According to this:
http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1141&maincat_no=1&orderby=cpu_name%20ASC#menu
"Yorkfield" 45nm quadcores are not going to work on this board, only "wolfdale" 45nm dualcores and even that depends on revision, like Jack mentioned.
So your Q8200 is a no go unfortunatly.
Only the older 65nm "Conroe" quads will work.
and fastest intel processor (not 45nm quad core) ?

  • MSI P6N-SLI with Intel E7300

I have a P6N-SLI board that I've been using for awhile with an Intel E6420 Conroe core processor.  I upgraded the BIOS to the new Version 2.6 yesterday and tried to install a new Intel E7300 Wolfdale core processor.  The system will not POST, indicating no beeps and no video.  The FANS are on Highspeed.
Any advice in getting this system working?  I've been running the E6420 for over a year.
I put the E6420 back in and the system booted without issue.
The MSI website indicates that the E7300 is compatible with the P6N-SLI board so it should work.
    Again, any advice?
    Thank You,
    Michael

    Henry,
All add-on cards have been checked.  I can put the Intel E6420 processor back in the system and it will boot as normal.  If I put the Intel E7300 processor in the system, it will not post.

  • X60 and Intel quad core?

    hi, everyone!
i would like to know if it is possible to change my standard processor to a faster one. my specs is standard to x60 1706 8kh. can i change the processor Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz to IntelQuad Core 2.66 GHz? if not, what is the fastest processor i can use?
    thanks.

Before manufacturer goes out and design a product, he lists the priority that they want in the product. In the X series that would be weight, portability, battery life, etc. So obviously, when size is at stake and you have to lose weight, you would try to save weight in everything you can. I guess Lenovo could have included a socket and normal CPU, but that would add weight but more importantly thickness to the laptop. Competition is tough, and critics are out there to pick out any weaknesses against the competitor, and in ultraportable market, that would be weight and size.
While, outright speed is not the main goal of portable laptops like that of X series, as most people whom use it are road warriors, where most of their applications are not overtly CPU and GPU intense like they would on something like T61p. Most of these people probably just read a couple of documents and surf the web...
So this is a good case of getting the priority right for the Manufacturer to target the major market for the product.

  • MSI P6N SLI board, trouble again

Well bought a new Adaptec 31205 raid card and a few Sas drives.
Strange enough the card is NOT seen by the board. Furthermore i cannot alter the bios of the board, nor the card gets detected.
Drives spindle, card is powered on, cursor stays at the left side of the screen.
Any suggestions for this problem are more then welcome.
Had to reinstall the Dell Scsi card and drives.
    thanks,

  • P6N SLI Planitinum & Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield

I just bought my new Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield cpu and after installing it, my PC would not boot. I oput my old cpu (Intel Core 2 Duo) and it booted fine.
After some search I found out that P6N doesn't support Q9550 Yorkfield (unfortunately).
Is there a way to make my new cpu work or is my only way is to buy a new mobo (keeping my new cpu)?
    My PC specs:
    - Windows Vista 32-bit SP1
    - GeForce GTX 260 896MB
    - Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz (new: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield)
    - 8GB RAM total (even though only 6GB is showing)
    - MSI P6N SLI Platinum
    - Antec 900 case

    Quote
then I guess I'll buy a new mobo (and I make sure it's not MSI).
Well, then you need to make sure that your new mainboard does not come with an NVIDIA 650i Chipset which is  used on the P6N SLI Platinum.  This chipset does not suppport 45nm Quad Core Processor, no matter what manufacturer.  Here is the CPU Support List for an Asus P5N-E SLI for comparison, which uses the same Chipset as the P6N SLI Platinum:
    http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5N-E%20SLI&product=1
Do you see any Q9xx0 Processors in the list?  Exactly, they are not supported, because the chipset is not up to the task.
    Quote
    This is really messed up.
Sorry to say, but when you are building your own system, it is your responsability to make sure the parts you want to use are supported.  It is not like the CPU Support Lists are a secret.  Like Daloona said:

  • P6N SLI with intel core 2 duo e7500 does not post

Heres my set up MSI P6N Sli 4 gigs Corsair 800mhz gaming ram intel sl9kn 3.0.6 ghz single core cpu Silver Stone Strider series 700watt psu 2 harddrives 1 250gig ide 1 320 gig sata. A EVGA G4orce 9600Gt 512mb video card. I recently bought a intel core 2 duo e7500. When the e7500 is installed fans spin up but no video. When The sl9kn is installed everything functions normally. I had the e7500 tested and it posts fine in other motherboards but not in my p6n sli. Everything functions normal with the sl9kn. I know this because im using the system to write this post =). I cleared the cmos per the manual and updated the bios as well but still no changes with the e7500(intel) cpu. The e7500 is in the compatability list on the msi site. I am all but convinced this is a compatability issue with something else i have installed. The only thing that was changed was the cpu to the e7500 and nothing else was touched. Since the system functions normally with my old cpu (sl9kn) i have put it back in for now. Any help or ideas on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

