MSI KT6V won't boot, won't go to bios setup, hangs at memory check.

Hey guys.
I made the mistake of buying his motherboard from a mom and pop shop on a Saturday afternoon right before they close (not open today for support :/ ). I've checked the forums for a similar issue and it looks like mine may be unique. Without further delay, here's my problem:
So I decided to upgrade from an intel p4 2.4 HT to an athlon xp 3000+. I got a new CPU chip and the mentioned KT6V motherboard. I brought over my 1 gb of DDR400 ram from the p4 system. I hooked all of my drives (HDD, cd, dvd) and hardware components into the new system. Everything seemed to be looking good. But, then it gets to the memory check screen. It looks like the ram is okay, but it doesn't seem to want to locate the hard drives. I'm not certain on this though. It says that it found the 1 gb of ram with 3 ms (or is it ns? Not sure) latency.
Now, I spoke to an IT guy from my work and he said it is probably be the ram. I borrowed some of his DDR266 CL2.5 ram that he used in his wife's computer. The same thing happened...the system just hung.
Before I go on and give you my complete system specs, here's what the screen looks like when it hangs before it tries to boot. The 'American Megatrends' screen and logo pops up and as I mentioned, the ram info shows up with an 'OK' next to it (which leads me to believe it's not a ram issue, unless the motherboard is lying to me). Below that information, some options pop up for me to hit DEL to go to setup, ESC to skip memory check, and some other options for F10, F11, and F12 (I remember one of the settings was for boot with network). At any rate, none of these options work. If I hit the delete key to go into setup the DEL text is overwritten with 'OK-->' text so it looks like this: 'DEL: Setup' to 'OK-->Setup'. So that tells me that the system hasn't locked up. Now, the system hangs there but if I then try to hit F12 for Network boot, another 'OK-->' shows up next to that option. No matter how long I wait, nothing happens (I let the computer run for 1 hour last night hoping it'd just eventually go into setup with no results).
I've tried disconnecting my SATA HDD, my IDE HDD, my CD/DVD drives with no results. I've tried switching memory sticks, trying only one stick (I had 2x 512mb DDR400 ram and 2x 256mb DDR266 ram) to see if maybe the motherboard just doesn't like 2 sticks of ram. Again, nothing. So, I'm pretty much out of ideas.
Here are my system specifications:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (not sure of FSB, it's not on my receipt...came installed on my mobo)
RAM: 2x 512 mb DDR400 CL3.0 and 2x 256 mb DDR266 CL2.5 (testing purposes)
Videocard: Nvidia geforce 6600 GT 128 mb AGP
HDD1: Seagate Barracuda ST3160023AS 160GB Hard Drive (Serial ATA-150, 7200 RPM, 8MB)
HDD2: Western Digital IDE 100GB
CD drive1: Generic DVD-Rom drive
CD drive2: Generic DVD-RW drive
Let me also note that the guys at the shop made sure to take 30 minutes to update my motherboard's bios and test everything out (with THEIR components, not my old system's guts). So apparently everything works, but the motherboard doesn't seem to like some of my hardware. If anyone can shed some light on this subject, I'd greatly appreciate it! Otherwise I guess I'll just have to wait until next week to get it figured out.

Well, Blazing Storm, I took your advice. Everything is finally setup and working on my new computer now and seems to be working great...BUT, in 3d games, after an hour or two of playing, my computer might randomly lockup and restart. So, I'm assuming it's either my ram being strange or the power supply. My bet's on the 2nd one, especially after what you guys are saying.

Install both Memory sticks and it won't boot, doesn't past post.
Install 1 Memory stick, it boots, works great. It doesn't matter which stick is in the slot closest to the Processor, they both work great.
We have replaced the Motherboard and the Memory. We have upgraded the PSU to a 600W. The only time we have problems is when the Memory is in the slot furthest away from Processor.
We tried this with and without the video card in, same problem.

Followed your instructions to a "T". I now have Bios version E7680IMS.V17.6 I shut the computer down, unplugged without the battery for 2 hours. Cleared the CMOS....STILL HAVING SAME ISSUE!!!! It won't boot and sends me into an infinite loop with both memory modules in both slots.
I am so close to sending the Motherboard, Video Card back for full refund!!! and never buy MSI again!!! This seems to be a recurring theme all over the internet regarding MSI, and yet I can't seem to find a solution.

