Multiclip editing with 'broken' clips

I've got three DIFFERENT takes of a group singing a song.
I want to use the sound from one take - making that take the master.
The other two takes wander in and out of time.  I'd like to chop them up to make sections fit, then fill the non-fitting spaces with blank slugs.  And then I'd like to be able to work on the song as a multiclip.
So the timecode will not be contiguous on two of the tracks.  Clip, blank, clip, blank.
Mmmm.  So, as far as I can tell, I'd have to export out those two tracks, re-import them as new media, THEN make a multi-clip.
Or can someone suggest a way I can work with the two tracks that will have a dozen clips (and blanks filled with slugs) each on them ... without having to create another generation of the media?
All ears,
Ben

Hey Ben
It's XDCAM EX (from a Sony EX3).  Mmm. GOP.  Maybe I could export it as ProRes 4:2:2 HQ, I wonder if that would make a difference?  Are you suggesting there is generational loss from XDCAM?
Any time you recompress when working with a compressed codec then there is necessarily a generational loss ... though how bad it is will depends on how lossy the codec. When you Export > Quicktime Movie from FCP, if the clip isn't otherwise processed, then you're just copying the bits from the original files, frame for frame, not necessarily recompressing ... but where the codec has a GOP format (like XDCAM) then any edits at all to the original file can compromise that GOP structure, which means no matter which way you cut it the whole GOP structure has to be rebuilt (re-conformed), which effectively means that you get a recompression. Exporting as ProRes 422 is still a recompression, but it's a very good quality I-frame codec so at least you'd end up with a clip thats in a more edit friendly format (and whats widely considered to be a "visually lossless" one.
I've been able to sync up the three takes ... the tempo is different in each, very slight, so every now and then I lose a second (or less than) as I re-sync.  Fill the spaces with slugs.  But they are all sitting on the timeline, stacked on their own tracks.
One of them is the master take chosen by the client.  The other two are with the breaks (to adjust sync).  I will make a ProRes 4:2:2 HQ of each.  And then I should be able to sync all three as multiclips, right?
Once you've got your clips all synced up on the timeline then you're going to want to export each track as a separate clip. Unfortunately, unlike some other NLE's, FCP does not currently allow you to create multiclips from an existing stack of clips that are pre synced in the timeline. Instead, as noted, you'll have to export each of the 3 tracks as separate clips and then reimport those clips, select them, and choose Modify menu > Make Multiclip... it'll ask you how you want to sync them,  if you've made them as above then you should be able to gang them together according to their In Points.
Hope it helps
Andy

  • No three point edit with merged clips in Premiere Pro CC 7.2?

    Hello Premiere Folk,
            I've recently, as of last night, updated to Premiere Pro CC 7.2.  I'm currently cutting a feature using merged 5K red raw clips.  We were expereicning some weird things but were able to work around them.  The update fixed to major problems we were having;
    1. Bloating projects going from 808kb to 5mb for no reason.
    2. Not being able to perform a match frame on merged clips.
The update fixed these issues, but don't throw on your party hats just yet.  Within this update a fuction CRUCIAL to any editor has been taken away after you've performed a merged clip function... THE EDIT!  Any time I make an in and out point in my source with a merged clip and an in and out in my timeline and try to do an insert edit via a hotkey, it just edits the entire clip in the timeline starting with a radnom in point!  I was able to set an in and out in my source and just edit into the timeline but even that function has been taken away.  Adobe please fix this!  Yes the match frame with a merged clip works but dont take away editing basics!

This bug is NOT FULLY FIXED.  I'm on a tight deadline so i'm not looking very hard online to see if i'm alone - so please forgive me for just posting here...
I'm using CC7.2.1 it's 1/21... very grateful that match frame FINALLY works on merged clips, but, again, this insert/overwrite bug is only PARTIALLY FIXED.
Insert/overwrite with merged clips on 3-point edit now works, but ONLY when cutting in BOTH merged video+audio... if you're just trying to cut in the audio from a merged clip using a 3-point/4-point edit via hotkey, it's a no-go.
I, for example, needed to re-cut in audio under some video with effects on it. So, I unpatched the video source completely and patched source audio tracks 1-4 to the appropriate sequence tracks. Upon hitting insert or overwrite multiple times, nothing responds. The only way to cut anything in from the source (merged clip) was to patch the source video back into the timeline on an unused video track, then cut ALL the tracks from the source in, I then had to delete the video track re-link the now free audio to the original video. Not a big deal, but annoying enough & waste of precious time on tight deadline.
So, yeah, I have a workaround but is still not appropriate to have a core function not work properly. Especially when I'm working with a very complicated timeline.
That said, thanks for keeping on top of our gripes, Mark.

