSI 990FXA GD80 audio help

Hello I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before but i was hoping anyone with a MSI 990FXA GD80 could help me out please, i am having audio problems with my new motherboard when play a video or some music if i open msi control centre or scan for hardware changes in device manager i get terrible sound distortion, i think its happening because my bios is being scanned but this is the first motherboard its happened to me on, could anyone else with a MSI 990FXA GD80 play a video or some music and scan for hardware changes in device manger while its playing to see if it happens to you, thank you for any help.
p.s i am using the latest v11.5 bios and on-board audio, my CPU is overclocked to 4GHz but it still happens on default settings, thanks again.

I just tried control center and it still does it, i checked it by scanning for new hardware in device manager because it was quicker to open it doesn't do it there anymore just in control center, so its half fixed

MSI 990FXA-GD80 updated POST code "99"

I started my computer up last night after 3 months of using it and now it is posting a 99 code when I start the computer. I can't get to bios or boot. Keyboards will not work (both PS2 and USB). BIOS was completely up to date for nearly 3 weeks.
This morning, to no avail, I tried a new power supply.
At this point I have tried all of the following:
-Disconnecting HHD (SATA and POWER)
-Disconnecting Opitical Drive (SATA and POWER)
-DISCONNECTING ALL F-PANEL (PWR SW, PWR LED, HDD LED, RESET SW)
-Disconnecting the USB and HD AUDIO
-Disconnecting ALL fans.
-Mounting and remounting the motherboard
-Mounting and remounting the CPU
-Attempting to use a new video card
-Attempting to use a new power supply
-Placing MOBO on a different surface
-Reseting the CMOS via the on board button and removing the battery
-Using only 1 stick of ram to boot
-New PSU
Basically I am booting the PC with the power button on the MOBO and the only things connected are the 8 pin MOBO power, the CPU, 1 stick of ram, and 1 of 2 different working video cards.
After doing all of those things, the MOBO stills post code "99" on the screen and on the MOBO itself. Additionally, keyboard does not work. Furthermore, I cannot access my BIOS or boot screen.
The original video card and the replacement video card both work on another PC therefore they are not the problem.
Thus, at this point, I have narrowed the malfunction down to either the following two components:
-Motherboard
-CPU (which I doubt, but do not have a AM3+ mobo on hand) or another AM3/AM3+ processor
Any suggestions or advice are more than welcome and needed.
I am considering RMAing the motherboard...

Yes. The GPU is working fine I tested it in another computer. I installed another working GPU, it did the same "99" post.
Unfortuneately, there are 2 PC shops close by. 1 of them is a "mom and pop" type place that really doesn't get too deep in to technical aspects and doesn't care much for AMD products. The second is a shop that only carries very low end products as well as some i3 type proccessors and mobos.
Thus, since none of the computer stores give a flip about AMD, I am out of luck in that aspect. I have quite a few AM3 boards laying around, but that does me no good with this Zambezi.
On a side note, I decided to remove the processor. The processor and the heatsink became merged together. What I mean when I say they became merged is that the thermal paste become basically a superglue between the heatsink and the processor (the FX-4170 naturally runs hot, thus, AMD has included an upgraded heatsink in it with better thermal paste). Anyhow, in order to remove the thing I could only get the mounting lever about a little over half way up. Therefore, on the back row, the pins bent a little (I would say there were making somewhere between a 80-85 degree angle orthogonal to the board). I took a credit card and a screw driver and straightend the pins, stuck it back in, still posted the same thing.
Last but not least, I read over the mobo specifications and realized that it was backwards compatible. The MSI 990FXA-GD80 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard supports the following CPU types/sockets:

MSI 990FXA-GD80 (MS-7640) Raid issues

I'm trying to reinstall my windows 7 64 bit on my MSI 990FXA-GD80 (MS-7640) in raid mode. When I'm in the installer and try to add the raid drivers it lists my controller but then BSODs right after loading the driver and yes I used the driver from the MB CD not to mention a number of others. One thing I noticed is that the drivers I found didn't exactly match the option ROM version on my board (3.3.1540.14) closest I found was either .13 or .17. Also when I went into the raid setup and tried to make a JBOD it spit out an error message saying I needed to select two disks to do that operation????? I work with a lot of different raid adapters and I've not seen that one
So any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 BIOS Settings

