2*512 crusial BallistiX pc4000
My problem is that the pc will not boot after 235 FSB. I have tried with 2*512 pc2700 memory with same result. I have tried diferent memory timing but it wont help, i have add more voltage to the memory and cpu but it wont work either. Im open for any idea.
I hoped to at least overclock the cpu to 2,6 ghz watercoold

Maybe i need to add more electric power for my memorys. The spec says 2.80 volt on 250 mhz but i start to suspect that this is just an minimum requirment, maybe i need more than 3.0 v to operate the memorys on high performance(beyond 230 fsb), but the thing is that BIOS allows me only too add 2.85v maximum.
Im trying to find a newer version of BIOS version 3.1 if there is any....
Here: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/111
v5.0 Beta 4 allows to give 3.10V to the memory but i don´t think it´s going to help you, you probably have the CBBID issue. -

K8N Sli Platinum sound problems
Hi.
I'll get right to it: the sound is very faint and if i turn the volume up it sounds like it's clipping.
I've had the mobo for about a year now and this problem appeared about two weeks ago, and it is not because of the lack of a -5 V pin, because the psu has one and i also saw the MSI voltage converter near the second PCI-E slot. There are no device conflicts, and it sometimes started to sound ok but i noticed no pattern.
If anybody has an idea, please shout...

Does it happen with headphones too?
yes, it happens with anything plugged in either of all 4 outputs (in 7.1 mode).
The last driver i had installed is: Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit and Sound Blaster Audigy LS driver 1.04.0055 (Aug 05), off the creative site, and it worked fine before.

MSI K8N SLI Platinum IDEs Problem
I have loads of problems with my optical drives.
1st started by the drive not being able to record, so i went to bios and on bios there wasn't even recognized, none secondary ides. rebooted, then no primary and secondary IDEs, after changing mems, and cables, the problem was the same.
this was fixed by making a bios reset. on the next day i was record a cd and got an error something about "fixing session", after this has happen the drive has simply died. it doesn't recognizes blank or recorded stuff, nothing, it's just blind.
the drive is a sony dru530a.
is this a motherboard issue? cause on the old board i never had problems with my drives.
Thanks for helping. The drive has 1 year only and never gave any problems, just with this new board.
the strange thing, is that today it is reading again, what the hell is hapenning here?
How can i filter if this is a MB or drive problem? -
Very, very low sound from MSI K8N SLI Platinum
The sound from my MSI K8N SLI Platinum nForce 4 is so low that i must set the volume control on max and the speakers on max to hear anything. I tried other speakers with the same result. The speakers are amplified.
What can i do?Well for a start you could search the forum as this problem is now well known. I'm not getting at you but I know how frustraing it is wanting someone to respond with an answer, and you don't have to wait if the problem has already been discussed!
The problem is that MSI decided to specify that the 24 pin supply must have -5v to support the creative chip. This is in contradiction to atx 2.2, and other PSU specs for 24pin supplys, which say the pin in question is NC (no connection).
What you need is a dual standard 20/24 pin supply.
Theres is a FAQ about this on the diamond forum, but I'm not sure if unregistered Platinum SLI users can read them anymore!
According to the FAQ MSI are promising US diamond users the chance to RMA their diamond boards when modified boards whcih don't require the -5v supply are availble. This isn't much use to us european Platinum SLI users.
I have a Tagan 480w which is dual standard 20/24 pin supply. -
Any known problems: MSI K8N SLI Platinum + seagate 7200.9 sata2 hdd?
Hi all.
I planning to buy Seagate sataII 7200.9 250GB drive (model: ST3250824AS) very soon (finally they are in stock in my city), but first i want to know is there any incompatibility issues or other problems with such combination - MSI K8N SLI Platinum + seagate 7200.9 series hdd.
I don't have any experience with sata2 drives yet. Currently i'm using seagate 7200.7 120GB IDE hdd.
I don't plan use RAID or use that new 7200.9 drive in combination with current 7200.7 drive (will use current hdd in other pc).
Any tips/experience would be great.Seagate SATA II 7200.9 250GB drive (model: ST3250824AS) has both 3 G/bps speed and NCQ (Native Command Queuing) most all MB’s with the nVidia Chipsets using the nForce4 chip will have problems. If they are not using RAID and you reduce the speed to 1.5 G/bps with a single drive you maybe able to get it to work. Personally, I know the MS-7125 and MS-7220 both will not run RAID with those to motherboards.
I have been battling with MSI and ASUS over this problem sense November and they have not come up with a fix. Problem involved BIOS and RAID Controller Driver for the chipset. Most MSI motherboards latest BIOS have fixed the BIOS half of the problem. There is an unreleased 32-bit driver for Windows, but nothing for Windows XP 64.

Is there a big difference between MSI K8N SLI and MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboa
i am a bit tight on budget, so I was wondering if I should get the MSI K8N SLI motherboard instead of the MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard (my previous choice),.......what do u guys say ?
Hi,
Note that he is not talking about the Neo4 versions, looks like in the US MSI has different products:
Here is the K8N SLI:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=681
And here is the K8N NEO4 SLI:
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4/SLI&class=mb
One has Sound blaster, the other does not.
Besides, K8N SLI Platinum has only one LAN.
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=641
While the Neo4 Platinum has two.
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI&class=mb
A bit confusing right !? Remember that this forum is accessed by people all over the world.
The thing is that the Neo4 and the related non-Neo are using the same BIOS AFAIK.