  • Subclip timecode issues for MultiClip edit...Help!?!?

Here is the issue. 2 camera shoot, Cameraman 1 pushed pause during a live concert video shoot.
In order to make a multiclip edit with the other camera's footage, I have made subclips of this camera's footage on each side of the pause.
The other camera in the shoot had issues as well so I have been forced to use a sequence and alternant timecodes to line everything up with my sound file.
Everything works well until I get to the subclip after the pause. I try to modify the alternant timecode to correspond with the sequence timecode but when I enter the approporate number FCP forces a different number to appear.
My hunch is that because these are subclips of the same captured clip I am not able to modify the timecode as I want to. Can anyone confirm this hunch?
And...what can I do about this? Do I have to recapture? I hope not. I have tried to create a new master clip in the modify window but the problem persists. I am so close to getting this into the multicam editor I can taste it. Thanks.

Solved it... I ended up having to re-capture the shot after the pause so it would be a seperate media file. I guess I could have copied the file outside of FCP, renamed and imported the file seperatly... I realize this problem was caused by not setting the capture up properly to treat the jump in time code appropriately.

  • HOW CAN I DO MULTI CAM EDITING, OR MULTI CLIP EDITING

I want to know how i could do mulit cam editing or multiclip editing with final cut express.

Here's how I did it a few times:
    1. Add video tracks (and audio tracks if needed) to your timeline to equal the number of cameras you have. Of course if you have more than 4 this will start to get impractical.
    2. Edit in your clips from your different camera angles, one to each video track.
    3. Double click each clip in turn to get it into the viewer and click the Motion tab. Change its scale to 50%.
    4. Select each clip in turn in the timeline and move it to one corner of the canvas. You need to have "image + wireframe" selected in the Canvas popup menu in order to move it with the mouse.
You should now have up to 4 different camera angles shown at the same time in the Canvas, each in its own quadrant.
    5. Now the hard part is to align each clip according to time. Hopefully you have some sort of visual cue you can use to align the clips.
    6. Then play through the timeline and use the razor tool to cut the clips where you want a camera angle change.
    7. Select each camera angle piece you want from each cut you made and change its scale back to 100% and center it at 0,0. Delete the unused clips.
    8. If you want, you can move all the clips that remain back to v1 so that you can use transitions between them.
What to do with all the various audio is another question. I usually use the audio from the best source all the way through, only changing to the other camera angle's audio when necessary.

  • Multiclip Edits Problematic with EDL's (Edit Decision Lists)

Gentlemen, I exported a sample EDL for my on line bay from a multiclip edit from three angles (P2 Card Files) I created and they are seeing the list as one Reel Name instead of the three reel names if I cut it traditionally.
I understand a multiclip is creating a new single clip in my bin of the three source clips, and that it is creating its own new name. But is there not a way for the EDL to be created and exported so that the edit list reflects the original file source names, not the single multiclip name?
I also tried collapsing the multiclip but got the same EDL result.
    Thanks for your input.

Might try performing a match frame/replace routine in your sequence after collapsing the multiclips? i.e, replace the clips in the sequence with the original master clips... This would go pretty fast I'd think. Just place the playhead anywhere within a clip, type f, and then simply use the replace edit on each one.
Try it with a duplicate of the original sequence...

  • Clips randomly jumping within a multiclip edit

I'm going nuts! I completed an edit from a 2 camera event using the multiclip function with in-points as my beginning reference. I rendered the whole timeline with all transitions and filters - took a break - came back to create an opening and discovered that randomly throughout the entire sequence clips are now shifted out of order. Portions of scenes just appear in the middle of other scenes - WHAT THE HECK I'M I DOING WRONG?
Thank you so kindly for any help
    TABeav

Always collapse once your cut is done. Otherwise, any filters you add are being added to each angle in the multiclip, which increases render times as many times as you have angles.
You can always go back and uncollapse a particular clip to change the shot if desired.

  • MultiClip editing/ Down convert to multi-edit but then replace clip?