IMac won't boot, won't start in safe mode

I'm at my wits end. My 17" iMac G4 won't boot. I just get the Apple logo, with the spinning progress wheel. I get the same thing when I try to boot in safe mode -- it just sits there with the progress wheel spinning. (I waited an hour, just to make sure.)
Here's what I've tried:
First, I read various articles on the Apple Web site which, among other things, talk about bad fonts, etc. All of the tips rely on safe mode, so I didn't get too far.
I was able to see the iMac HD from my PowerBook by launching it as a target drive, via "t", using a firewire cable. I used Disk Utility to do a repair on the iMac HD. It did find problems (I don't remember what they were), but when I ran it again it said there were no problems with the HD. I can move files from it to my machine, and browsing it looks normal. I looked for non-standard StartupItems, as recommended, but didn't see anything that isn't on the PowerBook.
I also tried putting my install disk in the iMac as it booted. The DVD went in, but had no effect on startup. (Same symptoms.)
Is there any way I can re-install from my PowerBook -- i.e., can I somehow run setup from the PowerBook on the firewire-connected iMac?
I'm not sure of the exact version of the OS it's got, since I can't boot it to see. (Should I look somewhere on the HD for that information?)
Any ideas or suggestions?

Satellite A105-S2021 Won't Boot - Won't Run POST

I Googled this topic and searched these forums and cannot find a situation quite like this, or a solution to it.
First, the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S2021 running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit with 2.5 GB SDRAM.
While my wife was working on her laptop this afternoon, the display went all crazy and would not clear up. The picture was pixelated, and distorted, all diagonal and wierd.
When I rebooted the laptop, the cooling fan came on, the optical drive looked for a disc, the laptop tried to boot, and after about 3 seconds it shut down and went into a loop like this. It would try six times to boot, each time failing, then it would completely shutdown. It won't launch the POST to see if there are any beep codes that might indicate what the problem is. Pressing F2, F8 or F12 is useless since it can't boot to a point where that would be useful.
I'm A+ certified, so I tried all the normal stuff. I tried multiple variations of disconnecting the AC adapter or battery and holding the power button for 20-30 seconds. I removed and reseated the RAM. I took one SoDIMM out while trying to reboot with only 1 in place at a time. I opened the case and visually inspected everything and made sure all the connections were tight. I pulled the HDD and connected it to my laptop as an external and I could read the drive fine that way. On advice from 1 forum post, I checked to see if I could pop out the CMOS battery to reset the CMOS, but the battery seems to be hard-mounted to the MB.
Nothing I try seems to work. Does anyone have any useful advice? Thanks.

Tim, not quite sure why Ed is talking about the Sat A105-101, as your model is the Sat A105-S2021.
Regardless, here's the downloads, specs, user guide, etc, page for your model:

While I doubt you'll be able to use it, here's the latest flash BIOS for your unit, even if you have already installed this, you should at least try to reinstall it:
ACPI Flash BIOS version 2.30 for Satellite A105
Make the bootable CD on another computer, to try to install this BIOS on yours by booting off the CD drive with the disk you create. You say it's seeking a CD/DVD on power up, so it might boot. It's certainly worth a try.
But, bottom line, if you can't 'F2' into the BIOS Setup, I'm doubting you'll be to boot off the CD, and in all likelihood your BIOS is toast.

IMac Won't Boot - Won't Repair - Even after Erase and Install

One day my iMac acts weird. Apps bounce but don't open. I restart. I get greyscreen and spinning gear for 1.5 hours. Uh-oh.
Disk Utility run from OS X disk: cannot repair - "Invalid Node Structure" and "Invalid Key Length" - multiple instances.
So I erase volume and install. All goes fine. Install Tiger. Use upgrade to Leopard disk. Leopard boots and apps work (I try Safari and web connects) so I do software update thinking it's fixed.
Huge software update to 10.5.7 plus sundry others. After update reports "Could not install updates" - then it lists a load of updates (keynote, iwork etc) that it cant install.
Say's it'll restart. You guessed it: grey screen and spinning gear for 1.5 hours. Won't boot after forced restart either.
Run disk utility from OS X disk again: same errors, "node"; "key length" etc.
What now? Is 10.5.7 the problem? I have apple care so no major sweat but I need to get this thing operating baby.
PS - my boot camp partition that I have had for months and months still boots. So the HD isn't totally dead. At least can rule that out.

Suggest you do the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives.
4. Select the OS X volume (sub-entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
See if this fixes the problem. If it doesn't then there is some corruption in the directory block that reformatting or zeroing is just not able to fix. In such a case the resolution would be to repartition the drive from scratch. However, this will result in the loss of the Boot Camp partition as well.
Unless your Leopard disc is an upgrade-only disc, then you can install Leopard directly - no need to install Tiger first.