I recently just put together my first new system. It consists of the MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 board. Lots of reading to find that most of the "other" board owners of different brands, that start wiyh A, and G seem to rant and rave about how good their boards are, and how horrible MSI boards are. Through all of my reading though, there seems to be a whole lot more complaints about how this doesn't work, can't get it to do this, etc,etc, and not nearly as many as those with MSI boards. Thus, why I purchased it, and absolutely love it! I have an AMD 980 BE, Mushkin 1600 Ridgeback 1.5v @ 7-7-7-18-24, Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240 gig SSD, Coolermaster V8 cooler,all in a Coolermaster 922 HAF case. Currently clocked at 4.1gigs, 24hr Prime stable. My question is if anyone knows, or has info on all the settings on voltages in this BIOS so that I can get a better understanding of what they all are and do,and where they should be set. I don't think I did to bad on my very first overclock, but Iwant more, for the bragging rights, you know. Any help would be appreciated.

Since you're a beginner I think you should stick to the defaults with the voltages - you can probably bump up the multiplier safely a little bit without needing to touch the voltages. Unless you plan on doing water cooling or anything like that you really don't need to touch the voltages. Auto works fine. I had my Phenom X4 965 BE OC'd to 3.8Gz just by bumping up the multiplier and it was very stable. You don't want to fry your MB by setting the wrong voltages and its not something you really need to do as the gains aren't really there. (again unless you're doing active phase cooling or something hardcore like that) but thats really reserved for the true geeks like me. Not to mention I really doubt you'll even need to over clock at all unless you reallllllllly want to...
As for graphics cards, I have and LOVE my Evga GTX680... I have the 2GB but theres a 4gb model out now which can handle higher texture fill rates and resolutions... but its expensive $550 or so.... good luck!

MSI 990FXA-GD80, POST error code 54

I have just assembled a new system:
M-Board: MSI 990FXA-GD80 (UEFI BIOS with factory version E7640 AMSB50, indicated by green label on BIOS chip)
CPU: AMD Phneom II X6 1055T
RAM: 2 x Crucial DDR3 1333MHz 8GB REG/ECC
PSU: Fractal Design Newton R2 1000W PSU
GPU: Asus GeForce EN8600GT Silent/HTDP 512MB
I start the sytem and get 3 distinctive beeps from the speaker and error post code 54
I have tried the following:
1. Remove one RAM stick and start the system with just one RAM stick in slot DIMM1. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
2. Removed the RAM sticks completely (in hope to get an error code indicating RAM is missing). Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
3. Switching the RAM sticks (DIMM1 <-> DIMM2). Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
4. Tried the processor on another board (ASUS) that I know works. The processor runs fine on the ASUS board.
5. Activated the "Easy Button 3" Reset button. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
6. Activated the CL_CMOS button at the Back Panel. Result Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
7. Clear Data position of Clear CMOS Jumper JBAT1 (with power disconnected), and the back to Keep data position. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
All fans are working OK. Everything seems to be correctly connected after double checks.
Is there anything else I can do, without returning the MOBO to shop? I guess I can not update the BIOS if I do not get passed the post?
Anything else that can be wrong?
I am greatful for any initiated help.

I am in the final stages of providing my new MSI 990FXA-GD80, Socket-AM3+ with all its peripherals.
I have a working main disk with a Linux/Gentoo installation, connected to SATA baoad connector 1 (the disk shows up as sda1) . Now I have added 4 other disks, all for storage purposes.
The disks connected to SATA board connector 2-4 works OK. However, when I connect the 5th disk to SATA connector number 5 it is not seen by the Linux kernel. It is not seen in connector number 6 either. I have checked that the disk itself and its SATA cable is OK by connecting it to SATA connector number 4 (temporarily disconnecting one of the working disks). And it is recognized there and works OK. So there is no faults in the disk and its cable.
What can be the problem? Is there a different SATA controller for connector 5-6 than for connector 1-4? Do I have to enable a different supporting module in the Linux kernel for SATA connector 5-6, than for connector 1-4?

Problem with msi 990fxa-gd80

Ok after a month of my new setup (8150fx,msi 990fxa-gd80 and kingston hyperx 1866 8gb) i tried to OC some the cpu . After all the settings are done and boot normally at windows i saw the core voltage was at stock 1.28v (using CPU-Z,core temp and amd overdrive) but before at bios i gave it 1,35v. Also i use a multi of x17.5 and fsb 233 but while checking from same programs (CPU-Z, core temp and amd overdrive) the multi goes at 16.5 If i use the amd overdrive i can set the cpu voltage and multi at 1.35 and x17.5 but only from there. Also the system temp at north bridge is a bit high 41 idle is that the correct temp ??? I am using the latest bios 11.10
Plz if anyone knows something about that or had the same problem plz tell me what should i do .