I need to multiclip edit a 2 camera interview using one ex-3 and one sony hdv cam.
When I select the two clips to make them a multiclip sequence, it says that I cannot because of the frame size not matching.
    Two part question.
    1) Is there a way to create a create and edit a multiclip with two different frame sizes?
    2) I had an idea of downconverting the ex3 footage so that FCP allows me to create a multiclip.
Then after doing the editing of the invterview, "replace" the downconverted video of the ex3 with the full-res video from the ex3. Is this possible?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
    Thanks in advance

Multiclips not only have to be the same frame SIZE, but exact same CODEC too. HDV and XDCAM will not work together. They should both be ProRes really...because they are different GOP formats, and converting one to the other is UGLY.
Or downcovert both to DV, multiclip, edit. Then flatten the multiclip...media manage and recapture. But that will take some testing to see if it will work right.

  • Help with multiclip editing in FCP

Can someone please help me with multiclip editing. I have followed all the steps in the tutorials I have watched but I am unalble to switch between the two angles in the time line. Also the red line in the time line is telling me to render everything first . Is that normal or is it because I am using the 5.0 version of FCP?

To switch between angles, the timeline should not be rendered. Once you render it, it may play more smoothly, but you can't switch.
Also, sometimes you may have trouble switching many HD files, so it might work better to use Media Manager to make lower resolution proxies for your editing, then bringing the full-res files back for your final output. If the computer can't handle the load, it may refuse to do multiclip editing.
Finally, you may need to switch Playhead Sync back to "Open" from time to time. For some reason, the Viewer sometimes switches to "Sync Off".
By the way, your question actually belongs on the Final Cut Studio forum:

  • Multiclip editing does not update Canvas window with active angle

    Hi,
I am trying to do some multiclip editing but for some reason when cutting between angles the canvas viewer does not update with the video. Once I stop playback the cuts are all created properly and the video changes when playing back again. However, when editing the video does not change to the active angle. The audio changes but the video does not.
I have the multiclip playback setting in RT enabled and the canvas and viewer windows synced and matching each other when playing back, and video + audio is set in the sync menu.
I'm now stuck! and would greatly appreciate some help.
    Thanks
    Phil

    Welcome to the family.
I don't mean to brush you off because I understand your frustration. But what we know about mutliclip is that it really does work, if you follow the rules completely. We also know that most of the "multiclip doesn't work" posts are resolved by encouraging the user to be objective and to simply recheck the setup steps in the manual, one at a time. (Editorially speaking: There are too many of them, there are too many stupid gotchas in the multiclip setup. True. Hope springs eternal that FCP6 may fix many of these things. It should be a one-click solution.)
You can search for multiclip here and, after filtering out the nonsense from elitists like me, you should be able to detect something in your configuration that might be keeping you from getting the performance you are expecting.

  • Timecode video sync with spanned clip problem for multicam edit

I wasn't being able to sync 3 camera angles from a recent shoot with 3 EX3's all synced using the clock on one camera as master and free run on the other two cameras as slaves. External link came up on the displays and the videos show in premiere to all have the correct embedded timecode.
Yet, the synchronize menu via timecode doesn't work.
I found that it must be a problem with spanned clips but I can't figure out how to get around this problem. I'm able to synchronize these clips in final cut pro 6.0.6 but not in premiere cs 5.5 or cs 4.2.
Anybody ever have this problem or any suggestions?

    Hi Jonathan,
It's not always so easy to do NTSC <-> PAL conversions, and it's impossible to do them in Premiere while maintaining any degree of quality.
You can do a good job of this with AviSynth (freeware) but the learning curve may be a bit steep for a newbie. I also hear that ProCoder ($500+) does a good job of this but I've never tried it.
As for the sync, you can chop up your PAL clip within the muticam sequence (leaving some "holes") and match up particular points manually. You'll obviously have to edit around the holes.

  • Swap edit with more than one video clip

    Hi
I just discovered Swap Edit: drag a clip (could be on multiple tracks) to a different in point, hold down Option (to see the curved arrow) and drop to move the clip to the new in point and ripple the sequence accordingly. Great.
But - it doesn't seem to work if I highlight two sequential video clips and try to move them. Option key only switches between overwrite and insert arrows. Anyone know if it's possible?
    thanks!
    Matt

+But - it doesn't seem to work if I highlight two sequential video clips and try to move them.+
As far as I know it works if you drag and drop a single clip each time.