Won't boot, won't install

The other day, my MacBook (which will be a year old on Dec. 17) wouldn't bootup. It stayed on gray screen with the progress indicator twirling. It finally booted up after three tries. Then I saw a log that it had performed a system check and passed, and I figured that was what it was doing and why it took so long to finally boot. Today the same thing happened. It wouldn't boot up in safe mode either. So I tried booting it from the install disc. That failed after about 10 minutes of going through install. I'm trying to do that again, and not sure if it will fail again. Does this mean I'm going to lose all my hard-drive files? Any idea of what else I can do? I've got an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow. Today is Black Friday, and of course the store is crazy today, so can't go there today. I've got Snow Leopard OS.

Thank you so much for your reply. I tried the reinstall again (before I got your reply), and this time it worked. I think it worked because instead of sitting there horrified and staring at the screen, I went and took a shower and played with my dog who was picking up on my anxiety. Perhaps computers pick up on anxiety too (I make ze joke).
My main concern was losing all my files from the last 20 years (had a PC before I got the MAC last year, and didn't see the need to save my PC backups after my files were transferred to MAC -- now I see the error of that), as I have been stupid and not set up Time Machine in this whole year. That would have been truly truly terrible. So now that it's booted up, I've set up Time Machine and am doing a file backup first. Then will meet with the Genius Bar person tomorrow and see what else needs to be done.

Ibook won't boot, won't recognise hard drive, PRAM reset etc. Help?

Hi, I'm trying to repair my brother's iBook with limited knowledge. I'm not sure whether it's a G3 or G4 but it was made in 2001, has 2 usb's and a firewire, is white (slightly translucent) and has a 12" screen.
It started having problems starting up so he copied all his important files, just in time as now it won't work at all.
It starts up but just comes up with the ?/folder icon flashing. The hard drive starts "ticking" like an old clock as soon as the power button is pressed, as if it's stuck.
I've tried starting from the 10.3 install CD, this works at first but can't see a hard drive for installation, the same goes for disk utility from the install disk, there's no disk shown to repair.
I've reset the PRAM, PMU and pressed command, ctrl, alt(or shift?) and the power button.
I've started in "safe" mode but it won't get past the grey screen with apple icon.
I've started with alt pressed, this showed an OSX hard drive startup disk ok but would not boot it, it showed the grey screen again with the Apple logo, on one occasion this changed to a "No Entry" sign, a circle with a line through, weird. It has OS9 on here too but that didn't show at all.
After I drove it from his house (100 miles of vibrations) it started up straight away but froze (again with the ticking sound) after about 10 mins when accessing a file. When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM. Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
On one occasion I held the eject key down at startup after having problems getting it out, the screen showed lots of numbers and something saying "panic: we are hanging here" very weird!
I've pressed down on the case on the left below the keyboard.
The battery seems to hold plenty of charge.
Sorry this is so long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. I've tried everything I can think of & have read about without spending cash or taking it apart. I think the HD may have had it. Any ideas?

No need to apologize for the length. That helps a lot. You can tell the model, speed and size by lifting the keyboard (two tabs outboard of the F1 and F11 keys, make sure it's unlocked - that tiny sloted head between F5 and F6)
There'll be a bar coded sticker there.
However I think it's a 500-900 G3.

That's classic for a bad hard drive.
When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM.
That happens when the battery is out with no power plug for longer than a few minutes.
Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
No there is no PRAM battery in an iBook. There is a super cap that allows a short time so you can change the battery.

Yes that's a kernel panic.
So it boots from the CD but needs a new hard drive.

Laptop won't boot, can't get into BIOS.

I have a Satellite P55t-A5116, with windows 8.1. The other day I went into the Toshiba password utility and set a user password, and when the machine reboots, nothing happens. No sign in screen, no place to enter the password, nothing. I cannot get into the BIOS, having tried holding down the ESC, F2, F8, and F12 keys. I also tried holding down the Fn key plus the F2, F8, and F12 keys. I have tried to boot with my Toshiba System recovery disc ( that might be a windows 8 disc, I made it when I got the laptop in March), or an Unbuntu disc. Below is a screenshot of what I get when the machine starts. Did the BIOS get corrupted when I entered the password? If I pop out the CMOS battery, will that fix it? Any help and suggestions is much appreciated.