Is amd Cool n'quiet & c1e support disabled?
Also, when overclocking, I don't use amd overdrive (except for the vid card) or control center. Make all your bios changes in the bios.

Some will be interested. But it needs to be made crystal clear that 1600 RAM speed is 'OVERCLOCKING' plain & simple with your particular CPU specifications for the integrated memory controller. Running 1600, that's great! Here's another 'but', the RAM you have is 'rated' 2133, but I guarantee the chips on them are far from 2133. Most likely overvolted 1333's, or 'maybe' 1600's. Have a look at CPUID's CPU-Z SPD Tab & look at the Max. Bandwidth line.
We are all happy that it is working at 1600 for you. The RAM you have may work well for others too. I guess that was the original purpose of this thread? Seems it's done it's job then.

MSI 990FXA GD80 motherboard temp??

i just build amd fx rig, base on amd fx 8350 & MSI 990FXA GD80
the temp of may cpu on stock 4000mhz is 20-30 c in idle but the motherboard it's 40-50 c
it's normal or i should check it at msi service center???
may system is: amd fx 8350, MSI 990FXA GD80, gskill 2x4 ddr3 pc12800, intel ssd 60G & xigmatek 500w

What are you using for cooling Air cooler or water like a h100? And honestly oc genie never worked for me, could be over volting your chip making it run hot. So give us some info on the cooler and maybe your voltages for CPU , CPU-NB , CPU-PLL and any others you wish to divulge. You can use Control Center and pull them off there.
Also Download HWiNFO and use it to monitor temps and voltages. It give max, min, current and average, a very useful tool and number one with FX 8350 OCers.

MSI 990FXA-GD80 THX audio Driver Problems...

Last week I bought MSI 990FXA-GD80 mainboards..
But I found a problem when I'm installing it's THX audio driver..

MSI 990FXA-GD80 voltage control over 1.44V for the CPU FX-8320

Can anybody help me with overclocking with this board? The voltage looks locked
and can't push more than 1.44V.
Any solution/fix?

I know this is a little late but over the last 3yrs I had much time to play with this board.
The board is a beast and its very tricky. most people think this board has a locked cpu voltage
but thats not true. theres a couple ways to access the voltage. the first way is control center.
or if you clear the bios by pushing the clear cmos tab in back then when you restart it hit f1 to enter first time setup
go straight to overclocking features 2nd down on the left side, go right to the vcore and it should show all the way to 2+ volts
i believe. I currently have a msi 990fxa-gd80v2 board with a fx8320 cpu and i overclock it acording to the seasons. as crazy as that sounds. in the winter i can get 4.9ghz stable off it and in the summer i like to run it around 4.5 to 4.6ghz.
the board is very basic and practically overclocks itself. the voltage is way way off though. at 1.62000 voltage the board is actually at around 1.46v to 1.49v no one really know exactly where until you use cpuz on it. i run it at 22x210fsb at 1.58000 to 1.62000v the ram is gskill 1600 ripjaw x . the set the ram voltage at 1.503v at ddr3-1600 in the drop down with a 10xht and 10nb multi and i unlink the timings so the board can autodetect the timings and it does it all basically for me. i have a corsair h100i water cooler and the temps dont go above 46c under full loads, and the chipset runs at 48c no higher. this is by far the best 990 board known to man. i have owned 6 or 7 others from asus, gigabyte, asrock ect. and its wipes the floor with them. i also have a asrock 990fx extreeme 3 board with a 8120 and that board also overclocks well. but not nearly as well as this board matter of fact not even close to the speeds of this board. i will say though.
i had to rma this board twice and now i have to rma it again but a fan header died on it for no reason and the fastboot option keeps giving me a 67 code display on the error and wont even post if i enable it. i wont buy another board because there are none at the quality and overclock ability and stable. i see that person saying the board dont overclock or it wasnt made to. lol.. it was and oh boy it is. just be patient. and dont ever waste your money on intel. youll be paying for the name. ill put my 8320 against any i5 and most i7's running the same hardware. I boot alot of machines and i see them everyday the intels are not anything they claim them to be. in real home use computing the amd is overall faster. I believe i have side by side machines booting at the same time and the amds are faster. booting as far as format and installing windows.