  • Multiclip edit won't play in 9 up viewer

So I have 9 cameras that shot a music video. I create the multiclip, drop it in the timeline and set the viewer to 9 up view. It plays for about 15 seconds, then drops frames and stops. I've tried the basic stuff, turning off unlimited RT (to safe RT), making sure no other projects or sequences are open. Video is on a 500G internal SATA with about 240G free (not my boot drive). Set layout to "Standard View" on one monitor to make sure no windows were overlapping. It's about a 9 minute segment. I have a G5 Quad with 4.5G of RAM. Am I just pushing the limits of the machine or do I need to keep looking?
I have noticed that if I switch to the 4 up view, it plays perfectly. If I create an 8 clip multiclip, it plays perfectly in the 9 up view. It doesn't matter which clip I drop out to create the 8 clip version. I even opened up a couple other sequences, ran photoshop and a few other programs in the background, and the 8 clip sequence ran fine. I did import audio with 8 of the clips, one does not have it. I only need one version of that if anyone thinks reimporting most of the clips without audio will help. Video is DV-NTSC, sequence settings match. I realize I can edit an 8 clip version them add camera 9 as layer 2 after everything else is done and just cut out most of that video, but I hate it when things don't work the way they would in my perfect world.
    Thanks

Take a look at Cal Digit's eSATA arrays... not too expensive, and first class indeed... Your Quad has extra bays in it too I think right? That's the least expesive way to create the raid... just add another drive which is the same capacity as the one you're using now, then use disk utility to create the RAID 0 with it and your current drive. I'd even match the model number of the drive ... it's snap to do.

  • Multiclip editing not cutting, Markers dissappear when stop playing

Im doing a multiclip edit for the first time and im having issues!
I have the 3 angles i need set up and sync in a multiclip and can get it playing fine ie viewer has the 3 angles playing at once and select angle is showing in the canvas. I play the clip and begin to add cut points (by clicking on angle when i want to change to it) a marker appears in the timeline as it should but when i stop playing all the markers disappear and im back to square-one again!!!!
As far as i can tell the setting are correct, i have the viewer set to open and multiclip playback enabled and all looks great it just wont insert the cut points!!!
    PLEASE HELP!

I'm no longer using 5.x, but I remember some odd bug with multiclips doing only a Switch to (instead of a Cut to) which results in the behavior you're mentioning: the markers disappearing as soon as you stop playback. I believe the issue was either related to being in a customized, but unsaved custom keyboard layout.
I guess what I'm saying is: does going to Tools > Keyboard Layout and selecting either layout (Default or Multiclip) affect the issue?

  • Multiclip editing

    Hi there,
I'm reading the manual and thought I'd try multiclip editing..seeing as I have two camera's...not too hard I guess..but it's worth investigating.
So..I've got the two camera's lined up on the timeline with the in-points clearly marked and inline with each other...but when I go to "modify" - "Make multiclip", it's greyed out and I can't highlight.
This is probably reaaaaaaally simple....but I can't see how to do initially create the multiclip..arrrrgh.
    Hope you can help.
    Carol Ann

    This is probably reaaaaaaally simple
Hiya Carol Ann, if that's your REAL name,
Multiclip is not easy at all. It's a lot of fun but try not to get too worked up when something doesn't work for you. Apple's implementation is much weirder than other NLEs and the interface blows. Suggest you practice on a few short clips, about two minutes, so you can learn how the blue and green borders work and which to use: cut or switch? Trying to get things to work in the timeline, in the viewer and on your external monitor is a challenge the first few times.
Suggest you load the multiclip keyboard or the multiclip button bar.

  • Troubles multiclip editing in FCP 7

I am running FCP 7 on a quad mac pro...with stripped raid internal hard drives ...when I go to "multiclip" ntsc 720 x 480 footage 3 streams...I get a "drop frame warning" and when I uncheck the box do not warn again...it allows multiclip editing to work but with NO AUDIO PLAYBACK.
I have been doing this type of multiclip editing for years in FCP 6 on my older power Mac with no problems. So I tried the same footage on my power mac fcp 6 and it works.
How do I get FCP 7 to stop shutting of the audio during multiclip editing?

Make sure that you are playing the sequence, not the viewer. If your audio is not linked to the video clips anymore and you play the viewer, you will not hear the audio.