[SOLVED] X58 Pro-E won't boot to Windows 7 after BIOS flash

I was running BIOS version 8.7 and I noticed today that version 8.8 was available. Everything was running fine without problems but I bit the bullet and decided to update. I used the M-Flash utility in the BIOS (which now that I am in the forum I see that it apparently kills boards... I wonder why this is not posted on the download site!)
The M-Flash did not kill my board, it POSTs just fine. After flashing I set the board to RAID mode because I am running 2 500 gig WD hard drives in RAID 0. This volume contains my Win7 install. The intel controller sees my RAID drives and they are still part of "Volume0". The boot order is set to boot to "RAID: Intel Volume0". Everything else is disabled in the boot sequence. When the board tries to boot, I just get a flashing cursor... no boot.
I reset the boot sequence to boot to my Windows 7 disc and attempted to repair the bootloader using the repair option on the disc. It said that windows found an error and it attempted to recover the install. Keep in mind that I didnt have any problems before I flashed. Still no joy. Just a flashing cursor. I booted to the Windows 7 repair again but it didn't report any problems so I told it to repair again. Still no joy. Just a flashing cursor.
Any ideas?
Update: Reverted back to 8.7 using the MSIHQ flashing utility. Cleared the CMOS. Set everything back, and made sure that RAID was enabled. Everything is detected fine. Volume0 is set to boot first. No joy. Just a flashing cursor.
Update2: Booted the Windows 7 disc again, went to the command prompt and typed bootsect /nt60 c: /mbr and this fixed it!!!

Your solution would likely work if you upgrade to 8.8 as well.

N500 won't boot windows xp after flashing BIOS

Hi, I purchased an N500 a couple weeks ago, it's been running fine on xp, except occassionally I'd get disconnected from the internet (a line problem, not the computer, happens here in egypt) but the wireless would not automatically reconnect to my line once the line was back up. The log file for the wireless card said something like "unable to set proper band" when this happened. Anyway my driver version was the latest version, so I thought maybe I needed to update bios. So I flashed bios using the flashbios utility that is listed on the lenovo website in the download section dedicated to my laptop model. The laptop then restarted itself, and then I got the black screen that says "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start correctly...." blah blah blah.with options to start up in safe mode, last known configuration that worked etc. However when I choose ANY of these options about 3 seconds later I get the blue screen of death, and the computer restarts! So how do I get myself out of this mess! Thanks Lenovo for that great Flash utility by the way!!

Try reinstall the OS. I hope it works. My opinion is when you update BIOS, The OS detected as a new computer (for some pcs). Try repair The OS with boot from CD.

Hold down the power button, then tap it to start it and hold the c or option key down to boot off the OS X install disk.
You may need to let it charge for awhile, then do a SMC Reset.

If you can't boot off the disk and you need it out of the disk and need it out of the machine, hold down the trackpad button while booting and it should spit out.

Won't boot, won't install a clean OS

Someone handed off an early 2008 15" MB Pro to me. Previous owner started having boot issues and needed a new one right away. The battery is fully charged, it chimes when powered, but when I try to do a clean install from a thumb drive the wheel spins forever. I don't let it spin for too long as the back part of the bottom heats up quickly and substantially.
Apple Store is stumped as they tried to install an OS using network, firewire, and usb. Same spinning wheel. They suggested to the previous owner to change the drive so he swapped it for a functioning windows drive. Ironically when you simply press power it tries to boot into Windows! I have read a little about the NVIDIA problems with this series, but I don't know if this fits that issue since the display is clear. Suggestions to get it working, or should I sell it for parts?

Step 1: Hold down "COMMAND + S" at Boot
A black screen will appair with a bunch of code, Once this stops.. Preform step 2.
Step 2: Type /sbin/mount -uw /
Use spaces where needed /sbin/mount(space)-uw(space)/
After you run that command wait a little.. about 10 seconds for everything to go through.
Step 3: Type chmod 775 /
Use spaces where needed chmod(space)775(space)/
After you run that command wait a little.. about 20 seconds for everything to go through. a bunch of codes will drop down until hard drive is repaired.
Step 4: Type exit
Your computer will now reboot by itself and bring you past the apple logo. Cheers!

17" C2D 2 gHz iMac w/fresh install of Tiger won't boot to desktop; takes me through setup, then instead of normal boot, it re-enters setup. (I don't have install disks)

Hi, I just bought an iMac from E-Bay, a pre-aluminum, 17" C2D 2.0 gHz machine. The seller told me that he wiped the hard drive and installed Tiger, with a borrowed disk, so I don't have install disks.
I booted up the computer and it took me through the initial setup process. Everything seemed slow, it took a couple of minutes to get to the setup intro screen. After going through setup, it looked like it was going to go for a normal boot, but it re-entered setup. I went through the process 3 times, and it wouldn't let me choose the same user name twice, so it seems to have created 3 user accounts. But I can't get it to boot to a normal Finder desktop. Safe mode is no-go. I reset the pram, no change. I plan on trying to boot using Linux Mint on an external USB, to see if the hardware is functioning.