If im correct you referring to possibly replacing the socket so the cpu fits the board and the pin count is the same. If so this has already been checked and the cpu fits the board pins and all. Considering the board is only a few months old and the cpu and the board both are socket lga775 the only real difference is the one being used is 65nm and the e7500 is 45nm. The board was designed with core 2 duos in mind wich nearly all of them are 45nm. The board also supports quad cores wich are 45nm. The only other thing I have noticed is my ram is not on the list of modules tested to be ok on the board. The techs where I bought the board were baffled as to why it wont post but if the revision number will help the board version is 1.0 The only other thing left to do is swap ram. As before though everything functions until the cpu is changed. MSI and Intel both have told me the board supports the e7500 even version 1.0
No im not referring to the pins, I know its LGA775.
Im referring to a parts update, extra chip, to make sure 45nm dualcores work.
45nm Quads are not going to work, nor will they ever on this board.
    Read here for cpu compatibiltylist:
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1141&maincat_no=1
The only possibility is to send it in, since your board has revision 1.0
    Read here also:

I have the somewhat more expensive version of your board, the P6N SLi Platinum and have the same issue and since the chipset is identical, you also have to upgrade.
This is all due to chipset limitations and thus an NVidia issue, since they provided the chipset, (this said before going to bash/complain/rant about MSI  ).
    Edit:
    This board was made/designed pre 45nm cpu's and made/designed for 65nm cpu's.
Now they are mostly 45nm, when the board was made, 65nm was common and 45nm was still under development.
That you bought the board new, a couple of months ago, doesnt say anything about its production date or about its support for cpu's, it could have been on the shelf for a long time.

It seems that your CPU (or PSU) died.

No, that won't work as that requires a UEFI bios and GPT format which is both not possible with your old board just supporting classic bios. You won't be able to access the entire drive space which makes a (costly) 3TB HDD quite useless.
Better just get nothing above a 2TB HDD.
    Connection won't change that.

Now, I hooked everything up, turned the power supply power on, and a beautiful LED light on the motherboard started to shine proudly.  Basking in the glow of my orange LED, I confidently pushed the power button on the case, to find... nothing.  No fans started, no whirring of the HD, just silence.  I double and triple checked the cord going from the motherboard to the power switch, turned it around, begged it, but can't get any response from the motherboard.  I was looking into if my power supply was compatable with my motherboard, and it seems like it should be.  Does anyone have any ideas of what else I can check?

    Quote from: tnt1 on 22-March-07, 10:34:43
Two different specs. The motherboard is designed to handle either the 8 pin or 4 pin cpu connector. Did you hook up the 4 pin? Did you use the 20+4 for the main ATX? Is the power supply set to 115v? (may say 110v or 120v)
Also are you certain you have connected the power switch correctly to the motherboard. (You can try jumping the pins with a screwdriver). Recheck the manual and make sure you are using the correct pins. Also disconnect the reset switch just to make sure it is not stuck in a reset state.
Try with motherboard out of the case. (It may be grounded)
    Try with minimal components.
    Reseat the CPU.
Well, I tried all of these.  I re-seated the processor, which looked fine originally, stripped out everything except the processor, RAM, and video card, re-connected all of the power cords, took the motherboard out of the case, and jumped the pins with a trusty pair of scissors.
Success!  It booted right up, the fans started, and there was a large sigh of relief.
I have no idea what it was wrong, but it seems ok now.  Of course, I haven't even connected a monitor or anything, so there's a long way to go, but this was a rather important first step, don't you think?
    Thanks guys

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum + E6850 + 533Mhz (PC-4200) RAM?

    Hi,
I got hold of an E6850 (1333 MHz FSB) CPU for upgrade and I would like to know if it can run with 2Gb hynix RAM (533MHz PC-4200) on my MSI P6N SLI platinum (Rev 1.0). If it will run, how much performance loss would there be compared to using 667MHz or 800MHz RAM?
    Thanks.

I am not sure if the Nforce Chipset/Memory Controller is able to support a memory bus speed that is lower than FSB Clock Speed. Intel Chipset usually can't do that (1:1 usually being the minimum ratio supported).  However, on your board, the memory speed is not directly tied to the FSB Clock Speed and can be adjusted independently, so the situation may be different.  The bottom line is:  I can't tell you for sure if it will work or not and therefore suggest to simply test it and see what happens.

If it will run, how much performance loss would there be compared to buying PC-6400 800MHz RAM?
With the memory bus running slower than the Front Side Bus, there will be definately be a performance difference that is not insignificant.