Dear Friend don't get angry too quickly. I also have a socket 939 Athlon 3000+ Winchester. In start MSI K8N SLI Platinum was not allowing me to OC more than 220FSB in BIOS. Although in Windows I can OC it to 2.16 GHZ with NVidia NTune. It's 240FSB. You are facing the same problem that I was facing. Its 219MHZ Bug for Winchester CPUs.
All you need to do is when you are OC'ing more than 219 MHZ, just set you HT multiplier to 1x and you can go upto 260MHZ FSB via BIOS. When you get to the desktop of windows use any software to set the multiplier back to 4x or 5x (depends on how much you OC). Nvidia Ntune is a good software for this purpose. Plz keep in mind that Winchester cores are not too much overclocking friendly CPUs. They won't go beyond 2.4 GHZ and instability is bound to happen after 2.3 GHZ. -
So, is a -5V pin supply still required for MSI K8N SLI Platinum or not ???
I am looking to buy a new custom made computer. I want the MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard for it. The problem is that the non-USA page claims that it requires the -5V pin supply. I have read many threads on this same topic, but havent found a definitve answer.
Is the -5V rail still needed or not ???
I read somewhere that USA models dont require it, as its not mentioned on the USA site. Well my one will most probably be from Taiwan.....
Is there a check, through which I can confirm whether the motherboard my local hardware store is selling, requires a -5V pin supply or not???
lastly, is that a specific model number, from which onwards, the requirement is no longer needed ????
thanx in advanceI agree with SAB only because mine has been rock solid for quite some time. If I could afford it, I would have purchased SAB's PC Power & Cooling 510 model.
The only other model that seems to have the -5v rail are the OCZ psu. However, I have noticed a lot of users with tagan's and have yet to see someone complain about this psu. Im running the 12v rail as a single rail at 30a...you can experiment with the dual rails and it will adjust to the need of your mobo up to 20a on each rail but then the other rail gets only 10a (at least I think thats how it works).
The tagan 480w u22 was built for the future:
1. has a 20/24 pin main power connector - shielded
2. a 4/8 pin cpu power connector - shielded
3. 2 - 6pin vga connectors - shielded
4. 4 - sata hdd connectors
5. Whisper quiet - you just dont hear it
6. 12v rail at 30a - peak load at startup to 35a for 60 seconds
7. 70% to 73% efficiency rating
Is it enough juice? It seems to me that the manufacturers have realized that pretty soon we will have to purchase $500 psu's just to keep up. So IMO, the manufacturers seem to be getting the point. The new 90nm AMD chips take less power than the 130nm chips...and the new 7800gt video cards take up less power than the 6800gt video cards. In the future, AMD will be coming out with a 65nm chip, which will need even less power.
So I think Im right at the sweet spot with the 12v@30a and its also flexible enough to switch to a dual rail system if I need that feature in the future. Tagan does make a 530w and 580w psu too, but they are not as quiet and you only get 2 more amps on the 12v rail as you go up the line. Just my 2 cents. -
MSI K8N SLI Platinum and 4x512 DDR
Hello everybody,
My problem is with a 2nd kit of 2x512 MB DDR I bought recently. I had a pair of Kingston KHX3200ULK2 512 MB and unfortunately this model was discontinued, so I got another 2x512 MB DDR, this time Geil UltraX which should work @ 5-2-2-2-1T.
When leaving everything on auto, the motherboard sets the 4 modules at DDR333 with the tightest timing. I want to run them in DDR400, so I set them up manually @ 5-2-2-2-2T. In this config, everything is unstable. Sometimes the system doesn't boot, sometimes I get blue screens, etc.
Can somebody help me with some ideas ? The system appears to run stable with timings setup at 6-4-4-2-2T, but I really paid a lot on those modules and I'd like to squeeze the most out of them.
Thanks in advance
System config following (not overclocked)
MSI K8N SLI Platinum
AMD64 4000+ Clawhammer
2x512M DDR Kingston KHX3200ULK2
2x512M Geil UltraX 5-2-2-2-1T (don't have the P/N)

Latest test I did: DDR400 with 5-2-3-2-2T. Ran Prime95 for more than 4 hours and no errors. Still have to check with some games, maybe a 3DMark in loop.
Will come back with updates.
Thanks.
it's nice to be right -

MSI K8N SLI Platinum crashed with my videocard
Hi. I don't speak english very vell, so sorry
A bought an MSI K8N SLI Platinum mainboard, 7800 GTX Videocard and I don't know use it with NON SLI mode If the SLI card there in NON-SLI mode, my pc isn't run. Just black screen, and the D-Bracket is show, that the booting is stopped in memory-control (second LED is red.) If I turn my SLI card for SLI mode, accordingly the PCI-E bus is 8x and my PC is run.
My problem is that, that I don't know run my pc in PCI-E x16
I tried 6 BIOS, but always was this is the problem
Szóval helllllpQuote from: ChakkaSol on 30-October-05, 08:57:50
First, search the internet for a free translater program and cut n paste. Second, you need to place the graphics card in the pcie slot next to the cpu. Third, you need to make sure the SLI switch card is placed "non-sli" with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card. Finally, you need to make sure your SLI switch card is fully in place so the copper teeth dont show (I made that mistake and my rig didnt boot either). Just my 2 cents.
1st -- ok
2nd - the video card is there next to the cpu in 1st PCI-E bus
3rd -- the SLI switch card is placed non-sli with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card.
fin --- well, i have no idea about this, 'couse after i've removed the card, i could not push it back to its place fully anymore, so the copper teeth show up. I also tried to force it with a screwdriver, but it didn't work. but i can turn on the card holder -
